FOREIGN. Ukraine's military is investigating whether security rules for "mass events involving military personnel" were breached after a large number of soldiers died when Russia attacked a Ukrainian military celebration this week.

On Saturday evening, the Ukrainian military's strategic communications department announced that a Russian Iskander robot had hit personnel belonging to a brigade in the Zaporizhzhya region.

According to sources reported by the public service company Suspilne, the soldiers were in a formation to participate in a celebration when the attack occurred.

The military has confirmed that several soldiers lost their lives in the incident, but as usual has not released the exact number of deaths.

They are now investigating whether security rules for "mass events with military personnel" have been breached.

Defense Minister Rustem Umerov describes the incident as a "tragedy" and expresses his condolences to the families of the affected soldiers.
