NBC Probes Biden Officials on Efforts to Remove Him from Office/Ticket

Special Counsel Robert Hur’s report and President Biden’s disastrous press conference addressing the report’s findings were the topics of discussion that dominated NBC’s Meet the Press on Sunday. Amid moderator Kristen Welker’s sparing with Biden administration and campaign officials on the President’s mishandling of classified documents‚ she also surprisingly pressed them on whether or not there were discussions on removing him from office via the 25th Amendment or swamping out him as the Democratic candidate for 2024. Welker’s first guest was Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas; and before she ever got to the Republican effort to impeach him or the crisis at the border‚ she asked him about Biden’s mental fitness for office. Before pivoting to those issues‚ she pressed Mayorkas if he or members of Biden’s cabinet had discussed invoking the 25th Amendment: WELKER:  Let me ask you about what we are hearing from some Republicans. More than a dozen Republican lawmakers are now calling for the 25th amendment to be invoked‚ just to give our viewers a sense of what that means it basically means the cabinet would have the authority to start the process of frying to remove the president if he or she is deemed incapable of serving. What is the reaction to those calls? Has that ever been discussed? MAYORKAS: I don't engage in governing and I follow the president's agenda which I scrupulously do. I have to tell you‚ I have met with the president many‚ many times over the course of the past three years. I prepare intensely from those meetings and I follow up with those meeting to get the answers to the questions he has posed and he is probing and focused on the mission.     After Mayorkas danced around the idea‚ Welker doubled down and wanted a clearer answer: WELKER: As far as you know‚ the 25th Amendment has not been discussed? MAYORKAS: Not at all. Further in the show‚ Welker interviewed Biden Campaign national co-chair Mitch Landrieu and brought up the whispers that the President’s donors were looking for another Democrat to step in that they could throw money at. “People are watching him and again‚ 76 percent of them have those concerns and so do some of his donors‚” she told Landrieu. She read from a Washington Post report that said Biden’s donors were asking about younger possible candidates like California Governor Gavin Newsom. Landrieu used the opportunity to talk them down off the ledge: WELKER: People are watching him and again‚ 76 percent of them have those concerns and so do some of his donors. This is what The Washington Post is saying‚ quote‚ “Top Biden donors were fielding calls and text messages from anxious Democrats asking if other Democrats still had time to jump into the presidential race. ‘When is Gavin getting in?’ or ‘How about Whitmer or Shapiro?’ buzzed around Democratic circles over the last 24 hours.” How do you respond to Democrats who say they want to see a change at the top of the ticket? LANDRIEU: I’m in the process of doing it right now and demonstrating the President’s accomplishments have really been second to none‚ and Joe Biden is going to get up every day. The one thing Joe Ben is never going to do – and you can count on this – He is never ever going to quit because that’s not what he's done his entire life; notwithstanding that‚ by the way‚ he lost another child earlier in his life and he got up and went to work. And he had difficulty with another son and he got up and went to work and he's going to keep doing that as we move the country forward. ABC’s staunchly racist and anti-Semitic co-host of The View‚ Sunny Hostin (the descendant of slave owners) floated a similar idea during Friday’s show. “Once all of the delegates are received‚ the DNC will be certifying the delegates‚ right? And the count and Gavin Newsom can be swapped out if Joe Biden decides to step aside‚” she explained. The transcript is below. Wild police bodycam video shows Ohio cop getting plowed by stolen vehicle‚ firing shots at suspect from hood of the car

Intense bodycam video from Ohio shows the moment that a police officer was rammed by a car‚ flipped to the hood‚ and fired shots as the vehicle raced on a wild ride. On Wednesday afternoon‚ Columbus police officers attempted to make a traffic stop on a 2015 Toyota Corolla that had been reported stolen from Lancaster‚ Ohio. Police cruisers raced through a neighborhood to pull over the stolen car. The vehicle stopped at a gas station and did circles. Police gave the driver verbal commands to stop and show her hands‚ but she disobeyed. Police placed spike strips at the exits of the gas station. Police bodycam video shows an officer approaching the stolen vehicle with his gun drawn. The Columbus police sergeant orders the driver to stop‚ but she instead puts the car in reverse. The dramatic police bodycam footage reveals the sudden moment that the woman slams on the gas and plows into the officer. He flips to the hood of the car and fires 12 shots into the windshield and hood of the vehicle. The sergeant managed to stay on the speeding car for a few seconds before tumbling onto the road. The runaway vehicle crashed into two cars stopped at a red light down the road. The driver‚ Holly Graham‚ suffered a gunshot wound to both of her upper thighs and one to her lower torso. According to the Columbus Dispatch‚ "As officers start to assess Graham's injuries and apply tourniquets to each of her legs‚ Graham asks repeatedly for her water‚ which she says is in the center console of the car."Graham reportedly said‚ "If you're trying to help me‚ water is the best for it.""I didn't (expletive) mean to hit the mother (expletive)‚" Graham is heard saying‚ according to the outlet. The 32-year-old allegedly said‚ "Does anybody have an (expletive) cigarette? For real‚ does anybody have a cigarette?" Graham was transported to OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital.WSYX confirmed‚ "Either late Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning‚ Graham was in custody on a warrant from 2020."Graham was charged with felonious assault on a police officer. The police sergeant was taken to a hospital‚ but was released Friday. His identity has not been released‚ but he has worked for for the Columbus police for 10 years.Like Blaze News? Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin hospitalized again with 'emergency issue‚' weeks after cancer treatment

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin was transported to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on Sunday afternoon. Austin was exhibiting symptoms of an "emergent bladder issue‚" according to the Pentagon."Today‚ at approximately 2:20 pm‚ Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III was transported by his security detail to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center to be seen for symptoms suggesting an emergent bladder issue‚" the Pentagon said in a press release. "The Deputy Secretary of Defense and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff have been notified. Additionally‚ White House and Congressional notifications have occurred."Pentagon Press Secretary Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder initially said Austin would retain his duties as secretary of defense while in the hospital. However‚ Ryder said on Sunday night that Austin had "transferred the functions and duties of the office" to Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks.Austin is scheduled to make his first overseas trip since his initial hospitalization this week.Austin was scheduled to depart on Tuesday for Brussels to hold a meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group. Austin was also scheduled to attend a regular meeting of NATO defense ministers. It was not clear if those plans were canceled because of the hospitalization. Sunday's announcement came just weeks after his first hospitalization. Austin previously underwent a surgical procedure for prostate cancer on Dec. 22. However‚ he suffered from a urinary tract infection and serious intestinal complications. Austin was hospitalized on Jan. 1‚ but President Joe Biden was unaware of the concerning medical situation for three days.Austin had transferred his authority to his deputy the day after he was admitted to the hospital. The secrecy of Austin's hospitalization was widely criticized.Austin returned to in-person work at the Pentagon at the end of January. "We did not handle this right and I did not handle this right‚" Austin admitted during a press conference earlier this month."I should have told the president about my cancer diagnosis‚" he added. "I should have also told my team and the American public‚ and I take full responsibility."Austin defended himself by saying he is a "pretty private guy." "I never like burdening others with my problems‚" he said. "It's just not my way."Austin said he directly apologized to President Biden for not informing his administration about his hospitalization‚ and he was "deeply sorry." Like Blaze News? There’s a big problem with Instagram and Threads no longer amplifying political content

Much of tech journalism these days amounts to the rewriting of press releases and corporate blog posts. A good example of this came on Friday‚ when the blogosphere cranked out one post after another that dutifully regurgitated the announcement of Meta’s decision to no longer amplify “political” content on Instagram and Threads from accounts that users don’t follow -- in a presidential election year‚ no less. As is the case with so many bad ideas‚ this one sounds great as long as you don’t look at it too closely. The intention here‚ basically‚ is that outrage-inducing political clickbait and disinfo paid for by Russian troll farms that’s dressed up to look like news will no longer invade the sanctity of your feeds and Explore pages. Which is fine‚ I guess‚ except for one thing. All that content isn’t going to magically start keeping its distance from Threads and Instagram users on its own. In order for Meta to prevent users from seeing that political content‚ in other words‚ the company must first identify which posts are political‚ and which are not. Moreover‚ the only way Meta can possibly identify which posts are political is for the company to also define what counts as political. Logic suggests that the company needs to know what it's looking for‚ and must then proactively find it‚ before it can go about hiding it from users. And that‚ by the way‚ is the most important takeaway from Friday’s announcement: What's most noteworthy was not that Instagram and Threads will no longer amplify an account's political posts to non-followers‚ which is what every headline declared. Rather‚ it's that Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta‚ in the midst of a presidential campaign season‚ has chosen this moment to define what counts as political content -- and whether you see it or not. This is a bad idea for so many reasons‚ and to understand why just look at Meta's unsatisfying and banal definition of what counts as political content. It's content that‚ and I quote‚ is "potentially related to things like laws‚ elections‚ or social topics." Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg speaks at an event in New York City. Image source: Drew Angerer/Getty Images If‚ again‚ you look beyond the press release‚ it becomes all-too-apparent how bizarre an endeavor is. Let’s say‚ for example‚ there’s a post on Instagram or Threads that expresses a user's excitement at attending an upcoming rally in support of LGBT rights. Is that a political post? To a conservative voter‚ probably‚ while to the user who made that post the content is simply an extension of their identity. Or what if‚ say‚ a law professor writes an explainer post that elucidates the 14th Amendment to help their followers better understand it -- importantly‚ without mentioning Trump by name (the 14th Amendment bars anyone who previously swore to upload the Constitution from holding office if they're found to have engaged in "insurrection or rebellion.") Is that political content? And speaking of Trump‚ what if a post simply said something along the lines of: Did you see what Trump did when the camera landed on him at the Super Bowl yesterday? Honestly‚ it never ceases to amaze me how logically inconsistent people can be in their attitudes toward Meta -- and to Zuckerberg‚ specifically. Facebook is a privacy nightmare! Zuck is too powerful! And speaking of power‚ I want Zuck's systems to be able to zero in on specific‚ individual posts from users and hide them if they're too political! Obviously‚ that's a staggeringly absurd contradiction‚ but here we are. No wonder the demise of the social web is well underway. In terms of policing content‚ these big platforms have careened from the earlier eras of letting 'er rip and then squelching reach unless you pay to play‚ to now becoming quasi-Ministries of Truth in tandem with an automation at scale of what content users are and aren't allowed to see. Perhaps the next press release will clarify how all this shakes out. Don't Miss: Instagram and Threads will start limiting the recommendation of political content The post There’s a big problem with Instagram and Threads no longer amplifying political content appeared first on BGR.
