PBS: Genocidal Chant Just Call for Palestinians to 'Live Freely Alongside Israelis’?

Monday’s edition of the PBS NewsHour featured disturbing equivocation about the Hamas slogan "from the river to the sea‚" a reference to the eradication of Israel. Host Geoff Bennett sounded reasonably tough on Harvard University president Claudine Gay‚ now under fire for her callous equivocation during recent congressional testimony on anti-Semitism on “elite” college campuses. Bennett: The president of Harvard University is still in her job at this hour‚ but there's been a real debate about whether she should be allowed to stay. There are dueling letters from Harvard's broader community‚ one calling on the university's governing board to force her out‚ and one asking the university to support her…. Reporter Laura Barron-Lopez played the “whatabout” game with the Republican questioner. Barron-Lopez: At Harvard University‚ turmoil over the fate of the schools president‚ Claudine Gay. Gay‚ MIT president Sally Kornbluth‚ and now outgoing University of Pennsylvania president Liz Magill came under fire last week for their testimony in a House hearing on rising antisemitism on their campuses. On Friday‚ Gay apologized for her remarks to The Harvard Crimson‚ saying: "Calls for violence or genocide against the Jewish community or any religious or ethnic group‚ are vile‚ they have no place at Harvard‚ and those who threaten our Jewish students will be held to account." The flash point of last Tuesday's hearing‚ a heated line of questioning from Republican representative Elise Stefanik‚ who herself has been criticized for not calling out anti-Semitism in her own party. Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY): And‚ Dr. Gay‚ at Harvard‚ does calling for the genocide of Jews violate Harvard's rules of bullying and harassment‚ yes or no? Claudine Gay (President‚ Harvard University): It can be‚ depending on the context. That’s when Barron-Lopez made her own offensive statement. Both Jews and Hamas-adjacent anti-Semites know what is meant when pro-Palestinian mobs shout “From the river to the sea‚ Palestine will be free‚” but Barron-Lopez suggested everyone was wrong: Barron-Lopez: Stefanik was referring to slogans that have been chanted at pro-Palestinian rallies on campus‚ such as "From the river to the sea‚ Palestine will be free." That phrase‚ adopted by Hamas‚ is seen by some as a call for the destruction of Israel and the killing of Jewish people. Others say it's a decades-old rallying call for a state where all Palestinians can live freely alongside Israelis. …. Barron-Lopez: Before Magill's resignation‚ more than 70 members of Congress‚ all but three of whom were Republican‚ signed a letter demanding the three presidents step aside. They said the testimony lacked moral clarity and illuminated the problematic double standards and dehumanization of Jewish communities. Meanwhile‚ some progressive members‚ including the only Palestinian-American in Congress‚ Rashida Tlaib‚ say allegations of antisemitism are being weaponized to silence legitimate criticisms of Israel. Tlaib (D-MI): Americans have a right to speak up‚ Americans have a right to the institutions they work at or the people that represent them to say‚ look‚ this is my opinion‚ I believe you should support X‚ Y‚ and Z. Tlaib was censured by her fellow House members for‚ among other anti-Israel lies‚ claiming that “from the river to the sea” isn’t a Hamas slogan about the eradication of Israel‚ but an “aspirational call for freedom” and “peaceful coexistence.”  Yet the NewsHour has relegated coverage of “progressive” Tlaib’s censure to a single headline roundup November 8‚ in which host Amna Nawaz benignly referred to it as “her criticism of Israel.” This segment casting doubt on the plain import of Hamas’s genocidal anti-Jewish chant was brought to you in part by BDO. A transcript is available‚ click “Expand.” PBS NewsHour 11/11/23 7:16:50 p.m. (ET) Geoff Bennett: The president of Harvard University is still in her job at this hour‚ but there's been real debate about whether she should be allowed to stay. There are dueling letters from Harvard's broader community‚ one calling on the university's governing board to force her out‚ and one asking the university to support her. One of those governing boards has reportedly been meeting about that today. It comes in response to last week's congressional hearing about a rise in antisemitism on some college campuses. Laura Barron-Lopez has the latest. Laura Barron-Lopez: At Harvard University‚ turmoil over the fate of the schools president‚ Claudine Gay. Gay‚ MIT president Sally Kornbluth‚ and now outgoing University of Pennsylvania president Liz Magill came under fire last week for their testimony in a House hearing on rising antisemitism on their campuses. On Friday‚ Gay apologized for her remarks to The Harvard Crimson‚ saying: "Calls for violence or genocide against the Jewish community or any religious or ethnic group are vile‚ they have no place at Harvard‚ and those who threaten our Jewish students will be held to account." The flash point of last Tuesday's hearing‚ a heated line of questioning from Republican representative Elise Stefanik‚ who herself has been criticized for not calling out antisemitism in her own party. Laura Barron-Lopez: Stefanik was referring to slogans that have been chanted at pro-Palestinian rallies on campus‚ such as "From the river to the sea‚ Palestine will be free." That phrase‚ adopted by Hamas‚ is seen by some as a call for the destruction Israel and the killing of Jewish people. Others say it's a decades-old rallying call for a state where all Palestinians can live freely alongside Israelis. Rep. Elise Stefanik: I will ask you one more time‚ does calling for the genocide of Jews violate Harvard's rules of bullying and harassment‚ yes or no? And is it antisemitic rhetoric? Claudine Gay: Antisemitic rhetoric‚ when it crosses into conduct That amounts to bullying‚ harassment‚ intimidation‚ that is actionable conduct and we do take action. Rep. Elise Stefanik: So the answer is yes‚ that calling for the genocide of Jews violates Harvard code of conduct‚ correct? Claudine Gay: Again‚ it depends on the context. Laura Barron-Lopez: The day after the hearing‚ Rabbi David Wolpe stepped down from the university's antisemitism advisory committee. Rabbi David Wolpe‚ Harvard Divinity School: I felt as though there was a profound disconnect between the attitude of the president's and my perception of the seriousness of the situation. Laura Barron-Lopez: Wolpe‚ a visiting scholar at Harvard's Divinity School‚ resigned over what he considers inaction by the university to confront antisemitism. Rabbi David Wolpe: Some of the things that it seemed to me Harvard needed to do almost immediately were to enforce the existing rules against harassment and bullying and so on more expeditiously‚ that is‚ more immediately that they were doing it‚ to undertake a major education campaign about Judaism‚ antisemitism‚ Jewish history. Laura Barron-Lopez: Even as pressure mounts for Gay's resignation‚ more than 600 faculty signed a letter saying Harvard should not cave to political pressure. Steven Pinker‚ a professor of psychology‚ didn't sign the letter‚ but said gays firing would not solve the problem. Steven Pinker‚ Harvard University: The reason that I don't think she should be called on to resign is that I think the problems run much deeper‚ and they should be addressed directly‚ rather than through a sacrificial scapegoat. I think that Harvard and American universities in general need a clear and conspicuous policy on free speech‚ so they don't selectively squelch speech. Reprehensible speech should be answered by more speech‚ by being refuted‚ not by being criminalized. Laura Barron-Lopez: At University of Pennsylvania‚ the consequences were swift. On Saturday‚ university president Liz Magill announced her resignation after donors‚ politicians‚ and some students called for her ouster. Days before‚ she issued a public apology. Liz Magill‚ Former President‚ University Of Pennsylvania: I want to be clear‚ a call for genocide of Jewish people is threatening‚ deeply so. In my view‚ it would be harassment or intimidation. Laura Barron-Lopez: Magill's testimony last week was similar to Gay's. Claire Finkelstein is a professor of law and philosophy at UPenn. He said‚ while Magill is a brilliant person‚ her testimony was disastrous. Claire Finkelstein‚ University of Pennsylvania Law School: I'm not calling for a restriction of criticisms of Israel or criticisms of Hamas or what have you‚ political speech and the ability to engage in it. But what has gotten out of hand is the idea that free speech on campus has to include such a level of openness to any kind of speech that even the worst threats and harassment should be protected. Laura Barron-Lopez: Before Magill's resignation‚ more than 70 members of Congress‚ all but three of whom were Republican‚ signed a letter demanding the three presidents step aside. Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI): Americans have a right to speak up‚ Americans have a right to the institutions they work at or the people that represent them to say‚ look‚ this is my opinion‚ I believe you should support X‚ Y‚ and Z. Laura Barron-Lopez: House Republicans have opened an investigation into the three universities and more than a dozen Democratic lawmakers asked schools to review and update their policies. And‚ at MIT‚ president Sally Kornbluth has not apologized‚ receiving support from her university's governing board. For the "PBS NewsHour‚" I'm Laura Barron-Lopez.

Meyers‚ Newsom Team Up To Attack Fox‚ 'Anti-Black' DeSantis

California Gov. Gavin Newsom traveled over to NBC and Late Night with Seth Meyers on Wednesday to recap his Fox News debate with GOP presidential candidate and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis where he smeared DeSantis as “anti-black” and‚ ironically considering he was on Late Night‚ lamented that Fox was an echo chamber. Meanwhile‚ Meyers wondered why Republicans are obsessed with San Francisco‚ despite admitting it has “very real problems.” About the debate‚ Meyers wondered‚ “When you started planning this‚ did you have higher expectations for where DeSantis would be in the polls?”      Newsom replied by going nasty bender against DeSantis: No‚ I didn't. I'll be honest with you‚ I've‚ and I'm dead serious about this‚ I developed a lot of animus towards him because of his animus towards all of you. You know‚ this guy is out there scapegoating vulnerable communities. He's attacking minorities‚ attacking women‚ and I don't like it and I wanted to push back against it and I felt like the party was a little timid on all this I mean‚ you know‚ he's out there talking about anti-woke‚ and I mean this‚ for me it's not anti-woke‚ what he really means is anti-black he's out there censoring historic facts‚ he's rewriting history. He was out there‚ you know‚ he eliminated AP African American Studies. He said slavery was somehow a workforce development program and he doubled down on that. Florida’s standards say that slaves learned skills that were later useful in life‚ not that slavery was some sort of benign job training program.  Meanwhile‚ Meyers has previously displayed enough self-awareness to know that his show is basically just primetime MSNBC with eccentric metaphors‚ but Newsom claimed it is Fox that is the echo chamber‚ “So for me‚ it's a very serious moment where I just felt it was important to blow back against that‚ against that narrative and hold these guys accountable on a network where they don't hear from guys like me‚ ever.”     Sticking with the debate‚ Meyers agreed “They certainly don't and well said” and declared “we've read a lot about what happened‚ and there were maybe some rules were broken and maybe the teleprompter was‚ you know maybe tilted –” Again‚ Newsom concurred‚ suggesting even the location of the debate was proof that it was stacked against him “What are you going to expect? It's Fox‚ it's in a red state. It's‚ you know‚ with Hannity‚ who has been out there platforming DeSantis 40 or 50 times.”  Later‚ Meyers turned to San Francisco‚ “Now it is obviously a major city in a state you're the governor of. San Francisco‚ a lot of big cities are having the problems of San Francisco‚ but it does feel like‚ you know‚ Republicans‚ conservatives‚ they try to make that the avatar for what's wrong with Democratic policies. What is it about San Francisco and also‚ those are very real problems that San Francisco has how do you even start to address them?” Newsom couldn’t even defend the city‚ instead he tried to suggest Republicans have some sort of Pelosi Derangement Syndrome‚ “they've been on a doom loop about San Francisco ever since Nancy Pelosi became Speaker.” He also claimed “California has outperformed the American economy‚ it's the tent pole of the American recovery. Twenty-seven percent of all American jobs came from the state just last month‚ it's the fifth largest economy in the world and its values are in stark contrast‚ the difference is daylight and darkness between the Republican Party‚ so for Fox‚ One America News‚ that thing Newsmax‚ you were referencing earlier‚ they have to focus on our failures in order for them to be right.” Politicians are focusing on the other party’s failures? Why‚ that’s never happened before.  Here is a transcript for the December 13-taped show: NBC Late Night with Seth Meyers 12/14/2023 12:57 AM ET SETH MEYERS: Did you -- but when you started planning this‚ did you have higher expectations for where DeSantis would be in the polls?  GAVIN NEWSOM: No‚ I didn't. So for me‚ it's a very serious moment where I just felt it was important to blow back against that‚ against that narrative and hold these guys accountable on a network where they don't hear from guys like me‚ ever.  MEYERS: They certainly don't and well said‚ you went into it and I think everybody knew you were going into it‚ that it would be a two-on-one situation I don't think there was any expectation that‚ you know‚ Sean Hannity had a horse in that race‚ and it wasn't you‚ but was there dirty pool because we've read a lot about what happened‚ and there were maybe some rules were broken and maybe the teleprompter was‚ you know maybe tilted – NEWSOM: Yeah‚ yeah. I mean‚ all of the -- you know‚ come on. What are you going to expect? It's Fox‚ it's in a red state. It's‚ you know‚ with Hannity‚ who has been out there platforming DeSantis 40 or 50 times but look‚ I guess the whole question‚ and this is the debate we're having in this country‚ do we-- is it smart to engage on their terms?  And I feel like it's important‚ man. We're just in these -- we're living in two different worlds‚ right.  MEYERS: Yes. NEWSOM: These are microcults and people are in this filter-bubble‚ only listening to one thing all the time and that's why I started going on Fox and that's why I thought it was important to have a 90-minute live debate‚ at least so I could assert or push back also‚ I mean this‚ and I mean this in my core‚ it was an honor to be there‚ to tell the truth about the Biden record and to make the case for Biden's re-election.  … MEYERS: Now it is obviously a major city in a state you're the governor of. San Francisco‚ a lot of big cities are having the problems of San Francisco‚ but it does feel like‚ you know‚ Republicans‚ conservatives‚ they try to make that the avatar— NEWSOM: Yeah. MEYERS: -For what's wrong with Democratic policies. What is it about San Francisco and also‚ those are very real problems that San Francisco has— NEWSOM: Yeah. MEYERS: -- how do you even start to address them? NEWSOM: Well‚ I mean‚ first‚ you own the issues‚ and then you start to address the issues but look‚ they've been on a doom loop about San Francisco ever since Nancy Pelosi became Speaker.  MEYERS: Yeah. NEWSOM: I mean‚ let’s remember‚ California is -- Nancy Pelosi’s the speaker of San Francisco‚ you got Kamala Harris was a former senator from California. California has outperformed the American economy‚ it's the tent pole of the American recovery. Twenty-seven percent of all American jobs came from the state just last month‚ it's the fifth largest economy in the world and its values are in stark contrast‚ the difference is daylight and darkness between the Republican Party‚ so for Fox‚ One America News‚ that thing Newsmax‚ you were referencing earlier‚ they have to focus on our failures in order for them to be right.  And so‚ we're used to it out there. And yet we still maintain our resiliency and I'll tell you‚ San Francisco is a special place‚ it is a unique and special place. Incredibly resilient and vibrant and I'm very proud of it and yeah‚ I'm defensive about it‚ as we are here in New York and other places I'm driving around New York. Are you kidding? This place during the holidays— MEYERS: It’s really good. NEWSOM: -- is there anything else like it in the world— MEYERS: Yeah. NEWSOM: -- it's beautiful so don't believe all that negativity.

Pick your poison: Inflation or recession

When King Louis XV of France famously said‚ “After me‚ the deluge‚” he at least believed his profligate failure theater wouldn’t cause the deluge until after he was gone. The same cannot be said for Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and the bipartisan political class that is selling us into a permanent debt and affordability crisis right now. There is nowhere to run because time is already up. The Treasury Department this year will have auctioned off more treasury notes than during any other year in history‚ likely topping the 2020 record. With less than three weeks left in the year‚ the Wall Street Journal reports the Treasury has already actioned off $20.8 trillion in notes — just shy of the $21 trillion auctioned in 2020. Today‚ the gross debt has more than doubled and annual interest on the debt costs five times what it did just 12 years ago. These numbers are unconscionable. Despite less than 4% unemployment‚ we are issuing as much new debt as we did during the lockdowns‚ which catalyzed the point of no return in the debt crisis. What does this mean in the real world? To offload this much debt servicing on the private market‚ the Treasury will need to offer higher yields for private banks and foreign countries to continue buying our debt. That will require exponentially more money printing and continue to crush consumers with core price inflation regardless of the price of oil. Why the monetary manipulation game is over For years‚ our government was able to service debt on the cheap — growing government without inducing inflation — because U.S. Treasurys were regarded as good as cash and were in high demand. But today the government has more to auction than natural demand will buy. Right now‚ the market is predicting the Federal Reserve will cut rates next year under the false pretense that it has defeated inflation. In reality‚ the board of governors can set the federal funds rate as low as it wants‚ but if the governors continue to spend this much money and service this much debt‚ the market itself will naturally drive up yields to draw enough investors willing to buy Treasurys. This means first-time home buyers will continue to face elevated mortgage rates at a time when housing prices are still near record highs. For example‚ on Monday‚ the Fed was forced to sell $37 billion worth of 10-year notes for close to 4.3%‚ which was a “tail” of 1.4 basis points. When the yield is higher than expected‚ it’s called a tail‚ and when it’s lower‚ it’s called a “stop-through.” Auctions that meet expectations are said to be “on the screws.” The three-year auction also went badly‚ with low demand from foreign investors. We already saw how the last 30-year auction was a disastrous tail‚ but even with the shorter-term 10-year notes‚ the trend has been troubling. Since the end of 2021‚ just four of the 24 10-year auctions have been stop-throughs‚ while 20 of them have been tails. The declining demand is driven by the drop in foreign investors. China no longer wants to buy our debt. China's share of holding in U.S. Treasurys hit a 14-year low this year‚ down 40% from a decade ago. Japan‚ which has long been the largest holder of U.S. debt‚ now owns the lowest percentage of marketable Treasurys on record. “We appreciate and welcome your concluding that the United States is such a safe haven because we appreciate your investment in U.S. treasuries‚” Biden told then Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao in Beijing. “And very sincerely‚ I want to make clear that you have nothing to worry about in terms of their — their viability.” Well‚ that was back in the good old days when interest on the debt was $230 billion and the gross federal debt was $14.5 trillion. Today‚ the gross debt has more than doubled and annual interest on the debt costs five times what it did just 12 years ago.One can only imagine the sorts of favors the Biden administration will have to sell to China along with those Treasury auctions. Given that roughly one-third of our gross debt is set to mature next year‚ the size of Treasury auctions in 2024 is slated to be 23% larger than this year. According to the CBO‚ outlays for the first two months of this fiscal year are already outpacing last year’s record numbers by 17%. This is the dirty little secret on how the Federal Reserve lost control over the economy. The Fed can no longer rely on tinkering with the federal funds rates to thread the needle between economic growth and inflation. Despite the drop in oil prices — which is due primarily to decreased demand stemming from an economic slowdown — prices generally have not fallen. High prices are here to stay as long as the Fed continues to print money — and print it must. Not just a federal balance sheet problem The average home mortgage payment is now $3‚322‚ nearly twice what it was when Biden took office. Default on credit card loans from small lenders is now at 7.51%‚ higher than during the 2008 financial crisis or even COVID. The Fed might be celebrating that prices are not rising as quickly as before‚ but it is astounding how vital consumer prices are maintaining record high levels given that oil prices have plummeted. The November CPI report still showed certain vital services surging above headline numbers: Car insurance +19.2% Transportation +10.1% Car repairs +8.5% Rent +6.9% Homes +6.7% Food away from home +5.3% Electricity +3.4% As a result of the consumer strain from the past two years‚ Americans are broke. Fidelity‚ the largest holder of 401(K) funds‚ reports that Americans have been increasingly tapping into their retirement accounts to afford living expenses. The percentage of account holders who took a “hardship withdrawal” from their 401(K)s in 2023 was 2.3%‚ up from 1.8% last year. The number of Americans taking loans from retirement accounts also rose from 2.4% to 2.8% during the third quarter of this year. Biting inflation along with the drop in the stock market have depleted the savings and assets of most Americans. According to a recent Federal Reserve report‚ household net worth fell by $1.3 trillion from July to September. The only time we typically see net worth going backward is during a recession. And this is the conundrum in which the debt crisis has placed the average American consumer. Endless debt servicing will create long-term sticky price elevation with the only escape being a severe recession. So pick your poison: inflation or recession. This is no longer about greed and apathy toward the next generation. The continued growth of government is suicide for this generation. The deluge is upon us now.

Six teens found guilty in connection to Islamist beheading of French teacher

A high school history teacher was beheaded by an Islamic refugee in a Paris suburb on Oct. 16‚ 2020. Six teenagers who had a hand in Samuel Paty's savage execution were convicted Friday by a French court. Among the convicts was a Muslim student who spread lies about the nature of the teacher's Oct. 6 lesson on freedom of expression as well as other teens who helped set up the bloody ambush. Adults suspected of complicity in the terrorist murder‚ including the Moroccan father of the untruthful teen‚ are set for trial in 2024. Although some justice has ostensibly been meted out‚ it appears to be of little consolation to a country struggling with radicalism and the apparent fallout of multiculturalism. The Islamist murder plot Paty‚ 47‚ was a teacher at Collège Bois-d'Aulne‚ in a suburb northwest of Paris. On Oct. 6‚ 2020‚ he showed Charlie Hebdo caricatures of Mohamed to his class during a lesson on freedom of expression‚ posing the question‚ "To be or not to be Charlie?" The lesson was timely since Charlie Hebdo‚ a satirical magazine‚ had been targeted by Islamic terrorists multiple times in recent memory‚ including the previous month when two employees were stabbed outside its headquarters. In 2015‚ two Islamic terrorists gunned down 12 people at the magazine's headquarters. In 2011‚ the magazine's office was firebombed. One of Paty's students‚ a then-13-year-old Muslim girl‚ was suspended that month for skipping school. Rather than own up to her truancy‚ the Guardian reported that the teen told her father‚ Brahim Chnina‚ that she had been ousted for confronting Paty over the freedom of expression class. According to the yarn she spun‚ Paty dismissed Muslim students from the class so that he could show non-Muslims "a photograph of the Prophet naked." She further claimed the upon confronting Paty‚ the teacher had her suspended. Chnina‚ an Islamist preacher who migrated from the 99% Sunni Muslim nation of Morocco‚ subsequently took to social media to condemn Paty and demand that he be fired. Abdullakh Anzorov‚ an 18-year-old Islamist migrant from Chechnya‚ picked up on the enraged father's cues and began plotting the murder. Prosecutors indicated that Anzorov traveled 50 miles from Normandy to Conflans-Sainte-Honorine to assassinate Paty‚ reported the BBC. Five other teens‚ between the ages of 13 and 15 at the time‚ then helped Anzorov identify and ambush Paty. The terrorist paid them roughly $327 for their services. With the help of the teens‚ Anzorov tracked down Paty as he walked home from work and used a cleaver to hack off his head. Witnesses reportedly heard the attacker shout‚ "Allahu Akbar‚" during the commission of the assassination. Police responded to the scene and successfully gunned down the terrorist‚ but not before he could boast of the slaying on Twitter. BBC indicated 15 people were taken into custody following the murder‚ including Anzorov's parents‚ brother‚ and grandfather. Additionally‚ various Muslim organizations that allegedly trafficked in outrage over the false claims concerning Pety's lesson were scrutinized. The Collective Against Islamophobia in France was‚ for instance‚ deemed an "enemy of the state" by the country's interior minister. First set of convictions The teenage girl who spread the initial lie about Paty was revealed in court not to have been in class during the lesson. She was found guilty Friday of making false accusation charges and slanderous comments‚ reported the Guardian. For her hand in Paty's demise‚ the untruthful teen was given an 18-month suspended prison sentence. The five teens who helped Anzorov with his murder plot were found guilty criminal conspiracy with intent to cause violence. Four of the facilitators were given suspended sentences. The fifth was sentenced to six months in prison but may ultimately serve time on the outside under electronic surveillance. Virginie Le Roy‚ a lawyer representing the victim's family‚ told the French press‚ "The role of the minors was fundamental in the sequence of events that led to his assassination." Eight adults will be tried next year for their alleged hand in the assassination. In addition to Chnina and members of the terrorist's family‚ Anzorov's friends‚ identified as Azim E. and Naim B.‚ will be tried for alleged "complicity in a terrorist murder‚" according to France 24. The duo are said to have helped the killer pick out and buy the murder weapon. Growing concern The convictions are unlikely to ease tensions in France‚ where the struggle with what the New York Times characterized in 2021 as a failure of integration appears to have come to a head. Recently‚ Muslim students at a school west of Paris raged over their art teacher's exhibition of a Renaissance painting portraying a Greek mythology story and featuring scantily clad women‚ reported the Daily Mail. Facing threats from Islamists‚ various teachers went on strike. This summer‚ the country faced race riots over the police-involved shooting of an Algerian teen that were almost as destructive to the European nation as the 2020 BLM riots were to the United States.
