After MRC Pressure, Newsweek Heavily Modifies ‘Trans’ Murderer Puff-Piece

Last week, Newsweek received heavy criticism online for publishing a tone-deaf, sympathetic piece about a convicted rapist and murderer, which conspicuously omitted several of the most gruesome details about his crimes. Yesterday, in response to an inquiry by NewsBusters, the magazine made a number of modifications to that piece, including adding several paragraphs which contained those previously-absent details. Context: The Cheshire Murders On July 23, 2007, Steven Hayes (the subject of the Newsweek story) and Joshua Komisarjevsky broke into the Cheshire, Connecticut home of Jennifer and William Petit. The accomplices forced Jennifer to withdraw $15,000 from a bank, after which Hayes raped her and strangled her to death. Komisarjevsky, meanwhile, raped their 11-year-old daughter Michaela. The pair then tied her and her 17-year-old sister Hayley to their beds, doused the house and gasoline, and burnt it down. The girls were found to have died of smoke inhalation. Dr. William Petit Jr., the only survivor, was brutally beaten with a baseball bat. For this series of atrocities, which came to be known as the “Cheshire Murders,” both Hayes and Komisarjevsky were sentenced to death, though their sentences were later reduced to life without the possibility of parole. Newsweek’s Initial Recounting Of Events Comes Up Woefully Short There’s an old joke that goes something like: A Democrat and a Republican are walking down the street when they spot a mugging victim lying in the road, savagely beaten. The Republican exclaims, “We’ve got to find the guy who did this!” to which the Democrat replies, “Yeah! Wherever he is, he needs our help!” If ever there were a living embodiment of the Democrat in that joke, it would be Joshua Rhett Miller, Newsweek’s chief investigative reporter and the author of the bizarre January 31 puff piece about Hayes, titled: “Exclusive: Transgender Connecticut Killer on Life in Prison: ‘Happy to Be Alive’.” The article’s tone was best exemplified by the following passage: “I hurt, so I hurt others,” she said. Had Lee [Hayes] accepted herself earlier, Hawke-Petit and her daughters may still be alive, she said. Blame-shifting, in other words. It wasn’t Hayes’s fault that he raped Jennifer Hawke-Petit, tied her daughters to their beds, and burnt their house down; it was society’s fault that his internal struggle over his identity forced him to do it! Miller’s nearly 2,000-word article painted Hayes as a sympathetic but troubled individual. He was laughably credulous of the 61-year-old convict’s assertion that he had been diagnosed with gender dysphoria “at the age of 16,” (which would have been in 1980 — 33 years before gender dysphoria was even added to the psychiatric Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders). The piece was very light on the gruesome details of Hayes’s crimes. For example, Miller failed to note that it was Hayes who had raped Jennifer Hawke-Petit, nor did he mention that Hayes and Komisarjevsky had tied the two Petit daughters to their beds before setting the house ablaze. Miller also excluded from his piece any details which might have demonstrated Hayes’s gleeful attitude at the time. Those include the series of photos that Hayes and Komisarjevsky took throughout the massacre, and the eager text messages that Hayes had sent his accomplice in the hours leading up to the attack: HAYES: I’m chomping [sic] at the bit to get started. Need a margarita soon. … HAYES: We still on? KOMISARJEVSKY: Yes HAYES: Soon? KOMISARJEVSKY: I’m putting [my] kid to bed. Hold your horses. HAYES: Dude the horses want to get loose. LOL NewsBusters Inquiry Yields Results On Monday, February 3, NewsBusters reached out to Newsweek with a number of questions about Miller’s piece, particularly inquiring why so many damning details were absent from it.  A few hours later, a spokesperson responded: “The story has been updated.” And indeed it had been. The article is now front-loaded with a myriad of formerly-missing facts about the 2007 atrocity, and several portions had been tweaked to the same effect. Take these modifications to the opening paragraph, for example: The idiotic blame-shifting portion is still in there, but at least the story now sufficiently conveys the extent of Hayes’s depravity. The magazine also was forced to address Hayes’s preposterous claim that he was diagnosed with gender dysphoria in 1980. At the end of the paragraph dealing with that assertion, they tacked on a sentence which read: “Newsweek was not independently able to verify the statements.” Given that the article was unchanged for several days before we reached out, and considering how soon it was updated following our inquiry, we’re taking credit for this one. It looks like Joshua Rhett Miller still has a job, but at least for now, we’ll take what we can get.

ABC Airs Maybe the WORST Ever Segment on DEI, Insists ‘Equity’ Equals ‘Merit-Based’

ABC Airs Maybe the WORST Ever Segment on DEI, Insists ‘Equity’ Equals ‘Merit-Based’

ABC’s Good Morning America aired Monday possibly the most deceitful and glossy depiction of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs as “merit-based,” a continuation of the civil rights movement “levelling the playing field,” and creating “equitable outcomes.” DEI does not, they insisted, have anything to do with hurting one group of people or giving prominence to those undeserving. As the great Christopher Rufo posted January 12 on X, the reality is “[m]eritocracy and DEI are fundamentally incompatible” with the former “judg[ing] individuals based on their accomplishments, while a DEI-based system judges individuals based on their ancestry.” Nonetheless, co-host Robin Roberts — who reportedly makes in the ballpark of $20 million — huffed that “federal agencies are banning any celebrations of” Black History Month and used that as a jumping off point to decry President Trump “curtailing” DEI.     This gave way to 20/20 co-host Deborah Roberts — wife of NBC’s Today co-host Al Roker and no relation to Robin — who started with this lament in a report that offered zero soundbites who oppose DEI: Hard to believe a small acronym has sparked such a fierce debate. DEI began during the civil rights movement, a way of levelling the playing field, creating equality in power structures. But somehow, the message has been lost, with some now seeing DEI as a symbol for unfair practices. Now, with the government taking that same stand, there’s some big efforts now to push back. Ah, so DEI — cultural communism — is actually about furthering equality. But notice how ABC and wokesters writ large often use equity and equality synonymously when it’s likely even many of them know the former is flattening outcomes while the latter offers — pun intended — a ladder to climb toward endless possibilities. Deborah Roberts had the gall to trumpet liberal boycotts, saying “[t]he sweeping rollback of DEI policies striking a nerve with consumers online” with “[s]ome expressing outrage that major retailers” like Target “are retreating from” DEI when its goals are just “helping highlight and strengthen minority groups by addressing long standing issues like the gender pay gap and expanding recruitment of candidates historically overlooked.” DEI expert Daniel Oppong lamented in a soundbite that it’s viewed as “polarizing,” but it was still true “that different people experience the world in different ways depending on the identities they hold” and thus DEI is necessary “to drive equitable outcomes.” She followed with this disingenuous swatting away of DEI’s pitfalls in which race is put at the center, not merit: “The impact of DEI stretching wide, from enrollment in higher education to hiring practices and while critics claim DEI includes a racial bias, pitting less qualified candidates against those more deserving, some business experts insist that’s not the case.”     Oppong followed with the kicker about DEI being “merit-based” and then an older, white, female liberal who actually compared DEI opponents to those against desegregating the American education system: OPPONG: In my mind, the idea that DE&I isn’t merit based or is anti-meritocracy, is fundamentally flawed. VALLOTKARP CONSULTING’s ANGELA VALLOT: America has been on a very, very long journey of trying to fulfill, you know, its ideals and it’s been a rocky road. We see the landmark Brown v. Board of education which ended legal segregation at public schools. So, this isn’t new. We’ve seen this throughout history, we make progress then there’s backlash. Deborah Roberts tried to end on a hopeful note for fellow corporate liberals, noting “big corporations like Delta Airlines, Apple, Costco, and Goldman Sachs...say they will continue to pursue [DEI] policies.” Prompted by Robin Roberts, Deborah said she saw “a woman wearing a shirt that said ‘earned not given’ which once again plays into that argument that these are given to people. It’s really about opportunities, not about giving.” Robin replied that viewers “have to remember” a world built with DEI is “still..merit-based” and thanked Deborah for “having people have a better understanding” as though this were a brainwashing. Our friends at The Federalist took a 20,000-foot view of DEI in February 2023, lambasting the left’s insidious strategy of being “intentionally vague” when their real goal is “sanctioned favoritism in the name of social justice” (click “expand’): Seemingly in unison, and with almost no debate, nearly every major American institution — including federal, state, and local governments, universities and public schools, hospitals, insurance, media and technology companies, and major retail brands — has agreed that the DEI infrastructure is essential to the nation’s proper functioning. (....) Diversity, equity, and inclusion is an intentionally vague term used to describe sanctioned favoritism in the name of social justice. Its Wikipedia entry indicates a lack of agreement on the definition, while Merriam-Webster.com and the Associated Press online style guide have no entry (the AP offers guidance on related terms).  Yet however defined, it’s clear DEI is now much more than an academic craze or corporate affectation. “It’s an industry in every sense of the word,” says Peter Schuck, professor emeritus of law at Yale. “My suspicion is that many of the offices don’t do what they say. But they’re hiring people, giving them titles and pretty good money. I don’t think they do nothing.”  (....) More recently, a spate of widely publicized police killings of unarmed African Americans has galvanized a growing belief, especially among progressives and especially since Donald Trump’s election, that America is an irredeemably racist nation. In 2020, in the wake of the Floyd murder and in advance of a fraught election, a moral panic set in. Having increased their ranks, social justice entrepreneurs and bureaucrats were poised to implement an ideological agenda and compound their institutional power.  Although no hard numbers exist on the exact size of the industry, the “DEIfication” of America is clear. From Rochester, New York, to San Diego, California, cash-strapped municipalities have found the funds to staff DEI offices. Startups and small companies that once relied on their own employees to promote an inclusive culture now feel compelled to hire diversity consultants and sensitivity trainers to set them straight. At Ohio State University, for example, the average DEI staff salary is $78,000, according to public information gathered by economist Mark J. Perry of the American Enterprise Institute — about $103,000 with fringe benefits. Not to be outdone by its Big Ten conference rival, the University of Michigan pays its diversity officers $94,000 on average — about $124,000 with benefits. Until he retired from the position last summer, Michigan’s chief diversity officer, Robert Sellers, was paid over $431,000 a year. His wife, Tabbye Chavous, now has the job, at the vice provost rank and a salary of $380,000.   For smaller organizations that cannot afford a full-time equity officer, there are other options for shoring up social justice bona fides — namely, working with any of the hundreds of DEI consulting agencies that have risen like mushrooms after a night’s rain, most of them led by “BIPOC” millennials. With some firms, the social justice goals are unmistakable. The Racial Equity Institute is “committed to the work of anti-racist transformation” and challenging “patterns of power” on behalf of big-name clients like the Harvard Business School, Ben & Jerry’s, and the American Civil Liberties Union. With others, the appeal has less to do with social change than exploring marketing opportunities and creating a “with-it” company culture, where progressive politics complement the office foosball tables and kombucha on tap. If it were all about endorsing “merit” as ABC claimed, then why have incidents like these popped up on a steady basis for years in which one’s First Amendment rights are trampled in the name of comfort for a few? Rufo’s life work has been in part exposing the DEI rot in American culture. In November 2021, he summarized a “ten-part investigative series on woke capital, exposing critical race theory training programs in America's Fortune 100 companies” with a few examples. They included AT&T teaching its employees that “racism is a uniquely white trait” and Walmart holding trainings for white employees to be told about their sins of “white supremacy thinking.” Thankfully, Walmart ended its DEI policies in November 2024. Ilhan Omar gives advice to illegal alien Somalis facing deportations: 'You are not obligated to answer their questions'

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) gave an interview where she appeared to instruct illegal immigrants to refrain from answering questions from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. In an interview conducted in late January, Omar answered questions surrounding the immigration status of Somalis and provided advice to her fellow countrymen who may be in the country illegally. In a video posted to Somali TV Minnesota's YouTube channel, Omar was asked, according to a translation, "What would you advise the many immigrants from Somalia who [are] afraid of being deported as criminals because they entered the country illegally?""I advise the Somalian people that if ICE attempts to question you, you are not obligated to answer their questions. Just state that you were advised by a lawyer not to answer questions," Omar responded, according to a translation of the video on X.She continued, "Disclosure of your name, immigration status, and the mode of entry is not mandatory. Learn the laws and prepare yourself and refrain from disclosing information that you would prefer them not to know."One of the reports framed Omar's presence at the event as her "hosting workshops" for illegal immigrants."Representative Ilhan Omar recently spoke to the media [and] advised people living in the country illegally," the report stated.A video posted the next day showed Omar wearing the same outfit as in the first video while presenting an award at the Norway House in Minneapolis on January 28, seemingly verifying the first video regarding illegal immigration was recorded in the same time frame.'This inhumane decision will have dangerous ripple effects.'Omar had recently complained about President Trump's executive order to suspend all refugee movement, calling it "beyond shameful.""The president has turned our back on those suffering from global catastrophe. This inhumane decision will have dangerous ripple effects around the world. Untold numbers of people around the world are hoping, praying, and counting on the United States to live up to the promise of being a country that welcomes them to a land of peace and opportunity," Omar said in a press release. The 42-year-old stated she is a refugee and that she and her family were given "a golden ticket to immigrate to the United States," but others in refugee camps around the world will now no longer get the same opportunity. She noted Trump's order directly affected "hundreds of family members" of her constituents and claimed the decision goes against "basic morality," implying it is the obligation of the United States to welcome "millions of children" from refugee camps around the world.Like Blaze News? The non-basketball explanation for Luka Dončić trade that everyone should be talking about

On Saturday night, the Dallas Mavericks sent shockwaves through the basketball world when it traded its lead guard, 25-year-old Luka Dončić, for the Los Angeles Lakers' 31-year-old Anthony Davis in a three-team deal. While fans literally took to the streets in protest, sports news outlets tried to make sense of what is certainly one of the most scandalous trades in the history of the league. Why would the Mavericks trade its generational talent who was anticipated to be the face of the team for the next decade? Why give up a five-time All-NBA Team superstar who helped lead the Mavs back to the NBA finals for the first time since 2011, was a triple-double threat every game, and led numerous statistical categories during the 2024 playoffs? According to reports, Luka did not request a trade and was blindsided by the news. Mavs General Manager Nico Harrison justified the move by saying “defense wins championships” and argued that acquiring Davis — “an All-NBA player who's also a first-team All-Defensive player” — will help the team where it “[needs] it the most — on the defensive end.” Some analysts say that the Mavericks had concerns about Dončić’s physical conditioning. Others speculate that the Mavs didn’t want to commit to the $345 million super max contract extension, which Dončić would have been eligible for this summer. Jason Whitlock, however, has an answer that you won’t hear anywhere else. “You cannot justify this from a basketball standpoint,” he says. You can perhaps justify the trade from a business perspective, though. Jason reads from a tweet thread posted by Texas lawyer Christopher Kratovil that offers the only logical explanation for the Dončić-Davis trade: “It makes more sense than anything else,” says Jason. To hear more of his commentary on Kratovil's theory, watch the clip above. Massachusetts Gov. Healey's tax-heavy budget targets candy, tobacco, and charitable deductions

Massachusetts Gov. Healey's tax-heavy budget targets candy, tobacco, and charitable deductions

Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey (D) unveiled her $62 billion fiscal year 2026 budget proposal, which contains numerous tax increases, including on candy and tobacco.Healey's proposed budget, introduced in January, amounts to a 7.4% increase in the state's overall spending compared to the previous year.'Governor Healey's priorities are clear: higher taxes and higher spending.'A new tax on candy is expected to generate $25 million for the state.Healey claimed that it "isn't about a new tax," arguing that "the purchase of candy does not align with our public health goals, especially for our youth.""What this is doing is simply saying, when you go to the grocery store, instead of having candy treated like a purchase of bread and eggs and milk, you know, essential groceries, that candy is now going to be treated in the same way as when you go to the bakery, the back of the grocery store, and pick up cupcakes for your kids," the governor stated. "We think that makes sense."Healey is also seeking to raise tobacco taxes and expand them to include synthetic nicotine products such as Zyn pouches. Additionally, Healey's proposed budget includes a limit on charitable donation deductions: a cap of $10,000 for joint filers and $5,000 for individual filers. The state estimates that the new limits could generate another $164 million. On Friday, Healey filed legislation allowing cities and towns to raise local taxes from 6% to 7% on hotel stays in "most communities" and .75% to 1% on meals. Municipalities could also implement a 5% surcharge on motor vehicle excise bills. Healey claimed that her Municipal Empowerment Act would allow elected officials to "avoid raising property taxes" on Massachusetts residents "who are already struggling with the high cost of housing.""Importantly, the ideas in this bill come directly from engagement with local officials across the state. They asked for improved fiscal stability, operational efficiency, and flexibility," the governor wrote.Boston Mayor Michelle Wu (D) approved of Healey's local tax increase options."Cities and towns depend on support from the commonwealth to diversify our revenues, build schools, and cut the red tape on buying goods and services from local businesses. Thank you to Gov. Healey and Lt. Gov. Driscoll for your ongoing partnership with the City of Boston and all our municipal governments," Wu stated.Paul Craney with the Massachusetts Fiscal Alliance told Blaze News that Healey is "relying on new taxes to fund her dramatic increase in state spending.""Essentially, the governor has a slew of tax hikes that will act like Healey tariffs for the taxpayers," Craney stated. "Among her targets are candy, charities, and local taxes.""Right before Valentine's Day, Healey wants to impose a 6.25% sales tax on all candies, which will cost Massachusetts taxpayers $25 million dollars every year," he continued. "The governor also wants to add a backdoor tax hike by capping deductions taxpayers can take when they give to Massachusetts charities. This backdoor tax hike will cost the taxpayers $164 million dollars a year. The governor's appetite for higher taxes doesn't stop there. She is also proposing allowing local towns and cities the ability to raise taxes on hotels and take-out food and a 5% increase on the annual vehicle tax.""Governor Healey's priorities are clear: higher taxes and higher spending," Craney declared.Anything else?On Monday, Healey torched a memo from President Donald Trump's U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy that directed the agency to prioritize programs in communities that have marriage and birth rates that exceed the national average.Healey stated, "I got to be honest, I've really tried here, but I do not see a connection.""We're a state that's very serious about ensuring that our residents and our businesses have access to the highest-quality public transit in the entire country," she added."It's concerning to governors around the country because people rely on transportation just like they rely on child care and infrastructure," Healey continued. "I'm focused on fixing roads and bridges and building out the kind of transit system that we need, and we need a federal partner who's rowing in that direction."According to 2022 data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Massachusetts had a fertility rate of 48.7 births per 1,000 women ages 15 to 44. Only five states had a lower fertility rate. The national average was 54.4 births per 1,000 women. From 2019 to 2022, Massachusetts had a marriage rate of 5.1 per 1,000 residents, matching New Jersey and Delaware. Only four other states reported lower marriage rates, while the national average was 6.2 marriages per 1,000 population.Like Blaze News? Tulsi Gabbard's confirmation advances to the Senate floor

The Senate Intelligence Committee voted to advance Tulsi Gabbard's nomination to serve as director of national intelligence on Tuesday. All nine Republicans on the committee voted to advance Gabbard's nomination, while all eight Democrats voted against her. Although she eventually secured unanimous support from the GOP, some senators were holdouts following her heated confirmation hearings last week.Republican Sens. Susan Collins of Maine and Todd Young of Indiana publicly committed to supporting Gabbard only in the 11th hour ahead of the committee vote. Gabbard was not the only nominee to find her footing today."I appreciate Tulsi Gabbard's engagement with me on a variety of issues to ensure that our intelligence professionals will be supported and policymakers will receive unbiased information under her leadership," Young said in a Tuesday post on X. "I have done what the Framers envisioned for senators to do: use the consultative process to seek firm commitments, in this case commitments that will advance our national security, which is my top priority as a former Marine Corps intelligence officer.""Having now secured these commitments, I will support Tulsi's nomination and look forward to working with her to protect our national security," Young added.Although Collins has acted as a roadblock to other nominees, most notably voting against Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, she did endorse Gabbard on Monday ahead of the vote. “After extensive consideration of her nomination, I will support Tulsi Gabbard to be the director of national intelligence,” said Collins in a statement. "As one of the principal authors of the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 that established this coordinating position, I understand the critical role the DNI plays in the Intelligence Community. The Office of the Director of National Intelligence, however, has become far larger than it was designed to be, and Ms. Gabbard shares my vision of returning the agency to its intended size." "In response to my questions during our discussion in my office and at the open hearing, as well as through her explanation at the closed hearing before the Senate Intelligence Committee, Ms. Gabbard addressed my concerns regarding her views on Edward Snowden," Collins added. "I look forward to working with Ms. Gabbard to strengthen our national security." Gabbard was not the only nominee to find her footing today. Robert F. Kennedy Jr., President Donald Trump's nominee to head the Department of Health and Human Services, narrowly advanced through the Senate Finance Committee Tuesday morning in a 14-13 party-line vote.
