David Lee Roth releases cover for Tommy Tutone’s hit “867-5309/Jenny”

David Lee Roth releases cover for Tommy Tutone’s hit “867-5309/Jenny”

During the past years the original Van Halen vocalist David Lee Roth has been releasing many new songs that were recorded recently or previously unreleased. His most recent one is really a song that probably no one could guess that he would one day cover it. It's a cover of Tommy Tutone's 1981 hit single "867-5309/Jenny". However, he used a different title, naming "Jenny Jenny (That telephone song)". Although it's really a faithful cover to the original song, it has an acoustic vibe. Hear the David Lee Roth cover for Tommy Tutone's "867-5309/Jenny" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9noyV53BuD8 The song Formed in California back in 1978 the band Tommy Tutone released their self-titled debut album two years later in 1980 but their success really came with the song “867-5309/Jenny” from their second album “Tommy Tutone 2” released in 1981. It became their most famous song by far, which makes the band often be called a “one hit wonder” since it peaked at number 4 on the United States Billboard Hot 100 and they never were able to reproduce that success with their other releases. Curiously, the song was written by a songwriter called Alex Call with the help of Jim Keller, guitarist of Tommy Tutone. But after 40 years of existence that song continues to be played around the world and make people curious about what is the origin of that specific phone number 867-5309. There are many myths around the origin of that number and some say that Jenny really existed and the number was on a wall but none of that is true. It was something invented by the person in charge for the public relations of the record company who told the band to tell a story like that. It was the songwriter Alex Call who came up with most of the song, including the number. He was sitting in his backyard one day trying to write a song when that number came up. You can read more about that story in this article. The post David Lee Roth releases cover for Tommy Tutone’s hit “867-5309/Jenny” appeared first on Rock And Roll Garage.

Hear the new Deep Purple song "Pictures of You" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G8w638t_MtU Lyrics "I’m pickin’ up a new vibe It’s nothing too much Antenna says I may be losing my touch I’m hanging round a bee-hive Feeling the buzz It’s hard to explain let’s say it’s simply because I like the rough Much more than these smooth… …Pictures of you They’re too good to be true So I’m trusting my eyes again These cameras never lie Giving up a day job Working at night You’re looking so fine in that cool amber light You’re running with a new mob Working the crowd The final result? Oh should make you proud Forgive me asking, I can’t help saying But what you got there, the price you’re paying In the light of day, what do I see For what it’s worth, seems no better to me These pictures of you Are too good to be true I’m using my eyes again These cameras never lie You got it, you’re down and dirty You’re made for pleasure The frame is frozen, you watch the birdie You’re made to measure Aaah, look at you now Ooh, stand out in a crowd The real you showing up on your face Your hair is blowing all over the place Smooth pictures of you Are too good to be true So I’m trusting my eyes again These cameras never lie"The post Hear the new Deep Purple song “Pictures of You” appeared first on Rock And Roll Garage.

Bassist Mark Evans recalls what Bon Scott was like as a person

The Australian bassist Mark Evans was a member of AC/DC from March 1975 to June 1977, when he was fired by the band. He appeared on the studio albums "T.N.T.", "High Voltage", "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap" and "Let There Be Rock". So he was lucky enough to have played for a few years with Angus, Malcolm, Phil Rudd and the late legendary vocalist Bon Scott. In an interview with Spain's Rock FM (Transcribed by Ultimate Guitar), he recalled what Scott was like as a person. Bassist Mark Evans recalls what Bon Scott was like as a person "Bon was a great guy. He was a very warm, very generous man. A gentleman. But when I joined the band, I was 19, and he was 29. It was really strange, because I thought, 'What am I doing, working in a band with a guy so old?' We used to call him, 'The Old Man'. It seems crazy now, right? But no, Bon was a great guy. He was a great frontman, and he just had a really big heart." "He cared a lot for people around him. I only just wish he had cared about himself as much as he cared about other people. It was a big loss, but he was a good fellow, great frontman. I still miss him very much these days," Mark Evans said. Bon Scott tragically passed away in 1980 at the age of 33 and his final album with the band was "Highway To Hell", released one year before. Evans was replaced in AC/DC by Cliff Williams who remained as the band's bassist until recently when they announced Chris Chaney as the new touring bass player. Since his departure from AC/DC, Evans has been a member of many bands and since 2017 is part of the Australian group Rose Tattoo. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3f2g4RMfhS0&pp=ygURbGV0IHRoZXJlIGJlIHJvY2s%3DThe post Bassist Mark Evans recalls what Bon Scott was like as a person appeared first on Rock And Roll Garage.

Carmine Appice says that Black Sabbath is not a Heavy Metal band

Carmine Appice says that Black Sabbath is not a Heavy Metal band

Well, the story goes that Black Sabbath was the band that created Heavy Metal music with the release of their groundbreaking self-titled debut album in 1970. But for the legendary drummer Carmine Appice, who worked with Vanilla Fudge, Ozzy Osbourne, Jeff Beck, Rod Stewart and more, they are actually a “Heavy Hard Rock” band. He said that in an interview with W4CY radio (Transcribed by Blabbermouth) Carmine Appice explains why he believes that Black Sabbath is not a Heavy Metal band "Even Slayer. They weren't that buzzsaw guitar back in the day. All those bands. Biohazard. I mean, all those bands — they were hard rock. And then as the, per se, metal movement moved on and everybody started having that buzzsaw, Metallica kind of buzzsaw guitars and fast bass drums like Lars [Ulrich]. And I think that's where it all started. All that stuff that's going on today started with Metallica — in my eyes.” “ I mean, I [could] be wrong. But for me, and all the stuff before that, including Black Sabbath, was hard rock. I mean, Black Sabbath was just, to me, like another Led Zeppelin coming out of Birmingham. I mean, we played gigs with Black Sabbath back in the day when they first came out with Cactus. We were rock blues and so was Black Sabbath.” “ I mean, 'Paranoid', to me, back in the day was like a 'Communication Breakdown' kind of thing. And then as it went along and went along, I mean, their sound got thicker, but it still didn't have that buzzsaw sound. That's my own opinion. Everybody says Sabbath is heavy — they're heavy hard rock,” Carmine Appice said. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LplPi2CxNHIThe post Carmine Appice says that Black Sabbath is not a Heavy Metal band appeared first on Rock And Roll Garage.

The album that Dave Grohl said is his favorite of all time

The singer and multi-instrumentalist Dave Grohl is certainly a versatile musician and one of the few ones who were able to be successful more than once. Because he first achieved fame as the drummer for Nirvana and then, after the band tragically came to an end, he formed his own group, Foo Fighters, which became one of the most successful and praised groups from the past decades. But this time he occupied mainly the vocals and the guitar in the band, although he did play the drums many times in concerts and records. Although his sound was more focused first on Grunge and then on modern Rock and Roll, he always had a really broad musical taste. That can be seen in the album that he once said is his favorite of all time. The album that Dave Grohl said is his favorite of all time The album that Grohl told British GQ back in 2018 that was his favorite is actually a movie soundtrack. The Foo Fighters leader chose the soundtrack of the movie "Paris, Texas" released in 1984 as his favorite album of all time. It was scored by the praised American guitarist Ry Cooder, who is best known for his slide guitar work. Grohl first explained why he loves the soundtrack composed by Ry Cooder after revealing that Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page is one of his favorite soloists alongside Cooder. "Jimmy Page, I think, is my favorite soloist. I love the way that he was always teetering on the edge of total chaos. But he knew how to place every note in a space that really drew emotion." "So when you watch a movie like 'The Song Remains the Same,' or any live footage from 1971 or 1973, or 1975, and even the earlier stuff, he’s just going for it. It's that sort of fearlessness that I respect most in musicians. Not perfection or any sort of clean technical proficiency. He continued: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X6ymVaq3Fqk&pp=ygUWcGFyaXMgdGV4YXMgc291bmR0cmFjaw%3D%3D "I really like to see musicians right on the edge of falling apart. He did that in the most beautiful way. That being said, there is an instrumental record by an American legend named Ry Cooder. He scored a movie called 'Paris, Texas' in the '80s. The soundtrack to that film is my favorite album of all time." "It sort of paints this sort of barren desert landscape. But he does it with a slide guitar. It's just so simple and emotive, and amazing. So one of those two," Dave Grohl said. Cooder released many solo studio albums and worked as session musician with many famous artists. Some of them are Neil Young, Rolling Stones, The Everly Brothers, Doobie Brothers, Eric Clapton and John Lee Hooker. He also scored many other famous movies like "Streets Of Fire" (1984), "Crossroads" (1986), "Last Man Standing" (1996) and "Primary Colors" (1998). He said that he discovered that album touring in Italy back in 1988 From 1986 to 1990, Dave Grohl was the drummer of the American Hardcore Punk band Scream. As he recalled in an interview with CN Traveller in 2020, it was when touring in Italy with the band that he discovered the "Paris, Texas" soundtrack album. "I’ve got a really good one. The number one of all time is Ry Cooder’s Paris, Texas soundtrack. I remember discovering that record while I was on tour in Italy in 1988, driving along the coast. I recommend it to anybody who has a long car or train ride. Because it will soothe your soul,’" Dave Grohl said. Ry Cooder's most recent solo album is "The Prodigal Son" released in 2018.The post The album that Dave Grohl said is his favorite of all time appeared first on Rock And Roll Garage.
