“The Golden Bachelor” is yet another reality dating show‚ but unlike “The Bachelor” and “The Bachelorette‚” both of which feature younger competitors‚ “The Golden Bachelor” stars 72-year-old Gerry (pronounced Gary) Turner as he searches for love again. The show‚ which ended yesterday‚ has been wildly popular‚ partly because Gerry Turner‚ or perhaps Gerry Turner’s persona‚ has been well-received by the public. But how authentic is this silver fox? “They made him look so sympathetic – the sweetest‚” says Allie Beth Stuckey’s producer Bri Shrader‚ who watched the show from start to finish. However‚ according to recent reports‚ the real Gerry doesn’t exactly match up with his onstage presence. The show portrayed Gerry in a sympathetic light‚ claiming he “[hadn’t] dated in 45 years because his wife died.” They called him a “retired restaurateur” and “[made] him seem like he was wealthy‚” says Allie. But it’s looking like Gerry’s traits were more rooted in dramatic effect than they were in reality. Disney just can’t seem to stop fanning the flames. CEO Bob Iger took the stage at a session of the New York Times’ DealBook Summit on Wednesday and explained Disney’s decision to end its ad buys on X‚ formerly Twitter. In response to an allegedly anti-Semitic post by X owner Elon Musk‚ Iger undercut his own stated goal of quieting “the noise” of the culture wars now associated with America’s once-favorite family brand. As of Thursday‚ Disney faced a fresh wave of conservatives calling for boycotts‚ urging one another to unsubscribe from Disney+. Without a doubt‚ Disney is a company that has lost its way. But there is something broken in the logic of conservative aims in this latest display of rage. Conservatives have no doubt been successful in making their anger with Disney clear. It’s hard to place exactly when the rift fully opened up‚ but it’s been downhill since former Disney CEO Bob Chapek positioned the company against Florida Governor Ron DeSantis over the “Parental Rights In Education” bill that aimed to protect K-3 students from sexualized curricula and gender theory. Since then‚ Disney has stumbled from one public relations catastrophe to another‚ peaking with leaked video footage that same spring of an executive promising to insert more LGBTQ content into films and television. Since then‚ Disney has revealed in company filings with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission that it’s increasingly worried about “misalignment with public and consumer tastes and preferences for entertainment‚ travel‚ and consumer products” and anticipates a decline in subscriptions and sales. And Disney faces new competition from the Daily Wire’s upstart Bentkey Studios‚ a well-funded children’s entertainment alternative for parents exhausted with having to preview all of their kids’ shows in advance. But what do conservatives want to achieve here with boycotts aimed at punishing Disney for leaving Musk’s X? If Disney is indeed a shadowy pedophilic corporation promoting the sexualization of children‚ wouldn’t the correct response be that of Elon Musk when he bid Disney’s Bob Iger farewell with a gentle “go f*** yourself”? It’s vital for the right to grow beyond tantrums and posts of unsubscribe screenshots as both the means and the end of their activism. The goal should be a better Walt Disney Company. It should be screenshots of confirmed subscriptions to alternative platforms being offered by the likes of Bentkey and Angel Studios‚ which backs “The Tuttle Twins” series. It makes little sense to both loathe Disney and demand that the company subsidize X with its advertising‚ which conservatives would presumably claim promotes immoral content. You should want an X free of Disney ads‚ if that’s what you sincerely believe. Instead‚ we get conservative influencers clamoring for Disney to “bend the knee to us and Elon Musk.” Why? I want Disney to be better. I want Disney to return to a golden era when it represented a brand that American families‚ parents‚ and their kids could all enjoy together. Being permanent opposition weakens our hand. It doesn’t strengthen it. Let’s place our energy and resources into supporting alternative family entertainment‚ not empty displays of power politics on social media.

A 19-year-old woman claiming to be the girlfriend of the gunman who murdered 19 children and two teachers at an elementary school in Texas last year has been charged for allegedly making interstate threats‚ which is a federal crime. Victoria Gabriela Rodríguez-Morales‚ whose supposed boyfriend was ultimately put down by police‚ was arrested Wednesday in Puerto Rico after a grand jury issued a 13-count indictment. "The U.S. Attorney's Office has no tolerance for illegal threats‚ especially threats that target people who are the victims of the horrific mass shooting in Uvalde‚ Texas‚" U.S. Attorney Stephen Muldrow of the District of Puerto Rico said in a statement. "We hope that this arrest brings a sense of peace to those who were targeted by the defendant." According to an FBI affidavit obtained by Law &; Crime‚ the FBI and the U.S. Secret Service have been investigating a series of violent interstate threats "directed at public institutions‚ public officials‚ and private citizens in Uvalde‚ Texas‚ and other Texas areas‚ from operator(s) in Puerto Rico" for several months. Rodríguez-Morales was identified as the prime suspect. She had already been under investigation for similar threats targeted at the victims' families since at least 2018 — four years prior to the May 24‚ 2022‚ mass shooting at Robb Elementary School. The suspect previously resided with her mother in Uvalde‚ where she had run-ins with the law and "sent email threats to kill public officials‚ shoot schools‚ and kill teachers and students."'KSAT-TV noted that court documents suggest the suspect was found to have above-average intelligence and a lack of remorse or guilt. She was also reportedly diagnosed with "opposition Defiant Disorder and Intermittent Explosive Disorder." After a brief stint in a juvenile detention center‚ she relocated with her family to Puerto Rico around May 2020. From 2020 up until this year‚ Rodríguez-Morales threatened the Uvalde Police‚ Uvalde High School‚ Morales Junior High School‚ the Texas Public Safety Department‚ the Uvalde Fire Department‚ and other institutions‚ by email‚ over social media‚ and using relatives' phones‚ according to the FBI affidavit. The U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Puerto Rico listed some of the many threats the suspect allegedly made‚ including "They will shoot uvalde high school and morales jr high whenever I tell 'em So yeah the persecution is gonna start today"; "I will haunt everyone from class 2022 to 2023 Each and every single one of y'all will die"; "Each and every single one of y'all will die in the name of [the school shooter]"; "Your childrens hospital may blow in pieces If yall dont do as i say"; and "We will shoot Uvalde Texas high school and Texas A&;M college." The FBI affidavit details various other ghoulish remarks‚ including‚ "Lovely they died I'm glad some of their blood runs in my hands Me and [the school shooter] wanted to do this together but he did not wait for me to come‚" and "more kids will die and teens so don't cry about this one cause there's worse coming." According to officials‚ at least one of Rodríguez-Morales' alleged threats resulted in the temporary closure of a school in Texas. The suspect also allegedly threatened Kimberly Mata-Rubio‚ the 34-year-old mother of Lexi‚ a 10-year-old girl slain in the Robb Elementary School shooting. "If Mata Rubio wins the elections I will kill her‚" Rodríguez-Morales is quoted as writing. Mata-Rubio ran for mayor of Uvalde‚ losing in last month's election to former Mayor Cody Smith. In a number of the threats issued after her alleged boyfriend was riddled with bullets‚ the suspect alluded to other people being willing to "start the plan we have." It's presently unclear whether she had been in contact and scheming with the mass shooter's cousin‚ Nathan Cruz‚ who was arrested by the San Antonio Police Department on Aug. 8. The SAPD indicated authorities had been informed by a family member that Cruz was making threats and "upon further investigation‚ detectives were able to gather enough evidence to produce an arrest warrant for Terrorist Threat." CNN reported that Cruz's mother allegedly overheard a phone conversation where he was attempting to illegally get his hands on a rifle similar to that used by his cousin in the 2022 mass shooting. The FBI affidavit indicates that besides other evidence linking the suspect to the threats‚ she also uploaded photos and videos of herself to accounts associated with the messages. The suspect faces five years for each of the 13 counts with which she has been charged. As of Thursday‚ she remained in custody at the Puerto Rico Metropolitan Detention Center. "The subject in this case was hundreds of miles away from the place she intended to torment through threats of violence. Yet she was still identified‚ located and arrested‚" said Joseph González‚ special agent in charge of the FBI San Juan Field Office. "May this serve as public notice that this behavior will not be tolerated‚ in Puerto Rico or anywhere else in the nation." Elon Musk’s recent interview with CNBC’s Andrew Ross Sorkin at the New York TImes DealBook Summit has sparked no shortage of controversy‚ specifically the moment when the Tesla CEO told advertisers to “go f*** yourself.” But several mainstream media outlets‚ including CNN‚ have twisted Musk’s words to mean something he never intended. “CNN is saying he said to advertisers that didn't want to advertise on X to F off‚” says Glenn Beck‚ but “that's not what he said.” When Sorkin brought up advertisers threatening to drop their partnerships with X‚ Musk was quick to share his feelings. “Don’t advertise‚” he said bluntly. “You don’t want them to advertise?” Sorkin asked‚ confused. “No‚” Musk confidently retorted. “If somebody is going to try to blackmail me with advertising‚ blackmail me with money‚ go f*** yourself.” “Go f*** yourself‚” he said again. “Is that clear? On the latest episode of Roseanne Barr’s podcast‚ Tucker Carlson finally admitted what many of us have long suspected: He’s voting for Donald Trump in 2024. “I became an active Trump supporter when they raided Mar-a-Lago. That can’t stand‚” Carlson told the comedian. “I agree with Trump on a lot‚ but even if I disagreed with Trump on a lot‚ I’d still be a Trump supporter … because you cannot allow the president of the United States to use the Justice Department to knock the front-runner out of the race.” For Carlson‚ the issue is “bigger than Trump‚ it’s bigger than Biden.” “It’s a question of 'Do you want to live in a free country with a functioning justice system?' I’m voting for Trump‚ and if they convict him‚ I will send the max donations‚ and I’ll lead protests‚” he said. Carlson is correct. The 2024 presidential election is a referendum on what type of country Americans want. If we can truly no longer stomach the idea of our supposed moral and intellectual “superiors” helping decide our destiny‚ then maybe it’s time we try a new form of government. Do we want an America in which anyone can become president or an America in which only those passing muster with a self-appointed panel of elites qualify for the job? Do we want an America that respects the sovereignty of its citizens or an America that “protects” them from themselves? Do we want an America that recognizes and resists true authoritarianism or an America that turns on its own people rather than disturb its self-aggrandizing‚ simplistic fantasy of “our democracy”? How I got here If any liberals happen to be reading this‚ I was once like you. I voted for Barack Obama twice. In 2016‚ I preferred Bernie Sanders over Hillary Clinton. I despised how she and the Democratic National Committee treated him‚ but I gave Clinton my vote anyway. Better her than the existential threat of Donald Trump‚ I reasoned. Trump’s surprise victory‚ I’m embarrassed to say now‚ shook me to the core. At that point‚ I had a choice: Allow my fear and anger to metastasize and gorge on the endless stream of anti-Trump hysteria‚ or try to figure out why some people greeted the prospect of a President Trump with cool indifference or even joy. I chose the latter‚ somewhat selfishly. The truth is‚ I’ve never really cared that much for politics. (I must admit now that I voted for Obama mainly because he was younger‚ cooler‚ and better with words than John McCain — and wasn’t it time we put a black guy in the White House anyway?) I figured if Trump’s supporters were even a little bit correct‚ I could safely go back to ignoring the news and focus on my nonexistent screenwriting career. I eased into it by starting with dissenters on the left. I might scoff at "Chapo Trap House" now‚ but the podcast's irreverent humor about Trump — and clear-eyed assessment of how the Democrats helped make him — was a godsend. Wacky‚ new age-y progressive firebrand Caitlin Johnstone convinced me that as bad as Trump seemed to be‚ he was just another run-of-the-mill Republican‚ whereas Clinton’s interventionist foreign policy represented the genuine existential threat. I was satisfied that Trump was no big deal. But my curiosity — and my rising resentment toward sanctimonious Trump-haters and the intelligence-insulting lies they spewed — got the better of me. I started reading and listening to all the people I had automatically dismissed as cranks and grifters. In a few cases‚ my initial assessment was correct. But even they had good points to make if I approached without ego. Many of the others had arguments I’d never even considered. My progression from cautious‚ “sophisticated” Trump minimizer to full-throated MAGA patriot was slow but definitive … and irreversible. And yet‚ even today‚ I avoid talking about it too much. It’s not so much fear of cancellation (I’ve never needed politics to alienate myself from would-be employers) as it is unwillingness to offend or disturb. I feel a little sorry for those who can’t see what I see. Times change‚ people change But now it’s time to speak up. There are many others who can make a more eloquent case for Trump than I can. Much of what Victor Davis Hanson wrote in his 2019 book‚ “The Case for Trump‚” still holds true. Hanson remains a dedicated explicator of the damage Trump’s opponents have done and continue to do to our country. Helen Andrews has been adept at exposing the cynicism and self-interest motivating much anti-Trumpism‚ as has my Align colleague Helen Roy. And let’s not forget the always delightful Peachy Keenan. The literature is rich. But if you just want the short version‚ consider all the reasons we’ve heard to vote against Trump. For the most part‚ they’re rooted in emotion and wholly subjective interpretation. The visceral revulsion Trump inspires in the average right-thinking liberal comes first; only later does this revulsion get shaped into the semblance of an argument. Trump’s brash personality and refusal to abide by the increasingly restrictive norms of “polite” speech have long been used as evidence that he is “unfit” to lead. The media’s seething humiliation over his 2016 win birthed the utterly spurious‚ never-ending Russian collusion story. And now our most powerful elites’ desperate desire that Trump should just go away has forever found expression in his various indictments. What do you want‚ citizen? The most urgent and compelling argument for or against Trump has to do with how you answer the following questions. Is it of grave national importance that Trump allegedly paid off a pornographic actress lest she damage his presidential campaign? Was that any worse than anything any number of sleazy politicians‚ including Bill Clinton‚ have done? Are the accusations that Trump carelessly handled classified documents any more severe than those leveled at Hillary Clinton or Joe Biden? Does a poorly organized‚ badly policed protest amount to an “insurrection”? If so‚ is there even a shred of evidence that Donald Trump helped plan it? Does Trump’s arguably less-than-gracious refusal to concede the 2020 election amount to trying to “overturn” it‚ especially in light of the many well-documented irregularities in collecting and counting votes? If you can’t answer these questions with a confident “yes‚” you might be a Trump supporter. At the very least‚ you trust your fellow citizens to answer these questions for themselves at the ballot box and expect the same trust to be extended to you concerning your candidate. If we can truly no longer stomach the idea of our supposed moral and intellectual “superiors” helping decide our destiny‚ then maybe it’s time we try a new form of government. Until then‚ the most prudent course for America is to vote for Trump.

Buffalo Bills linebacker Von Miller turned himself in to authorities in a suburb of Dallas‚ Texas. Miller is accused of assaulting his pregnant girlfriend. Von Miller turned himself in to the Glenn Heights Police Department at 3 p.m. on Thursday‚ according to KDFW. He was then transported to the DeSoto Police Department jail to be processed. Miller posted a $5‚000 bond and was released from custody. He reportedly had an outstanding warrant from the Dallas Police Department on accusations of domestic violence.Miller was charged with third-degree felony assault of a pregnant woman – which is punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a $10‚000 fine.Around 11 a.m. on Wednesday‚ Dallas police responded to what the department described as "a major disturbance call." WFAA obtained a recording of the 911 call the girlfriend made."My boyfriend is choking and hitting me ... I have bruises all over me‚" the woman is heard saying.Miller and his pregnant girlfriend reportedly engaged in a verbal argument that escalated into a physical assault. The argument stemmed from a disagreement about upcoming travel plans at around 10:40 a.m.‚ according to court documents. The affidavit said the woman stormed out of the main bedroom of the couple's apartment‚ then went to the home office and slammed the door‚ which made Miller “visibly angry.”Miller allegedly ordered his girlfriend to "get out." The woman then attempted to retrieve some of her belongings‚ but while she was doing so‚ Miller pushed her‚ according to the affidavit. The woman repeatedly yelled‚ “Stop‚ I’m pregnant!”The Dallas Morning News reported‚ "Miller continued to push the woman as he stepped on her feet‚ which caused her to fall back into a chair‚ the affidavit says. He then put a hand on her neck and applied pressure for 3 to 5 seconds‚ according to the affidavit‚ which police say caused pain but not difficulty breathing. As she continued to try to gather her belongings‚ Miller grabbed her phone‚ threw her laptop on the floor and stomped on it‚ the affidavit says."Court docs said the woman attempted to pick up her laptop from the floor and Miller yanked her hair‚ removing a chunk of her hair in the process. The alleged victim took out her cell phone and reportedly began recording the situation.Miller grabbed his girlfriend and pushed her onto the couch‚ the affidavit read. He then reportedly wrapped both hands around her neck and applied pressure.The woman allegedly said she was calling the police‚ which prompted Miller to leave the apartment before officers arrived. When police arrived at the apartment‚ they said the pregnant woman had “minor abrasions” on her left hand as well as bruising on her abdomen‚ left bicep‚ and neck that was "consistent with applied pressure."The woman showed police a cell phone video in which Miller could be heard screaming at her and demanding that she leave the apartment‚ according to the affidavit. She also provided police with a photo of a positive pregnancy test and text messages with Miller discussing the possible due date of the child.The victim was treated for minor injuries and transported to a local hospital‚ according to police. WFAA contacted the alleged victim‚ but she denied that the assault happened "We’re fine‚" she told the outlet. "Things were blown way out of context. This is actually outrageous!"She described the altercation as "a huge misunderstanding" and "a verbal disagreement.""No one assaulted anyone‚" she added. "This is insane. And sad."The woman and Miller have been in a relationship for seven years and have two children together‚ ESPN reported. The victim told police that she is six weeks pregnant. The Buffalo Bills said in a statement on Thursday‚ "This morning‚ we were made aware of an incident involving Von Miller. We are in the process of gathering more information and will have no further comment at this point."The NFL said‚ "We are aware of the matter and have been in contact with the club. We have no further comment at this time."The Bills have a bye and will not play a game this week.Miller has appeared in eight of the Bills' 12 games this NFL season. He previously played for the Los Angeles Rams in 2021 and the Denver Broncos from 2011 to 2021.Miller notched three first-team All-Pro selections while in Denver.
