WATCH: L.A. Police Detain Reporter Live On-Air During Anti-ICE Riots

Los Angeles police detained a CNN reporter and his crew on live television Tuesday night as anti-ICE riots continued to roil the city following federal immigration enforcement raids. CNN correspondent Jason Carroll was captured on live television with his hands behind his back, surrounded by officers in riot gear during Laura Coates’ 11 p.m. broadcast. “I’m being detained, Laura,” Carroll can be heard saying after police briefly restrained him and his crew, according to a report from the New York Post. Officers ultimately allowed Carroll to leave, but warned him not to return to the area. “We’re letting you go, but you can’t come back … if you come back in, then you go,” an officer told the reporter. A CNN spokesperson confirmed to the New York Post that the news team was “briefly detained” while documenting events as police cleared the area, adding they were “pleased the situation resolved quickly once the reporting team presented law enforcement with their CNN credentials.” The CNN correspondent had just finished his report from the scene of the riot on CNN’s “Laura Coates Live,” when the host noticed the confrontation and went back to the L.A. crew. Am I seeing Jason Carroll being – what happened? Jason?” “I am being detained,” Carroll replied. “I’m being detained, Laura.” Carroll narrated the encounter while the LAPD escorted him away. Ok, please?” “Ok, thank you, officer,” Carroll replied before attempting to communicate with Coates again. “If you guys can still hear me, what happened was, I was –” Carroll said before being cut off by an alleged New York Times reporter. “I’m Chris with The New York Times. We got video of you guys. If you need it later, call The New York Times.” The Post notes it is still unclear who “Chris” is at this time, and the Times has yet to confirm his role at the paper at the time of publication. “Thank you, I appreciate that,” Carroll said before going back to Coates. “So here’s what happened, Laura,” he said. “I was called over, and the officer told me to put my hands behind my back. I said, ‘Am I being arrested?’ He said, ‘You are being detained.’ I was walked out of the area. They took down my information.” Carroll’s audio suddenly cut out, leading Coates to turn to CNN Chief Law Enforcement Analyst John Miller for analysis. Miller, the former Deputy Commissioner of Intelligence and Counterterrorism of the NYPD, said police officers have to remain skeptical of “press” credentials when responding to protests because “you have anarchist groups and agitators who show up and say, ‘Well, I have a blog, so therefore I’m press. So therefore, even though I’ve been throwing bottles and screaming epithets, I’m not part of the protest. I want to be treated as media.’ So they sort through people one at a time.” The Los Angeles anti-ICE protests, which began somewhat peacefully early Saturday after reported raids in the area, deteriorated into more chaotic scenes by late afternoon, leading President Donald Trump to deploy thousands of National Guard troops to the area. On Sunday, a reporter for the CNN-affiliated 9News Australia was struck by a rubber bullet fired by law enforcement while conducting a live broadcast.

Rubio Defends Israeli Officials After 5 Western Governments Sanction Them For ‘Extremist Rhetoric’

Secretary of State Marco Rubio defended Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir on Tuesday after five Western governments imposed sanctions on them for “extremist rhetoric.” The countries sanctioning the two Israeli cabinet members include Canada, the United Kingdom, Norway, New Zealand, and Australia. They released a joint statement claiming the officials had “incited extremist violence and serious abuses of Palestinian human rights” in Judea and Samaria, also known as the West Bank. “These sanctions do not advance U.S.-led efforts to achieve a ceasefire, bring all hostages home, and end the war,” Rubio said in a statement. “We reject any notion of equivalence: Hamas is a terrorist organization that committed unspeakable atrocities, continues to hold innocent civilians hostage, and prevents the people of Gaza from living in peace.” Rubio added that the United States “urges the reversal of the sanctions” and “stands shoulder-to-shoulder with Israel.” DONALD TRUMP HAS A RECOMMENDATION FOR GRETA THUNBERG AFTER HER ‘SELFIE FLOTILLA’ The sanctions reportedly include travel bans and asset freezes, though the ministers are not known to have any assets in those countries. In the five countries’ statement, they claim that the situation in Judea and Samaria cannot be viewed separately from “the catastrophe” in Gaza. They added that they are “appalled by the immense suffering of civilians, including the denial of essential aid” and that they oppose “unlawful transfer of Palestinians from Gaza or within the West Bank” or any reduction of the territory of the Gaza Strip. The countries accuse Ben-Gvir and Smotrich of “extremist rhetoric” including allegedly advocating for the “forced displacement of Palestinians and the creation of new Israeli settlements.” Both Ben-Gvir and Smotrich are the Israeli boogeymen to the Israeli Left and Western media due to their extremely nationalistic and hawkish right-wing views, including for the expansion of settlements in Judea and Samaria and support for relocating Gazans from the Gaza Strip. CHRISTIAN PRO-ISRAEL CONFERENCE CANCELS AFTER ‘OVERWHELMING’ NUMBER OF CREDIBLE TERROR THREATS Smotrich responded in a speech on Tuesday while he was inaugurating the new Israeli settlement “Mitzpe Ziv” in the Hebron Hills. “I heard that Britain had decided to impose sanctions on me for obstructing the establishment of the Palestinian state,” he said. “The timing couldn’t be better.” He added that Britain has already once attempted to prevent Jews from “settling in the cradle of our homeland” and that “we are determined to continue building.” In the five countries’ statement, they repeatedly mention the two-state solution, a plan for both an Israeli and Palestinian state, claiming that it is “extremist rhetoric” to reject such a plan. U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Huckabee said that the United States no longer backs the establishment of a Palestinian state in Judea and Samaria, in an interview with Bloomberg published Tuesday. Terry Moran, formerly of ABC News, is out at the network following a “clear violation” of the newsroom’s policies in which he targeted White House aide Stephen Miller in a scornful social media post. Hawley Blames ‘Woke Corporations’ for His New Bill to Double Federal Minimum Wage

Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., introduced a bill on Tuesday that would more than double the federal minimum wage. Hawley’s bill, titled the Higher Wages for American Workers Act, would increase the federal minimum wage to $15 per hour in 2026 with future increases tied to inflation. Sen. Peter Welch, D-Vt., has joined Hawley on the effort as a co-sponsor. “The woke corporations have been eager to raise prices on everybody and employ as many illegals as possible—but they don’t want to pay Americans a good wage,” Hawley told The Daily Signal. “That should change. If they can afford to pay their CEOs millions, they can afford to pay hard-working Americans a decent wage.” In a previous statement, Hawley said that “for decades, working Americans have seen their wages flatline. One major culprit of this is the failure of the federal minimum wage to keep up with the economic reality facing hardworking Americans every day.” “This bipartisan legislation would ensure that workers across America benefit from higher wages,” Hawley added. If signed into law, the $15 minimum wage would more than double the $7.25 per hour minimum. Hawley’s home state of Missouri already has plans to raise its minimum wage to $15 next year, and 30 states and the District of Columbia have already set minimum wages over the federal minimum. Only 10 of those states and D.C., however, have set minimum wages at $15 or more. Eight states, on the other hand, default to the federal minimum wage by either not setting a minimum wage or setting a minimum wage below the federal level. The $7.25 per hour federal minimum wage has not changed since 2009. In 2007, Congress passed a series of incremental increases to the federal minimum wage, the last of which took place on July 24, 2009, when the minimum wage increased from $6.55 to $7.25 per hour. If the last minimum wage increase was pegged to inflation, the federal minimum wage would now be over $10.50; however, inflation rates can vary by state and locality. Welch, Hawley’s Democrat co-sponsor, told CBS, “We’re in the midst of a severe affordability crisis, with families in red and blue states alike struggling to afford necessities like housing and groceries.”  “A stagnant federal minimum wage only adds fuel to the fire. Every hard-working American deserves a living wage that helps put a roof over their head and food on the table—$7.25 an hour doesn’t even come close,” Welch added. E.J. Antoni, chief economist at The Heritage Foundation, told The Daily Signal that Hawley’s proposal is “another surefire way to eliminate jobs, especially starter jobs that people need to climb the ladder of success.” For example, Antoni said, “It’ll force fast food businesses toward more automation.” “The minimum wage is nothing more than failed central planning by the very bureaucrats who caused artificially high unemployment in the first place,” Antoni added. Though Hawley’s bill bucks the long-held Republican orthodoxy on the minimum wage, he’s not the first Republican to question the current level of the minimum wage. During an interview with NBC’s Kristen Welker in December 2024, then-President-elect Donald Trump said the minimum wage is “a very low number.” Trump, however, said to tread carefully. “Let me give you the down side, though. In California they raised it up to a very high number. And your restaurants are going out of business all over the place. The population is shrinking. It’s had a very negative impact,” Trump said. “You have a lot of businesses that are open and thriving because of the lower minimum wage. If you raise it too much—and you understand this, California went crazy. They went crazy. And people—the restaurants are closing all over. Many more people are hurt,” Trump continued. Nevertheless, Trump added, “But there is a level at which you could do it, absolutely.” Trump told Welker he “would consider” raising the minimum wage but he would “want to speak to the governors” first. “The other thing that is very complicated about minimum wage is places are so different. Mississippi and Alabama and great places are very different than New York or California, I mean in terms of the cost of living and other things,” Trump said. “So it would be nice to have just a minimum wage for the whole country, but it wouldn’t work because you have places where it’s very inexpensive to live, where a minimum wage which is at $8 or $9 might be, you know, might have very little effect because the cost of living in certain places is really low.” The post Hawley Blames ‘Woke Corporations’ for His New Bill to Double Federal Minimum Wage appeared first on The Daily Signal.

What Governors Newsom and Faubus Have in Common

I recently visited the Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site and couldn’t avoid seeing similarities to the current conflicts in Los Angeles. In 1957, federal law required that black students be allowed to enroll in previously all-white public schools, just as federal law currently requires that people without legal permission to be in the United States not be allowed to remain here. In 1957, angry mobs of protesters, encouraged by the governor and other civic leaders, prevented enforcement of the law by blocking nine black children from entering Central High School. Today, angry mobs of protesters in Los Angeles, encouraged by the governor, mayor, and the leader of the public sector union, are trying to prevent immigration officials from detaining aliens (including dangerous criminals) who are in the U.S. illegally and attacking federal buildings and law enforcement officials, both local and federal. In 1957, President Dwight Eisenhower intervened by mobilizing troops from the 101st Airborne to ensure that the law would be enforced and black students be allowed to enter the school even in the face of angry mobs. Eisenhower did this over the objections of local and state officials, who were engaged in massive resistance and thought it was inappropriate to use the military against “peaceful” protesters, who were not always “peaceful.” Eisenhower also federalized the Arkansas National Guard to ensure that they would obey his orders to assist with integration, even though Gov. Orval Faubus viewed this as an improper usurpation of the state’s claimed right to not comply with federal civil rights laws and to defy Supreme Court decisions ordering the desegregation of schools. Today, President Donald Trump has ordered Marines to deploy to Los Angeles and has assumed control over the National Guard to ensure that immigration laws can be enforced in the face of angry mobs trying to block that and to protect law enforcement officials and federal property. Echoing the defiance of Faubus in 1957, California Gov, Gavin Newsom accuses Trump of “turning the military against the American people” and “a serious breach of state sovereignty—inflaming tensions while pulling resources from where they’re actually needed.” And despite claims that the LA protests are “mostly peaceful,” there are numerous reports and videos of cars being set on fire, rocks thrown at immigration officials, stores looted, and private property defaced with graffiti. The scene in front of Central High School included horrible verbal abuse, threats, and intimidation, but nowhere near the same level of violence and property destruction happening right now in California. Eisenhower’s use of the military at Central High School is praised as a heroic stand for what is right. Eisenhower himself described his actions as establishing the principle that “mob rule cannot be allowed to override the decisions of our courts.” This positive assessment is repeated in almost every school textbook and in every popular account of the Central High School crisis. Why is Trump’s use of the military to enforce the law in LA being treated so differently than Eisenhower’s use of the military in Little Rock? The obvious explanation is that people care more about their policy preferences than they care about the consistent application of principle. It’s not mob rule that they find offensive, if the mob agitates for what they favor. In their eyes, “massive resistance” is justified to oppose enforcement of immigration law but not to oppose enforcement of integration because they like open borders and oppose segregation. All the alarmist talk about authoritarianism and the end of democracy is just projection. They don’t mind undermining immigration laws enacted by democratically elected representatives when it suits their interests. They didn’t mind ruling by executive edict when President Barack Obama declared, “We are not just going to be waiting for legislation in order to make sure that we’re providing Americans the kind of help that they need. I’ve got a pen, and I’ve got a phone.” They support the use of the military to advance causes they favor but see it as the start of fascism when used for causes they oppose. To be sure, there is plenty of hypocrisy to go around. But if people are sincerely interested in advancing the rule of law in our democratic republic, they might start by supporting legal actions even when they advance outcomes they dislike. House Advances Bill to Repeal Law Weaponized Against Pro-Lifers

The bill to repeal the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act, which the Biden administration used to throw peaceful pro-lifers in jail, passed the House Judiciary Committee in a 13-10 vote Tuesday. Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, who sponsored the bill to end the law abused by the Biden Department of Justice to arrest, prosecute, and jail pro-life demonstrators, has fought for months to bring his legislation to a vote. “The FACE Act has been undeniably—and predictably—weaponized to target pro-life Americans while turning a blind eye to the destruction, vandalism, and even firebombing of pregnancy resource centers and churches,” Roy told The Daily Signal. Passed in 1994, the FACE Act prohibits the use or threat of force and physical obstruction that “injures, intimidates, or interferes” with a person seeking to obtain or provide reproductive health services or to practice freedom of religion at a place of religious worship.   Though the FACE Act was intended to protect both abortion clinics and pro-life pregnancy centers, it has almost exclusively been used to prosecute pro-lifers.   Ninety-seven percent of FACE Act prosecutions from 1994 to 2024 were against pro-life Americans. This includes an elderly death camp survivor, a progressive activist, a 75-year-old grandmother, and a father of seven. The FACE Act Repeal Act of 2025, co-sponsored by Roy and 32 other Republican House members, would amend Title 18 of the United States Code to repeal prohibitions relating to freedom of access to clinic entrances. Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, introduced companion legislation in the Senate.  President Donald Trump pardoned 23 of the pro-lifers prosecuted under the FACE Act in one of his first executive actions after taking office on Jan. 20.   Now, Roy and his colleagues want to permanently end the law so it cannot become a weapon under future liberal presidential administrations.  “While President Trump has rightfully pardoned FACE Act defendants unfairly prosecuted under President Biden,” Roy said, “Congress must bring this bill to the floor and send it to the president’s desk, ensuring that no future administration can weaponize this law against pro-lifers ever again.” The government has too many “unnecessary laws that can be abused and weaponized against the people,” Roy said. “No American should have the heavy hand of the federal government come down on them simply because they’re speaking out for—or against—life, regardless of who is in control of the executive branch,” the Texas Republican said.
