California Nearly Freed A Twice-Deported Illegal Alien Drunk Driver — Now Newsom Is Backtracking

A twice-deported illegal alien who killed a young couple in a drunk driving accident was set to be let out of a California prison more than six years early. Oscar Eduardo Ortega-Anguiano, a Mexican national, was charged with manslaughter and sentenced to ten years in prison after he killed Anya Varfolomeev and Nicholay Osokin in a drunk driving accident in Orange County, California, in November 2021. The young couple was burned alive after Ortega-Anguiano barreled into their vehicle while high, drunk, and driving nearly 100 miles per hour. The family was notified by the state that the illegal alien was set to be released from prison after serving just over one-third of his ten-year sentence. Anya Varfolomeev’s father decried the planned early release of the illegal alien. “It’s disgusting. You have two young, unbelievable future, productive American citizens killed for nothing and that illegal immigrant who already has been deported twice is going to be released again? For what?” Anatoly Varfolomeev said. “If even he is deported, he will come back.” Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has placed an immigration detainer on the illegal alien, and after public backlash, Governor Gavin Newsom’s press office has announced that the state will be honoring the request. “After being deported in 2013, this individual unlawfully re-entered the US & committed heinous crimes,” the governor’s press office said in a post on X. “CDCR will again coordinate with ICE — as they have w/ 10,000+ inmates — to transfer him before release.” Ortega-Anguiano will face new federal charges from the Department of Justice (DOJ) for illegally reentering the United States after having previously been deported. “My office has filed a felony immigration charge against this defendant. He faces up to 20 years in federal prison if convicted for 8 USC 1326,” Bill Essayli, the U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California wrote on X. “If the State of California will not seek the full measure of justice against this individual, the [Department of Justice] will.” My office has filed a felony immigration charge against this defendant. He faces up to 20 years in federal prison if convicted for 8 USC 1326. If the State of California will not seek the full measure of justice against this individual, the @TheJusticeDept will. https://t.co/wTuQdun1as — US Attorney Essayli (@USAttyEssayli) April 23, 2025 “This is absolutely unconscionable. What about Justice for these teens? What about the rights of their parents?” Attorney General Pam Bondi said on X, adding that the DOJ “will work with ICE to make sure this illegal alien receives full punishment for his crimes.”

Secretary McMahon Restores Accountability on Defaulted Student Loans Biden Ignored

Secretary McMahon Restores Accountability on Defaulted Student Loans Biden Ignored

As part of her efforts to overhaul the federal education system, Education Secretary Linda McMahon is restoring accountability to the federal student loan system. Beginning May 5, the Department of Education will resume involuntary collections on defaulted federal student loans, ensuring that borrowers honor their commitments and taxpayers aren’t left footing the bill.   Since March 2020, the department has halted collections on defaulted student loans, declaring a pandemic-related pause. As part of the Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2023, borrowers were supposed to resume payments in October 2023. Yet, the Biden administration extended a 12-month “on-ramp” period that lasted until September 2024, shielding delinquent borrowers from collections, wage garnishments, or tax refund offsets, even as many remained in default. Simultaneously, the Biden administration introduced its unlawful and unjust income-driven repayment plan–Saving on a Valuable Education. This plan allowed borrowers to pay next to nothing in monthly payments and see their loans canceled after 10 years, depending on their circumstances. Unsurprisingly, courts quickly intervened, freezing the program and plunging millions of borrowers into administrative forbearance. As a result, no payments were being made on billions of dollars in outstanding loans. Fast-forward to today. The damage has been substantial. Unsurprisingly, the Education Department has announced that the “student loan portfolio is headed towards a fiscal cliff,” and less than 40% of borrowers are actively repaying their student loans. A staggering 5 million borrowers had already defaulted on their loans before the pandemic pause even began. The previous administration’s policies created a dangerous moral hazard, conditioning borrowers to expect taxpayer-funded bailouts while disregarding the promises they made. The department’s course correction couldn’t be more timely. Over the next two weeks, defaulted borrowers will be notified to either make a monthly payment, enroll in an income-driven repayment plan, or sign up for loan rehabilitation. Later this summer, the government will start collecting what is due by withholding money from borrowers’ tax refunds, federal pensions, and even wages if the borrower is unable to make payments. To assist borrowers through this transition, the Education Department has also implemented systems to ensure they don’t feel left in the dark when figuring out what they owe and how to make payments. They have extended the Federal Student Aid office call-center hours to weekends, launched a new AI assistant, and updated the loan simulator so borrowers can identify the best financial strategy moving forward. As much as the Biden administration tried to make student loan debt disappear with the stroke of a pen, the debt never truly goes away. It merely shifts the burden onto American taxpayers, two-thirds of whom either chose not to pursue higher education or already responsibly paid off their loans. The previous administration’s policies ignored this fundamental economic truth. McMahon also recognizes that runaway college tuition is a major driver of the crisis. Tuition has risen at twice the rate of inflation, while many degree-granting programs offer little return in the job market. As she recently wrote in The Wall Street Journal, “Accountability is a two-way street.” A necessary next step would be to rein in federal intervention in the student loan market. The federal government currently originates 90% of all student loans, crowding out private lenders and distorting prices. This easy, unrestricted access to federal student aid has contributed to rising college costs. Reforms like the College Cost Reduction Act, introduced last Congress by Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC), former chair of the House Education and Workforce Committee, would prohibit the adoption of new regulations that increase costs for the student loan program, eliminate the PLUS loan program that allows parents and graduates to borrow up to the cost of attendance, among other things, and encourages a higher education system that promotes affordability, innovation, and better outcomes for students and taxpayers alike. EXCLUSIVE: Trump Executive Order Will Bar Decertifying Colleges Over DEI

FIRST ON THE DAILY SIGNAL—President Donald Trump will sign an executive order Wednesday prohibiting higher education accreditors from acting against colleges over diversity, equity, and inclusion rules, five sources familiar with the directive told The Daily Signal. Ensuring that accreditors don’t force colleges and universities to require unlawful discrimination, such as DEI policies, could protect conservative colleges like Hillsdale, which don’t record students’ races or abide by racial admissions quotas. The Wednesday order will ensure accreditors comply with federal anti-discrimination law like Trump’s Jan. 20 executive order prohibiting DEI practices in federally funded education. It will also create accreditation processes that reduce barriers to streamline programs; instruct accreditors to give more deference to state law; and target credential inflation; and the devaluation of educational or academic credentials over time, an administration confirmed to The Daily Signal. The executive order will fast-track new accreditors, sources familiar say. Trump hinted at a plan to change the accreditation process during his campaign. “I will fire the radical left accreditors that have allowed our colleges to become dominated by Marxist maniacs and lunatics,” Trump said last summer. “We will then accept applications for new accreditors who will impose real standards on colleges once again and once for all.” The medical school accreditation program, the LCME, has pushed DEI in medical schools for years. For instance, the University of Kansas Medical Center School of Medicine requires students to meet “diversity objectives and competencies” through assignments that demand a focus on “social determinants to health.” A source familiar with the signing said the order will get healthcare education institutions back on track. Trump will open the accreditation marketplace to new accreditors and lift the moratorium on the review of new accreditors, sources say. The order will make it easier for universities to switch accreditors, as the Department of Education will automatically approve requests if the agency doesn’t respond within 30 days. The Department of Education will also publish a Dear Colleague Letter to supersede Biden administration’s 2022 letter, which said an institution seeking to change its accrediting agency must submit to the Office of Federal Student Aid “all materials relating to the prior accreditation and materials demonstrating reasonable cause for changing the accrediting agency.”   “This requirement helps prevent an erosion of accrediting agency standards and provides critical protections for students and taxpayers by ensuring that institutions do not switch accrediting agencies simply to evade accountability, avoid open inquiries, or seek approval from an agency with less rigorous or easier-to-meet standards,” the soon-to-be-voided Dear Colleague Letter states.
