Charley Crockett getting in on the “country music star beefing with the United States government” movement? There’s not much out there that Charley Crockett shies away from. Usually, the Texas-born artist says whatever he needs to say through song, but as of late, Crockett has taken that forwardness to social media. Back in August, the “Music City U.S.A.” singer called out other artists – without naming any names – in a rant that consequently sparked a feud with Gavin Adcock. That feud went back and forth for quite some time (it was entertaining, I have to admit), but has simmered down as the year has gone on. In fact, I thought the controversial side of Charley had gone into hibernation as he focused on his The Crooner & The Cowboy Tour with Leon Bridges that wrapped up towards the end of September. I was wrong. Just a few days ago, Crockett fired up the ol’ controversy starter machine Instagram app and shared this message about his feelings towards the Gulf of Mexico being renamed. One of the first things that President Trump did to kick off his second term was to sign an executive order (Executive Order 14172: “Restoring Names That Honor American Greatness”) that renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. Trump signed that into order on January 20 of this year… Charley Crockett gave his two cents on the matter on October 7. Here’s what the country music artist had to say: “I was born on the Gulf Of Mexico. I don’t recognize it by any other name. Any real Texan knows that our Mexican American brothers and sisters hold up our economy in every industry. I’m proud to have been born in the Rio Grande Valley where the population is over 90% Latino. If those boys in Washington D.C. wanna go renaming regions of this country, they can start with New England. That being said, it was fairly common at the time to slap a “new” in front of a territory and name it after another place… New York was initially New Amsterdam, a Dutch settlement. New Bedford, New Haven, New Bern… the list goes on. One more thing… isn’t Gulf Of America technically more inclusive, representing North, South and Central America? Just a thought… But like I mentioned earlier, this call out by Crockett comes while fellow country music artist Zach Bryan has found himself embroiled in controversy for a song that he hasn’t even released yet. On the rare chance that you missed out on that story, Bryan shared a teaser for an anti-law-enforcement song called “Bad News” in which he painted ICE in a bad light and implied they were contributing to the “fading of the red, white and blue.” Zach Bryan put out a message to explain where he was coming from, and to assure fans that the song would hit both sides of the aisle. But not before the Department of Homeland Security and the White House issued messages of their own saying that Zach’s song was distasteful, among other things. Only time will tell if the U.S. Government will respond to Charley Crockett’s latest comments. If they do, the tally of “country music stars ticking off government higher-ups” would reach a total of two. And hey… any publicity is good publicity, right? She attended the game in San Francisco against the Arizona Cardinals a few weeks ago, though Bosa suffered a season-ending injury with a torn ACL and obviously won’t be playing again until next year, so if she was there to see him… yikes. Because growing up, I thought that I would literally be married and have children by the time I was 25. I am 27, and I am not even dating anyone.
