Security at the southern border with Mexico has been an increasingly prominent GOP talking point‚ with Republicans claiming that surges in migrant crossings in the last several years have amounted to a “crisis” or an “invasion‚” as opposed to their Democratic colleagues‚ who have pushed for streamlined processes for asylum-seeking migrants. These GOP lawmakers have consistently been critical of President Joe Biden’s handling of the issue and have attempted to make stricter laws a major requirement for new government funding deals. On Saturday‚ supposed details of a developing Senate border security deal were leaked by the Immigration Accountability Project‚ a political advocacy group dedicated to stricter border security policies‚ of the sort typically favored by conservatives. Republicans in exchange would get to have more power when it comes to deportation‚ but not any crackdown on Homeland Security’s power to “parole” illegal immigrants directly into the country.
