Mondays man. — Mostly Peaceful Memes (@MostlyPeacefull) April 21, 2025 Turns out South Park was nearly correct years ago when they did the Kanye West “fish-sticks” joke: south park really turned kanye west into a gay fish pic.twitter.com/ZUHtWs1thn https://t.co/t9sJpwSmlA — sea✰ (@destroynectar) June 16, 2023 Fate sure does love irony, doesn’t it? Of course some people are calling it all just one big publicity stunt since he has a new album out. I guess that could be true, but this seems just a bit over the line to me? But then again I just don’t get Hollywood and I probably never will.

Harvard Sues To Restore Taxpayer Funding Frozen By Trump Admin

Harvard University sued the federal government on Monday over threats to cut taxpayer funding to the school. The lawsuit is the latest escalation in a growing feud between the Trump administration and the university. The government has put increasing pressure on the school over pro-Palestinian and pro-Hamas protests that rocked the campus after the October 7, 2023, terror attack on Israel. Last week, the Trump administration froze $2.2 billion in grants and $60 million in contracts to Harvard. The administration is reportedly considering freezing another $1 billion in funding after the college administrators released a letter of demands from the government that government officials considered private correspondence amid the negotiations. “The consequences of the government’s overreach will be severe and long-lasting,” Harvard President Alan Garber said in an open letter announcing the lawsuit. Garber said the funding cuts would jeopardize the university’s research projects on childhood cancer. “The Government has not – and cannot – identify any rational connection between antisemitism concerns and the medical, scientific, technological, and other research it has frozen that aims to save American lives, foster American success, preserve American security, and maintain America’s position as a global leader in innovation,” the lawsuit says. The Trump administration is leaning on Harvard and other universities, mostly elite Ivy League schools, to reform and restructure their administration over anti-Semitic incidents that have broken out on the campuses in recent years. The government’s Task Force to Combat Anti-Semitism has led the push to crack down on the universities. Harvard, the oldest and wealthiest university in the United States, has made an aggressive push to counter the administration after Columbia University agreed to demands from the government in the hopes of getting its government funding restored. Harvard’s antagonistic stance has frustrated officials in the administration. “Instead of grandstanding, Harvard should focus on rebuilding confidence among all students, particularly Jewish students,” a White House spokesman said in a statement to The Wall Street Journal on Monday. “The White House remains open to dialogue, but serious changes are needed at Harvard.” The Trump administration has threatened to go beyond Harvard’s access to federal funds, warning that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) may strip the university of access to foreign exchange students, as well. DHS has also demanded that the university turn over records on its foreign exchange students accused of “illegal and violent activities.” Treasury Department officials are also reportedly considering revoking the university’s nonprofit status.

Elk win the right of way in Colorado thanks to a rancher’s bold conservation deal

BY THE OPTIMIST DAILY EDITORIAL TEAM If you’re an elk trekking through Park County, Colorado, winter just got a little bit smoother. Thanks to a first-of-its-kind agreement between rancher Dave Gottenborg and two conservation groups, thousands of elk now have safe passage through his 3,000-acre Eagle Rock Ranch. In return, Gottenborg gets a hefty portion of his cattle grazing lease costs covered—without signing away his land in perpetuity. “Ranchers are conservationists in and of themselves,” said Brendan Boepple, conservation director at the Colorado Cattlemen’s Agricultural Land Trust, which helped broker the deal. But traditional conservation easements—permanent legal agreements—aren’t always the best fit. “We’re trying to create new tools for conservation.” And this one has ranchers across the state asking how they can get in on it. Elk-friendly fencing, with less rancher frustration Gottenborg isn’t new to helping wildlife. Every winter, he takes down parts of his barbed wire fence to allow migrating elk to pass through without getting tangled, knowing full well they’ll still trample his grazing grounds and damage fences. “They show up and eat 20 pounds of forage per day, per elk,” he said. Not exactly ideal for a cattleman. But this year, there’s a silver lining. The Property and Environment Research Center (PERC), a conservation-minded think tank, is stepping in to ease the burden. They’re covering more than two-thirds of Gottenborg’s lease costs for five years—as long as the land remains open to elk. When asked why they weren’t paying the full cost of the lease, Gothenburg explained, “We agreed to keep the payment less than 100 percent so it would still be more profitable for third-party landowners to keep agricultural grazing usage”. If PERC footed the full bill, landowners might ditch cattle entirely and lease to elk instead—a situation Gottenborg says would “devastate” ranchers. Conservation economics with a twist PERC isn’t your average conservation organization. Founded by economists during the Cold War, the group began with a question: if markets can deliver food and cars, why not environmental quality? The answer lies in the incentives. From resolving water disputes by matching buyers and sellers of water rights to advocating for smarter national park fee models, PERC pushes for market-based solutions to environmental challenges. They’ve even explored using AI to count elk and calculate “rent” based on their presence. PERC’s conservation director, Travis Brammer, emphasized that the group’s goal is not to commodify wildlife but to “incentivize conservation.” That means new tools—not the “same old playbook” of the last 50 years. Keeping the elk moving, not camping There’s no elk baiting going on here. Gottenborg gives them no salt licks or mineral supplements to linger. “The idea is to keep them moving, but of course, they can stop if they want,” he said. The Colorado Cattlemen’s Agricultural Land Trust will monitor compliance using trail cameras, drones, and site visits, ensuring Gottenborg sticks to the agreed pasture rotations. Boepple noted the public benefits, too: as elk migrate through Eagle Rock Ranch, they’ll be visible in public wildlife areas like the nearby Collard Ranch, offering opportunities for wildlife viewing and hunting. Addressing hunter concerns Gottenborg anticipates some raised eyebrows—especially from hunters worried he’s setting up a private outfitting business or turning the place into an elk refuge. To that, he offers a firm rebuttal: “No, no and NO. I’m not a hunter, although I’m not opposed to hunting.” He added, “Hunters will likely say, ‘the elk belong to the people of Colorado, and we should have the right to shoot them.’ Yes, they are right. But the rancher’s retort is, ‘then why don’t you come around and feed them once in a while in the winter?’” The beginning of a new migration model This isn’t a one-off. Other Colorado ranchers are already asking the Colorado Cattlemen’s Agricultural Land Trust how they can replicate the model. With elk and other migratory species often relying on a patchwork of public and private lands, this kind of incentive-based deal could change the game. “It’s business as usual for the elk,” Boepple said, “but a new way forward for how we think about conservation partnerships.”The post Elk win the right of way in Colorado thanks to a rancher’s bold conservation deal first appeared on The Optimist Daily: Making Solutions the News.

This plant-based leather alternative is plastic-free and ready to scale

BY THE OPTIMIST DAILY EDITORIAL TEAM In a breakthrough for sustainable materials, Australian startup Alt. Leather has unveiled a fully plant-based leather alternative that contains no plastics and is made entirely from natural fibers and agricultural waste. The innovative material promises a circular, animal-free substitute to traditional leather, with applications across fashion, footwear, upholstery, and automotive industries. “Ten percent of our ingredients are upcycled from textiles and cellulose destined for landfill or incineration. One hundred percent of our ingredients are derived from regenerative plants available in abundance globally,” the company states. The material is currently undergoing testing for recyclability and biodegradability, designed with end-of-life in mind. Backed by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), Alt. Leather has worked closely with material scientists to ensure its performance meets global ISO standards for strength, flexibility, color fastness, and abrasion resistance. Closing the loop on leather production Traditional leather comes with high environmental costs, from water-intensive animal agriculture to the chemicals used in tanning. Synthetic leathers, though animal-free, typically rely on petroleum-based plastics. Alt. Leather is aiming to offer a third way: a durable material made from plant starches, cellulose, and natural fibers without a trace of synthetic polymers. “Every ingredient we choose is carefully considered to ensure that we are tapping into regenerative and abundant resources globally,” the company explains. “Polysaccharides like cellulose and starches, recycled and natural fibres, and plant-derived resins are all part of our solution.” To get there, the team screened thousands of combinations of plant-based ingredients before arriving at their proprietary formula. The result: a sustainable leather alternative that is strong enough for daily wear but designed for circularity. Scaling with science and support Founder Tina Funder recognized a gap in the market for truly sustainable leather alternatives. But turning an idea into a scalable product required tools beyond what the small team had access to. That’s when they turned to CSIRO. “Tina saw an opportunity to tap into Australia’s abundance of regenerative plants and leading research facilities to transform the leather industry,” CSIRO said in a press release. Working with CSIRO’s Kick-Start program, Alt. Leather began testing its formulations using small-scale extruders—machines that shape material through molds. Success at that level led to trials on larger machines to assess production scalability. “The structured approach of Kick-Start allowed us to test our material in a real-world setting and confirm that it could be scaled up,” said Funder. Participation in the India Australia RISE Accelerator and the Circular Economy cohort gave the company access to manufacturing hubs in Chennai and Noida, where their materials were turned into handbags and footwear. They also received mentorship from experts across India and Australia, further refining their supply chain strategy. What’s next for Alt. Leather Alt. Leather is now focused on further improving the performance and composition of its material and is seeking collaborations with international and Australian brands committed to lowering their environmental footprint. “We’ve learned how to navigate international supply chains and manufacturing landscapes, positioning us well for global expansion,” Funder added. With growing pressure on industries to reduce environmental harm, Alt. Leather’s plant-based innovation could become a pivotal solution in the shift toward circular, sustainable materials. The post This plant-based leather alternative is plastic-free and ready to scale first appeared on The Optimist Daily: Making Solutions the News.
