The evidence that there were lakes in the Sahara desert

FOREIGN. Analysis of fossil algae provides evidence that there were lakes in the Sahara during Africa's "green period" 5,000 to 10,000 years ago.

The Sahara desert has not always been a desert. Instead, earlier in history it consisted of both lakes and plants.

In a recent article published in the Journal of Paleolimnology , the researchers show that there is evidence for the existence of ancient lakes dated to between about 10,000 and 5,000 years ago in the northern Sahara of Algeria.

The method is based on the analysis of fossil algae found in the sand and deposited in water environments millions of years ago when the area was covered by lakes.

The so-called Green Sahara, or Africa's wet period, was a wet period in northern Africa that occurred during the Earth's last warm period (the Holocene) that started about 11,000 years ago, due to changes in the Earth's orbital parameters.
