Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) is forcing the GOP-led House to vote on a resolution to impeach Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle, who is facing backlash over the security failure underlying the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump earlier this month. Hours after Cheatle testified before the House Oversight Committee on Monday about how the Secret Service “failed” its mission, Mace introduced the resolution on Monday with a privileged motion, forcing leadership to take action on it within the next 48 hours. “The House has NEVER voted on an impeachment of an inferior civil officer … but historic times call for historic measures,” Mace said in a post to X, which also contained a video that showed the congresswoman introducing her resolution on the House floor. Nancy Mace (@RepNancyMace) July 23, 2024 Questions have been raised about how a shooter, identified as a 20-year-old man named Thomas Matthew Crooks, managed to get onto a nearby rooftop and begin shooting with an AR-style rifle at the stage in Butler, Pennsylvania, before the Secret Service could stop him. A Secret Service sniper shot and killed the gunman from another building while other personnel rushed to protect Trump and escort him off the stage, but not before a bullet ripped through the former president’s ear. One rally-goer was killed and two others were injured. Putting on a bipartisan front, Democrats and Republicans have called on Cheatle to resign over the incident. Mace asked Cheatle during the hearing if she would like to use her five minutes for questioning the witness to “draft” a resignation letter, but Cheatle declined. Mace got Cheatle to say “yes” when asked whether the shooting was a “colossal failure,” whether it was preventable, and whether the Secret Service had been transparent. She called “bulls***” when Cheatle claimed she did not know how her opening statement leaked. ?MUST WATCH? MACE: “So, Director Cheatle, I have a series of questions. Jamie Raskin (D-MD), the top member of the panel, released a rare bipartisan letter after the hearing saying Cheatle “failed” to provide answers and reassure the American people. They also called on Cheatle to resign. Mace said in a thread posted to X that the House “cannot wait for Director Cheatle to resign.” The congresswoman went on to say the Secret Service director “must be impeached immediately. The lives of all Secret Service protectees hang in the balance.”

Vice President Kamala Harris has secured enough delegates to officially become the Democrat Party’s presidential nominee when the delegates cast their votes next month. Harris, who was forced to quit her 2020 presidential campaign before the voting started, will likely become the party’s nominee without ever having earned a single vote from Democrat voters. The Associated Press reported that Harris had secured the backing of more than the 1,976 delegates, the number that she would need to reach to win the nomination. Harris only launched her campaign on Sunday after President Joe Biden announced that he was ending his failing re-election campaign as he continued to fall further behind former President Donald Trump in the polls. How will The New York Times treat the Democrat’s sudden frontrunner for the party’s 2024 presidential nomination, VP Kamala Harris? Monday’s front-page Times story by Michael Shear was supportive but relatively muted, expressing a little uncertainly among Democrats: “After a Shaky Start, Harris Is Suddenly on Brink of Leading Democratic Ticket.” But if Harris is crowned Trump’s official challenger for the presidency, expect the tone to shift dramatically in favor of Harris and perhaps even more so against her Republican critics. Before Harris actually assumed the office of vice president in 2020 and proved herself an embarrassing dud via her many gaffes and awkward public appearances, the New York Times fiercely, falsely defended her against “racist, sexist attacks” from Republicans and Fox News. The Times went on an absolute tear in defense of VP-candidate Harris, from calling Trump’s own vice president Mike Pence a sexist to turning every conservative argument against Harris into proof of her opponents’ underlying, yes, “racism and sexism.” The opening sentence of an August 12, 2020 story after Joe Biden picked Harris to be his running mate set the hysterical tone of the paper’s coverage: From the first hours after Joseph R. Biden Jr. chose Kamala Harris as his running mate, President Trump, his Republican allies and conservative hosts on Fox News unfurled a string of sexist attacks on Ms. Harris. When the vice president’s debate rolled around in October 2020, reporter Maggie Astor plunged full force into the shameless smear in her pathetic defense of Harris in “Facing a ‘Double Bind’ of Racism and Sexism.” Astor unearthed racist tropes in every word a conservative dared use to describe Harris: These caricatures and double standards have been accompanied by sexualization, common against women of all races but especially those who are Black. This is another racist trope, the promiscuous, hypersexual “Jezebel.” Literally anything critical of Kamala was considered racist by deluded Astor:  But the same tendency can be seen in smaller forms, like the frequent mispronunciations of her name and descriptions of her as inauthentic, including calling her 'phony.' Even before the VP debate, reporters Sydney Ember and Lisa Lerer wrote: While many Democrats view Ms. Harris as a barrier-breaking hero, Fox News hosts and conservative media outlets have mounted racist and sexist assaults on her reputation, painting her as a radical leftist. Fast-forward to early July 2024 and the Times’ Erica Green hailing Harris while accusing the GOP of, you guessed it, “racism and sexism.” In recent days, the Trump campaign and Republican critics have amped up their attacks on her, hinting at how a Harris candidacy could lead to even more of the kinds of racist and sexist assaults that she has been fending off during her time as vice president.

Joe Biden is finally dragged out of the race, kicking and screaming, and then he’s suddenly praised for a graceful exit and compared to George Washington. Biden should be compared to less-than-great presidents like Millard Fillmore. There's nothing funnier than the Democrats spending three weeks trying to drag Biden out of the race, and when he finally knuckles under, then he's like George Washington, and he's shown honor and grace and patriotism. Suddenly, Biden is Washington, Lincoln, JFK, LBJ, the Roman leader Cincinnatus, and I keep waiting for a comparison to Superman now isolating with Covid in his Fortress of Solitude. If he was all about gracefully resigning, why didn't he do it weeks ago? He's been at the center of a long and ugly Democrat spat, but they want to make it sound like they're in a serene moment. It's a Potemkin Moment of Zen. He didn't show grace. He climbed the greasy pole of power and had to be dragged away from it, stubbornly insisting that only God himself could take him out of the race. He told an interviewer last week that only an adverse medical condition would make him get out, which effectively underlines he has an adverse medical condition.  Speaking of brain fractures, former Senator Claire McCaskill touted Biden by claiming He doesn't have anybody in his cabinet that’s not- that wasn't endorsing him. He doesn't have a vice president that isn't gonna be at his convention. He doesn't have, you know, loads of people saying, “oh, I wish it were someone else” behind the scenes." How's that for turning reality upside down? Hollywood was happy. "Luke Skywalker" himself, actor Mark Hamill tweeted Biden "has a record of accomplishments unmatched by any president in our lifetime. He restored honesty, dignity & integrity to the office after 4 years of lies, crime, scandal & chaos." The Bidens never lie or have scandals. That's what you might believe if you only sample pro-Biden media.  Then Rob Reiner tweeted "Kamala Harris will be the 47th President of the United States. Democracy will survive." For the anti-Meathead spirit, we turn to T. Becket Adams over at the National Journalism Center: "The Biden presidency will end just as it began: With a completely shambolic withdrawal, executed with little to no planning or consideration and at a great cost to those who rely on the White House for accountable and responsible leadership."
