President Joe Biden‚ facing poor polling numbers for a Democratic candidate with young voters‚ announced another student loan bailout program this week ahead of the 2024 presidential election.His new plan comes after the U.S. Supreme Court blocked his attempt to this last year because it was illegal.Bidens new plan would take taxpayer money to wipe out the student loan debt of over 30 million borrowers‚ the White House said. The administration said that the actions were specifically designed to provide relief to black and Latino borrowers who attended community college and who are financially vulnerable because they took out debt but never had the chance to complete their degree.The plan would provide relief to borrowers who owe more than they did at the start of repayment; borrowers who are otherwise eligible for loan forgiveness‚ but have not yet applied; borrowers who first entered repayment many years ago; borrowers who enrolled in low-financial-value programs; and borrowers experiencing hardship paying back their loans.Today‚ too many Americans‚ especially young people‚ are saddled with unsustainable debts in exchange for a college degree‚ Biden said from an event in Wisconsin. The ability for working and middle class folks to repay their student loans has become so burdensome that a lot cant repay it for even decades after being in school.Even when they work hard and pay their student loans‚ their debt increases‚ not diminishes‚ he said. Too many people feel the strain and stress wondering if they can get married‚ have their first child‚ start a family because even if they get by‚ they still have this crushing‚ crushing debt‚ and its not just a drag on them.Biden claimed that people couldnt buy homes because they had to repay their student loans when most people cant afford homes because of high interests that were sparked by the inflation that his American Rescue Plan caused.Tens of millions of peoples debt was literally about to get canceled‚ but then some of my Republican friends and elected officials and special interests sued us and the Supreme Court blocked us‚ but that didntwell‚ that didnt stop us‚ he said. No‚ I mean it sincerely. We continue to find alternative paths to reduce student debt payment that are not challenging.WATCH:

The student loan bailout is framed as a courtship of young voters.Cut to Gutierrez and the very grateful former teacher who had $15‚000 of his debt paid off by the American taxpayer. Surprised and grateful.Gutierrez then gets into the student loan bailout‚ but not very deeply. He says that The White House is using a different legal basis than the one that got shot down by the Supreme Court‚ but with no explanation as to what that is. Gutierrez cites unnamed Republicans as being opposed to the bailout‚ but doesnt say which ones.As a matter of comparison‚ PBS did find the time to get into these things:LISA DESJARDINS: Now let';s talk about the future of this in the courts.As soon as this rule comes out‚ do you think there could be an injunction against it filed immediately? Do you think that this is clear clearly on strong legal grounds? What';s going to happen?DANIELLE DOUGLAS-GABRIEL: I mean‚ certainly‚ it';s on stronger legal grounds‚ from what experts are telling me‚ than the previous rule‚ because it';s backed by a different authority.The Higher Education Act‚ which governs pretty much all of higher ed in terms of financial aid and all of those things‚ is the anchor for this‚ whereas the other rule was based on a 9/11 kind of emergency power rule that the Supreme Court didn';t really think met the smell test.So‚ in this instance‚ I think it will be a little harder to see an immediate injunction because this went through a negotiated rulemaking process. The rule is going to come online next July‚ regardless of who';s in office. There will likely be challenges. And it';s certainly if the Trump administration were to win‚ they could choose not to enforce the rule. They could also choose to try to rescind the rule.The student loan bailout is likely another authoritarian distribution scheme‚ but seemingly paired with a law that might make it more difficult to contest in court. But there wasnt enough time for NBC to talk about this. There was disaffected youth to talk about instead. The youth that Biden intends to court but is currently protesting the Biden administrations Gaza policy.The report closes with polling showing major youth vote shrinkage‚ and with the two disaffected sophomores who are not thrilled about voting for Biden in the general election.Like so many stories running these days‚ the focus is not on the thing itself but on that things effect on the electoral prospects of Joe Biden. Whether on Gaza or on student loan bailouts of dubious constitutionality‚ the focus is the same: Protect the Precious.

An excavation at the site of a real estate development in Grove‚ Oxfordshire‚ has uncovered the remains of a richly-decorated Roman villa complex that contained a wealth of artifacts including coins‚ jewelry‚ lead curse tablets without curses and tiny votive axes. It had a long period of occupation‚ from construction in the 1st or 2nd century through abandonment in the late 4th or early 5th century.During a year of excavation‚ archaeologists from the Red River Archaeology Group unearthed a monumental aisled building with internal colonnades typical of the late 1st century A.D. The building was likely multistorey and almost 11‚000 square feet just on the ground floor. No columns have survived‚ but four column bases have and they are among the largest of their kind ever found in Roman Britain.Adjacent to that building is a winged corridor villa characterized by a central group of rooms flanked on each side by wings of rooms accessed by a central corridor. It had walls painted with floral motifs and mosaic floors as well as an intricate brickwork floor. Hypocaust tiles have been found‚ the remnants of a hypocaust underfloor heating system for private bathhouses. A cereal drying oven was also discovered‚ part of the complexs agricultural and food storage function.Hundreds of coins‚ rings and brooches have been found in the villa complex. One particularly significant piece is a double horse-head brooch or buckle dating to between 350 and 450 A.D. It was likely worn by a member of the military elites. They also found several axes small enough to fit in a palm‚ and a number of tightly scrolled lead strips look just like curse tablets. The ones that have been unfurled so far are blank on the inside. If they were meant to curse‚ the curse itself was left unwritten. The mini axes coupled with the mysterious curse-like scrolls‚ suggest the villa or some part of the complex was a site of pilgrimage or ritual significance. The sheer size of the buildings that still survive and the richness of goods recovered suggest this was a dominant feature in the locality‚ if not the wider landscape‚ Louis Stafford‚ Red River Archaeology senior project manager‚ said.Her colleague Francesca Giarelli added the site was far more complex than a regular rural site and clearly was an important centre of activities for a long time.Here is a drone video flyover of the site:
