iOS 18 beta will bring Apple AI to the iPhone, but I might not install it

I've been running iOS betas on my iPhone ever since Apple started the program, with one exception. iOS 17 wasn't exciting enough to warrant installing it on my iPhone 14 Pro last year. With the iOS 18 beta coming this week, I can't wait to get it going on my iPhone. That's because I can't wait to try Apple's AI features. On Monday, the company will unveil a new "Apple Intelligence" suite of AI tools built into iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS 15, and all its other operating systems at WWDC 2024. If reports are accurate, we're in for a few exciting developments. I expect some of these features to come to the iPhone as soon as the first iOS 18 beta is out. However, some of the AI features Apple built into iOS 18 will require newer hardware than my iPhone 14 Pro. Therefore, there's a chance I won't install the iOS 18 beta this summer. Instead, I might not experience iOS 18 until after I've upgraded to the upcoming iPhone 16 this fall. Continue reading... WWDC 2024 news: All the biggest announcements from Apple

WWDC 2024 news: All the biggest announcements from Apple

WWDC 2024 starts at 10 am ET. After a packed WWDC 2023, there’s a lot we can see during the worldwide developer’s conference, even though rumors say we won’t get any major hardware announcements. That said, here you'll find all the major announcements as Apple unveils them. How to watch WWDC 2024 If you’re planning to watch WWDC 2024 live, you can stream the conference from Apple’s YouTube channel, the Apple TV app, or the company’s website. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RXeOiIDNNek While I usually tune in to the WWDC conference from my Apple TV app on the Apple TV set-top box, the easiest way to watch WWDC 2024 is from the YouTube page, as you can watch it from any device. To watch it from the Apple TV app, open it before the conference starts, and you’ll see a banner for the event banner, which you can click. The same is worth it about watching the keynote from Apple’s website here. WWDC 2024 announcements: What to expect iOS 18: First and foremost, users can look forward to iOS 18. This software update for the iPhone will be all about AI, and there’s even a rumor that Apple is preparing a redesigned Home Screen. iPadOS 18: With the new M2 iPad Air and M4 iPad Pro models now available, we can’t wait to know more about iPadOS 18 during WWDC 2024. Details about upcoming features are unclear, but we could definitely see Freeform updates, Apple Vision Pro integration, and AI functions. watchOS 11: This year marks the tenth anniversary of the first Apple Watch. While we expect great changes with Apple Watch Series 10, Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman says watchOS 11 will be a fairly small update. Still, Apple will likely announce new features. macOS 15: So far, we know that Apple will bring Freeform and AI updates to macOS. As the Apple Silicon transition is completed, Cupertino will likely focus even more on its proprietary chips rather than Intel Macs. tvOS 18: Last year was pretty packed for tvOS 17. We hope that during WWDC 2024, this operating system will keep shining as Apple announces even more home features for its users. visionOS 2: With Apple Vision Pro available for almost two months now, we could definitely see its next operating system update. With several features yet to be revealed, this could be another packed year for spatial computing. AI focus: Apple will likely focus on AI throughout its systems. Several reports talk about in-house technology and partnerships. This will be the most exciting announcement of the day. Wrap up BGR will update this article as WWDC 2024 kicks off and we get all the latest announcements. How to install Apple’s iOS 18 beta on your iPhone

Apple's first iOS 18 developer beta will be available following the WWDC 2024 keynote on Monday, June 10th. Just like last year, Apple will make it easier to download the developer beta profile, as you'll only need to toggle off the previous version and select the new one. Interestingly enough, this change started with iOS 16.4. At the time, the company explained what would change for the beta cycle: Beginning with iOS & iPadOS 16.4 beta, members of the Apple Developer Program will see a new option to enable developer betas directly from Software Update in Settings. This new option will be automatically enabled on devices already enrolled in the program that update to the latest beta release. Your iPhone or iPad must be signed in with the same Apple ID you used to enroll in the Dev Program in order to see this option in Settings. In future iOS and iPadOS releases, this new setting will be the way to enable developer betas, and configuration profiles will no longer grant access. That way, Apple can prevent regular users from installing the first iOS 18 developer beta. Although the test version of previous software updates has been stable, the company always deals with people who downloaded the developer's beta version on their main iPhone and then complain when some apps or features stop working. With that in mind, downloading the first iOS 18 developer beta will be simpler than ever, even though you must be a registered dev. Once it's out, follow the steps below: On your iPhone, open the Settings app Tap on General and Software Update Tap on Beta Updates and enable iOS 18 Developer Beta once it’s available Step by step on how to install iOS 18 first developer beta Image source: José Adorno for BGR Image source: José Adorno for BGR Make sure your added Apple ID is registered as a developer. Then, you can download iOS 18 beta 1, which will prompt on your device’s screen. The same is worth it for the Mac, iPad, Apple TV, and Apple Watch. Note that using a different Apple ID for the beta update won’t impact your iCloud settings. Apple explains: “You can sign in with a different Apple ID enrolled in the Apple Beta Software Program or Apple Developer Program.” In addition, users running any iOS 17 developer beta can tap on Beta Updates and enable the new iOS 18 Developer Beta once it's available. How to uninstall the iOS 18 beta If you want to uninstall the iOS 18 developer beta, you’ll need to erase and restore your iPhone or iPad. With this option, you won’t be able to restore from a backup done on iOS 18 when going back to iOS 17. Fortunately, with iCloud saving a lot of data for most apps, that isn’t as much of a problem as in previous years. Make sure you’re running the latest version of macOS before starting the uninstall iOS 18 beta process. Connect your iPhone or iPad to your Mac or PC. You need to start Recovery Mode.  Press and quickly release the Volume Up button. Press and quickly release the Volume Down button. Then, press and hold the Side button until you see the recovery mode screen.  When the Restore/Update option shows up on your Mac or PC, choose Restore. This will wipe your device and install the latest non-beta version of iOS. Choose Install when you see the prompt that an update is required to restore your iPhone to finish the process.
