Recording artist Shakira had some critical thoughts about the Greta Gerwig-directed summer blockbuster‚ “Barbie.” The 47-year-old star recently discussed the movie touted as having girl-power messaging‚ saying she doesn’t believe women should become powerful by taking power away from men. “My sons absolutely hated it‚” the “Hips Don’t Lie” singer said during a newly published interview with Allure. “They felt that it was emasculating. And I agree‚ to a certain extent. I’m raising two boys. I want ’em to feel powerful too [while] respecting women.” “I like pop culture when it attempts to empower women without robbing men of their possibility to be men‚ to also protect and provide‚” Shakira continued. “I believe in giving women all the tools and the trust that we can do it all without losing our essence‚ without losing our femininity. I think that men have a purpose in society and women have another purpose as well. We complement each other‚ and that complement should not be lost.” She added‚ “Why not share the load with people who deserve to carry it‚ who have a duty to carry it as well?” Shakira made headlines last year after her very public split from her longtime boyfriend‚ former professional soccer player Gerard Piqué. The couple was together for 11 years and had two children together‚ but they were never married. They broke up amid allegations of Piqué cheating on Shakira. The “Barbie” movie was a smash hit but received mixed reviews from many critics‚ especially for sending messaging that feels outdated. Women who are critical of gender ideology are slamming Scotland’s new hate speech law‚ saying it restricts them from voicing their views on biological sex. The new law‚ the Hate Crime and Public Order (Scotland) Act 2021‚ went into effect on Monday. The measure criminalizes “stirring up hatred” relating to age‚ disability‚ religion‚ sexual orientation‚ transgender identity‚ or being intersex. The maximum penalty for violations is seven years in jail. Critics quickly spoke out against the law‚ saying it risks jailing people for voicing their sincerely held opinions‚ particularly those critical of gender ideology. Under the law‚ a person may not communicate material or behave in a way that “a reasonable person would consider to be threatening or abusive” with the intention of stirring up hatred based on the newly protected characteristics. Racially-based hatred was already outlawed in Scotland‚ but the new law adds more protected categories. Many voiced their opposition to the law on social media‚ posting under the hashtags #FactIsNotHate and #WomenWontWheesht — “wheesht” meaning “hush” in Scotland. Convicted murderer Alex Murdaugh was sentenced by a federal judge on Monday to 40 years in prison for numerous financial crimes. The 40-year sentence will be served at the same time as the 27 years South Carolina sentenced him to for similar crimes‚ NBC News reported. Those sentences are in addition to the two consecutive life sentences Murdaugh received for killing his wife‚ Maggie‚ and youngest son‚ Paul. Murdaugh was accused of stealing millions of dollars from his previous law firm and its clients and‚ in addition to prison time‚ was ordered to pay more than $8 million in restitution to his victims. “Trust in our legal system begins with trust in its lawyers‚” U.S. Attorney Adair F. Boroughs said in a statement. “South Carolinians turn to lawyers when they are at their most vulnerable‚ and in our state‚ those who abuse the public’s trust and enrich themselves by fraud‚ theft‚ and self-dealing will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.” The sentencing hearing almost didn’t happen‚ as prosecutors last week filed a motion trying to back out of their plea agreement with Murdaugh‚ claiming he failed a polygraph test and was‚ therefore‚ lying about where the money was spent. The federal government based its attempt to revoke the plea agreement on the failed polygraph test but asked the courts not to release the results. Murdaugh’s attorneys filed a motion last week opposing the federal prosecutors’ request. “To allow the Government to publicly accuse Murdaugh of breaching his plea agreement while also allowing the Government to hide all purported evidence supporting that accusation from the public would violate the public’s right to the truth‚” Murdaugh’s attorneys‚ Jim Griffin and Dick Harpootlian‚ wrote in their motion‚ according to CNN. Polygraph tests are not permitted as evidence in court because they are notoriously unreliable. The attorneys argued in court documents that the polygraph Murdaugh failed was not reliable because the administrator admitted to Murdaugh that he had just tested Joran van der Sloot‚ who admitted to killing Natalee Holloway in Aruba in 2005. “There are legitimate questions as to whether the Government intentionally manipulated the results to void the plea agreement and achieve the prosecutors’ stated desire to ‘ensure that he’s never a free man again‚’” the attorneys wrote‚ according to the Associated Press. Murdaugh admitted to stealing around $12 million from clients over the years after promising to help them with medical bills or pain and suffering. One victim‚ Jordan Jinks‚ had been a friend of Murdaugh’s since they were children. He asked Murdaugh to represent him after he incurred hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical bills for a neck injury resulting from someone rear-ending his car. Jinks paid the bills‚ assured that Murdaugh would obtain a settlement to refund him. When Murdaugh received that settlement‚ he kept the money for himself. A political action committee backing former President Donald Trump’s 2024 election campaign has rolled out a new website highlighting the dramatic increase in grocery prices since President Joe Biden took office.  The website‚ which was created by Make America Great Again Inc‚ is called “Biden-Mart.” It allows visitors to compare the prices of fruits‚ vegetables‚ and meats at the end of Trump’s presidency to current prices under Biden. The website cites data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture from January 2021 and January 2024.  “Every time you go grocery shopping you are reminded of the failure of ‘Bidenomics‚’” Alex Pfeiffer‚ spokesman for MAGA INC‚ told The Daily Mail‚ which first reported on the website. “Joe Biden’s inflation is robbing hard-working Americans of their money.” The interactive site allows people to compile their weekly grocery lists to “see how much more expensive your bill has become under Joe Biden.” Foods listed on the website include chicken‚ eggs‚ ground beef‚ potatoes‚ carrots‚ onions‚ oranges‚ milk‚ grapes‚ sweet corn‚ cheese‚ yogurt‚ butter‚ eggs‚ coffee‚ and other meats and vegetables.  According to the website‚ some of the products with the most significant jumps under Biden include apples (111% increase per 2 pounds)‚ boneless chicken thighs (91% increase per 2 pounds)‚ ribeye steak (82% increase per pound)‚ and ground beef (66% increase per 2 pounds).  Screenshot: ‘Biden-Mart’ website.
