Yeah, let’s start with the bad news (doesn’t that just feel like the way of things?). HBO Max quietly raised their monthly prices yesterday across all available plans. The HBO Max with Ads plan goes from $9.99 to $10.99, the Standard plan from $16.99 to $18.49, and the Premium plan from $20.99 to $22.99. Those new prices go into effect starting on November 20 (relative to your billing cycle), though yearly subscribers will not see the price increase until their annual subscription fee is due. Yay streaming services! We love streaming services! At least the arrival of Weapons offers some consolation. Weapons will officially be available to stream via HBO Max starting on October 24 and will start airing on HBO the next day at 8:00 p.m. ET. The movie is also available to rent and buy via VOD services. Expectations were high for Weapons following the success of Cregger’s previous horror movie (2022’s Barbarian), and it feels safe to say that it exceeded most of them. Narratively, the story of a group of children who mysteriously run away from their homes in unison early one morning is as shocking as the equally twisty Barbarian. Thematically, Weapons uses its chapter-based structure to examine the ways we do (and very much do not) deal with such tragedies in a country that is quickly becoming defined by them. Weapons wasn’t just a critical darling, though. The film shocked most industry analysts by earning over $260 million at the box office on the strength of its director’s previous work and some incredible word of mouth. Speaking of word of mouth, there is even some loose talk that Weapons could be an awards season player, especially as it concerns actress Amy Madigan’s immediately iconic turn as Aunt Gladys. Of course, Weapons will have to contend with Sinners: the other “Can you believe how great this is?” horror hit of 2025 that is also currently streaming on HBO Max. Awards and box office aside, Weapons really is an incredible swing that rightfully remains in the conversation roughly two months after its theatrical debut.
