Country Music Moments 2024: John Moreland & Kyle Nix Scrap At Tulsa’s Mercury Lounge

For a guy who makes music as soft and touching as John Moreland, it turns out he's not the person you'd want to get into a bar fight with. Granted, you can take a peak at his skull tattoos and get an idea of the fire that burns inside of him, not to mention he was in a few punk and hardcore bands before his venture into country music and the fact that he's a pretty sizable man, but still, the man who wrote "Hang Me In The Tulsa County Stars" doesn't exactly jump off the page as a likely suspect to get into a bar fight, but that's exactly what happened earlier this year. https://www.instagram.com/p/DBZevfgS9Ik/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA== As 2024 comes to a close, we're taking a look back on some of the wildest moments in country music this year. First we looked at Morgan Wallen chucking a chair off Chief's rooftop bar in Nashville and now let's remember an altercation between two Red Dirt artists from back in August. An Oklahoma Throwdown At Tulsa's Mercury Lounge Admittedly, details about this alleged bar fight are sparse but we first found out about the incident in a series of Instagram stories posted by Moreland (some of which were later deleted) as well as through some people who were close to the situation. In the early morning hours of August 2nd, Moreland posted a video (which was deleted) in which he said: “Hey guys, little Texas country fun fact. If you ever happen to get in a fight with Kyle Nix, the tiny fiddle player from the Turnpike Troubadours…uh, and he pulls you out of your bar stool and starts kicking you in the head a few times… Don’t worry because he’s four feet tall, and it’s just going to feel like a f***ing third-grader is kicking you in the head. And then you can get up and start wailing on his face, and it’s all good. F*** that guy.” He then followed up that post with two more written messages: "F**k that whole band honestly…" And: "Except Hank." Kyle Nix has been the fiddle player for the Turnpike Troubadours since at least 2012, first playing on their Goodbye Normal Street record. During the group's multi-year hiatus, he started his own band called Kyle Nix & The 38's (a great group if you haven't given them a listen) but is certainly more well-known for his work with perhaps the greatest Red Dirt band of all-time. The Hank referenced is Hank Early, Turnpike's steel player. Whiskey Riff reached out to both Moreland and Nix's PR teams at the time but they didn't provide a comment, though a source close to the situation told us the two of them were talking at the bar when things almost suddenly went south. Allegedly, Moreland threw the first strike and that's when Nix pulled the stool out from under him, kicking off a bar fight. Rumor has it that they both held their own before it was broken up. The next day, Moreland addressed the situation, saying he regretted going after the entire band and only had a problem with Kyle, though he thought the whole thing was getting blown out of proportion: "Ok, even though this is kind of hilarious, I’d like to say I regret bringing anybody else in the band into my issue. I was just angry and being an a**hole, I’m sorry to those guys. My problem is with Kyle only. And honestly, it’s not even that much of a “problem,” we just got in a bar fight and I think he sucks now. I think that’s reasonable." Honestly, that's a pretty solid take. Who hasn't gotten into a shoving match or fight after a few too many drinks? Heck, I almost fought my own friends a few times, and while it's never a good thing, you can certainly understand that every now and again things get out of hand and the next day you have to send a few apology texts and smooth the situation over. While it didn't seem like Moreland and Nix were going to hit the road together anytime soon, nothing further came out of it and hopefully they've moved past it. Earlier in the year, Moreland shared a cover of Turnpike's "Diamonds & Gasoline" and I hope everyone can let bygones be bygones because a Turnpike Troubadours and John Moreland ticket is something I'd travel a good distance to see. Plus, them Okie boys gotta stick together, right? https://www.instagram.com/reel/C1kQrxBAPox/?utm_source=ig_embed&ig_rid=f6cf804c-f763-4334-a75f-87ff4db50bb5 Moreland also released his 7th studio album in April titled Visitor, which I'm betting will wind up on our Top 40 albums list coming out soon... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OeaW-Lndc9c

Kacey Musgraves Details Hilarious “First Love” Story At Fort Lauderdale Show: “He’s Here… With His Husband Tonight”

Ah, your first love. There is something magical about falling in love. You feel butterflies in your stomach each time you see them; you are in a constant state of bliss, and you start to picture a life together. While these feelings never get old, there is something even more special about identifying those feelings for the first time. First loves are some of the greatest but also the most heartbreaking for those of us who don't end up with their first love. If you're a very sentimental lady, you might wonder what your first love is up to and hope they are happy in their lives. But if you're like Kacey Musgraves, you never have to have those thoughts because they are not only your best friend now, but also swinging for the other team. During her recent run of shows, Kacey Musgraves has been saying some funny sh*t. After a fan not so funnily grabbed her as she was doing her segment where she walks through the crowd, he's made some hilarious statements about how that girl is lucky things did get "real East Texas" after the fact. While at least Musgraves can crack a joke about the rude fan, she made some jokes about her failed love life later in the show—especially her first love. During her recent show in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Musgraves shared with her fans that her first love, who happens to be one of her best friends, was in the audience. "I actually have one of my longest friends, one of my hometown friends, here tonight. And, uh, he was my first crush; he was my first love. And he is 100% here with his husband tonight." Talk about having what could have been heartbreak turn into something good. She's still best friends with her first love and got a funny story from it. Musgraves can definitely throw out good jokes on the fly, and she hilariously followed up the short story with a hilarious punchline that it's not the first time she's fallen in love with a man who is gay. "That's happened to me twice; I don't know what that means. But whatever, happy to be a beard I guess."  Only Kacey Musgraves can get away with saying something like that. After the story, she acted like it was no big deal and got right back into her setlist. Kacey Musgraves is iconic. @theonewithbea it be like that #kaceymusgraves #hardrocklive ♬ original sound - Bea Fans quickly came to the comments to relate to Kacey's story or share a joke. Check out a few of our favorites. "I’d die for this woman." "Let’s get one thing straight and two things gay." "She’s hilarious." "It happens frequently." "Same girl, same." "All baddies can relate to this." "Twice is crazy." "She's so me."  While you're here, fire up her new music video for "The Architect," which was released earlier this week: Sometimes I look in the mirrorAnd wish I could make a requestCould I pray it away? Am I shapeable clayOr is this as good as it gets? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UJ4LAE2HpCg&pp=ygUPa2FjZXkgbXVzZ3JhdmVz

Tanner Usrey Releases Somber Christmas Song, “26th Of December”

Tanner Usrey is laying down a Christmas song. Or his version of a Christmas song, as the Texas native dropped a rockin' holiday-inspired track today, "26th Of Christmas." "New songs out just in time for y’all’s seasonal depression. Hope y’all dig it!" https://twitter.com/TUsreymusic/status/1863812048288612484 While most holiday songs are jolly and bright, this year, we've seen a trend with artists writing about real feelings associated with the holidays, some of which are not that merry. Blackberry Smoke previously released "Come Go With Us," in which Charlie Starr recalls conversations with long-lost family members. The song is not joyful holiday memories like those Riley Green sings of in "Christmas To Me." Tanner Usrey has penned a brutally honest song about what the holidays look like for some folks. The Prosper, Texas native has a way with words and outlines that for some families, it's not always merry and bright around the holiday season. The melody has a Trans-Siberian Orchestra feel as the chimes of Christmas bells are met with a rock and roll base. The lyrics detail a broken family that was missing family members, left with bills to pay at the end of the holiday season, and questioning how to make it all work while keeping food on the table. While they put on an act while they have company over, making it seem like they have it all figured out, as soon as the last guest is out of the door, the curtain comes down, and the harsh reality of their situation sets in. "Johnny couldn't make it so mama's been crying Things ain't been right since daddy died Food on the table was all we had left My nerves are all fried and my head's all a mess It's the twenty-sixth of December, oh what am I gonna do There's no cash in the bank, there's no gas in the tank The bills on the table are due It's the twenty-sixth, twenty-sixth, twenty-sixth of December..." Usrey's vocals are spot on, as they always are, and he conveys that these are feelings he has experienced. You can hear the pain in his voice as he sings the tale of trying to figure out how to help his family best and how to get back on their feet. It's a sad reality of the holidays that it's not always joyful for some families. While this is not your traditional Christmas song, it is another stellar showcase of Tanner Usrey's talent. If you aren't already listening to him, now is the time to tune in. Fire it up. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ekskfz5oFg&themeRefresh=1
