China's BYD Reveals Electric Supercar Capable Of 218 Miles Per Hour

Chinese carmaker BYD has unveiled its first all-electric supercar model‚ capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 kilometers (62 miles) per hour in just 2.36 seconds. With a top speed of 309.19 kilometers (218 miles) per hour‚ the vehicle can rack up speeds faster than some models of Ferrari and Lamborghini – but it runs on electricity‚ no gas required. Known as the U9 model‚ the car is being released under BYD’s high-end sub-brand called YANGWANG. All being well‚ deliveries are expecting start in summer 2024 with a price tag of 1.68 million yuan (around $233‚400).The YANGWANG U9 packs 1‚300 horsepower and a maximum torque of 1‚680 Newton–meters. Like many supercars of this ilk‚ the vehicle features a cabin made from carbon fiber‚ a strong but super-light material  With this immense power‚ overheating can be an issue for an electric motor. To overcome this‚ BYD says the U9 has “fine-tuned its thermal management system to better resist high temperatures”. The country accounted for 35 percent of global electric vehicle exports in 2022 and their fortunes continued to rise throughout 2023. Founded in 1995 as a rechargeable battery maker‚ BYD has risen to become one of the major players in this scene. In Q4 2023‚ they managed to sell more electric vehicles than Tesla‚ which was previously considered to be the largest electric vehicle manufacturer in the world.While much of their sales are in China‚ BYD and other Chinese manufacturers are looking to expand globally‚ despite foreign trade restrictions. The US is thinking about raising tariffs on some Chinese goods‚ including EVs‚ while the European Union (EU) recently launched a probe into Chinese-made electric vehicles to see whether they benefited from “illegal subsidization”. It could be that carmakers in "the West" are starting to feel the pressure. Chinese carmakers are denying the allegations from the EU and claim their success is down to their unique technology and style of management‚ not illegal government handouts. “Our success is not because of the subsidy‚ it’s because we have unique technology… and our management efficiency is high‚” Michael Shu‚ European president of BYD‚ told the Financial Times this week.“It’s because we invested in this technology much earlier‚ and much more‚ than competitors. It’s not because of the subsidy‚” Shu added.

Astronomers have discovered a supermassive black hole of exceptional proportions in the early universe. Its light comes to us from when the cosmos was just over 764 million years old. And yet this black hole is a big one‚ estimated to weigh 40 million times the mass of our Sun.The team was able to see this object thanks to gravitational lensing. The gravity of a foreground object warped space-time to such a degree that it magnified this compact red object. Using JWST‚ the team was able to study the spectrum of its light. The supermassive black hole is shrouded in dust and accreting material with intensity. This material is spinning around it at a very high speed.  "Using the spectra‚ we managed to not only confirm that the red compact object was a supermassive black hole and measure its exact redshift‚ but also obtain a solid estimate for its mass from the width of its emission lines‚" co-lead author Dr Lukas Furtak‚ from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev‚ said in a statement."Gas is orbiting in the gravitational field of the black hole and achieves very high velocities that are not seen in other parts of galaxies. Because of the Doppler shift‚ light emitted by the accreting material is red-shifted on one side and blue-shifted on the other side‚ according to its velocity. This causes emission lines in the spectrum to become broader."The object is a quasar‚ the active state of a supermassive black hole. It’s outshining its host galaxy but also it appears to be heavier than it should – something that astronomers have found in several very distant galaxies. A typical supermassive black hole should be about 0.1 percent of the star mass of the galaxy but these overmassive black holes are at least 10 times bigger than that."All the light of that galaxy must fit within a tiny region the size of a present-day star cluster. The gravitational lensing magnification of the source gave us exquisite limits on the size. Even packing all the possible stars into such a small region‚ the black hole ends up being at least 1 percent of the total mass of the system‚" added the co-lead Professor Jenny Greene from Princeton University."In fact‚ several other supermassive black holes in the early universe have now been found to show a similar behavior‚ which lead to some intriguing views of black hole and host galaxy growth‚ and the interplay between them‚ which is not well understood."Black hole growth and galaxy growth have a well-defined relationship in the more recent universe but in the first few hundred million years after the Big Bang‚ things are very different. And JWST is helping by finding these overmassive objects.A paper describing the results is published in Nature.

A new study has found that certain types of clouds disappear during solar eclipses‚ and offered an explanation. The finding could have implications for attempts to engineer the climate.During solar eclipses‚ people have noticed that common cumulus clouds over land tend to dissipate almost instantly."From Earth‚ you can count the clouds and watch them disappear‚ but that only provides anecdotal evidence‚" lead author on the new paper‚ Victor Trees‚ explained in a press release. "Even without a solar eclipse‚ clouds are constantly changing."However‚ measuring this effect scientifically has not been easy. Cloud measurements by satellites during previous solar eclipses did not take into account the partial lunar shadow making clouds less reflective‚ resulting in large dark patches on cloud maps. In the new study‚ a team including scientists from Delft University of Technology and the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute used a new method to analyze data from previous eclipses which incorporated accurate calculations of how much of the Sun was obscured by the Moon across the Earth. "By far most of the solar eclipse consists of a partial eclipse‚ where there is still plenty of light outside‚" Trees added. "In this partial eclipse satellites receive enough reflected sunlight‚ after correcting for the obscuration‚ to reliably measure clouds.”The team applied this new method to three previous eclipses‚ and found that cumulus clouds begin to vanish when only a small part of the Sun is eclipsed by the Moon."Our corrected data reveal that‚ over cooling land surfaces‚ shallow cumulus clouds start to disappear at very small solar obscurations (~15%)‚" the team explains in their paper. "Our simulations explain that the cloud response was delayed and was initiated at even smaller solar obscurations."Over the ocean‚ cumulus clouds do not disappear during partial solar eclipses as the surface is not cooled as much as the land."The disappearing clouds during a solar eclipse can be explained by the drop in sensible (thermal) and latent (moisture) heat fluxes from the surface to the lowest atmosphere layer‚ as a result of the dropping [land surface temperature]‚" the team adds in the paper.As well as confirming the weird disappearance of cumulus (but not other) clouds during eclipses‚ the team believes their findings could have implications for any future attempts to engineer the climate. "This could be a warning for climate engineering. If we eclipse the sun in the future with technological solutions‚ it may affect the clouds‚" Trees added. "Fewer clouds could partly oppose the intended effect of climate engineering‚ because clouds reflect sunlight and thus actually help to cool down the Earth."The study is published in Nature Communications Earth &; Environment.
