Five Quick Things: Kamala Shows Us Who She Is

I’ve been cautioning the Eeyores in my circle of right-leaning friends — and there are many of them, which isn’t a great surprise given the reduced state of realities facing the American people in the late summer of 2024 — that eventually this Kamala Harris sugar-high would necessarily peter itself out once Team Harris was forced to actually enter the playing field of policy. Team Harris conspired with the legacy corporate propaganda press to morph the candidate from a laughingstock of an empty skirt into some sort of idiocratic cultural phenomenon virtually overnight, something that doesn’t appear to have impressed anything like a consensus of people but has without question given partisan Democrat voters at least a thin reed of joyful exuberance to cling to. But the problem with all of this is that it’s based on nothing. It’s just emotion. It’s a release of all the dread they felt from having to pretend that Joe Biden was anything other than a demented husk of a man incapable of carrying on an average office job, much less the presidency of these United States. Now they can pretend Kamala Harris, who is no more competent than Biden but at least looks the part of an active-duty politician, can run the country. And it’s easier for them to live with themselves, because after all, Who Are You To Question Her, White Boy? All this is fine as far as it goes, but political sugar highs will last no more than a week or two, three weeks at the maximum, before they begin to crash. And when they do, you’d better have some protein in the diet to keep things going. That means policy. And for Harris, it means problems. Which leads us to… 1. Behold, the Price Controls Late Wednesday, we found out that Harris was set to take America into the weekend with news that her first announced policy proposal is… something straight out of Iron Curtain fiasco economics: Soviet-style centrally administered price controls on food and grocery prices will form part of the federal economic proposals U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris will unveil Friday when she finally delivers an insight into her 2024 policies. Her address will mark the first time Harris offers a policy focused speech since she was anointed as the Democratic candidate in July and been roundly accused by critics since as being a policy-free zone, as Breitbart News reported. The Democratic nominee is promising to institute a first-ever national ban on price gouging and price-fixing within her first 100 days in office in an effort to deflect many voters’ low marks for President Joe Biden’s handling of the economy. Time magazine reports Harris plans to direct the Federal Trade Commission and other agencies to investigate and penalize “big corporations” that violate government rules in a mirror of Soviet command economy diktats. Other ways of tackling price fixing and selective anti-competitive practices in the food and grocery industries will also come under scrutiny, her campaign said by way of previewing her full set of economic proposals. Harris will also reportedly detail plans to cut prescription drug and housing costs in the economic address during her visit to Raleigh, North Carolina. One wonders whether we’re going to see another run on toilet paper and other dry goods starting this weekend. What’s almost certain is there will be a run on seeds, because now is an absolutely perfect time to start planning for a Kamala garden just in case she manages to win. Price controls inevitably lead to shortages. Everyone with a working brain not poisoned by the communist mind virus knows this. If you happen not to know it, here’s Thomas Sowell to explain it to you: The thing to recognize about Harris — or Team Harris, if you prefer, because let’s face it, Kamala Harris isn’t making any decisions here — is we’re not talking about intelligent people at the helm of this cabal. Oh, they’re pretty savvy demagogues. You have to give them that. They’re fair to middling at stirring up stupid people over the short term. But the problem with price controls and the shortages they produce is that in a very short time what you get is two things. First, a black market develops in the goods you’ve tried to control, and the people who run the black market very often are a whole lot meaner than you are — which causes all kinds of unforeseen trouble. And second, the people who used to have access to those goods and now don’t will rightly blame you for their loss. Will it help you to win an election to promise price controls? That’s possible, I suppose. But once you’ve won and you then have to govern after imposing that reality, you find yourself resorting to nastier and nastier means of controlling an unruly public. Just ask Nicolás Maduro, who had to put on one of the most laughably fraudulently elections in human history in order to stay in power after price-controlling his way into an 80 percent economic contraction and jettisoning some eight million of his citizens in a peacetime mass outmigration never before seen on this planet. It isn’t hyperbole to say that Kamala Harris being elected would signal the end of America as we’ve known it. Heretofore that statement has been based on the cultural Marxism she embodies and purveys. But with the signal she’s giving, now we know we’re facing the economic version of Marxism as well. You’re going to want to live in a red state pretty soon if she does win this thing, because red state governors and legislatures will be the only protectors of freedom — economic and otherwise — left in America. Or you can make sure everybody you’ve ever met and some that you haven’t gets off the couch and votes this idiotic woman down in November. That’ll at least buy the American experiment a little more time. 2. How Much of This Will We See in Chicago Next Week? You shouldn’t be happy about this. Shame on you: A hastily organized rally supporting Vice President Kamala Harris descended into chaos after anti-Israel protesters infiltrated the Big Apple event — and later barged into an afterparty venue, causing several thousand dollars’ worth of damage to its outdoor space. Several demonstrators against Israel’s military campaign in Gaza were booted from the Democratic gathering in Harlem, where Mayor Eric Adams gave an impassioned speech. “Make sure you vote,” Hizzoner chanted as the disrupters were dragged from the tiny venue in Upper Manhattan. Adams stood with other prominent elected state Democrats, including City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams (who is not related to the mayor) and Gov. Kathy Hochul, as he endorsed the party’s presidential ticket. … While protesters were escorted out of the main rally, which sources said wasn’t attended by Harris or her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, the demonstration took an ugly turn in front of a restaurant where up to 25 attendees stopped afterward. The angry mob of around 50 protesters even stormed into the restaurant Bird in Hand at Broadway and West 146th Street as stunned patrons looked on, according to footage from the scene. Other videos showed cops taking rabble-rousers into custody as a crowd circled the police. Whistles and horns sounded, and smoke bombs were also set off during the brouhaha. No. Stop that snickering. At least until there’s a lot more of it at the convention. 3. Tim Walz Doesn’t Love China, He Loves the Chinese Communist Party The defense of Harris’ horrendous vice presidential pick on the issue of his lifelong over-friendly relations with China, which includes a few long visits there working as a teacher to the children of Chinese Communist Party fatcats and some close ties with CCP-funded nongovernmental organizations, is that Walz is a big fan of the Chinese people. But he isn’t, as it turns out. As Peter Schweizer notes, Walz has allowed Chinese residents of Minnesota to be terrorized by that country’s regime through one of seven secret police stations the ChiComs have set up here in America. It’s in Minneapolis, and it’s an ugly thing: While speaking on several of the Minnesota governor’s unsavory links to the Chinese government, Schweizer mentioned the “secret police stations that the Chinese have here in the United States,” which are unofficial but “so-called united front groups that exist in the West.” Schweizer, who also serves as president of the Government Accountability Institute, said these stations “cooperate with Chinese intelligence” in order to “intimidate Chinese that are living in the United States that don’t like the CCP or [are] critical of the CCP.” … Schweizer said the stations are known to kidnap detractors: What happens is they will literally go around and visit people and say, ‘Hey, you know you need to shut up. You need to stop talking about this. You need to stop being so critical of the government.’  And there actually have been at least half a dozen documented cases where these networks have actually been involved in abducting people, that is, Chinese that are living in the United States, abducting them and sending them back to mainland China. Going on to refer to one alleged CCP police outpost in the Twin Cities, Schweizer said it is “tied to a group called Minnesota Global, which is a Tim Walz organization.” “Now Tim Walz in 2020 and since 2020 has talked ad nauseam about the abuse by the police, the Twin Cities police, the local Minneapolis Police, about their terrible behavior with regards to how they arrest people,” the author continued. “I have not found one criticism that Tim Walz has had of this Chinese secret police station that’s operating in the Twin Cities. So again, you have to wonder, why is there this disconnect?” he posed. “Why are you so critical and brutal on your own country, but you won’t do a scintilla of the same thing as it regards to China?” So much for a love of the Chinese people. No honorable American leader would put up with such a presence within his jurisdiction, but of course Tim Walz is anything but honorable. As Nate Hochman, Tony Kinnett ,and I talked about in one of our Spectacle Podcast episodes this week, Walz is the gift that keeps on giving to the Trump campaign. And while this election is about Kamala Harris and not Walz, let’s remember — Walz and the Soviet price controls are pretty much the only two decisions Kamala Harris can be held to account for at this point, and they’re both unmitigated disasters. 4. Think They’re Going to Put Trump in Jail? We’ll find out on Sept. 18, though Trump’s lawyers are busy trying to delay Judge Juan Merchan’s sentencing decision in that kangaroo court Stormy Daniels hush-money case until after the election. If you’re Merchan, that has to be a little bit tempting, don’t you think? After all, if he tries to put Trump in jail and Trump wins the election, Merchan might as well hop a flight back to Bogota and forget about ever coming back — Trump will almost certainly exact all the revenge he can, and he’ll be the president in doing so. Meanwhile, it’s only a matter of time before an appellate court throws that whole case in the trash, either because of the Supreme Court’s presidential immunity ruling or a host of other reversible-error items. And actually putting Trump in prison in the middle of the campaign would carry such terrifying ramifications not just for the country — Merchan doesn’t seem to give a fig for the country — but for his own personal well-being that it’s hard to imagine anybody doing it. On the other hand, we should be well-trained by now never to underestimate the depths of depravity and aggression the Left in this country will plumb. So I’m not predicting it one way or another. You guys are welcome to take a stab at it in the comments. 5. Disney Dumped Out a Snow White Trailer, and the Critical Drinker Just Dumped All Over It This is perhaps an all-time best, and it’s as long-awaited as the inevitable bomb that is Disney’s ruination of the timeless Snow White franchise. You just knew that the Drinker was going to Tsar Bomba the thing, and he does not disappoint. Particularly given the material Disney just supplied him with. Is it even possible this won’t be one of the worst movies ever made? Nah. It’s going to aggressively suck, and audiences will aggressively hate it. I personally can’t wait to see the blowback. Is Walz Worse Than Newsom?

Kamala Harris’ running mate, Tim Walz, governor of Minnesota, is drawing comparisons to California Gov. Gavin Newsom, who also has national ambitions. Outside of military experience, of which Newsom has none, the two men do have a few things in common. Consider, for example, their response to the COVID pandemic. As Minnesota attorney John Hinderaker notes, Gov. Walz issued an executive order that “prohibited any resident of Minnesota from leaving his or her house, except as permitted by him. It was perhaps the most overtly fascist measure in America’s history.” To monitor compliance, Walz set up a hotline for informers. Their tips led to reports on people playing basketball, walking their dog, and attending church. Walz limited church attendance to 10 persons, or 25 percent of a congregation, and his hotline remained operational until June 2022. Newsom did not set up a snitch line, but according to members of the state National Guard, he readied an F-15C fighter jet to frighten demonstrators protesting his COVID crackdown. The governor’s office denies any such deployment was ever in the works, but the people might wonder what could possibly have gone wrong. Newsom did issue a stay-at-home order, proposed a ban on sport fishing, and on his watch police arrested solitary paddleboarders on ocean beaches. Newsom’s rules for private gatherings mandated six-foot distancing and discouraged singing or the playing of musical instruments such as the trumpet and clarinet. “All gatherings must be held outside,” the governor’s rules stipulated. “Attendees may go inside to use restrooms as long as the restrooms are frequently sanitized.” Those rules are no longer in effect, but Newsom maintains many other COVID restrictions. In April of 2020, Newsom spent $1 billion on masks from a Chinese company, hiding details of the deal even from fellow Democrats. Californians have yet to receive a full accounting for this unnecessary spending. Tim Walz has taken heat for mandating tampons in boys’ restrooms, but his overall policy is much broader. Walz signed legislation turning Minnesota into a “trans refuge,” a legal sanctuary for children from other states. In similar style, Newsom signed a bill to offer refuge to children from other states in search of “gender-affirming care.” Neither governor expressed concern about the dangers of hormone treatments, puberty blockers, and irreversible “reassignment” surgeries such as penectomy and vaginoplasty. Newsom also signed Senate Bill 145, giving judges a say on listing an adult as a sex offender for oral or anal sex with a minor if the adult is no more than 10 years older. Supporters defended the measure as equal treatment for homosexual defendants, but San Diego Democrat Lorena Gonzalez didn’t think so. “I cannot in my mind as a mother understand how sex between a 24-year-old and a 14-year-old could ever be consensual,” Gonzalez said while the measure was being debated. For his part, Walz signed H.F. 1655, an amendment to the Take Pride Act, which outlawed discrimination based on “gender identity” and “sexual orientation.” As with California’s SB-145, signed by Newsom, critics charged that it protected pedophiles. As it happens, the two governors also share enthusiasm for China. Tim Walz first visited China in 1989, months after the Tiananmen Square massacre, and returned to the communist nation some 30 times. Walz taught in China and spent his honeymoon there with his wife Gwen, also a teacher. The couple led high school tour groups and went on to arrange annual student trips to the PRC. Walz maintains close relations with the U.S.-China Peoples Friendship Association (USCPFA), founded in 1971 as a communist front organization in the manner of Soviet front groups of the 1930s and 1940s. In 2019 Walz spoke at a USCPFA convention on a bill with Li Xialin, president of the China People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (CPAFFC), which leads efforts to influence American politicians. California is doubtless the most pro-China state, choosing to use Chinese materials and labor for the new span of the Bay Bridge, which came in 10 years late, $5 billion over budget, and riddled with safety issues. Newsom visited China in 2023, expressing little if any criticism of the regime’s human rights record. Newsom was mayor of San Francisco, which in recent years has become something of an open-air latrine. When China’s Xi Jinping came to town for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit last November, Newsom had the city scrubbed clean and the homeless population kept out of sight. Locals wondered why these services had not been performed for longtime city residents. As veteran California commentator Dan Walters notes, Gavin Newsom is drenched in old money from the Newsom, Getty, Brown and Pelosi families. Walz is of humbler background, born in Nebraska to a “public school administrator and community activist.” On the other hand, when it comes to wielding national power, Tim Walz may soon hold a decided advantage. Lloyd Billingsley is a policy fellow at the Independent Institute in Oakland, Calif. Kamala and Her Price-Control Scheme Straight Outta Berkeley

Kamala Harris gaslights America Friday with her fake plan against “price gouging” designed to hide rather than solve what really causes pain at the checkout line. “Kamala Harris will call for a federal ban on food and grocery price gouging as part of a broader set of proposals intended to reduce consumer costs,” Bloomberg reports. The proposal also seeks to examine the merger between Albertsons and Kroger. From the people who took inflation from 1.4 percent up to 9.1 percent in their first year and a half in the White House comes this economically illiterate “price control” scheme. It relies not on the democracy of the market, where buyers and sellers set prices based on how much they will pay and sell, but the dictatorship of a few people in Washington to determine by whim the “fairness” of price for this or that item. Within a short ride from your correspondent’s laptop, Price Chopper, Big Y, Walmart, Shaw’s, Stop & Shop, Target, Trader Joe’s, Aldi, Whole Foods, Wegman’s, and several other supermarkets allow shoppers to, well, shop. If you do not like one store, you can buy groceries at another. And if you do not like the supermarkets, then butchers, produce stands, bakers, and other smaller operations abound. Choice, the prerequisite to a truly free market, exists. Why must Kamala Harris act as the Instacart shopper for all 340 million of us? This takes away choice from sellers, which in the past has led to shortages and black markets. No capitalist sells an item for a loss and remains a capitalist for long. Washington, unfortunately, already determined our high prices through a fiscal policy of trillion-dollar deficits in five of the most recent fiscal years and a monetary policy that finances that fiscal recklessness through a Federal Reserve funds rate that in 2022 effectively stood at zero and a balance sheet that nearly reached $9 trillion at the same time. A dishonesty characterizes not only Harris’s proposals but the whole conversation surrounding inflation, a word referring to inflating the amount of circulating currency and not to the blowing up of price, which comes as a byproduct of increasing the supply of money (or anything) without a corresponding market demand. Beyond terminological atrocities, the conversation demagogically shifts blame from the malefactors (politicians and central bankers) to the nefarious Them — in this case, middlemen and merchants. In fact, middlemen and merchants did not really increase prices; Washington shrank the value of the dollar. Store prices for the most part merely react to the increasing supply, which drives down value, of dollars. As with requiring ID to enter some of her rallies as she rails against the states that require them for voting, Harris tells the rest of us to do as she says and not as she does. Harris charged donors from $3,300 to $500,000 for hors d’oeuvres and mimosas at a Sunday morning fundraiser at San Francisco’s Fairmont Hotel. Would her proposed initiative target such price gouging by politicians? Because it does seem as though hors d’oeuvres at Kroger — Pagoda Frozen Pork Potstickers with Lime Ponzu Dipping Sauce currently go for a sale price of $4.19 for 9.5 ounces while supplies last — run on the cheaper side vis-a-vis a Kamala Harris fundraiser. Profligate government spending and subsequent bailouts from central banks, which create excessive currency, cause inflation. Switzerland, which did not inflate its currency during and after the pandemic as we did, experienced no annual inflation rate as high as our current “low” consumer price index rate. Turkey, which inflated its currency more than did the United States, experienced triple-digit rates. The profound variation in the most recognizable symptom of inflation — price — resulted from profound difference in monetary policy. Monetary policy remains the only proven way to effectively curtail rising prices. The best way to allow the Federal Reserve to pursue responsible monetary policy, which they essentially have been doing for the last two years or so, involves legislators and presidents limiting government expenditures. The vice president wants to expand government spending, so she must engage in this subterfuge — blaming the supermarket in your hometown rather than the politicians in the city in which she lives — for the 20 percent spike in everything since Joe Biden and Kamala Harris took office. Grocers did not gouge prices. Politicians gouged the value of the dollar. Literally Just One Day Later, We Got A Major Confirmation That Something Really Big Could Be Happening

Are we not supposed to notice that something big is going on?  Literally just one day after the World Health Organization classified the Monkeypox outbreak in central Africa as a “public health emergency of international concern”, a confirmed case of the new mutant strain of Monkeypox was confirmed in Sweden.  Did the WHO know about this case before they made their announcement?  Somebody really needs to be asking that question.  And as you will see below, one expert is now telling us that there are “almost certainly” cases in the UK already.  Will we soon see cases of the new mutant strain of Monkeypox popping up all over the world? Whenever I write about anything, there are people out there that get upset.  This seems to be particularly true when I write about diseases.  After what we have been through in recent years, there are a lot of people that never want to hear the word “pandemic” ever again.  I can definitely understand that.  But I am not here to write what people want to hear and make them feel all warm and fuzzy.  In Matthew 24, Jesus specifically told us that there would be multiple “pestilences” in the days just before His return.  Is Jesus a liar?  Of course not.  At this point, we simply do not know if Monkeypox is one of the “pestilences” that Jesus warned us about, but I think that it is worth watching because the World Health Organization is certainly making a big deal out of it. One day after this new mutant strain of Monkeypox was designated as a “public health emergency of international concern” by the World Health Organization, we received shocking news that a case had been confirmed in Sweden… Sweden on Thursday announced the first case outside Africa of the more dangerous variant of mpox, which the WHO has declared a global public health emergency. The country’s public health agency confirmed to AFP that it was the same strain of the virus that has surged in the Democratic Republic of Congo since September 2023, known as the Clade 1b subclade. I didn’t expect to see a case in Europe so soon. In fact, I was hoping that I wouldn’t be writing about Monkeypox for quite some time. But now that this new strain is on the loose, it could become an enormous global story. We are being told that the infected person in Sweden had recently been to an area in Africa where this new strain is spreading… The person was infected during a visit to “the part of Africa where there is a major outbreak of mpox clade I,” state epidemiologist Magnus Gisslen said in the statement. The patient “has received care,” Gisslen said. The agency added that Sweden “has a preparedness to diagnose, isolate and treat people with mpox safely.” Hopefully they were able to isolate this individual in time. But even if they did, the chapter of the World Health Organization in Europe is expecting that there will be more “imported cases of Clade 1 in the European region over the coming days and weeks”… WHO/Europe said it was actively engaging with Sweden’s health authorities on “how best to manage the first confirmed case of mpox Clade 1b”. It urged other countries to act quickly and transparently like Sweden, as there were likely to be further “imported cases of Clade 1 in the European region over the coming days and weeks”. And an expert in the UK says that he believes that there is “almost certainly” cases of this new strain in the UK right now… Meanwhile, Microbiologist, Professor Paul Hunter from the University of East Anglia told Times Radio the new variant of MPox is “almost certainly” in the UK already. When asked about the chances of the disease being in the UK already, he said: “Almost certainly. We saw with the 2022 pandemic of Mpox, with the clade 2, that once it gets into sexual networks, it can spread very rapidly around the world and it’s actually very difficult to control that spread. “So yeah, I think it’s not surprising that we’ve had a first case in Europe, and I think we’re going to see more. I think we will undoubtedly see cases in the UK over the coming weeks.” In 2022, Monkeypox was primarily being spread through sexual contact. But now the BBC is reporting that it can be spread by “talking or breathing close to another person”… Mpox, which was previously known as monkeypox, is transmitted through close contact, such as sex, skin-to-skin contact and talking or breathing close to another person. That is news to me. I had not heard that you can catch Monkeypox by talking to someone. Has something changed? There is still so much about this new strain that we do not know. When Monkeypox spread all over the globe in 2022, the death rate was very low. But the death rate for this new strain is much, much higher… The current strain causing concern among scientists is known as clade 1b and kills one in 20 adults. Its fatality rate in children is higher – one in 10. The virus is also believed to cause miscarriages in pregnant women. The Swedish public health agency said Clade 1 was likely to be linked to “a higher rise of a more severe course of disease and higher mortality”. Even if you don’t die, if you get infected it may be an experience that you will never forget for the rest of your life. When a 35-year-old charity worker named Harun Tulunay got infected, the pain that he experienced was unlike anything he had ever felt before… His test confirmed he had monkeypox, and only then did lesions often associated with monkeypox begin to appear on his hands, legs, and feet.”My throat was covered,” he said, explaining that the lesion on his nose was bigger and had become infected.“I was scared I would die alone in my hospital room,” he said. “I’d never been in so much pain in my life.” Another Monkeypox victim, 29-year-old Luke Brown, says that nothing that the doctors gave him even dented the pain… For the next few days, I was in excruciating pain—the worst pain of my life. I’ve been in a car wreck. I’ve had sinus surgery four times. I’ve had wisdom teeth out. I’ve had COVID-19 and mono. I’ve broken my hand, and the pain was nothing like this. Doctors put me on gabapentin [a medication used to treat pain from shingles], and I was also on ibuprofen and acetaminophen, but nothing even dented the pain. What these people went through is very real. You definitely do not want this disease. This new mutant strain has already killed hundreds of people in Africa, and health officials seem to believe that it is probably just a matter of time before it spreads all over the globe. Once again, I want to stress that I do not know if this is one of the “pestilences” that we should be watching for, but without a doubt we live at a time when great pestilences are coming. Just like everyone else, I am watching global events and trying to figure things out the best that I can. So let’s watch and see what happens.  Over time, it will become clear whether this new strain of Monkeypox is a major threat to us or not. But sticking our heads in the sand and ignoring global events as they spiral out of control isn’t going to do anyone any good.
