PBS Suggests Third Impeachment For Trump's Immigration Policies

PBS News Hour White House correspondent Laura Barron-Lopez had an eventful Monday show. Within the span of two minutes, she managed to omit that a recently deported visa holder admitted to attending Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah's funeral and interviewed Law Professor Kim Wehle, who suggested Trump’s immigration policies writ large should merit a third impeachment. Barron-Lopez was reporting on Dr. Rasha Alawiegh when she reported, “She’s a kidney transplant at Brown University, an H-1B visa holder from Lebanon, and she was deported last week when returning from visiting family. Now, prosecutors allege she had quote, ‘sympathetic photos of Hezbollah leaders’ and I spoke to Dr. George Bayliss who works with Dr. Alawieh in the kidney transplant department and he said that her deportation has disrupted the clinic and he fears what this could mean for other immigrant doctors as well as that pipeline of immigrant doctors who come to train in the U.S.”     Not only did Barron-Lopez leave out the fact that Alawiegh attended Nasrallah’s funeral, she also left out that she also had photos of Iran’s supreme leader. Nevertheless, host Geoff Bennett wondered, “So what does this all mean for this confrontation, some would say crisis, that we're seeing now as it relates to President Trump and the judiciary?” Barron-Lopez then switched to Trump’s use of the Alien Enemies Act to deport alleged Venezuelan gang members to El Salvador and his battles with the courts, “So, when we zoom out, Geoff, I spoke to Kim Wehle. She's a constitutional scholar with the University of Baltimore. And she already believed that the country was in a constitutional crisis, but that Trump's actions this weekend make it worse.” In a video, Wehle declared, “I think we're in uncharted waters, because presidents up until now did not take this kind of open defiance stance against the rule of law. [jump cut] I don't think there is a way, if the president is intent on ignoring court orders for the judicial branch to do anything about it. It really would require the United States Congress to step in with impeachment.” Back in the studio, Barron-Lopez added, “So, the legal experts that I spoke to, whether it's Wehle or immigration experts, agree that gang members who have been convicted should certainly be deported, but that due process is key here.” Tying both subjects together, Barron-Lopez concluded, “So whether it's across the Alien Enemies Act deportations or these deportations and detentions of legal immigrants, Wehle and immigration legal experts that I spoke to say that the Trump administration is trying to avoid due process for undocumented people, as well as those legally here. And Wehle said that, without that right, that makes the Trump administration both the judge and the jury.” In that case, Barron-Lopez should have talked to a more diverse set of experts. Here is a transcript for the March 17 show: PBS News Hour 3/17/2025 7:10 PM ET LAURA BARRON-LOPEZ: Then third there is Dr. Rasha Alawieh, she’s a kidney transplant at Brown University, an H-1B visa holder from Lebanon, and she was deported last week when returning from visiting family. Now, prosecutors allege she had quote "sympathetic photos of Hezbollah leaders" and I spoke to Dr. George Bayliss who works with Dr. Alawieh in the kidney transplant department and he said that her deportation has disrupted the clinic and he fears what this could mean for other immigrant doctors as well as that pipeline of immigrant doctors who come to train in the U.S. GEOFF BENNETT: So what does this all mean for this confrontation, some would say crisis, that we're seeing now as it relates to President Trump and the judiciary? Unlicensed midwife, worker busted for performing illegal abortions: Texas AG Paxton

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) announced this week the arrest of three individuals tied to an investigation into illegal abortions. On Monday, a press release from Paxton’s office stated that Maria Margarita Rojas, a 48-year-old midwife, was detained “for providing illegal abortions and illegally operating a network of clinics in the Northwest Houston area.”'Anyone guilty of violating our state’s pro-life laws is held accountable.'While Rojas’ clients referred to her as “Dr. Maria,” she now faces a second-degree felony for “practicing medicine without a license” and illegally performing abortions, according to Paxton’s office.Rojas reportedly owned and operated several Texas health clinics, including Clinica Waller Latinoamericana in Waller, Clinica Latinoamericana Telge in Cypress, and Latinoamericana Medical Clinic in Spring. The AG’s office stated that the clinics “unlawfully employed unlicensed individuals who falsely presented themselves as licensed medical professionals to provide medical treatment.” “Rojas also performed illegal abortion procedures in her clinics in direct violation of the Texas Human Life Protection Act,” the press release added. “In addition to the arrest, Attorney General Paxton’s Healthcare Program Enforcement Division filed for a temporary restraining order to shut down Rojas’s network of clinics to prevent further illegal activity.”On Tuesday, Paxton’s office issued a second press release announcing the arrest of 29-year-old Jose Manuel Cendan Ley, who allegedly assisted Rojas with at least one illegal abortion. He is also accused of practicing medicine without a license.“Ley is a Cuban national who entered the U.S. illegally in 2022 and was later paroled under the open borders policies enacted by the lawless Biden Administration,” Paxton’s office stated.Citing court records, the Texas Tribune reported that Rojas was first arrested on March 6 and held on $10,000 bond for allegedly practicing without a medical license. On Monday, she was arrested again with Ley on additional charges, including performing illicit abortions. A Waller County judge set their bonds at $500,000 for the illegal abortion charges and $200,000 for charges related to practicing without a medical license.Rubildo Labanino Matos, 54, was arrested as part of the same investigation. Matos, a nurse practitioner placed on probation, is also accused of the unlicensed practice of medicine. Paxton’s office stated that the investigation remains ongoing.“Individuals killing unborn babies by performing illegal abortions in Texas will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law, and I will not rest until justice is served,” Paxton said. “I will continue to fight to protect life and work to ensure that anyone guilty of violating our state’s pro-life laws is held accountable.”Paxton’s office noted that abortion providers, not patients, can be held criminally responsible under Texas law. Rojas did not respond to a request for comment from KPRC. Calls to her clinics were not answered, the Texas Tribune reported.Like Blaze News? Schumer tries to stay afloat as Democratic Party sinks

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) is scrambling to keep his career afloat following another disastrous week for Democrats. Schumer's most recent political fiasco left Democrats more divided than ever. Last week, House Republicans passed their funding bill, which President Donald Trump endorsed, with all but one Democrat voting against it. Although the Trump-backed bill made it through, House Democrats were at least unified in their opposition. But once the continuing resolution made its way to the Senate, Democrats changed their tune.'We have a lot of good people,' Schumer said on CBS Tuesday. 'But I am the best at winning Senate seats.'The Republican majority in the Senate needed Democratic support to ensure the CR cleared a procedural vote, ultimately averting a government shutdown. With the Friday deadline fast approaching, Democrats were left to decide if they wanted to throw their support behind the Trump-endorsed CR or to vote for a shutdown.Schumer initially signaled his support for a shutdown, following in the footsteps of his colleagues in the House. But as the pressure mounted, Schumer reversed his position and said he would instead be voting to advance the CR. This decision sparked outrage within the Democratic Party, with prominent figures like former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (Calif.) and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (N.Y.) denouncing the tactic. In the end, 10 Senate Democrats joined 52 Republicans to advance the funding bill.Although Schumer averted a shutdown, his Democratic Party remained fractured. In the aftermath, the Democratic Party's favorability dropped to record lows, and many pinned the blame on Schumer. The overall reception of last week's political theatre was so negative, Schumer even postponed his highly anticipated book tour until the dust settled. Even still, Schumer attempted to assure Democrats that he was still the "best leader for the Senate." "We have a lot of good people," Schumer said on CBS Tuesday. "But I am the best at winning Senate seats."Schumer continued his damage-control media tour, making an appearance on "The View" Tuesday. When the hosts pressed him about his leadership, Schumer tried to pin the blame on Trump. "I wake up at three in the morning sometimes so worried about the future of the country under these oligarchs!” Schumer said. "We are fighting them tooth and nail in every way that we can, but you've got to fight them smart.""I felt an obligation to stop it," Schumer added. Like Blaze News? DeSantis warns Florida city to  'govern yourselves accordingly' after refusing agreement with ICE

Governor Ron DeSantis (R) released a statement after Fort Myers' city council voted against an agreement to have the police department work with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, saying there is new state law that requires cooperation with the federal government. The agreement would have allowed ICE to train local law enforcement officers to carry out federal immigration duties while they are carrying out their regular duties. The city council voted 3-3, resulting in the agreement not being adopted. One council member was not present. The Fort Myers police chief spoke in favor of the 287(g) agreement, while residents who spoke did not.'These council members['] actions likely run afoul of Florida Statute, and my office will be investigating.'"Thanks to the laws we’ve recently enacted in Florida, local entities are required to participate in federal immigration enforcement. The 287 (g) program trains local law enforcement to aid ICE. Florida will ensure its laws are followed, and when it comes to immigration — the days of inaction are over. Govern yourselves accordingly," DeSantis said on X.Attorney General James Uthmeier likewise expressed frustration with the city for not agreeing to help ICE, adding that his office will conduct an investigation."The Fort Myers City Council’s vote to not approve the police department’s 287(g) agreement with ICE is very troubling. Preventing a local law enforcement agency from entering into a 287(g) agreement with the federal government prevents that agency from participating in certain federal immigration operations," Uthmeier said. "These council members['] actions likely run afoul of Florida Statute, and my office will be investigating."The new laws recently passed by the state legislature were part of DeSantis' goal to have Florida be the number-one state in utilizing state and local police departments to help the Trump administration carry out mass deportations.Rep. Byron Donalds (R), who represents the Fort Myers area and is running to be the next governor, also criticized the city council for its "atrocious disregard for the safety and security of our Southwest Florida community," claiming the decision not to pass the agreement should be "roundly condemned.""We are putting the American people first again and every council-member who voted to flagrantly violate federal and state law should lose their job."Like Blaze News? 'Captain America' actor Anthony Mackie tells undrafted NFL player success is 'given,' not 'earned,' in confusing rant

'Captain America' actor Anthony Mackie tells undrafted NFL player success is 'given,' not 'earned,' in confusing rant

Actor Anthony Mackie claimed that success is "given," not "earned," and depends on a selection process and the gift of opportunity.Mackie's seemingly backward comments were delivered on the "Pivot Podcast," where he was speaking to former NFL players and hosts Ryan Clark, Channing Crowder, and Fred Taylor. The "Captain America" and "Twisted Metal" star said it was wrong to tell children to do the right thing and make good grades in order to become successful and that "hard work pays off" is a lie."That's not true. Success is given; it's not earned. Because you can be the most brilliant motherf**ker, if one person don't tap you, each one of y'all, there were people who could hit harder, who could catch better, who could run faster ... but somebody said 'you, you're the one,' and the other 50 behind you fell off."The cameras then cut to reactions from Crowder and Clark, who both appeared shocked.Mackie's advice would seemingly fly in the face of the careers of both players, as while Taylor was a highly touted first-round pick who enjoyed an accolade-filled NFL career, the road to success was a lot tougher for his co-hosts. Clark went undrafted in 2002 until he was signed by the New York Giants and got the opportunity to play on special teams. He eventually won a Super Bowl with the Pittsburgh Steelers after being named to the Pro Bowl in 2011.Crowder was a third-round draft pick who played five years with the Miami Dolphins. In response, Crowder asked the actor how he went from an inexperienced performer (who he said did not portray rapper Tupac Shakur very well in a movie) to now being the lead in one of Marvel's biggest franchises as Captain America.Interestingly, Mackie did not attribute his own success to being selected or having it given to him. Rather, he said his success was due to "diligence."The actor then went into a lengthy story about his extreme levels of preparation for theater auditions and how he has seized opportunities in the casting phase throughout his career."Every audition I've been in, I do the audition, that's when it's like, 'Where you from? What you doing?' Now I know you're interested," Mackie recalled, explaining how he captivated casting directors and producers. The actor ignored the idea that he was gifted success and instead lamented about how he is a master of his craft. Anthony Mackie attends a "Captain America: Brave New World" screening in New York City. Photo by Dimitrios Kambouris/Getty Images'We've been living through the death of the American male.'Later in the podcast, Mackie spoke on masculinity and how he raises his sons in the face of weakened testosterone levels across the globe. The 46-year-old noted that he has always told his oldest son that he is the man of the house when he is away and to ensure that the house is secured when he goes to sleep."In the past 20 years, we've been living through the death of the American male," he claimed. "They have literally killed masculinity in our homes and our communities, for one reason or another, but I raise my boys to be young men."Mackie argued that "American masculinity" is very different than in other countries and specifically noted how weak European men appear."You feel it when you go to Europe," he said.Mackie added, "It's just that. That American male masculinity is something I think is very important for boys, because now, our little boys are afraid to fail, so they don't try."Often speaking in support of traditional gender roles, Mackie reinforced his view by saying European men often baffle him with their "tight-ass pants."Like Blaze News?
