How Much Does a Ham Radio Actually Cost?

How Much Does a Ham Radio Actually Cost?

If you’ve ever been inside an amateur or ham radio shack‚ basically an enthusiast setup inside their home‚ you might have been a little mesmerized: stacks of electronic components‚ dials‚ microphones‚ and all manner of electronic equipment. Chances are if you’ve got the bug‚ it bit you right then and there… the Baofeng gt 3 handheld ham radio So‚ you’ve done the research and you know that ham is a hobby you want to pursue. How much is a ham radio actually going to cost? A ham radio setup can cost you as little as $30 or as much as $3‚000 or more depending on the kind of radio‚ the quality‚ and additional equipment that you need. You can get started with a ham radio today cheaply‚ though! Let me tell you‚ I was probably as surprised as you are now when you saw just how affordable ham radio can actually be. A handheld‚ completely self-contained radio‚ even a good one‚ can cost you way less than $100‚ and you can get on the airwaves the same day. Naturally‚ there are many considerations that you should take into account‚ and a lot more to know if you want to make a wise choice with your initial investment. Lucky for you‚ I’m here to help point you in the right direction‚ so keep reading. Do I Need to Spend a Lot to Get Into Ham Radio? No! In fact‚ it’s a whole lot cheaper than you might have thought before you found this article. Now‚ if you want a fully kitted-out ham shack in your home with all the bells and whistles and a tall tower for your antenna‚ you might be dropping many thousands of dollars‚ but that’s an extreme case. If you’re willing to spend anywhere around $200 – $300‚ you can get a great fixed unit with everything that you need. But really‚ all you need is a basic handheld to start playing around with: $100 or even a lot less and you are in business. Baofeng makes some really affordable HAMs that most folks and preppers indeed like to use. Don’t Forget: You’ll Need Your License! Now‚ one small added expense you should keep in mind‚ and you can’t forget about‚ is the need for a license. That’s right; legally using a ham radio requires an amateur radio license from the FCC. You can take a written test or take it online‚ and assuming you pass and pay the fee‚ you’ll be ready to go after that‚ so make sure you prioritize it. And of course‚ if you want to study hard for the test so you can be sure that you will pass it‚ you might need some study guides‚ online tutoring‚ or something like that. Depending on how much info you already have and how hard you want to study‚ your license and study materials will run you anywhere between $35 and $100. But once you’ve got it‚ you’ve got it as long as you don’t let it expire. Complete‚ or Build Your Own? A big consideration for picking out your first ham radio is whether you want a completely self-contained unit like a handheld‚ or handy talky‚ or if you want to assemble a complete setup from the various components that are required. Handhelds are great if you are very impatient or if you want to stay strictly portable and on foot‚ and they can include everything needed‚ and that includes a battery‚ for as little as $30. If you want to assemble your set à la carte‚ you’ll need to buy each of the components‚ or most of them‚ from the list below‚ and the prices for those can vary significantly. Starter ham radio kits that include components pre-chosen for both price and compatibility are a very popular option that will give you some experience in hooking everything up and setting up your unit. Those kits usually run between $200 and $400… A Ham Radio Always Includes Several Components Assuming you aren’t buying a handheld which includes all of the following in a small form factor‚ your Ham Radio setup will need the following. I’ve included a basic price range to help give you an idea of what you can expect to spend based on your budget. Receiver/Transceiver: this is the heart and soul of the radio‚ responsible for receiving signals‚ a receiver‚ or sending and receiving signals‚ in the case of a transceiver. There are many‚ many brands and options out there‚ with some of the cheapest running right at $100 and the very best costing around $550 or even a lot more. Better models usually have more power‚ better controls‚ and options for functionality. Power Supply: your transceiver or receiver will need a power supply as most don’t include one. The power supply that you require is completely dependent upon how much power your set needs‚ so check the specifications before you buy. Expect to spend around $80 or a little less‚ though some beefy units can run more. Antenna: arguably the single most important part of a radio set. The antenna is responsible for receiving and sending radio signals‚ and picking the right one‚ and one that is of sufficient quality‚ is essential for good range and clear reception. Antennas usually run anywhere from $50 to as much as you want to spend depending on quality‚ type‚ and material. Tuner: a tuner is a technically optional but practically essential component of your ham radio set and is used to tune your antenna to the required impedance for optimal function. These start at around $90‚ but can cost a lot more. Check in with a seasoned mentor or customer support at a retailer to figure out which kind you need for your set. Case: depending on the model of receiver or transceiver you buy‚ and the type of power supply‚ it might or might not come pre-installed in a case or body. If you’re really buying a do-it-yourself kit‚ you’ll need to install these components in a case‚ which is likely included. Cases can cost as little as $20 bucks all the way up to $100 or even more depending on the type. Mic: the microphone is the part that you speak into to send your voice out over the airwaves. You can use a separate headset with integrated headphones or a standalone mic. Handy talkies have this built-in along with auxiliary jacks for connecting other communications equipment. Will run you anywhere from $20 to $300 or more‚ although the high end of this range is usually only for advanced communications headsets and commercial-grade microphones. Speaker: a speaker will produce received radio waves as sound‚ allowing you to hear the people you are talking to. Many sets have one built-in‚ but standalone speakers or headphones can once again go anywhere from $20 to hundreds of dollars. You don’t need an especially good speaker for functional sound. Cables‚ Connectors‚ and Misc.: unless your radio is completely self-contained like a handheld portable‚ you’re going to need a wide variety of cables‚ connectors‚ fuses‚ and more. A detailed overview of these components is an article by itself‚ but suffice it to say you’ll need anywhere from $50 to $75 or a little more depending on the specifics of your setup. Do not get bargain basement cables and connectors‚ though! Bad ones can seriously degrade your experience. If You Need a Tower‚ That Can Cost Big Bucks No‚ I’m not talking about a tower for a PC. I’m talking about an actual radio tower! If you live very far away from the people you’re trying to reach or you have a lot of obstructions in your way like tall buildings‚ hills‚ mountains‚ and the like‚ it is worth raising your antenna up as high as you can to improve reception and transmission. The best way to do that is with a tower‚ but that is going to cost some serious cash. The tower itself will set you back at least a couple of thousand dollars‚ and depending on the height you need it might go up to $10‚000. Likewise‚ in many jurisdictions‚ permitting to install such a tower on your property can be highly restrictive and expensive‚ further increasing costs. You must check before you build‚ though! If a tower is out of the question‚ consider having your antenna installed near the top of a tall tree – if it can be done so safely or installed on a mast that is placed on your roof. Baofeng radios are inexpensive‚ small‚ and capable of communicating over miles. Budget-Friendly Radio Rig If you want to get started with ham radio right now‚ and I mean right this very second‚ look no further than the Baofeng UV-5R. I know some seasoned ham ops are probably rolling their eyes‚ but these things are a great entry point into the skill set‚ and you can do a lot with them. This portable handheld has everything you need to receive and transmit on VHF and UHF frequencies‚ meaning it’s a perfect fit for someone starting out with their technician license. A Nice Mid-Priced Setup A high-quality handheld option is a significant step up from the Baofeng. The Yaesu FT-60R is durable‚ has great battery life‚ and excellent sensitivity compared to cheaper models. This works wonderfully for a close-to-home set‚ and it easily slips into a pocket or pouch when you need to head out the door. Expect to spend anywhere from $150 to $200‚ maybe a bit more depending on the retailer. All the Bells and Whistles If cost is no object or you want to be future-proofed for further expansion‚ ICOM’s IC-7300 is loaded to the gills with top-of-the-line features: real-time spectrum scope‚ a super user-friendly interface‚ and stupendous‚ best-in-class sound quality and clarity. It even has a touch screen and an automatic tuner built-in. It is uniformly excellent in every way‚ but you’re going to pay for it: sells for about $1‚300. Don’t Be Afraid to Jump in and Upgrade as You Go Now‚ if you looked at my recommendations above and immediately set off on an online shopping spree‚ you probably started feeling pretty deflated. There are so‚ so many choices out there it’s easy to get overwhelmed and start suffering from analysis paralysis. Don’t do that! Either buy a handheld like I said above or a complete kit that is ready to set up and go‚ and stick to your budget. Then get on the air and start having fun. It’s the very best way to learn‚ and you’ll find that you can always expand your setup as funds allow. The post How Much Does a Ham Radio Actually Cost? appeared first on Survival Sullivan.

10 Unique Prepper Supplies That Will Vanish After Panic

If you want a list of CRITICAL prepper supplies… START with my “best prepper supplies” video here. BUT that’s NOT what we’re talking about today. Today‚ I’m covering a bunch of supplies EVERYONE is overlooking. Prepper supplies you may have never considered stockpiling – until today. Many of these prepper supplies are in the “NICE TO HAVE” rather than “essential” category. But can help make life more comfortable during a long-term crisis . Want a free 78 item prepper checklist? Click here to instantly download this Complete Checklist PDF. No purchase necessary. NOTE: Here’s my video of the same information as you’ll read below: ↓ 10 Prepper Supplies EVERYONE Is Overlooking   1.  Pet Supplies (Food / Water) If you own pets‚ prepare with their needs in mind. Dogs and cats are the most popular pets‚ so stockpile extra kibble for them. You’ll also want to factor pets into your water supplies. How much? I’ll let you decide. Small cats and dogs tend to drink less than large breeds. And if you own livestock‚ put serious backup supplies or systems in place for them. Here’s some gear that may help prepare with your pets in mind. Airtight Pet Food Containers Doggie Bug Out Backpack 2. Contact Lens/ Spare Glasses If you wear corrective lenses‚ it’s wise to have backups. It’s foolish to assume new contacts or glasses will be available during a crisis. And what happens once the ones you currently wear run out or get damaged? You could be out of luck‚ and poor eyesight could become a major disadvantage. I couldn’t shoot the broad side of a barn without my contacts or glasses on. Driving a vehicle becomes dangerous – especially at night. Scouting for dangers is nearly impossible. I can’t tell if someone is a friend or foe from any reasonable distance until it’s too late. These are all MAJOR disadvantages during any emergency. If you primarily wear contacts‚ have lots of spares and contact solution/cleaner. You may also want to have a spare set of glasses as well. And if you primarily wear glasses‚ keeping a spare set in your prepper supplies is not a bad idea – just in case. 3. Coffee Coffee may seem like a luxury item‚ and you’d be right. Nobody NEEDS coffee to survive. But coffee can also help keep you stimulated and active. For example: What happens if you work with a survival coalition and put a military sleep schedule to patrol your bug-out location? Well‚ coffee will help you stay awake and alert during those long late nights of being a lookout. That’s just one extreme example where coffee is a survival advantage. Many folks‚ including myself‚ love a morning cup of coffee. It’s a morale booster. So coffee during a prolonged emergency might be a luxury worth adding to your prepper supplies today. 4. Favorite Candy Bars / Sweets This is another extreme luxury item. Sure‚ you CAN survive without your Snickers or Baby Ruth candy bars‚ but why? You don’t need to IF you plan ahead. If you store candy bars properly‚ they can last a very long time. Or you can buy some extra and start doing a bit of a rotation – always maintain a fresh supply at the ready. And hard candies can last dang-near-forever without any special storage instructions. Now‚ don’t go overboard. And realize in a worst-case scenario; you’ll want to ration these as much as possible. But having a small taste of a favorite treat can be a morale booster when the world is scary. Want a free 78 item prepper checklist? Click here to instantly download this Complete Checklist PDF. No purchase necessary. 5. Books / Puzzles / Board games / Toys With High REPLAY Value In a prolonged crisis‚ I’m talking about several months/years; there will be some VERY boring days. I’m talking about hunkering in your bug-out location‚ bunker‚ or home. Folks overlook this because we assume a massive about of fear and action in a crisis. We can’t imagine sitting around doing nothing. But if there was a nuclear explosion‚ you may need to hunker down for a month or 2 until the nuclear fallout cleared. Well‚ that’s a ton of mind-numbing “hunkering down” … You’ll need a way to pass the time without going nuts. Good books‚ puzzles‚ and board games can become moral boosters and a resilient way to enjoy downtime. I’m talking about ones you’ll enjoy playing several times if necessary. And if you have younger kids‚ toys with a TON of replay value are the most resilient – like LEGOS. Jack’s Bunker Book Picks: Endurance: Shackelton’s Incredible Voyage Stillness Is The Key Skin In The Game Antifragile Educated 6. Acoustic Musical Instruments (and spare parts) Now‚ if you play an acoustic instrument‚ you likely have one at your disposal. I’m talking about a guitar‚ a fiddle‚ a flute‚ a trumpet‚ a harmonica‚ etc. So you probably already have an instrument you can enjoy during the long boring hours. Plus‚ if you’re talented‚ others will enjoy hearing you play. This happened worldwide during the initial wave of COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns. But what if you don’t currently play? I suggest a long-term crisis could be a perfect time to learn… There’s no reason you can’t add a harmonica and some sheet music to your prepper supplies. It’s a perfect worst-case instrument to learn in a pinch. Plus‚ if you get good at it‚ it’s a delightful instrument to listen to‚ and it’s so easy to take anywhere if you must bug out.  I mean‚ it easily fits in a pocket! And if your instrument has parts that wear out (such as guitar strings)‚ you’ll also want a nice stash of those in your prepper supplies. 7. Lots Of Extra Gas Mask Filters Having a gas mask is great‚ but only if you have ample filters to go with it. A gas mask becomes a Silly Halloween Mask if you run out of filters. Now‚ I can’t tell you how many filters you should stockpile. There are too many variables‚ like the nature of the crisis‚ how often you’re forced to enter a dangerous zone‚ etc. But I’d rather have a few too many filters than not enough. Because if the air you breathe causes instant or premature death (viruses‚ nuclear fallout‚ chemical attacks‚ etc.)‚ you’ll want a healthy supply of filters. Recommendation: My favorite gas mask supplier is MIRA SAFETY. 8. Sewing Kit &; Supplies If your clothes tear‚ you might be unable to afford (or even get access to) new ones. So you should learn how to sew and stockpile a sewing kit and supplies. Now‚ I’m talking about old-school sewing by hand ONLY – NOT BY SEWING MACHINE. You can’t assume you’ll have access to enough power to run a modern-day sewing machine. Instead‚ focus on adding patches to holes in jeans‚ tears in a shirt‚ etc. It doesn’t need to look pretty in a crisis; you’re not trying to win any embroidery awards; it just needs to be functional. Want a free 78 item prepper checklist? Click here to instantly download this Complete Checklist PDF. No purchase necessary. 9. Contraceptives This one is highly dependent on your situation. But for some folks‚ having a backup supply of contraceptives is wise. Pregnancy may not be ideal for you during the early days of a crisis. So‚ I’m not going to go into extreme detail here… But for some folks‚ this could be a prepper supply you really wish you had AFTER a crisis hits but have thus far overlooked it. 10. Daily Vitamins In a crisis‚ you must assume you’ll not have unfettered access to a grocery store. Perhaps it’s too dangerous to go there‚ or it’s completely wiped out of goods. Either way‚ you don’t want to rely solely on survival foods to provide all of your nutritional needs. I highly recommend stocking up on some well-balanced daily vitamins. That way‚ you can keep your body healthy even if you’re forced into eating only rice and beans for days on end. Want a free 78 item prepper checklist? Click here to instantly download this Complete Checklist PDF. No purchase necessary. 5 Dangerous Prepper Supply Myths You Must Understand Myth #1: “You Need a Doomsday Warehouse” Sure‚ stockpiling supplies is a key part of prepping‚ but let’s not get carried away with the idea of hoarding so much gear that you need a warehouse to store it all. The truth is‚ quality always trumps quantity. It’s better to have a well-thought-out assortment of essential supplies than a mountain of random items gathering dust. Focus on versatile gear like multi-tools‚ water purifiers‚ and first aid kits that serve multiple purposes. Myth #2: “Canned Food Lasts Forever” While it’s true that canned foods have an impressive shelf life‚ they’re not invincible. All good things must come to an end‚ including your cherished canned beans. Check those expiration dates and rotate your stock regularly to ensure you’re consuming items before they turn into science experiments. Myth #3: “Guns Will Solve Everything” A reliable firearm can indeed be a valuable tool for self-defense in certain situations. However‚ the notion that a gun alone will guarantee your survival is a dangerous oversimplification. Skill‚ strategy‚ and a well-rounded approach to security are essential. Don’t forget to invest time in training‚ situational awareness‚ and alternative defense methods. Myth #4: “I Don’t Need to Learn Wilderness Skills – I Have Gear” Relying solely on your gear without honing wilderness skills is like having a toolbox with no idea how to use the tools. The best preppers understand that knowledge is power. Take the time to learn basic survival skills like starting a fire without matches‚ building a shelter‚ and identifying edible plants. Your gear should complement your skills‚ not substitute for them. Myth #5: “I Must Buy Everything at Once” It’s easy to fall into the trap of wanting to amass all your supplies in one fell swoop. But remember‚ prepping is a journey‚ not a race. Build your supplies gradually‚ focusing on one area at a time – water‚ food‚ shelter‚ security‚ and so on. This approach not only eases the financial burden but also allows for thoughtful consideration of each item’s usefulness and quality. Wrap Up If you’re serious about preparing‚ start working through this list of 10 OVERLOOKED prepper supplies. It’ll make you and your family much more resilient to future crises.
