DeSantis Urges Congress to Defund Sanctuary States That License Illegal Aliens as Drivers

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is calling on Congress to defund sanctuary states that provide illegal immigrants with driver’s licenses. DeSantis’ push comes after an illegal alien, Harjinder Singh, was charged with three counts of vehicular homicide after he appears to have tried to make an illegal U-turn while driving a commercial tractor-trailer on Aug. 12 on the Florida Turnpike that resulted in a crash that killed three people. According to federal marshals, Singh flew to California the day after the fatal crash, where he was eventually detained in Stockton. They stated that Singh had been in the country illegally since 2018 and had obtained a commercial driver’s license in California.  “And that should have never happened. He should have never been here. He certainly shouldn’t have gotten a commercial driver’s license from California,” DeSantis said at a news conference on Tuesday.  The Florida Republican governor has taken a leading role in cooperating with the Trump administration’s illegal alien deportation policies, touring a new detention facility nicknamed Alligator Alcatraz with the president.  DeSantis contended that Congress needed to take action to stop California and other states from issuing driver’s licenses to people who have not been given legal permission to be in the country. “But what it shows is, it can’t just be, like, we do things right in Florida, and somehow that’s going to cure what’s happening on the Left Coast and some of these other places. Ultimately, Congress has the power of the purse. They do not need to fund you if you’re a sanctuary state. They can remove funding from sanctuary cities, so stop subsidizing this.” DeSantis opined at the apparent lack of much in the way of an emotional reaction from Singh on released footage from the crash.  “And you know, it’s disturbing, too, because if you look, we have video of this, we have photos of this, and … it was almost like, you know, he’s walking down the sidewalk, maybe stubbed his toe … like, it didn’t register to him,” DeSantis explained, adding, “and I’m like, that is really, really cold.” DeSantis also drew the dichotomy between what Florida is doing compared with California. Nineteen states, including California, and the District of Columbia allow illegal aliens to obtain driver’s licenses. Licenses in California granted to illegal alien residents should say “federal limits apply,” which would prohibit the individuals from boarding a plane or entering a secure federal building using that ID.  “What we’ve said is, we’re not giving licenses if you’re here illegally. We’re not giving ID cards,” the Florida governor explained. Those living in Florida currently must prove that they are in the country legally in order to get a driver’s license. The state also does not recognize as valid some types of driver’s licenses from several blue states because of a law DeSantis signed that took effect in 2023.   “They invite people to come illegally. They provide benefits. They provide a lot of different things. I mean, honestly, some of them get treated better than blue-collar Americans out there with their policies,” DeSantis said. Capehart Gushes Over Newsom's Social Media Trump Impressions

Over the past several days, California Gov. Gavin Newsom has started posting on his social media accounts in a way intended to mimic President Trump, and on Friday’s PBS News Hour, MSNBC host Jonathan Capehart was all for it. Moderator Geoff Bennett claimed that nobody appears to be more aware than Newsom of Trump’s ability to shape the news cycle, “And it appears that no one is more aware of that in the current moment than California Governor Gavin Newsom, who is trying to beat Trump at his own game, at least online. He's mimicking his style. He's echoing his rants. He's trolling him on social media. Is it going to work?”     Capehart began, “I think it's going to — it is working, I think, simply because this is not new for Governor Newsom. Governor Newsom has been the one Democratic governor who has gone on Fox News and has gone toe-to-toe with Fox World, has gone toe-to-toe with Governor DeSantis in Florida. He has shown he is not afraid to do battle with these folks.” The entire point of Newsom’s exercise is to try to portray Trump and his supporters as hypocrites, and Capehart thought that was brilliant, “And I saw a press conference he did where a couple — some reporter asked him, well, why are you doing this? Is this unseemly something like that? And he's — why are you mimicking the president? And his answer was basically, you should be — I'm just copying him. If you have a problem with what I'm doing, perhaps you should change your focus and talk to him about why he's doing the things that he's doing.” Whether you love, hate, or are indifferent towards Trump’s unique style of social media posts, it is hard to deny they authentically reflect who he is. When Newsom does it, it comes across as just another phony act of a politician trying too hard to be seen as relatable or give a sugar high to liberals who want “a fighter.” Nevertheless, Capehart wanted that sugar high, “I applaud Governor Newsom for what he's doing, not just because he is taking the fight directly to the president, but he is giving voice to a big frustration among Democrats, that why aren't Democrats fighting back against this president? And you have got a governor who's actually doing it.” National Review’s Ramesh Ponnuru would go on to argue that Newsom is just appealing to 2028 primary voters and these posts won’t help Democrats win general elections. That is surely correct. Swing voters in swing states have more pressing concerns than whether or not the governor of California is fighting with Fox’s Dana Perino on X. Here is a transcript for the August 22 show: PBS News Hour 8/22/2025 7:51 PM ET GEOFF BENNETT: And it appears that no one is more aware of that in the current moment than California Governor Gavin Newsom, who is trying to beat Trump at his own game, at least online. Paint fades, prayer endures in the NFL

Last Tuesday evening, my wife and I settled in for our annual fall ritual: the premiere of “Hard Knocks.” Some couples watch sitcoms. We bond over football. When Liev Schreiber’s voice kicks in, summer is slipping away, and the beer fridge is filling up.We’ve watched for years, but this season felt different. The cameras didn’t linger on helmets crashing or coaches barking. Instead, they caught quieter moments: a player brushing off sweat, another flipping open a devotional. The message wasn’t painted in the end zone. It was lived out on the field.End-zone paint doesn’t move people. Faith lived out in the open does. That stands in sharp contrast to the NFL’s other big announcement: the return of slogans painted in end zones — “End Racism,” “It Takes All of Us,” and other socially conscious slogans. The league insists they matter. The results? Unclear. A stenciled phrase doesn’t change lives. A lived-out faith does.Consider New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields. He recently admitted, “I’m low-key addicted to getting in my Bible.” He credits that daily habit for keeping him grounded when the noise grows loud.In Houston, Coach DeMeco Ryans has helped make Bible studies a regular feature for the Texans. Nearly 40 players, coaches, and staff now attend. Quarterback C.J. Stroud thanks “my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ” during interviews. NBC cut that phrase from a broadcast last season, but it hasn’t stopped him from saying it again.“Hard Knocks” has become the best proof yet. In the first episode, backup cornerback Christian Benford prayed over an injured rookie, his words audible as trainers worked: “Heavenly Father, please give him strength. ... As we’re weak, bless everything we do. ... In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.”HBO aired the prayer uncut. No sound bite, no irony — just a moment of faith in full view of teammates and millions of fans.Episode two showed Damar Hamlin praying, thanking God for “focus, fellowship, brotherhood.” His devotional book sat in his hands, battered and beloved. Its frayed edges testified louder than any press release. It’s impossible not to recall Tim Tebow. A decade ago, he was mocked for praying on the field. “Tebowing” became a late-night punchline. But Tebow’s courage made public faith in football possible. Today, players pray without irony — and with far less ridicule.RELATED: The culture war isn’t a distraction — it’s the main front The league points to its Inspire Change program, which has directed more than $460 million to nonprofits. Good. But the slogans? They’re background noise. As the Babylon Bee joked, “NFL Hoping 3rd Year of ‘End Racism’ Painted in End Zone Will Do the Trick.” The gag works because it highlights the gulf between gestures and genuine transformation. The real transformation is happening elsewhere: in chapels, prayer huddles, and well-worn Bibles. These acts don’t just polish the league’s image. They shape the men who play the game — building character, humility, and unity in a way a slogan never could.Sitting on the couch with my wife, I felt the difference. End-zone paint doesn’t move people. Faith lived out in the open does.Painted slogans fade. Prayer changes hearts. If the NFL wants to inspire change, it should keep showing the moments that can’t be scripted — players living out their faith with quiet acts of devotion, one prayer at a time, and far more enduring than any PR campaign.
