“Absolutely F***ing Terrible” — Post Malone Gets Blasted For Playing “Countrified Versions” Of Old Hits At Coachella
Bringing the country to Coachella.
Post Malone closed out the massive music festival’s first weekend in Indio, California with a headlining set that included a range of hits, and obviously some of his newer country music as well. Post put out his debut country album F-1 Trillion in August, which featured tons of collaborations with other country artists and was overall a pretty decent record I thought.
Considering he was a mega rap and hip hop star before this new venture, it’s not shocking that he got a big slot at one of music’s biggest festivals, but some fans online were NOT happy with his performance, and the fact that he brought his country music (in addition to putting a country spin on some of his older hits) to the main stage.
Typically, the huge headliners at Coachella bring out a pretty elaborate set, and put a lot of work into making the show unlike anything they’ve done before… Post did have a reimagined Forumla 1 racetrack that went from the stage through the crowd, lots of fire and pyro, but compared to others that have headlined in the past, it was pretty simple.
Several times throughout the show, according to Billboard, Post apologized for sounding “pitchy,” saying:
“Auto-tune is a hell of a drug.”
I’m not sure how noticeable that was to fans, or if they were more upset that he did a mostly country set, but his name has been trending on X this morning and most of it is not positive at all. Of course, Coachella rarely, if ever, has country headliners, and while Post is obviously very versatile, I have to imagine many fans there love him for his music from other genres. At the same time, I’m not sure what they expected… obviously he’s going to be playing music from the album he just released last year.
Producers also cut off Megan Thee Stallion’s sound during her set because she went two minutes over, bleeding into his time, though she kept going anyways:

So that also ticked off some fans, but in general, the consensus seemed to be that Post’s fans that like his rap and hip hop don’t want to hear his country music, or his older songs turned into a country-style tune, though considering he’s been “country” for a while now, I would think they’d expect him to deliver that at Coachella.
Here’s some videos of his performance:

From what I can tell in those clips, I think he kept it true to what he did on his first-ever country tour last year, though obviously fans at this festival were expecting something much different…
I loved his live show when I saw Post last year, and if I’m being really honest I’d probably say I prefer his pop and hip hop music too, but I think some of his country songs were really solid and he definitely put in the work to make it true to himself and authentic to the genre. I was kind of waiting for the other shoe to drop, so to speak, in terms of fans starting to turn on him going country and saying they didn’t like it because it’s been mostly positive up until this point, and after this weekend, I think it’s safe to say that’s officially happening.
They really let him have it online… it’s actually one of the first times I’ve ever seen so much negative attention on Post for something like this:
It should have been advertised that Post Malone would do a country set so fans waiting for the old shit (like they remember it) wouldn’t be misled – like this lol pic.twitter.com/MWo6BVUCLx

Post Malone countrifying white Iverson is my 13th reason

i wish post malone would just perform some of his old shit normally, instead of making it country

These countrified versions of Post Malone’s old songs fucking suck.
We get it, you’re a cowboy now but why did you have to touch the old songs? They were PERFECT

Post Malone had to be the worst coachella headliner of all time. pic.twitter.com/YDhnnEopuw

I love Post Malone and most of his music is cool but his Coachella set is absolutely fucking terrible. All sad slow songs and he’s playing all of his old ones with a country twang and no hip hop drums or bass.
— gufter (@donaldlovesamo) April 14, 2025
Post Malone’s Coachella performance is objectively terrible. His backup singers are off key, he’s apologized several times for sounding “pitchy”, and merging his old hits with this country live band shit?? Hot garbage

Bruh Post Malone… this version of congratulations is a borderline war crime
— Century ? (@CenturyOG) April 14, 2025
I love Post Malone so much but man I feel like he should’ve just kept the country and hip-hop songs separate for this Coachella set as opposed to making it all country
— Baeley (@thebaeley) April 14, 2025
Post Malone’s #Coachella2025 performance is so mid… i really need him to drop this “country” era and act it’s boring. not to mention every time he sings one some he says “ladies and gentlemen” 7 times and “thank you” about 20… i love Posty but girl pls!
— ????? ????? (@Glindas__bubble) April 14, 2025
I really like Post Malone, but this set isn’t showcasing him in the best light. Not everyone vibes with turning every song into a country version, and casually drinking and smoking on stage when others colleagues put in so much effort to be at Coachella feels a little off.

Post Malone really out here ruining his hits, this version of Rockstar is atrocious
— h. (@hbuckets2) April 14, 2025
Post Malone is such a talented performer, but man his new country stuff is just such a fall off from his old stuff. I get musicians evolve their sound over time, but this new sound just hits nowhere close to 2016-2019 Posty, and it’s showing in this country-themed Coachella set
— Will Darkey (@WillDarkey) April 14, 2025
I think the real issue here is that Coachella is simply not really the crowd for the country version of Post Malone, and they were probably really caught off guard hearing steel guitar on songs like “White Iverson.” But also, festivals in general tend to be places where you’re “up against the room” so to speak. You have a lot of nominal fans who just want to hear the hits… not a room full of your diehards. It’s also generally not the best place to take some creative chances… remember Eric Church’s Stagecoach set last year?
Post is gearing up to head out on his first-ever stadium tour following the success of F-1 Trillion, so I’m inclined to believe these fans are in the minority… Post puts on a great show, and I’d highly recommend seeing him live in concert. Whether his biggest hits are “countryfied” or not for these concerts, they’re still bangers and it was one of my favorite shows I went to last year.
