Many people may not be familiar with a wind phone. It is a disconnected rotary or push-button telephone people use to talk to deceased loved ones. You may find a wind phone almost anywhere. In 2010, garden designer Itaru Sasaki built a simple booth in his yard. Months later, when the earthquake and tsunami hit Fukushima, and over 20,000 died, people sought closure. Mr. Sasaki permitted neighbors to use the humble booth, and the word didn’t take long to spread. Image from Wikimedia Commons. Grief affects every person differently. There is no “correct” way to grieve the loss of a loved one. What works for one person may not be effective for another. Therapists have long talked about writing a letter to a deceased person to gain closure. Others recommend having a “conversation” with lost family members by speaking to an empty chair. While often effective, these Gestalt methods don’t alleviate everyone’s grief. Mr. Sasaki has been following the increasing popularity of the wind phone. He requests that new booths incorporate four basic principles. The first is to provide a quiet place promoting contemplation. Second, a closed booth to provide privacy. The third is to provide a guardian or caretaker. The guardian’s purpose is to interact with grieving people who need personal connection in addition to the wind phone. Lastly, Mr. Sasaki says that using a wind phone and talking with a guardian should always remain free of any charge. It’s a sad day for baseball fans. Bob Uecker, legendary broadcaster and voice of the Milwaukee Brewers for 54 seasons, passed away at age 90. The team shared the news on Instagram with a touching tribute to a man known for his wit, comedic timing, and classic one-liners. The post called the hometown hero the “heart and soul of Wisconsin.” It continues in part, “Saying goodbye to Bob shakes us all. He was so much more than a Milwaukee Brewers icon. He was a national treasure. Bob entertained us with his words and storytelling, so it is no surprise that his passing now leaves us at a loss for our own words. There is no describing the impact Ueck had on so many, and no words for how much he was loved. I would be utterly terrified each time.Each time I woke up in my bed, every time the next morning, I would find little pinprick-like spots on my body and would be sick in bed for days and be incredibly weak. My mother recalls that I had a strange 'chemical' odor about me. I was too afraid to tell my parents about the experiences as I felt the same thing would happen to them if I did.The doctors guessed that I was weak due to blood loss but could not see any signs or diagnostics of viral or bacterial infections. I am not epileptic and as an adult have been tested for all kinds of disorders. I'm perfectly healthy. I firmly believe I was not abused or violated, other than what I previously described.The abductions ended 15 years ago, I am otherwise a completely rational person, but this is something I've felt for a long time.
