Thousands of Ukrainian women and children have fled to Sweden in recent weeks. Now Samnytt is the first media outlet to report that some of those who fled to Örebro want to return to the war in Ukraine. The reason is that, after an incident during the week when foreign men entered their homes, they do not feel safe.
- When there are bombs, I know at least that I can go down to the basement and hide there, says one of the women.
Busloads of Ukrainian refugee women with children have arrived in Örebro in recent weeks. Several of them have been offered a bed at Örebro City Vandrarhem.
But the Ukrainians do not feel safe in the hostel. The background is some incidents until Monday night when a number of unknown men, on several occasions, tried to get into the women.
Volunteer tells
Samnytt has spoken to one of the Ukrainian women at the hostel. We also talked to a female volunteer in Örebro who works with the women. None of them want us to print their names.
By talking to the two women, Samnytt has managed to create a picture of what happened on Monday night.
First Somalis
The first incident occurred at three o'clock at night. Then two Somali men started knocking on the front door of the hostel. Without opening the door, the Ukrainian woman tried to talk to the men outside.
- They looked like African Americans, if I express myself politely. They were black people. Long and narrow with black skin color, she tells Samnytt.

She explained to the men that only Ukrainian women and children live in the hostel, but they claimed that they have a friend who lives there. After asking what her friend's name was, she was able to establish that no such person lives in the hostel.
But the men did not give up. After a while, a third Somali man appeared outside the hostel. The women found the situation uncomfortable and went into their rooms and locked themselves in.
Slammed on the door
In a vague way, one or more of the Somali men then managed to enter the hostel.
- They started knocking on the door of a woman who lives with her two small children aged two and four. They were very scared. The four-year-old was silent, but the two-year-old screamed, the volunteer says.
- They tried to get to her. The men spoke in a foreign language. She who lives in the room does not speak English, but recognizes English and understood that the men spoke another language.
Then came the Arabs
At five o'clock in the morning, a group of Arab men came instead and tried to enter the hostel.
- On the other hand, they did not manage to enter the hostel, the volunteer says.
- I've talked to the women. They are scared. In Germany, a Ukrainian refugee woman was gang-raped.
Confirmed by the hostel
That a group of men tried to enter the hostel is confirmed by an employee that Samnytt spoke to. From the hostel's side, however, they try to tone down what happened.
- Someone knocked on the door and wanted to find somewhere to stay overnight. They tried to find housing, says the employee.
In the middle of the night?
- I have not talked to those who knocked on the door.
The hostel has now deployed security guards to keep track. The Ukrainian refugees have also been informed that they can either contact the hostel's staff or call the police on telephone number 112 if they feel unsafe.
No police report
Ola Olsson is on duty at the police in Örebro. He tells Samnytt that he does not know anything about the incident at the hostel on Monday night.
According to the volunteer that Samnytt spoke to, there is an explanation for this. The Ukrainian women did not dare to call the police because they were afraid of getting into trouble.
- The interpreter told them that they are not allowed to call the police, because they are not registered with the Swedish Migration Board yet, the volunteer says.
Want to go home
According to the volunteer, several of the women are so shaken by the events of the night until Monday that they regret that they fled to Sweden. Some even wish they had stayed in war-torn Ukraine.
- I'm so scared I want to go home, says one of them.
- When it comes to bombs, I know at least that I can go down to the basement and hide there.
