Time Team Archaeologists Discover Fragment Of Famous 6th Century Byzantine Bucket At Sutton Hoo

After a month of excavating, archaeologists with Time Team, a long-running British archaeology TV show, have discovered missing pieces of a 6th-century Byzantine bucket at Sutton Hoo in Suffolk, England. The fragments, along with other finds, reveal more about this site’s prehistoric past.Over 80 volunteers from across the world were taking part in the archaeological dig at Sutton Hoo over the last month. This site is famous across the world for its iconic Anglo-Saxon ship burial that was found under the soil in 1939. This discovery brought to light a burial chamber filled with valuable artifacts that belonged to a wealthy and significant figure who died in the early 7th century CE.This was a time before “England” as a unified entity existed. It was also extremely rare for ship burials to take place at this point, so it is likely the person there was of great significance. Some have even suggested it was King Raedwald, who ruled the kingdom of East Anglia at this time. Then, in 1986 (and then later in 2012), fragments of an ancient Byzantine bucket richly decorated with Greek inscriptions – known as the Bromeswell Bucket – were recovered in the same area, in a place called Garden Fields. The object was probably originally made in the eastern Mediterranean sometime in the 6th century, so it predates the ship burial by about a century. How it came to this part of the country is unknown, but archaeologists, conservators, and volunteers had hoped to find more of it during their recent excavations. And they were not disappointed.A piece of the Bromeswell Bucket discovered as part of the Time Team excavation at Sutton Hoo in June 2024.Image courtesy of David Brunetti, National Trust Images.Time Team used a range of advanced technology during the dig that was part of a new two-year research project that explored the early history of Sutton Hoo. They used a mix of geophysical surveys, including X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) which is a type of chemical and elemental analysis.  With this, the team was able to confirm that the newly discovered bucket fragments, as well as some already recovered and in storage, were indeed part of the Bromeswell Bucket.Ever since the bucket fragments were first discovered in the 1980s, researchers have spent painstaking hours cleaning, re-shaping, and then mounting them to show the item in its former glory.“Earlier geophysical surveys carried out by Time Team had identified some mysterious anomalies, which led us to the excavation of Garden Field,” Angus Wainwright, Regional Archaeologist for the National Trust, explained in a statement sent to IFLScience.“It’s hoped that this two-year research project will help us to learn more about the wider landscape at Sutton Hoo and the everyday lives of the people that lived there, perhaps even shedding some light on why the Royal Burial Ground was placed where it was. So, this find is a great step on that journey.”The Time Team excavation is part of a two-year research project that is seeking more information about the site's prehistoric history.Image courtesy of David Brunetti, National Trust Images. The examination of the fragments using Time Team's specialist technologies revealed that the bucket was previously damaged and then repaired. It is even possible that the metal was soldered back together again after that. This is just one discovery made during the month-long excavation. The rest will be revealed as part of a Time Team documentary on the excavation. Before then, the objects recovered from the dig will be sent for processing and cataloging before they return to Sutton Hoo.Time Team’s Series Producer and Creator, Tim Taylor, added that “[t]his year’s dig has been fantastic, and we’ve really been able to piece together part of a 40-year mystery and unearth a new chapter in the Sutton Hoo story.”

Fly Through The Pillars Of Creation In Stunning New 3D Visualization

When we look at things in astronomy, we see them projected onto the vault of heaven. Often we cannot appreciate that they are three-dimensional structures spanning mind-boggling distances. But combining observations at different wavelengths with cutting-edge visualization tools let us bridge that gap. The latest beautiful example focuses on the Pillars of Creation. These finger-like gas clouds are actually light-years-long structures. In them, stars are being born, something that the keen eye and infrared capabilities of JWST have been able to show. Infrared can pass through some of the gas and dust. While the Pillars are all part of the Eagle Nebula, located 6,500 light-years away, they are not in the apparent alignment we see them in. "By flying past and amongst the pillars, viewers experience their three-dimensional structure and see how they look different in the Hubble visible-light view versus the Webb infrared-light view," principal visualization scientist Frank Summers of the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) in Baltimore, who led the movie development team for NASA's Universe of Learning, said in a statement. "The contrast helps them understand why we have more than one space telescope to observe different aspects of the same object."       The gas and dust clouds are being eroded from within and without. Intense ultraviolet starlight from young stars is dispersing the gas and dust. Hubble and JWST have the capabilities to catch light from ultraviolet to mid-infrared to deliver incredible insights into this fascinating celestial object. "When we combine observations from NASA's space telescopes across different wavelengths of light, we broaden our understanding of the universe," added Mark Clampin, Astrophysics Division director at NASA Headquarters in Washington. "The Pillars of Creation region continues to offer us new insights that hone our understanding of how stars form. Now, with this new visualization, everyone can experience this rich, captivating landscape in a new way."Creating these visualizations in 3D required the building of a virtual model of the pillars, and NASA has made a 3D printable model of the Pillars of Creation available free of charge. This could be a nice thing to print for space lover, and it could be useful in astronomical discussions with people with visual impairments, similar to the work done by the team at Tactile Universe.

Sad Scarborough Suggests: Time For Dems To Tell Biden It's 'Over'

Joe Scarborough—finally—had to stop lying to himself and to his viewers. The man who recently had the chutzpah to absurdly claim that this is the "best Biden ever and f-you if you don't believe it," has been forced to confront the truth.  After Biden's disastrous debate performance, a shame-faced Scarborough [see screencap], analogizing the situation to when Barry Goldwater told Nixon during Watergate that it was "over" and he had to resign, suggested the time has come for Democrats to tell Biden he has to drop out.   Scarborough made another devastating analogy, asking—if Biden were the CEO of a Fortune 500 company and turned in a performance like last night's—whether he would be kept on in his position.  Rhetorical question, of course. The need to pull the plug on Biden is so urgent, suggested Scarborough, that he disagreed with the view of David Plouffe, Obama's former campaign manager, that Dems should wait a few days before making a final decision.  Scarborough said he fears Trump will be the next president "unless things change." Translation: Scarborough wants Pelosi, Schumer, Clyburn -- and why not Joe himself! -- to hustle over to the White House, or wherever Biden is hiding out and licking his wounds, and tell him he needs to go—STAT! Macho Joe Scarborough's big [some might say, fragile] ego was also on display. He twice bragged that he would debate anyone on the subject of Biden's effectiveness in office.  And not only would Scarborough "win" that debate, he vowed that he would "destroy" his opponent.  Scarborough claimed he'd prove that Biden's time in office has been an "unqualified success." Disgraceful Afghanistan withdrawal, porous southern border, pain at the pump and supermarket, hello? Perhaps the most telling moment came when Scarborough admitted that he has "had no idea" why the race is so close, but "we saw last night why this race has been close." In other words, Scarborough has been oblivious to what has been obvious to the great majority of Americans. Last night, Scarborough finally saw the—dim—light that is Joe Biden.  Mika Brzezinski, Biden Bitter-Ender Whereas Scarborough clearly wants to "get out the hook" for Biden, Mika Brzezinski is not, to mix metaphors, ready to throw in the towel. Despite admitting that Biden had a "terrible" night, Mika said: "As the night was over, and I was hearing you on the phone and all our phones were exploding, I just had this gut feeling that I'm not ready to give up on Joe Biden. Not even close . . . Watching what happened last night, again, it was terrible. It was terrible. There's no way to spin it. I still wonder what he's going to look like in a week. I wonder if he was sick. He came out on the stage, and I thought something was wrong.  "I still believe he is the best choice for this country, even with that performance last night." Here's the transcript. MSNBC Morning Joe 6/28/24 6:00 am EDT JOE BIDEN: What I'm going to do is fix the taxes. For example, we have a thousand trillionaires in America, I mean billionaires in America. And what's happening? We're in a situation where they, in fact, pay 8.2% in taxes. If they just paid 24%, 25%, either one of those numbers, then they'd raise $500 million -- billion dollars, I should say, in a ten-year period.  We'd be able to wipe out his debt. We'd be able to help make sure all those things we need to do, child care, elder care, making sure that we continue to strengthen our health care system, making sure that we're able to make every single, solitary person eligible for what I've been able to do with the, uh, with, with, with the Covid -- excuse me, um, with dealing with everything we have to do -- uh, uh, look, if -- we finally beat Medicare. . . .  JOE SCARBOROUGH: Well, I think I should start by saying, without any apologies, that I love Joe Biden, and Jill, and I will gladly debate anybody any time any place, any where, over the issue of whether Joe Biden has been the most effective president . . . His presidency has been an unqualified success. If, however, you believe as do I, and as do so many people who watch this program, and who, um, fear just how dark of a place a second Donald Trump term will take America, then I think it is critical that we ask the same questions about this man I love, respect, and whose, whose public service in saving this country from Donald Trump over the last 3 1/2 years I honor and always will. I think we have to ask the same questions of him that we have asked of Donald Trump since 2016. And that is, if he were CEO, and he turned in a performance like that, would any corporation in America, any Fortune 500 corporation in America, keep him on as CEO?  If this were Donald Trump, time and time again, we talked about the Goldwater, where is the Barry Goldwater, to walk over and tell Richard Nixon it was over. To tell Donald Trump it was over. And now the question is, do Democrats need to do the same thing of Joe Biden? I mean, these are hard questions. But the fact is, friends, failure is just not an option. In 2024, failure is not an option. So who I love, who I respect, who I revere for their work and their duty to service over their lifetime really is not relevant. It's not relevant for any of us. It's not relevant for Democratic leaders. It's not relevant for anyone. The question is, can -- we know Joe Biden can govern. And again, I'll debate that issue with anyone, and I will win. I will destroy anybody that wants to debate Joe Biden's record over the past 3 1/2 years. He can run the White House. He can run the country effectively despite the barrage of lies that constantly come at him, like Donald Trump's lies last night. But can he run for president in 2024? Donald Trump lied. Over and over and over and over again. And Joe Biden couldn't respond to any of those lies. In fact, as the New York Times said, he spent much of the night with his mouth agape and his eyes darting back and forth. He couldn't fact check anything Donald Trump said. An not only that, he missed one layup after another after another. . . . David Plouffe, I have such great respect for David Plouffe. He said we need to wait three or four days, because Donald Trump really turned off swing voters in, in a lot of focus groups once they saw him again. And that makes a lot of sense. But the door was open so many times. This race should not be close. We've been asking, why is this race close? We have no idea why this race is close. We saw last night why this race has been close.  And why I fear Donald Trump will be the next President of the United States unless things change.  And I will say, Mika, the one thing that I know that you believe, it may have been because he was sick. And I'm open to that fact. Because I'll just say, as I've said on the show, I spent three hours with this man, maybe, back in March. Three hours. Cogent, on top of the issues, on top of every issue around the world. And last night, he simply was not, on the biggest debate stage ever.  And I think what surprised me, and what surprised a lot of people very close to Joe Biden, is the fact that this man always rises to the occasion.  And last night was, sadly for him, and I believe for Democrats and his country, and, again, if you believe what's at stake in this election is what we believe is at stake, and I'll even use the word, tragically, tragically did not rise to the occasion last night.   BRZEZINSKI: Okay. As you can see, you won't see us spinning here on Morning Joe at all. [!] But let me tell you what I believe and then we'll go to Willie. But Biden had a terrible night. He could not land a thought, not even in the closing statement, which is something — that's the easiest part, to write down a few words, go through — go through the thoughts. And, while I validate the chaos and hysteria Democrats might be feeling, anybody who cares about democracy might be feeling, anybody who cares about women's rights and our safety and our lives might be feeling, totally understand that. At the same time, as the night was over, I was hearing you on the phone and all our phones were exploding, I just had this gut feeling that I'm not ready to give up on Joe Biden. Not even close. Joe Biden has lost more in his life than he has won in every way, especially politically. This man has lost and lost, and — and the only time he wins is when it matters. And that is we have proof of that. He has lost in personal ways. He has lost and hit rock bottom in every way possible, and every time, he comes back fighting. So, for me, watching what happened last night, again, it was terrible. It was terrible. There's no way to spin it. I still wonder what he's going to look like in a week. I wonder if he was sick. He came out on the stage, and I thought something was wrong. I still believe he is the best choice for this country, even with that performance last night because he was standing next to a man who represents fascism, who doesn't believe in this country, and would not even agree to the results of this election if they were free and fair to him.

POST-DEBATE HYSTERICS: Krugman Says Biden ‘Best President of My Adult Life,’ then Tells Him to Scram

POST-DEBATE HYSTERICS: Krugman Says Biden ‘Best President of My Adult Life,’ then Tells Him to Scram

The New York Times’s dry economic comedy specialist Paul Krugman gave new meaning to the term “doublespeak” when he drooled over President Joe Biden's supposed star-spangled awesomeness while telling him at the same time to make like a banana and split. Krugman joined a chorus of dumbstruck leftists in the media who were panicking over Biden’s bumbling debate performance against former President Donald Trump. “The Best President of My Adult Life Needs to Withdraw,” cried Krugman in his babbling June 28 contribution to The Times’s string of debate-lamenting columns. How Krugman could be adamant that “the best president” Biden should be a shoo-in for reelection while calling on him to scram is an exercise in logical incoherence. “Based on his policy record, he should be an overwhelming favorite for re-election. But he isn’t, and on Thursday night he failed to rise to the occasion when it really mattered,” Krugman whined. Talk about being "fanatically confused," eh Krugman? It is quite telling that Krugman’s self-admitted favorite president is one whose bonkers spending policies ushered in a 40-year high inflation crisis, an unsustainable cost of living, an awful housing market, and artificial growth bolstered by the government taking on trillions in new debt. As economist Kevin Cochrane observed in a June 16 op-ed, there is now an “additional expense of $9,000 per year for the average household” due to Bidenomics.  I really hated writing this https://t.co/dGm1tnlfYM — Paul Krugman (@paulkrugman) June 28, 2024 After haphazardly celebrating Biden’s “excellent job as president,” the delusional Krugman then told his superhero to “voluntarily” stand aside: Given where we are, I must very reluctantly join the chorus asking Biden to voluntarily step aside, with emphasis on the ‘voluntary’ aspect. Maybe some Biden loyalists will consider this a betrayal, given how much I have supported his policies, but I fear that we need to recognize reality, [emphasis added.] Recognize reality? Really? This is the same economist who tried to psych himself up on live television into believing that 40-year high inflation wasn’t “a crisis.” Oh, nevermind.  So who’ll step in to save the day, eh Krugman? The economist suggested Vice President Kamala Harris who he audaciously claimed was “quietly effective as vice president, promoting Biden’s policies.” Yeah, sure. Krugman concluded by taking a swipe at American voters as being potentially racist for not supporting her, “Maybe some American voters aren’t ready for a Black woman to be president.”  Keep it up, Krugman.  Conservatives are under attack. Contact The New York Times at 1 (800) 698-4637 and demand it distance itself from Krugman’s economic nonsense.

'Witchcraft and sorcery?' Dana White embraces Jiri Prochazka's claims that Alex Pereira uses spiritual forces to win

UFC President Dana White said that he loved the unique personalities of his fighters leading up to UFC 303. Particularly, fighters Jiri Prochazka and Alex Pereira, two spiritual light heavyweights who are currently at odds regarding ritualistic forces that Prochazka thinks are at play.During a series of interviews leading up to his championship fight, Prochazka claimed that Pereira has been "working with some shamans from his hometown and he believes in some spiritual help from them.""Everyone knows that he's doing these rituals," he stated. "Before the fight, everyone can feel that. What's around him and what's going on. So I think Alex can't fight without that."Pereira responded by saying, "Everybody has their own spirits; we're not just made of flesh and bone. If he did not find his or he doesn't believe, that's not my fault."'Witchcraft, black magic, it's just another reason that this fight is so f***ing awesome.'White was jokingly asked by a reporter backstage after the UFC 303 press conference whether or not he could test for dark forces."Do the commission test for witchcraft and sorcery?" reporter Oscar Willis from the Mac Life asked White."I love that s*** though. When Jiri found out about the fight, apparently he goes into a shed for three days. No water, no food, no nothing," White answered. "[He] prays, meditates, whatever he does. His coach went and banged on the door, told him this fight was available, and he said something to the effect of 'If this is what the universe wants.' So he's that dude!"White was referring to Prochazka posting about his own rituals online in late May 2024 when he said he was going to go several days without food or electricity while preparing to train for his next fight."3 daysNo LightNo foodPure FocusPure Training," Procházka said. The UFC president is no stranger to gimmick entrances, both in the UFC and now being part of TKO Group Holdings, which also owns the WWE. However, White said these two fighters aren't using gimmicks, this is actually who they really are. “So [Prochazka] sees him doing the Shaman stuff ... witchcraft, black magic, it's just another reason that this fight is so f***ing awesome. This is real, this isn't fabricated bulls*** when someone wants to come out with a gimmicky wrestling-type thing. This is who these two guys really f***ing are, man, this is what makes people really love [the UFC]. You know when someone is authentic, as opposed to some bulls*** f***ing wrestling s***.”White showed so much excitement for the event that he accepted another reporter's plea to add a second Fight of the Night bonus for UFC 303, which typically pays combatants between $50,000-$100,000 each.Like Blaze News?
