Federal authorities thwarted what the Department of Justice described as a “massive and horrific” terror plot involving a pro-Palestinian, far-left group planning a series of bombings in California beginning on New Year’s Eve. Attorney General Pam Bondi said the FBI and the Department of Justice disrupted the scheme by four alleged members of the “Turtle Island Liberation Front,” which officials describe as anti-government and anti-capitalist. Audrey Illeene Carroll, Zachary Aaron Page, Dante Gaffield and Tina Lai were arrested around December 12 in Lucerne Valley, California, where investigators believe they were preparing to test explosive devices ahead of the planned attacks. Each has been charged with conspiracy and possession of a destructive device. According to Bondi, those arrested planned to attack targets in Orange County and Los Angeles, including Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents and vehicles. According to an affidavit obtained by The Daily Wire, Carroll gave an eight-page handwritten document titled “Operation Midnight Sun” that detailed the bombing plot to a law enforcement source. The plan included planting backpacks with pipe-bomb improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and simultaneously detonating them at five locations including at two American companies at midnight on New Year’s Eve. The plans included information about how to manufacture the bombs and guidance to avoid leaving behind evidence. The suspects took multiple steps to carry out their plot, including acquiring bomb-making materials and traveling to a remote location in the Mojave Desert to construct and detonate a test explosive on December 12. While there, they began assembling devices using materials such as precursors, PVC pipes, and fuses before being arrested,  according to the affidavit. “This was an incredible effort by our U.S. Attorneys’ Offices and the @FBI to ensure Americans can live in peace,” Bondi said. “We will continue to pursue these terror groups and bring them to justice.” “Turtle Island” is an indigenous term for North America adopted by radical leftists who reject the continent’s name as colonialist. An Instagram account for the Turtle Island Liberation Front in Los Angeles, which authorities say is operated by Carroll, shows a woman named Mary, masked with a keffiyeh explaining the ties between  “Palestine is the true name of Israel…It’s the same with Turtle Island. That was what the original tribes on the Americas–before it was called “America”—it was known as Turtle Island because believe it or not if you look at the map rather from the top down but the bottom up, if you flip that map of the Americas it looks like a turtle.” Mary added that her group is looking for “reparations and land back to indigenous groups.” Other posts on the account include anti-Israel and anti-government slogans like “resistance is the deepest form of love,” “capitalism prevents liberation,” “death to ICE,” and “death to America.”

The two Bondi Beach killers, father and son Naveed and Sajid Akram, had ties to the Islamic State terrorist group. Naveed, 24, was previously investigated by ASIO six years ago for connections to a Sydney-based Islamic State cell. Two IS flags were found in their car at Bondi Beach, according to senior officials.” Naveed Akram is currently in the hospital; his father died in an exchange of gunfire during the massacre. ASIO director-general Mike Burgess, who has served since 2019, has repeatedly emphasized that the agency focuses on violent intent rather than ideology or religion. In 2021, Burgess said that terms such as “Islamic extremism” were not fit to use, saying the labels could stigmatize Muslim communities. “It’s violence that is relevant to our powers, but that’s not always clear when we use the term ‘Islamic extremism,’” he stated. “Understandably, some Muslim groups, and others, see this term as damaging and misrepresentative of Islam, and consider that it stigmatizes them by encouraging stereotyping and stoking division.”
