Born in 1928, Nonna and her family were forced to flee to the mountains in northern Italy in order to escape the Nazi’s during WWII. Her hometown, Viareggio, was bombed. Nonna was only a 14-year-old girl at the time. Thankfully, once the war ended, Nonna was able to return home. Eventually, she fell in love with an American Italian. They wrote love letters back and forth before she moved all the way to the States to marry him. Needless to say, Nonna is so proud of her Italian heritage. The Buffalo Zoo places items inside each exhibit to act as enrichment toys. These objects allow the animals to stay active. Some of them provide entertainment for zoo patrons.
