Emerging Health Threat: Skin-Disfiguring Parasite Detected in the United States

The United States is facing a new health concern as a skin-disfiguring parasite‚ traditionally found in the Middle East‚ Latin America‚ and Asia‚ has now been detected within its borders. This alarming development has prompted warnings from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)‚ signaling a potential shift in the parasitic disease landscape of the country. Leishmaniasis‚ the disease caused by the Leishmania parasite‚ manifests in skin sores that can develop weeks after an individual has been bitten by infected phlebotomine sand flies. The disease is known to be endemic in tropical and subtropical regions‚ as well as southern Europe‚ but its emergence in the U.S. suggests a possible local spread of the parasite. CDC warns pet DOGS could start spreading new deadly flesh-eating parasite to humans in the UShttps://t.co/uPBtLdYFa6 — Wittgenstein (@backtolife_2023) October 22‚ 2023 Recent findings have identified an exclusive strain of Leishmania with distinct genetic characteristics‚ indicating that it is not associated with travel to endemic areas. This discovery raises concerns about the local transmission of the disease‚ particularly in southern states such as Texas‚ where cases have been reported. The CDC has identified 86 cases of leishmaniasis from individuals without any recent travel history outside of America. This revelation underscores the need for increased awareness among healthcare professionals‚ including clinicians‚ dermatologists‚ infectious disease specialists‚ and general practitioners‚ about the signs and symptoms of this neglected tropical disease. Skin-Disfiguring Parasite Infections Rise In Southern States‚ CDC Warns Read my latest article for the @DailyCaller: https://t.co/795XA8rLB3 — Julianna (@JuliannaFrieman) November 24‚ 2023 Leishmaniasis can present in various forms‚ with cutaneous leishmaniasis causing skin ulcers and visceral leishmaniasis affecting internal organs like the spleen‚ liver‚ and bone marrow. Dr. Mary Kamb‚ a medical epidemiologist at the CDC‚ emphasized that bites from the transmitting sand flies can sometimes go unnoticed‚ leading to asymptomatic cases or‚ when symptomatic‚ to ulcers that may start like a small volcano with a crater. Despite the growing concern‚ experts like Joshua Lieberman‚ assistant director of the molecular microbiology clinical laboratory at UW Medicine‚ assure the public that the risk of infection remains extremely low‚ especially for those who do not travel to endemic areas. However‚ the evolving understanding of leishmaniasis acquired in the U.S. necessitates vigilance and improved detection methods. For those who do contract the disease‚ treatment options are available and tend to be milder for the type of leishmaniasis seen in the U.S. compared to more severe forms contracted abroad. Nevertheless‚ certain types of the disease that affect organs or the mucous membranes of the nose and mouth may require more aggressive treatment with potent drugs. This health alert comes on the heels of reports last month regarding the discovery of a parasitic brain worm‚ Angiostrongylus cantonensis‚ in various coastal states. Originally from Asia‚ this parasite’s presence further highlights the importance of monitoring and responding to parasitic threats. As the nation grapples with this emerging health issue‚ it is crucial for both the public and the medical community to stay informed and proactive in preventing the spread of leishmaniasis. Increased surveillance‚ education‚ and research into local transmission dynamics will be key in managing this disease and safeguarding public health. The holidays are here‚ and if you celebrate Thanksgiving‚ you know that some good family tension is on the way. If you need to let loose a little this holiday season‚ here are some great games for you to get your frustrations out. 7 games like Street Fighter 6 Of course‚ when I talk about games “like Street Fighter 6‚” I really just mean any fighting game that might suit your fancy. That being said‚ certain fighting games may be more effective at letting loose any grievances you may have if you have a particularly dark sense of humor. (Fighting game heads‚ you already know.) Here are some great games like Street Fighter 6 if you need to let loose a little. Mortal Kombat 1 Image: Warner Bros. Thousands Of Bones From 52 Creatures Discovered In Ancient Animal Sacrifice Pit

The discovery of 6‚770 ancient bones belonging to 52 different animals dating to the Iron Age left archaeologists with a big question: what on earth went on here? In a new study‚ researchers in Spain believe they might have a clear answer. The jumbo bone pit was recently excavated at Casas del Turuñuelo‚ a site in southwest Spain that was inhabited during the Iron Age‚ around the fifth century BCE. After compiling their evidence‚ the researchers concluded that this mysterious burial ground was the site of ritualized animal sacrifice.Among the trove of bones were at least 41 horses‚ six cattle‚ four pigs‚ and a single dog. The layers of dirt show the animals were buried in three sequential phases. The animals in the first two phases were buried unaltered‚ but the skeletons in the last phase looked as if they were butchered for meat. Perhaps‚ the study authors claim‚ this is evidence that the ritual sacrifice eventually turned into a feast or banquet. Waste not‚ want not‚ so the saying goes. Many of the animals‚ such as the horses‚ were buried in pairs.Image credit: National Project Construyendo TartesoThe remains indicate that the animals died as healthy adults‚ affirming that it’s unlikely they simply perished due to a disease outbreak or natural disaster. Furthermore‚ some of the animals‚ particularly the horses‚ were laid to rest in organized pairs.“This arrangement of equid pairs bearing similar characteristics raises the possibility that they were cart animals sacrificed simultaneously. The idea is bolstered by their pathologies indicative of having served for riding and possibly to pull carts. The discovery of metallic bits in situ coupled with premolar wear and erosion of the gaps among more than half of the equids prove they were handled and controlled and thus served for work‚” write the study authors.Another important clue came in the form of burned vegetable matter at the site‚ which is typical of the remains left by burned offerings. It’s very unusual to find hard evidence of a mass animal sacrifice in the Mediterranean during the Iron Age‚ although there are a curious number of literary sources that suggest such an event did occur in ancient times. For instance‚ Homer’s Odyssey recounts the sacrifice of 81 black bulls by King Nestor on the beach of Pylos‚ while his other blockbuster‚ Iliad‚ speaks of 50 black rams being sacrificed by Peleus‚ the father of Achilles‚ if his son were to return alive from Troy.Solid archaeological evidence like this‚ however‚ is remarkably rare and makes the new discoveries at Casas del Turuñuelo exceptional. The new study is published in the journal PLOS ONE.

It May Take 400‚000 Years To Connect With Alien Civilizations‚ Scientists Say

The Fermi Paradox puts forward the following puzzling question‚ if humans are not special and civilizations can rise commonly in the cosmos‚ why are we yet to find anybody else? A science paper has a bold answer. Even if there are tens of thousands of civilizations out there‚ they need to survive for thousands of years to have a chance to talk to someone else. There have been some concerning solutions to the Fermi Paradox so just having to wait doesn't seem too bad. As reported in The Astrophysical Journal‚ researchers Wenjie Song and He Gao estimated the number of communicating extraterrestrial intelligent civilizations (CETIs) out there using two parameters: the probability of life appearing on a terrestrial planet and the stage of the planet’s host star's evolution at which the CETI would be born. The two researchers created nine scenarios where CETIs were either rare or common. If CETIs are rare (in the order of 110 across the whole Milky Way) then a communicating civilization might have to survive for 400‚000 years before it gets a signal from another. In their best-case scenario‚ with around 43‚000 CETIs‚ it would take at least 2‚000 years for a communicating civilization to get its first cosmic hello. “The reason why we have not received a signal may be that the communication lifetime of human is not long enough at present. However‚ it has been proposed that the lifetime of civilizations is very likely self-limiting (known as the Doomsday argument)‚ due to many potential disruptions‚ such as population issues‚ nuclear annihilation‚ sudden climate change‚ rogue comets‚ ecological changes‚ etc‚” the authors‚ from Beijing Normal University‚ wrote in the paper. “If the Doomsday argument is correct‚ for some pessimistic situations‚ humans may not receive any signals from other CETIs before extinction.”Probabilistic approaches to the Fermi Paradox have been brought forward in the last few years‚ suggesting that our current search for other civilizations is still very much limited and it might stay that way. After all‚ if someone was looking for us they would have to be within a very small region of the galaxy to actually spot some Earth signals. That said‚ the teams admit that there are huge uncertainties in their probabilities‚ so maybe there is a chance out there to communicate with aliens sooner rather than later.  “It is quite uncertain what proportion of terrestrial planets can give birth to life‚ and the process of life evolving into a CETI and being able to send detectable signals to space is highly unpredictable‚” the authors explain. But big uncertainty also works the other way‚ that there may just be very few CETIs out there. And who knows if they want to talk to us. Maybe the dark forests hypothesis is true after all.An earlier version of this article was published in May 2022.

Patterns Leading To Affairs In Committed Relationships Identified By Study

Patterns Leading To Affairs In Committed Relationships Identified By Study

A study has identified a pattern of gradual relationship decline prior to one person having an affair – and that once the affair happens‚ very rarely does a healthy relationship occur afterward. The results suggest that there are clear decreases in well-being prior to such a dramatic event‚ which may help explain and identify why such choices are made in relationships. “Infidelity is largely believed to have damaging consequences for personal and relationship well-being‚” write the authors.  “Yet the empirical literature remains inconclusive regarding whether infidelity leads to relationship problems‚ represents a mere symptom of troubled relationships‚ or both.” The study hoped to offer insight into whether relationship problems actually precede affairs or whether they mostly happen afterward (or even both)‚ so researchers from Tilburg University analyzed a large cohort of around 1‚000 German adults and followed them for an average of 8 years to show how events impact their relationships.  A total of 947 people (609 perpetrators of infidelity and 338 victims) were included‚ and the majority of those completed the study until the end. Each person was in a committed relationship and had experienced infidelity‚ and another group was matched to them that had not. Each person’s well-being was tracked using self-reporting‚ including overall psychological well-being as well as relationship satisfaction.  Firstly‚ the results showed that the obvious happens following an infidelity event – people who cheated on their partner reported lower self-esteem‚ lower relationship satisfaction‚ and lower intimacy. Interestingly‚ victims of the event only reported lower self-esteem and more conflict‚ but other measures of well-being did not decrease. However‚ prior to the events were when there were often dramatic changes in the relationship. Almost all relationship well-being indicators gradually declined leading up to the affair‚ with more conflict and less satisfaction being reported by both parties leading up to the event.  Following the event‚ the vast majority of the relationships did not recover‚ though with unfaithful women and couples with lower relationship commitments‚ this was not always true.  Sadly‚ for years after the event‚ affairs were different from most other life events: while most people recover their well-being after various serious events‚ people involved in infidelity did not recover. The study is published in Psychological Science. An earlier version of this article was published in Nov 2022.
