Trump Administration Ramps Up Pressure on California's Education System

With the current Supreme Court term winding down there remain several big opinions on the docket, including on whether district courts will continue to be able to issue national injunctions. One of those opinions came down today, allowing states to ban Medicaid funding for Planned Parenthood. No legacy network newscast filed a full report on the defund of Planned Parenthood, which contrasts to the wall-to-wall coverage drawn by the Dobbs opinion that ended Roe v. Wade. NBC had the lengthiest brief, nonetheless, making the most of its time and going heavy on ideology: NBC NIGHTLY NEWS 6/26/25 6:38 PM TOM LLAMAS: Also tonight, the Supreme Court making it easier for states to target funding for Planned Parenthood. The court ruling along ideological lines today, a 6-3 decision in favor of South Carolina's effort to defund the organization. The conservative majority blocking Planned Parenthood from suing over Medicaid funding. It could pave the way for other states to try to defund as well. Tom Llamas made sure to squeeze “ideological” and “conservative” into the brief, ensuring that the report was, well…ideological. The emphasis on ideology rendered the report vague as to what services were being defunded (Medicaid funding for abortion, Planned Parenthood’s bread and butter, is banned separately from this ruling pursuant to the Hyde Amendment).  Over at ABC, anchor David Muir went for one superlative and specified the services being defunded, although vaguely: ABC WORLD NEWS TONIGHT 6/26/25 6:44 PM DAVID MUIR: We turn now to the Supreme Court decision today, boosting efforts to defund Planned Parenthood. The conservative majority ruling that South Carolina can block the women's health clinics from Medicaid, cutting off funding even for nonabortion services, including contraception and cancer screenings. Other states could now do the same. Even nonabortion services! Contraception and cancer screenings! To his credit, Muir only dropped one “today”. There is no ambiguity, but there is an omission. CBS did nothing on the broadcast side, but did stream an item on the Evening News Plus. A conscious choice was made to focus on the end of term, and to their credit, they mentioned Planned Parenthood is an abortion provider. CBS EVENING NEWS PLUS 6/26/25 7:01 PM MAURICE DuBOIS: The Supreme Court today cleared the way for states to block Medicaid funding for non-abortion related medical services provided by Planned Parenthood. The 6-3 ruling bolsters Republican efforts to defund the nation's largest abortion provider. Additional major rulings are expected tomorrow when the Court's term ends, including President Trump's bid to limit birthright citizenship. What was missing from all these reports was the full scope of services provided by Planned Parenthood and now officially defunded in South Carolina. Lest anyone think that cancer screenings and passing out contraception was Planned Parenthood’s post-Roe business plan: Planned Parenthood is proud to provide a safe and welcoming place to get gender-affirming care. We offer services to transgender women, transgender men, and nonbinary people. Services include: Estrogen and anti-androgen hormone therapy Testosterone hormone therapy Puberty blockers Surgery referrals Transition support (social, legal) Other  “Gender affirming therapy” in all its forms is the real game, which is why the network newscasts played it so brief. A full report would’ve allowed sufficient time to include Planned Parenthood’s gender component, which is the real non-abortion cash cow. Thanks to the Supreme Court, these programs will no longer be publicly financed. Not today, Molech!
