Democratic Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania has said that he is "not a progressive‚" according to NBC News."I just think I'm a Democrat that is very committed to choice and other things. But with Israel‚ I'm going to be on the right side of that. And immigration is something near and dear to me‚ and I think we do have to effectively address it as well‚" he said‚ according to the outlet.Fetterman has expressed support for Israel's right to eliminate Hamas. Texas police say that a drunken teenager tried to bribe fast food workers to let him flee the scene after he allegedly ran over a homeless woman with his Mercedes and killed her. The horrifying story unfolded on Friday at about 11:25 p.m. when 17-year-old Hunter Cameron Villasana allegedly hit the woman sleeping under the Katy Freeway in Houston with his black Mercedes GLK350. Police say he was driving at an unsafe speed when he lost control of the vehicle‚ hit a curb‚ ran over the woman and crashed into a wall. Workers from a nearby Jack-in-the-Box fast food restaurant kept the teenager at the scene until police could arrive. The woman died at the scene. Prosecutors said in court that Villasana tried to bribe the workers to let him go by promising that he would send them money via the Venmo app. They also claim that he lied to investigators and told them the woman was walking in the street when he struck her. Villasana was charged with intoxication manslaughter‚ a second-degree felony. He was released to his parents' custody on a $200‚000 bond but was ordered to wear an ankle monitor that detects whether the person is drinking alcohol. He's also not allowed to drive. "Drunk driving or intoxicated driving is a plague in Harris County‚" said prosecutor Matthew Bergeron. "Harris County‚ please do not drive under the influence‚ do not drive intoxicated‚ call a friend‚ call an Uber‚ anything to avoid this situation." Police said they have not yet been able to identify the victim‚ who is a white woman in her 50s. They are asking for help from the public to determine her identity. A man who was in prison for continued sex abuse of a child was able to escape through the help of his mother‚ who is a former corrections officer‚ according to Texas police. 39-year-old Robert Yancy Jr. was convicted in 2022 and given a life sentence without parole‚ but he escaped prison on Sunday before police were able to recapture him on Monday morning at about 8 a.m. His mother‚ Leonor Priestle‚ was arrested Sunday and charged with facilitating his escape‚ according to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. The TDCJ said that Priestle went to visit Yancy at the Clemens Unit of the Brazoria County prison while wearing a black sweater. Yancy reportedly put on the sweater and walked out of the unit with her and then got into a white 2021 Nissan Versa to drive away. Just after 6 p.m. on Sunday‚ police got an alert from their statewide license plate reader system and were able to locate Priestle in the vehicle. They also arrested her boyfriend‚ Russell Williams‚ for allegedly helping Yancy escape‚ but the inmate was not in the car. When police apprehended Yancy the next morning thanks to a tip from two witnesses‚ investigators said he possessed identification that they believe he used to walk out of the prison. Mary Ann Galindo‚ a neighbor to Priestle‚ told KHOU-TV she was distraught by the news but believed the woman was just doing what she thought was right for her son. "It's still hard for me‚ it is‚" said Galindo. "I think it's very sad because she's a very sweet lady. She's very caring." Yancy was convicted of sexually abusing a child over a period of 3 years from the time the child was 7 years old. That victim testified against him at trial. Yancy will now face felony escape charges‚ according to Texas officials.
