Dem senator places 'blanket hold' on Trump's State Department nominees to protest USAID reorganization

Senator Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii) said he will place a "blanket hold" on President Donald Trump's State Department nominees to slow-walk their confirmations. On Monday, Schatz explained that he is stalling the president's nominations to protest Trump's and Elon Musk's desire to dissolve the United States Agency for International Development.'I will do maximal delays until this is resolved.'Musk's Department of Government Efficiency discovered wasteful, anti-American spending by USAID."As we dug into USAID, it became apparent that what we have here is not an apple with a worm in it, but we have, actually, just a ball of worms," Musk said. "It's hopeless. USAID is a ball of worms. There is no apple. And when there is no apple, you just gotta basically get rid of the whole thing."Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced on Monday that he is the acting director of USAID."One of the most common complaints you will get if you go to embassies around the world from State Department officials and ambassadors and the like is USAID is not only not cooperative — they undermine the work that we're doing in that country, they are supporting programs that upset the host government for whom we're trying to work with on a broader scale, and so forth," Rubio stated. On Monday, workers were locked out of the USAID building as the White House prepares a reorganization of the agency's activities.Democrats gathered outside the building to protest, claiming the action was "illegal."Schatz stated that he plans to retaliate against the Trump administration's decision by opposing senators' requests for "unanimous consent" to expedite the confirmation process of presidential nominees."I will vote no. I will do maximal delays until this is resolved," he told the Wall Street Journal. "You cannot wave a wand and eliminate a department established by federal law, so it will be reversed by a court."Schatz claimed that dissolving USAID would be "illegal" and make the country "less safe.""Donald Trump and Elon Musk can't just wish it away with a stroke of a pen — they need to pass a law," he said. "Until and unless this brazenly authoritarian action is reversed and USAID is functional again, I will be placing a blanket hold on all of the Trump administration's State Department nominees.""This is self-inflicted chaos of epic proportions that will have dangerous consequences all around the world," Schatz claimed.Schatz's hold will force Republican lawmakers to waste floor time to confirm Trump's nominees instead of fast-tracking them for a vote. While Democrats do not have enough votes on their own to block Trump's picks, they can drag out the process.Like Blaze News? Swamp starts draining itself as 20,000 deep-staters accept Trump buyout: Report

Back before his first term began eight years ago, President Donald Trump promised the American electorate that, once in office, he would work steadfastly to "drain the swamp" in Washington, D.C., ostensibly referencing the tens of thousands of nameless, faceless federal bureaucrats who have no direct accountability to the American people. Now in February 2025, it appears the swamp has begun draining itself after Trump offered a buyout that some of them seemingly couldn't refuse.According to a scoop from Axios, as of Tuesday, some 20,000 federal workers have already accepted the buyout, which was officially pitched a week ago. Those 20,000 employees represent approximately 1% of the federal workforce, a significant number, to be sure, but a far cry from the 5% to 10% of the workforce the Trump administration had originally projected.'Whichever path you choose, we thank you for your service to the United States of America.'The deadline to accept the buyout is still two days away, so officials are still expecting the number of resignations to increase, especially in light of the major shakeup at the U.S. Agency for International Development. "We expect more to come," one official told Axios. "If you see what's happening at USAID, it's just one piece of the puzzle."The terms of the buyout are indeed enticing. Those who accept it retain all existing benefits until the end of September without having to return to the office, so long as they complete "reasonable and customary tasks and processes to facilitate" their exit. The process of accepting the offer is also remarkably easy. All that the people who wish to resign need to do is reply to the offer on their official government email account, type "resign" in the subject line, and hit "send."By contrast, those who choose to stay must commit to working at the office five days a week and to upholding a culture based on merit rather than, say, seniority or identity. Those who remain also still run the risk of losing their positions to "restructurings, realignments, and reductions in force," though the Trump administration has pledged to honor all "relevant collective-bargaining agreements" during the restructuring process."Whichever path you choose, we thank you for your service to the United States of America," the buyout offer stated.Axios further noted that on average, the annual attrition rate of the federal workforce is about 6%. So some of those who accepted the buyout may have left anyway.Like Blaze News? Bypass the censors, sign up for our newsletters, and get stories like this direct to your inbox. Sign up here!

'Ridiculous theory': NFL commissioner Roger Goodell downplays claims the league is helping Patrick Mahomes

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell denied the idea that the league favors Kansas Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and implied it shouldn't be taken seriously. The commissioner was asked during a pre-Super Bowl press conference about the "public perception" that NFL officials have favored the Chiefs.Goodell's first reaction was that the accusation reminded him of the theory that the NFL was scripted."Well, this sort of reminds me a little bit of the script, right, that I write a script, and I have the script for the entire season," Goodell began. The commissioner then alluded to the idea that media members will push the idea but never take ownership of it."I think from a lot of those theories are things that happen in social media, and they get a new life. As you say, it's not your theory," Goodell said to the reporter, who prefaced his question by saying he didn't think the NFL was playing favorites.Goodell continued, "It's out there. Nobody wants it to be their theory. And so I understand it. I think it reflects a lot of the fans' passion, and I think it also is a reminder for us how important officiating is."After praising his referees for adhering to the "highest possible standards," Goodell called the favoritism "a ridiculous theory," warning "anyone who might take it seriously." — (@) 'I think that talks about the competitiveness of our game ...'The commissioner didn't necessarily help his argument when he later boasted that 11 of the Chiefs' 15 wins in the 2024 regular season were "within one score," which would not serve as evidence that officiating was not catered to them. "I think that talks about the competitiveness of our game and the importance of how we officiate it but also the competitiveness of how we play it," the 65-year-old added.Super Bowl MVP Julian Edelman recently blamed the Chiefs' opponents for their losses, not officiating. On "The Jim Rome Show," Edelman was asked if the claims and complaints reminded him of criticism the Patriots received about Tom Brady receiving favoritism from referees."Do referees drop footballs? Do referees go for fourth downs over and over with the same play and get stuffed? Do they throw interceptions?" Edelman asked. The former wide receiver also seemingly called out the Buffalo Bills for their AFC championship loss to the Chiefs, in which they were stopped multiple times when repeating the same play."The refs aren't involved in when you throw interceptions, when you fumble the ball, when you jump offsides, when you don't convert third down or fourth down, or third and fourth down for short, four times. They can't control that," he concluded.Like Blaze News? Bypass the censors, sign up for our newsletters, and get stories like this direct to your inbox. Sign up here!
