Megan Moroney Gives Her Ex A Taste Of His Own “Medicine” In Honky Tonk Heater From New Album, ‘Cloud 9’
Sometimes a heaping taste of their own medicine is just what the doctor ordered… and Megan Moroney turned that concept into a honky tonk heater.
Just about a week ago, she released her highly-anticipated third studio album Cloud 9, which is off to a hot start as it debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, which is her first #1 debut on that chart, this week.
It’s a huge accomplishments that coincides with Ella Langley finding her way back to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart with “Choosin’ Texas,” marking the first time who female country artists have topped those two charts simultaneously. You absolutely love to see it, and they certainly make country music look good…
On the 15 song-tracklist Cloud 9 has to offer, I’ve been stuck on the two duets, “I Only Miss You” with Ed Sheeran and “Bells & Whistles” with Kacey Musgraves, but over the last several days, I’ve had “Medicine” stuck in my head, which Megan wrote with Connie Harrington, Jessie Jo Dillon, and Jessi Alexander.
The lyrics find her admitting that she is happy to give her ex a taste of his own medicine, after finding out he gave his number to “an L.A. blonde,” responding by saying she “gave your quarterback mine.” To quite lyrics from her song “Wish I Didn’t,” hell hath no fury…
The chorus is even more straightforward, where she asks how bitter it tastes to be the fool in the relationship as the rolls are suddenly reversed in terms of who is being the playboy, or playgirl, in this case:
“I ain’t heard from you in three long days
You won’t hear from me for five
Oh, you gave your number to an L.A. blonde?
Well, I gave your quarterback mine
And you don’t like my short black dress
Well, it’s going out tonight
And if it hits a floor, it won’t be yours this time
Is it bitter going down, down, down?
You don’t like it too much, do you?
Coming back around, round, round
Ain’t as fun when it’s happening to you
Oh, poor, poor you, now, who’s the fool?
Say I’m messing with your head again
Well, how you like the taste of your own medicine?”
I mean, truer words have never been spoken… and as per usual, Megan says this one comes from personal experience, as she’s found that when a guy isn’t treating her right, and she turns around and does the same thing back, they don’t like it too much:
“In my experience, anytime a guy hasn’t treated me well and I’ve gone and treated them anything close to the same way, they really don’t like it.”
She added that she took a risk with some of the lyrics, particularly the line about “crying int he shower,” but she knew her fans would get it:
“There’s a lot of lines in ‘Medicine’ where I’m showing my sense of humor, like when I say, ‘You should try crying in the shower, it’s really great.’
In the past I might’ve overthought things and asked if it was too weird to put that in a song, but now I don’t feel the need to be anything but myself. My fans know me by now, and they’ll totally get it.”
Because there was so much buzz with the previously-released songs, a well as the one fans think is about Riley Green “Who Hurt You?”, I feel like some of the others haven’t gotten the attention they deserve, and at her core as an artist, Megan is an incredible writer and songs like “Medicine” really show that off.
In addition, the production here is easily one of the most country songs on an album that certainly leans into her pop sensibilities in many ways, which makes me love it that much more. It’s fun, twangy, upbeat, and pretty dang vindictive… so I’m here for it. It’s one of those turn your volume all the way up on a sunny day and sing it at the top of your lungs songs, and you should definitely check it out if you haven’t yet:
