WashPost's Philip Bump Claims Fox's 'Fake' Facts Hurt Trust in MSNBC

Appearing as a guest on Friday's The 11th Hour on MSNBC‚ Washington Post columnist Philip Bump alleged that right-leaning media outlets like Fox News and Breitbart tell "fake things" to their viewers and‚ in doing so‚ cause people to disbelieve the "true things" that are discussed by MSNBC and The Washington Post. This lack of self-awareness of how Bump and his MSNBC friends sound very partisan in their journalistic hot takes came during a discussion of the Los Angeles Times and Time magazine announcing layoffs and the decline of local newspapers. Host Stephanie Ruhle began the segment: On Tuesday the L.A. Times announced it is laying off more than 100 people. That is over 20 percent of its newsroom. In the last week alone‚ there have been job cuts at Sports Illustrated and Time and National Geographic. It has been even worse for local newspapers -- over 130 closed or merged in the last year. She then turned to Bump and posed: "Philip‚ as we like to say on this show‚ the truth matters but only if you hear it. We're going into a general election. How important is it for people to know the truth and understand what's actually happening in our country?" Bump declared that journalists like himself "want to make sure we understand what's happening in the world and convey it as well as we can to people‚" and then took aim at right-leaning media: ...I think one understated thing -- and then I think we all understand it‚ but others may not -- is the extent to which there exists an alternate reality -- a different universe of media which is telling you a very different story. I wrote about this last year for Nieman Lab for the Nieman School‚ and‚ you know‚ the point that I tried to make there was‚ there is a universe which is very big and very strong saying things that it wants to hear and its base wants to hear. In the Nieman Lab piece‚ he suggested "there is now an omnipresent rumble of dismissal and hatred and violence‚ largely from the right." (Violence?) Bump further complained: And it's bigger and stronger‚ and there's been so little pushback on it that it makes the fake things they're seeing seem more true because we have all of these more media outlets. And it makes true things that are happening in the outside world -- here and in the The Washington Post and other places -- makes that seem more false‚ right? Because we've so long let this sort of exist and not challenged it‚ we end up in the scenario where they don't view what we're doing as valuable because they have Fox News and they have Breitbart who's telling them the real thing. And they have Donald Trump who's telling them the real thing. That's a problem. Bump didn't offer specifics of the "fake" news on Fox or Breitbart. It's just assumed that anything pro-Trump is loaded with deceit.  Ironically‚ it was just earlier the same day when‚ on the same network‚ MSNBC analyst Maria Hinojosa spread misinformation about border security to undermine presidential candidate Donald Trump in such a fashion that contrasts sharply with the more accurate reporting that is frequently seen on Fox News and rarely seen on outlets like CNN (where Bump also frequently appears) and on MSNBC. Transcript follows: MSNBC's The 11th Hour January 26‚ 2024 11:37 p.m. Eastern STEPHANIE RUHLE: On Tuesday the L.A. Times announced it is laying off more than 100 people. That is over 20 percent of its newsroom. In the last week alone‚ there have been job cuts at Sports Illustrated and Time and National Geographic. It has been even worse for local newspapers -- over 130 closed or merged in the last year. Our "Nightcap" is still with me. Let's get into this. Philip‚ as we like to say on this show‚ the truth matters but only if you hear it. PHILIP BUMP‚ THE WASHINGTON POST COLUMNIST: Right. RUHLE: We're going into a general election. How important is it for people to know the truth and understand what's actually happening in our country? BUMP: Yeah‚ I mean‚ it's obviously critically important‚ right? I mean‚ this is why all of us do the work that we do. We want to make sure we understand what's happening in the world and convey it as well as we can to people‚ right? You know‚ I think what's happening in this moment -- there's a lot of conversations. Obviously‚ the economics are bad on all these various things‚ but I think one understated thing -- and then I think we all understand it‚ but others may not -- is the extent to which there exists an alternate reality -- a different universe of media which is telling you a very different story. I wrote about this last year for Nieman Lab for the Nieman School‚ and‚ you know‚ the point that I tried to make there was‚ there is a universe which is very big and very strong saying things that it wants to hear and its base wants to hear. And it's bigger and stronger‚ and there's been so little pushback on it that it makes the fake things they're seeing seem more true because we have all of these more media outlets. And it makes true things that are happening in the outside world -- here and in the The Washington Post and other places -- makes that seem more false‚ right‚ because we've so long let this sort of exist and not challenged it‚ we end up in the scenario where they don't view what we're doing as valuable because they have Fox News and they have Breitbart who's telling them the real thing. John Fetterman‚ who supports Israel‚ responds perfectly to pro-Palestinian protesters chanting outside his home

Israel-supporting Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pennsylvania) came up with a perfect response to pro-Palestinian protesters who showed up outside his home late last week and chanted that he supports "genocide.""Fetterman‚ Fetterman‚ you can't hide! You're supporting genocide!" the left-wing crowd hollered. But the freshman senator had the ideal rejoinder under his sleeve‚ getting on the roof of his abode and holding up a huge blue-and-white Israeli flag which wafted in the wind high above the angry throng. — (@) According to the Daily Mail‚ the protest took place outside his residence in Braddock‚ which is near Pittsburgh. While the brick structure in the video may not look like your garden-variety home‚ Fetterman's website indicates that he‚ his wife‚ and their three children live in a restored car dealership in Braddock. The scene was reminiscent of another headline-grabbing moment in November when Fetterman trolled anti-Israel protesters being handcuffed at the U.S. Capitol simply by walking past them while waving a miniature Israeli flag. How are folks reacting? It appears many commenters under the X post above are either Democrats or pro-Palestinian or both‚ and they weren't happy:"We must thoroughly study this heel turn to make sure we see the signs in the next popular 'progressive‚'" one commenter wrote."What an embarrassment to my home state‚" another user said."So Fetterman is a foreign agent serving a foreign country. Got it. US politicians should never wave a foreign flag. This guy should be removed from office‚" another commenter said.Although‚ at least one responder seemed into it: "Stop making me like John Fetterman."Anything else?Fetterman of late has been behaving in a number of eye-opening‚ non-woke ways:Earlier this month‚ he blasted the hypocrisy of South Africa going to international court against Israel for the Jewish nation's "genocide" against Palestinians in Gaza.In December‚ Fetterman declared he's "not a progressive‚" reportedly called the gigantic number of border crossings "astonishing‚" and said that such concerns aren't xenophobic — and repeated his belief that Democratic New Jersey lawmaker Bob Menendez should be expelled from the U.S. Senate. In October‚ Fetterman called out lawmakers from his own party who jumped the gun to blame Israel for a Gaza hospital bombing when it was soon revealed Hamas was behind the deadly act. That same month‚ Fetterman also announced he would highlight the identities of those Hamas abducted: "My office will display every last one of the innocent Israelis kidnapped by Hamas until they are safely returned home. We won't stop sharing their stories until then."Fetterman also said in October‚ "Now is not the time to talk about a ceasefire. We must support Israel in efforts to eliminate the Hamas terrorists who slaughtered innocent men‚ women‚ and children. Hamas does not want peace‚ they want to destroy Israel. We can talk about a ceasefire after Hamas is neutralized."Like Blaze News? Bypass the censors‚ sign up for our newsletters‚ and get stories like this direct to your inbox. Sign up here!

Texas woman who allegedly stole $103 million from Army got to retire with full benefits

A 57-year-old San Antonio woman allegedly stole over $103 million from from the U.S. Army by regularly drawing funds via a fake children's development entity that she controlled. Janet Yamanaka Mello reportedly blew the funds on herself‚ buying 80 high-end vehicles‚ 100 head of cattle‚ 31 homes‚ and various luxury items. Although Mello was indicted last month and slapped with 10 charges related to the alleged fraud scheme‚ she was permitted to retire with full benefits from the Army. The con Mello‚ a native of Guam‚ worked as a civilian Army employee at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston where she supposedly helped administer the 4-H initiative via the Army's Child and Youth Services Division‚ according to court documents. Sidelong to her work for the Army‚ she created a shell company called Child Health and Youth Lifelong Development in 2016. She included CHYLD in her 2017 personal tax forms‚ indicating she earned a profit of $483 on a revenue of $2‚152 for training consultations‚ reported the San Antonio Express-News. Court documents indicate that Mello "used her knowledge of funding procedures and her ability to approve the distribution of funds to various entities to direct funds from CYS program fund accounts to be paid to CHYLD‚ an entity MELLO formed and controlled. Without disclosing the fact that she owned and controlled CHYLD‚ MELLO approved the payment of government funds to CHYLD." The Defense Finance and Accounting Service reportedly sent over 40 payments to Mello's outfit over the course of the alleged scam. Mello allegedly spread the ill-gotten gains through various bank accounts she controlled‚ failing to report any of this income on her tax returns for tax years 2017 through 2022. While Mello claimed that CHYLD provided 4-H services to military personnel and their families‚ the Department of Justice indicated the company did not provide any services. Instead‚ Mello has been accused of using over $103 million on "high-end retail goods‚ jewelry‚ luxury automobiles‚ air travel‚ and high-end real estate throughout the country." ArmyTimes reported that Mello's purchases included a roughly $3.1 million‚ eight-bedroom‚ 55-car garage 58-acre estate in Maryland as well as a $1.1 million home in San Antonio. Mello allegedly managed to buy a fleet of vehicles‚ including a 1967 Chevrolet Camaro SS‚ a '66 Chevrolet Chevelle SS‚ a '66 Ford Mustang‚ a '54 Chevrolet Corvette‚ a 1935 Plymouth Sedan‚ and various cars that usually run upward of $100‚000 to $200‚000. Extra to cars and mansions‚ Mello allegedly bought various luxury condos‚ spent $24.3 million on "retail‚" took trips around the globe‚ and purchased 100 head of cattle. Caught The Express-News indicated that upon noticing a discrepancy between Mello's multimillionaire lifestyle and what would otherwise be affordable on her under $130‚000 annual salary‚ the IRS began digging. The agency soon launched a criminal probe in concert with Army investigators‚ resulting in her December indictment. Mello was arrested in December and charged with five counts of mail fraud‚ four counts of engaging in a monetary transaction over $10‚000 using criminally derived proceeds‚ and one count of aggravated identity theft‚ according to the DOJ. Mello was charged with identity theft because Mello allegedly forged her supervisor's digital signature‚ reported the Express-News. She also appears to have invented a "financial analyst/reimbursable coordinator" named Kathy Johnson to lend greater credibility to the alleged fraud scheme. The alleged con-woman faces a maximum of 20 years in prison for each fraud charge‚ up to 10 years in prison for each spending statute charge‚ and a mandatory minimum of two years in prison for the identity theft charge. Cushy retirement‚ notwithstanding Despite allegedly ripping off the Army and squandering taxpayer money for her own amusement‚ Mello was allowed to retire with full benefits. A spokeswoman for the Army's Installation Management Command told the Express-News that Mello was permitted to retire during the investigation into her alleged fraud scheme. "The command has no authority to impact Ms. Mello's retirement‚" said the spokeswoman. "In accordance with 5 U.S. Code Section 8312‚ an individual may be denied an annuity or retired pay on the basis of the service of the individual‚ if the individual is convicted of treason‚ rebellion or insurrection‚ or other similar offenses. There is no similar statutory authority for denying retired pay based on a conviction of other offenses." Albert Flores defended Mello's decision to retire and collect additional benefits from the taxpayer‚ claiming‚ "She earned it." "I don't see how one thing is related to the other‚" added Flores. Although Mello pleaded not guilty in December‚ her lawyer indicated Mello has blown and or possessed the stolen assets. "We expect a large portion of the assets will be recovered‚" said Flores. "In other words‚ a lot of the money was spent on tangible assets that the government can (recoup) — real estate‚ cash‚ vehicles‚ properties‚ things of that nature. We're being very cooperative in anything we can to turn that over." The DOJ is now working to seize 31 parcels of land Mello acquired in various states along with cash and 78 personal cars‚ trucks‚ and motorcycles. The U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas reportedly is awaiting a decision on whether the alleged fraudster will strike a plea deal or go to trial. Like Blaze News? KJP goes viral for all the wrong reasons after calling fallen soldiers 'military folks' in barely coherent interview

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre went viral on Monday for all of the wrong reasons.Over the weekend‚ three American servicemen were killed and more than 40 others were injured in a drone attack. They were stationed at a U.S. outpost in northeast Jordan. The U.S. government said Iran-supported militants were responsible for the attack.During an interview on MSNBC‚ Jean-Pierre spoke about the fallen soldiers — but appeared nearly unable to piece together a coherent statement. What I will say‚ our deepest‚ uh‚ obviously‚ our deepest condolences go out and our heartfelt condolences go out to the families‚ uh‚ who lost‚ uh‚ three‚ three brave‚ uh‚ three brave‚ uh‚ three brave — three folks who are military folks who are brave‚ who are always fighting‚ who are fighting on behalf of this administration‚ of the American people‚ obviously‚ more so‚ more importantly. Uh‚ we lost those souls as the president said yesterday when he was in South Carolina. Our hearts go out to their families and friends. And let's not forget: there are wounded‚ also wounded soldier‚ military forces as well‚ and our hearts go out to them‚ and so I want to make sure that we offer up those deep‚ uh‚ deep thoughtful condolences to them. — (@) The interview drew sharp rebuke‚ not only for being a rambling mess‚ but because Jean-Pierre described fallen soldiers as "military folks" who fought for the Biden administration. "Our service members swear an oath to defend the Constitution of the United States. They are not fighting 'on behalf of' the Biden team. This is incredibly disrespectful‚" Rep. Pat Fallon (R-Texas) responded."Now we know why they keep rolling out Kirby‚" Rep. Mike Waltz (R-Fla.) said."Note to the Press Secretary @PressSec: These are not 'folks'. They are service members who gave their lives NOT for this administration‚ but for the Country they serve! They are our best and deserve better than this‚" former Rep. Doug Collins (R)‚ who is an Air Force colonel‚ said."We don't fight for any administration @PressSec‚ only the Constitution‚ which yours doesn't even follow dip****‚" retired Air Force Col. Rob Maness said."Folks‚ this is what she's like during every single White House press briefing. She frequently gets tenses wrong‚ makes things plural or singular when they shouldn't be‚ and uses wrong words. It's impressive how bad she is‚" journalist Curtis Houck said."It truly is amazing to see that after almost two years on the job [how] it's possible that Karine Jean-Pierre is only get[ting] worse at her job..." media reporter Joe Concha reacted."KJP confirms everyone’s greatest fears about this administration: that it’s run by stupid‚ incompetent people with no patriotism and no grasp at all of any problem our nation is facing‚" Allie Beth Stuckey noted.President Joe Biden has vowed to respond to the attack‚ but top U.S. officials say the U.S. will not go to war with Iran.Like Blaze News?
