Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) may be retiring at the end of his term‚ but he appears to have a plan to keep things interesting on his way out the door — at least as far as judicial nominations are concerned. According to a report published Wednesday by Politico‚ Manchin has announced a plan to stage his own personal “filibuster‚” refusing to vote in favor of any of President Joe Biden’s judicial nominees if they don’t also have Republican support. And it doesn’t have to be a lot of support‚ Manchin said‚ adding that he would be willing to consider a “yea” vote if just one Republican were convinced to vote with Democrats. “Just one Republican. That’s all I’m asking for. Give me something bipartisan. This is my own little filibuster. If they can’t get one Republican‚ I vote for none. I’ve told [Democrats] that. I said‚ ‘I’m sick and tired of it‚ I can’t take it anymore‚'” Manchin explained. The West Virginia Democrat said that what he really wanted was to see more bipartisan cooperation‚ and for that reason‚ he was simply asking his colleagues to put in the effort and court Republican votes. “If they don’t have a Republican‚ I’m opposing. That’s my way of saying: ‘I’m leaving this place‚ I’ve tried everything I can. Don’t tell me you can’t get one.’ If you’ve got a decent person you can at least get one. Just go ask Lisa [Murkowski‚ R-AK]‚ go ask Susan [Collins‚ R-ME]‚ even Lindsey [Graham‚ R-SC]‚” Manchin continued. “Lisa and Susan both are not controlled by just voting party line‚ I know that. But you’ve got to ask them.” Manchin’s mention of the filibuster – which then-Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) abandoned for judicial nominees in 2013 — was an apparent reference to the fact that his own party has been pushing efforts to remove the legislative filibuster altogether. An avid supporter of TikTok — a controversial social media app that is owned by ByteDance‚ a Chinese Communist Party-controlled company — threatened to murder Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) this week over a bill in the U.S. Senate that would force the sale of the company or else it will be banned in the U.S. “This is a voicemail my office received last night‚” Tillis posted on X. “TikTok’s misinformation campaign is pushing people to call their members of Congress‚ and callers like this who communicate threats against elected officials could be committing a federal crime.” “The Communist-Chinese aligned company is proving just how dangerous their current ownership is‚” Tillis added. “Great work‚ TikTok.” The company has repeatedly sent out alerts to all of its users encouraging them to call members of Congress and pressure them into not passing the bill. The U.S. House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed the bill last week in a 352-65 vote. The New York Post said that the company said in a recent alert to users: “If the Senate votes to ban TikTok‚ this means you could lose your right to self-expression.” The push alert also provides users with the information about how to contact their state’s senators. A navy nurse who is one of the last remaining links to Pearl Harbor just celebrated her 105th birthday surrounded by friends‚ family‚ and fans. The milestone party took place on March 16‚ 2024‚ and turned out to be a much bigger celebration than Alice could have imagined. Not only did her friends and several generations of family show up‚ but a current and a former mayor were in attendance. “I’m happy to see everyone!” Alice told Fox KTVU. “It’s a thrill!” Alice Darrow was stationed at Mare Island Naval Shipyard in Vallejo‚ California‚ during WWII. The base was where many injured service members were sent after the Pearl Harbor attack. While Alice was on hand to help during the aftermath‚ it was a soldier who came to her in April 1942 who linked her to Pearl Harbor. The Navy Nurse Lived a True WWII Love Story With a Pearl Harbor Solider At that time‚ a young man with appendicitis named Dean Darrow. came under her care. When doctors scanned his body before surgery‚ they found that he had a bullet in his heart. As it turned out‚ Dean had been on the battleship West Virginia on Dec. 7‚ 1941. When the Japanese dropped the bomb‚ it knocked Dean off the battleship. When a rescue boat went for him‚ he was hit in the back by enemy fire. “He was trying to pull himself up on the boat‚” Alice said. “They shot him. He got shot in the back.” Somehow‚ Dean survived four months with a 7.7 mm bullet in his heart. And his appendicitis turned into a stroke of luck that led doctors to discover it. Before Dean went under the knife‚ he asked Alice if she would go on liberty‚ which is a brief leave authorized by the military‚ if he survived. “I said‚ ‘Sure‚ why not?’ They didn’t think he was going to make it anyways‚” she admitted. Doctors removed Dean’s bullet and appendix that day‚ and he did survive. So Alice Darrow stood by her word—the two said “I do” two months later and were married until his death in 1991. Alice and Dean Darrow raised four children and remained active in military services. And Alice still has the bullet to this day. “They took out the bullet and I replaced the hole in his heart with my love‚” she told the Times-Herald.
