'Mercury Poisoning Is Back': Colbert Freaks Out Over EPA Deregulation

Joe Biden became president in 2021, which was not that long ago, but according to CBS’s Stephen Colbert, repealing Biden-era EPA regulations is a public health crisis of grave consequence. Colbert made the remarks on Thursday’s edition of The Late Show, where he also expressed his lack of interest in the financial cost of regulations. Reaching for the alcohol, Colbert declared, “Trump also, and I want to be fair, is ruining everything. For instance, his EPA, his Environmental Protection Agency, announced plans to repeal dozens of the nation's most significant environmental regulations, including more than two dozen protections against air and water pollution. I mean, just even hearing that stresses me out. I need a drink, man. There you go. Oh, my god. That's water.”   Stephen Colbert freaks out over the EPA getting rid of a bunch of Biden-era rules, "Mercury poisoning is back, baby! Pretty soon your horoscope's gonna read, 'This month, Mercury is in retrograde and also in your brain. Blaaaaaaggahhhaa.'" pic.twitter.com/Tw9dU9j5Ez — Alex Christy (@alexchristy17) March 14, 2025   Moving on, Colbert added, “The EPA is also going to overturn limits on soot from smokestacks and restrictions on emissions of mercury. Mercury poisoning is back, baby! Pretty soon your horoscope's gonna read, ‘This month, Mercury is in retrograde and also in your brain. Blaaaaaaggahhhaa.’" Colbert’s source for this was a New York Times article that included a note that the soot and mercury regulation was a Biden rule, but Colbert made it seem like Trump was turning the clock back to the 1870s. Nevertheless, Colbert rolled on, “The changes also include getting rid of something called the “good neighbor rule,” which requires states to address their own pollution when it's carried by winds into neighboring states. Getting rid of the good neighbor rule is really going to change those commercials. In a State Farm parody, the narrator suggested the moves will kill people, “Like a good neighbor. [Coughing] My lungs! Get out! I'm dying! You lied to me, Jake! State Farm is there!” Colbert followed up, “This new highway to a Mad Max hellscape was announced by EPA administrator and Humpty Dumpty after Ozempic, Lee Zeldin.” The fact that Zeldin cares about how regulations may impact the economy was something Colbert simply could not understand, “Zeldin claims that getting rid of these regulations is in service of the agency's mission, which he said is to quote, ‘Lower the cost of buying a car and running a business.’ No it's not! The mission of the Environmental Protection Agency is to protect the environment, not to sell cheaper cars, that’s the mission— selling cheaper cars is the mission of Lee Zeldin's Used Auto World: Stop in today to buy, zel, or lee-se." The whole reason why Trump and Zeldin are in charge is because liberals like Colbert downplayed the consequences their policies had on costs to everyday voters. Some things never change. Here is a transcript for the March 13 show: CBS The Late Show with Stephen Colbert 3/13/2025 11:43 PM ET STEPHEN COLBERT: Trump also, and I want to be fair, is ruining everything. For instance, his EPA, his Environmental Protection Agency, announced plans to repeal dozens of the nation's most significant environmental regulations, including more than two dozen protections against air and water pollution. I mean, just even hearing that stresses me out. I need a drink, man. There you go. Oh, my god. That's water.  The EPA is also going to overturn limits on soot from smokestacks and restrictions on emissions of mercury. Mercury poisoning is back, baby! Pretty soon your horoscope's gonna read, "This month, Mercury is in retrograde and also in your brain. Blaaaaaaggahhhaa."  Blaaaaaaggahhhaa. Univision FREAKS OUT Over DHS Self-Deportation Ad

Univision FREAKS OUT Over DHS Self-Deportation Ad

A recent report published by The Bulwark illustrates the freakout inside Univision over the decision to air the ad featuring DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, encouraging illegal immigrants to self-deport.  Adrian Carrasquillo writes: EMPLOYEES AT THE SPANISH-LANGUAGE cable mainstay Univision were left distraught earlier this month after the network’s brass decided to run Department of Homeland Security ads warning immigrants that the government will find and deport them. The ads, which are part of a new $200 million campaign Homeland Security unveiled in February, have rankled immigrant-rights groups, who view them as a blunt attempt at fearmongering on the taxpayer dime. The article references Univision’s initial coverage of the ad campaign, which the news division labeled a “controversy” featuring a “radical” ad: Univision covered the DHS self-deportation ads with Kristi Noem as "radical", and a "controversy": pic.twitter.com/fihy2pVxz1 — Jorge Bonilla (@BonillaJL) March 14, 2025 NOTICIERO UNIVISION EDICIÓN DIGITAL 2/18/25 12:03 PM ANDREA LINARES: We continue with this controversy. "If you don't leave, we will find you and deport you", that’s how radical the ad with Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem is, in a controversial TV, radio, and digital ad campaign across several countries.  Linares and co-anchor Borja Voces tossed to D.C. correspondent Edwin Pitti, who didn’t further editorialize about the ad campaign but noted there were “strong reactions” to it. It turns out that the strongest reactions may have come from within Univision’s own newsroom. Carrasquillo’s item goes on to detail the internal debate and hand wringing by Univision staffers over the decision to air the ad, and it all goes back to the 2023 Trump interview and how it was handled. But the caterwauling inside Univision (and, to a lesser extent, Telemundo) confirms what we’ve told you all along: that these networks are part and parcel of the Immigration Industrial Complex. Their long-term survival depends on a continuously broken border and a lack of executive will to enforce it. Here’s former anchor Jorge Ramos, making that very point at a 2015 Harvard Q&A: JORGE RAMOS: I think the future of Spanish-language media is assured for decades, simply, for a very simple reason: Despite of the fact that the majority of the growth within the Hispanic community is coming from people being born here, we still have one to two million immigrants, legally and illegally coming in every single year. Most of them speak Spanish. So, therefore, we have a market that is growing and growing. ... And I think we can assure you that in the next few decades, you'll see Spanish-language media. That's another topic completely, but the Latino community is keeping so many elements from their country of origin, including Spanish- 9 out of 10 Latinos speak Spanish...speak Spanish at home- that- and we're doing things that Italians didn't do, or Russians, or Eastern Europeans didn't do- and the closeness to our countries of origin and the communications that we have are keeping Spanish-language media alive. And thanks to that, it's a new power that other immigrant communities didn't have in the past.  The Biden administration, what with their flinging the border open, turned out to be a boon for Spanish-language news media. But it is time to adapt to the current environment. Univision and Telemundo appear to be doing so, albeit very reluctantly. Click “expand” to view the full transcript of the aforementioned report as aired on Noticiero Univision Edicion Digital on February 18, 2025: ANDREA LINARES: We continue with this controversy. "If you don't leave, we will find you and deport you", that’s how radical the ad with Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem is, in a controversial TV, radio, and digital ad campaign across several countries.  BORJA VOCES: According to the official, this campaign seeks to convince undocumented migrants to leave the United States voluntarily, and (to convince) those outside (the U.S.) not to risk coming because, as you can see, they will face the consequences. Edwin Pitti is live from Washington, D.C. with all the details and, of course, the reactions which have come quickly. Edwin. Good afternoon. Breaking news. EDWIN PITTI: How are you, good afternoon. That’s right- we are talking about a controversial advertisement by the Department of Homeland Security starring DHS Secretary Kristi Noem herself who directly addresses undocumented immigrants: first, by making them a loud and clear invitation to self-deport so that they leave the country voluntarily. And, on the other hand, she reinforces the message with a threat, saying that this government is willing to move forward, searching, finding and massively deporting people who have committed some type of crime, as they have been doing since Day One of President Donald Trump’s second term. In this video that lasts just under a minute, Secretary Noem also thanks Donald Trump for his leadership in how these mass deportations have been carried out. But she also leaves the door open so that those people who leave voluntarily can, in her own words, have the slightest option in the future to legally return to the United States. Secretary Noem says In this video that the only way for a country to be truly strong is for all the people who live within it to respect the laws, and that is why she states that it will be the only way for people to return to the United States- respecting the laws. But those who are caught and deported will not be able to return to American soil. Without a doubt, an advertising campaign that costs millions of dollars- millions of dollars that are of course paid for by taxpayers, and that is why there are many strong reactions. I’m Edwin Pitti, reporting from Washington for your Edición Digital. Back to you. LINARES: Edwin, as always, thank you very much for this report.

What you really need to know about the ‘measles outbreak’

What you really need to know about the ‘measles outbreak’

According to numerous mainstream reports, there’s a measles outbreak in Texas and New Mexico. In five days, the number of cases has risen by 28. One case in West Texas has resulted in the death of a child, while an adult in New Mexico tested positive for measles postmortem. Should we be concerned? Liz Wheeler of “The Liz Wheeler Show” breaks down this “so-called outbreak” and explains why this “coordinated narrative” by the media is happening. Liz reads from a Reuters article documenting the measles outbreak. In just a few lines, it becomes clear where Reuters' motivation lies. “They're not presenting how many people have contracted influenza or how many people, even children, who have died from influenza. They are presenting this story about this small number of measles cases because they don't like RFK Jr.,” she says, adding that it’s clear the outlet's aim is to “[paint] him as a dangerous antivaxxer.” The article’s description of the adult who tested positive for measles is also eyebrow-raising. “Last week, the state reported that an unvaccinated adult who had died tested positive for measles,” Liz reads from the Reuters report. “The way that this is phrased should raise our red flags,” she says. “An unvaccinated adult in Southern Texas is another way of saying that this person is an illegal alien.” “Reuters doesn't mention the immigration status of this individual, and I suspect that that oversight is intentional,” she adds. The other red flag is how the sentence is phrased to insinuate that he died of measles even though it wasn’t discovered he had contracted the virus until after death. Perhaps he died of other causes but also happened to have the measles. “I recall not too many years ago that we were told that a motorcyclist had died from COVID-19 when in fact that motorcyclist died as a result of a motorcycle crash and then in the autopsy also tested positive for COVID-19,” says Liz. “Not exactly the same thing to die with a disease as it is to die from a disease, and yet Reuters does not make that distinction.” But it gets even more suspect. The article, quoting the CDC, went on to say, “The measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine is the most important tool for preventing measles. ... The health departments of both the affected states said 80 patients in Texas and 27 in New Mexico were unvaccinated.” Liz crunches the numbers. “If there are 223 total measles cases in Texas, according to Reuters, and 80 patients in Texas are unvaccinated then ... that means that only 35% of those who contracted measles are unvaccinated” and “65% of those who contracted measles are vaccinated.” Isn’t it interesting how all these people who are telling us “how important the MMR vaccine is” never mention that “two-thirds of the people who got measles in this so-called outbreak in Texas were, in fact, vaccinated.” "This is why people don't trust doctors. ... This is why people turn to individuals like RFK Jr.," who, of course, is the target in this Reuters article and others like it. To hear more about the “outbreak,” watch the clip above. iPhone 16e reportedly has a Bluetooth audio problem that can’t be fixed

iPhone 16e reportedly has a Bluetooth audio problem that can’t be fixed

New iPhone hardware might launch with functionality issues that need to be ironed out via subsequent software updates, assuming software can provide fixes. The same goes for Android products. Hearing that the iPhone 16e has a Bluetooth issue where the audio cuts out briefly while music is playing should not be that surprising. However, the iPhone 16e isn't exactly a new iPhone, is it? It has the same design as every other iPhone with a notch that has been released since the iPhone 12. Apple also recycled many of the internal components to make this device. Even the iPhone 16's A18 chip and the 8GB of RAM inside the iPhone 16e aren't new-new. Therefore, other internal components, including the Bluetooth chip, shouldn't be brand new. The only completely new iPhone 16e components might be the new battery, which gives the handset the best battery life in 6.1-inch iPhones, and the C1 modem. With all that in mind, one shouldn't expect Bluetooth audio connectivity issues with the iPhone 16e. But it turns out that several iPhone 16e owners have encountered Bluetooth disconnects, and Apple doesn't know how to fix them for the time being. It doesn't seem like a hardware issue, so exchanging your iPhone 16e for a new one might not fix it. Some iPhone 16e owners suspect the device has issues handling multiple Bluetooth connections, like an Apple Watch and AirPods. That's actually a nightmare scenario for this longtime iPhone user. I run a lot, and I wear the Apple Watch to track my workouts while AirPods handle the entertainment. As is often the case with issues concerning new devices, affected users took to social media and forums to complain. A discussion on Apple forums is particularly interesting, as an iPhone 16e owner details their issues with the Bluetooth audio and their experience with Apple support. After talking to UK/Europe support, the user was escalated to Apple's US support, and they had him perform a diagnostic test on the iPhone 16e to figure out why the Bluetooth audio stops: Then they had me install a profile on my iPhone which logged the Bluetooth and Wifi signals / exchanges in a diagnostic report, which ran for about 20 minutes, whilst I reproduced the issue and noted down the time (to the second) of whenever the audio stutters. This was done with data over Wifi, and data over 5G. Then they phoned me up again, the logs were packaged up, and sent through. All they could do was tell me the data and timestamps etc. were going to be looked at by engineering and they would contact me back if they wanted me to run more test… The same person said the update to iOS 18.3.2, which dropped earlier this week, did not fix the problem. A different person found that using an Oura ring might impact the Bluetooth audio on the iPhone 16e. Closing the app completely seems to fix the problem: Yes, I have the same problem, too. I found a couple of reddit threads with people experiencing the same issue. In my case it appears that the stuttering is related to having another Bluetooth connection (an Oura smart ring). If I close the Oura app, so it's not running in the background, the audio appears to work OK, but it's early days and I'm still investigating. Do you have multiple Bluetooth connections other than the headphones? I hope it's not a hardware issue with the phone. Over on Reddit, a Fitbit user said that closing the Fitbit app didn't work, but they removed the wearable from the iPhone 16e, and the Bluetooth audio was fixed. Obviously, these aren't acceptable fixes. Again, Apple is selling us devices that are connected via Bluetooth to the iPhone, whether it's Apple Watch models, AirPods, or Beats earphones. Apple wants iPhone users to buy both the Apple Watch and AirPods, so both should stay connected to the iPhone at the same time. Even if you use non-Apple wearables and wireless earphones, you should be able to mix and match products without experiencing Bluetooth audio issues. It's unclear how widespread the iPhone 16e Bluetooth audio problem is, but Apple is certainly aware of it. Hopefully, a permanent fix will be available soon. Don't Miss: RCS on iPhone will finally get end-to-end encryption The post iPhone 16e reportedly has a Bluetooth audio problem that can’t be fixed appeared first on BGR. U.S. stocks are rallying Friday, but nowhere nearly by enough to keep Wall Street from a fourth straight losing week, which would be its longest such streak since August.
