This German Town Carefully Reconstructed a 5,500-Year-Old Monument Lifting 13 Tons of Stone

People find time to volunteer for all manner of projects, and in Germany, a community recently got together to pitch in for the sake of their local, 5,500-year history. The Neolithic burial site of Küsterberg is located in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt’s Haldensleben forest, and dates back to the time of Stonehenge. It was […] The post This German Town Carefully Reconstructed a 5,500-Year-Old Monument Lifting 13 Tons of Stone appeared first on Good News Network.

Five Horror Books That Will Make You Afraid of the Dark

Books Five Books Five Horror Books That Will Make You Afraid of the Dark From haunted mansions to spooky mines to subway tunnels, the darkness is all-encompassing… By Lorna Wallace | Published on May 29, 2025 Photo by David Tomaseti [via Unsplash] Comment 0 Share New Share Photo by David Tomaseti [via Unsplash] Many kids go through a phase of being absolutely terrified of the dark (and of the monsters the darkness could be concealing). I certainly did—though as an adult, I love it when a horror story can reignite that childhood nyctophobia and have me hightailing it out of a room once I’ve turned the light off. There are many books that have been described as “so scary you’ll sleep with the lights on” but it’s not often that the horror actually revolves around darkness itself. So here are five books that are scary precisely because they’re set—at least partially—in the dark. The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson The Haunting of Hill House makes this list for one scene alone, but I don’t want to spoil it for anyone who hasn’t read the book because it’s essentially a jump scare. Here’s my spoiler-free pitch: Dr. John Montague wants to scientifically document the supernatural, so he rents the allegedly haunted Hill House for the summer and invites a few carefully chosen guests to stay with him, hoping that their presence will draw out the ghosts. Jackson’s writing is at once captivating and chilling—you’ll see what I mean if you read just the first paragraph. A sense of foreboding permeates every page, with Hill House itself looming over its inhabitants like an ominous presence. Added to that are the characters, whose personalities and developing relationships are just as fascinating to delve into as the creepy goings-on around the house. [Spoiler warning.] I bet anyone who has read Hill House knows the exact scene I’m thinking of, in terms of terrifying darkness. Eleanor is woken up in a pitch-dark bedroom—despite being sure the lights had been left on—by some unsettling noises. Throughout the scary auditory experience, she clutches Theodora’s hand for comfort. But when the lights come back on, she realizes that Theo was actually fast asleep across the room, which raises the shiver-inducing question—whose hand was she holding? Dark Matter by Michelle Paver Set in 1937 and told via a series of diary entries, Dark Matter is positively blanketed in darkness. This is thanks to main character Jack taking a job as a radio operator for a meteorological team on Svalbard—a remote Norwegian archipelago in the Arctic circle where the sun doesn’t rise at all for a few months during the winter. The sailors who drop Jack and his colleagues off seem uneasy about their chosen location on the coast, but everything is fine to begin with. The isolated cabin is cozy and the sled dogs bring a joyful energy to the camp (as dogs tend to do!). But then a series of mishaps lead to Jack having to spend some time alone at the site, and he learns just how scary polar night can be. Dark Matter is an atmospheric slow burn of a ghost story that is as much about Jack’s declining mental state as it is about the lurking specter. Fear of the dark can be a very powerful thing—especially when you’re the only person for miles around and the sun isn’t going to rise anytime soon. The Underdwelling by Tim Curran The Underdwelling largely takes place in the depths of a mine—a perfect setting for a story to inspire a fear of the dark. Main character Boyd comes from a family of miners and isn’t overly fazed by the hard, dirty, and dangerous work. Looking to prove himself in this new job and earn some extra cash for his family—he’s got a baby on the way—he agrees to work the graveyard shift down in the deepest level of the mine. While Boyd is toiling away carving out a new tunnel, a shaft unexpectedly opens up, plunging straight down and granting access to a mysterious—and very creepy—cave that has been sealed shut for millions of years. Boyd joins the exploratory team, but it’s a decision he’ll soon come to regret. In this novella, Curran crafts an atmosphere so thick with claustrophobia and nyctophobia that no amount of torches or companions could dispel the fear (not that either are any use in fighting off what’s down there, anyway). Last Days by Adam Nevill Kyle Freeman is a down-on-his-luck documentarian, but Last Days opens just as a golden opportunity drops into his lap. He’s hired to make an investigative documentary about the Temple of the Last Days—a cult that ended in a gruesome massacre back in 1975. In the years since, there have been a number of documentaries and films about the tragedy, but none of them have managed to uncover the real details about the cult’s strange supernatural beliefs. After conducting the first interview with one of the few survivors, Kyle is confident that he can nail this documentary, but then he steps into the cult’s first base—an unassuming, and now abandoned, house in London—and realizes that he may be in over his head. At first, he thinks the lack of electricity will make the shadowy interiors look extra creepy on camera, but then he starts to suspect that something might just be lurking in the darkness. Bat Eater and Other Names for Cora Zeng by Kylie Lee Baker Bat Eater brilliantly blends together real-world and supernatural horrors. Set in New York City during the COVID-19 pandemic, the story opens with Cora Zeng witnessing her sister being shoved in front of a train by a racist man. This is not an isolated incident—Cora’s job as a crime scene cleaner gives her firsthand knowledge of the increasing number of East Asian women who are being murdered. Along with dealing with the loss of her sister and the bloody aftermath of racially motivated violence, Cora is also starting to think that she may have a haunting on her hands—one that manifests in darkness. Whether it’s a hungry ghost (in her aunt’s opinion) or a jiangshi (in her friend/colleague’s opinion), Cora just knows that she needs to get rid of it if she ever wants to sleep with the light off again. While all of this may sound heavy—and it is—there is some lightness to balance out both the literal and metaphorical darkness. Cora’s newfound friends provide not only hilarious banter, but also genuinely heartfelt emotional support throughout the novel. It’s not always easy to find horror books that play into a fear of the dark—partly because it isn’t usually the driving force of the story and so isn’t flagged upfront—so please feel free to leave any of your own recommendations in the comments below![end-mark] The post Five Horror Books That Will Make You Afraid of the Dark appeared first on Reactor.

'Exact Same Thing': MSNBC's Michael Steele Compares Abrego Garcia to American Hostages

MSNBC personalities are still fixated on defending alleged MS-13 member and wife beater Kilmar Abrego Garcia with host Michael Steele on Tuesday comparing him to American citizens kidnapped by terrorists and MSNBC contributor Maria Hinojosa recently predicting that he will be seen as a "national hero." On The Weeknight show on MSNBC, co-host Michael Steele compared Abrego Garcia to journalists arrested by Vladimir Putin in Russia or American citizens kidnapped in the Middle East. Speaking with Congressman Glenn Ivey about the Maryland Democrat's recent trip to El Salvador in which he was not allowed by prison officials to see Abrego Garcia, Steele seemed to hint that the Donald Trump administration had treated the deportee similarly to how terrorists treat kidnapped Americans. The MSNBC host and alleged Republican posed: I'm curious -- could you explain or maybe express -- how is this different -- because I've been thinking about this case in particular, but some of the others that are very similarly situated -- but how is this different from when Putin grabs a journalist? Or some, you know, rogue group in the Middle East grabs an American and we're sitting here fighting to try to get them back? Our own government did this. Even though Abrego Garcia was deported back to this home country (El Salvador) where the government is presumably free to release him if they did not believe him to be a national security danger, Steele added: Our own government snatched him up and put him in harm's way and now refuses to do what it must do and should do to get him back home. How -- is there any difference, in your view, as a member of Congress, when, you know, you're sitting here and you're getting intel and information on individuals around the globe who have been taken by, you know, taken hostage by groups and organizations and all this energy to try to get them back, I find we're doing the exact same thing here in the U.S. now with our own government. We're petitioning our government to stop seizing people and grabbing them off the streets and putting them in foreign prisons. This is the part that's killing me. It was not mentioned that Abrego Garcia has previously been accused by his wife of violently abusing her before she began pushing for his return to the U.S. And just over a week ago, on The Weekend: Primetime, MSNBC contributor and public-radio host Maria Hinojosa went so far as to predict that the alleged MS-13 gang member will be seen as a "national hero" versus the Trump administration. She asserted: ...we have just witnessed how this father of three from El Salvador has now been painted before our very eyes as some kind of international terrorist where state secrets are now involved and national security is now involved. And the truth is, is that the administration has not proven anything. It's not giving any facts about this. And so, like the judge, we're just having to trust that the government is telling the truth. After noting that some who have been detained by the Trump administration do not have criminal records, she predicted: "Interestingly, the entire world knows the name Kilmar Abrego Garcia. At some point, he will come out either a national or an international hero, and Donald Trump will continue to be the President who defied the Supreme Court and led us to a constitutional crisis in this country." PS: On her radio show Latino USA, Hinojosa recently devoted a segment pleading the case of pro-Hamas protester Mahmoud Khalil.  Transcripts follow: MSNBC's The Weeknight May 27, 2025 7:46 p.m. Eastern CONGRESSMAN GLENN IVEY (D-MD): But the focus really needs to be on the Trump administration because, at the end of the day, Bukele and the government of El Salvador -- if Trump got on the phone and said, "Okay, send him back," he'd be here in a matter of hours. So keeping the Trump administration in the spotlight and making sure we keep pressing them to comply with the Supreme Court order and the other judicial orders not just in Kilmar's case but in others. That's what we need to focus on. MICHAEL STEELE, CO-HOST: I'm curious -- could you explain or maybe express -- how is this different -- because I've been thinking about this case in particular, but some of the others that are very similarly situated -- but how is this different from when Putin grabs a journalist? SYMONE SANDERS, CO-HOST: Mmm. STEELE: Or some, you know, rogue group in the Middle East grabs an American and we're sitting here fighting to try to get them back? Our own government did this. CONGRESSMAN IVEY: Mm-hm. STEELE: Our own government snatched him up and put him in harm's way and now refuses to do what it must do and should do to get him back home. How -- is there any difference, in your view, as a member of Congress, when, you know, you're sitting here and you're getting intel and information on individuals around the globe who have been taken by, you know, taken hostage by groups and organizations and all this energy to try to get them back, I find we're doing the exact same thing here in the U.S. now -- CONGRESSMAN IVEY: Yeah, we -- we -- STEELE: -- with our own government. We're petitioning our government to stop seizing people and grabbing them off the streets and putting them in foreign prisons. CONGRESSMAN IVEY: Yeah. STEELE: This is the part that's killing me. (...) MSNBC's The Weekend: Primetime May 17, 2025 7:43 p.m. Eastern MARIA HINOJOSA MSNBC CONTRIBUTOR: And I think what we have to understand is that all of us in the United States of America -- we have just witnessed how this father of three from El Salvador has now been painted before our very eyes as some kind of international terrorist where state secrets are now involved and national security is now involved. And the truth is, is that the administration has not proven anything. It's not giving any facts about this. And so, like the judge, we're just having to trust that the government is telling the truth. ANTONIA HYLTON, CO-HOST: Maria, you kind of -- you talked about the image that's being painted of Kilmar over these last several weeks -- what did you make earlier this week of Secretary Kristi Noem in a hearing really struggling to answer direct questions about that photoshopped image that the President has held up of the fake MS-13 tattoos that, you know, at one point he believed were on Kilmar's hand we now know are fake? And she was really struggling to just directly acknowledge that that was a falsified image. Do you see that as part of the kind of storytelling this administration is trying to do around people like Kilmar Abrego Garcia? HINOJOSA: Yeah. and, you know, the problem is that people are hearing these messages, right, that these people like Kilmar are the "worst of the worst" -- the most scariest people who have to be taken either to CECOT in El Salvador or in Guantanamo. And what we know is that the government has yet to prove whether or not the majority of these people have any criminal records. I need to tell you I was just in an immigrant detention facility -- we're going to drop an exclusive report next week. And the majority of the people who are in this detention facility in Colorado are -- have broken no laws except for being here in the United States without documents. Interestingly, the entire world knows the name Kilmar Abrego Garcia. At some point, he will come out either a national or an international hero, and Donald Trump will continue to be the President who defied the Supreme Court and led us to a constitutional crisis in this country.

New evidence could blow open the Oklahoma City bombing case

New evidence could blow open the Oklahoma City bombing case

For years, the FBI denied that key evidence existed in the Oklahoma City bombing. But court documents, leaked files, and eyewitness accounts suggest a darker truth buried beneath the official story.President Bill Clinton visited a church in Oklahoma City on April 19 to mark the 30th anniversary of the 1995 bombing that resulted in the deaths of 168 people. In his remarks, Clinton said we “owe” it to the victims to “do better” in honor of their sacrifice. But just like three decades ago, commemorating the bombing still requires airbrushing a mountain of contradictory evidence. This is a test of whether the Trump administration will honor its promises on transparency.Clinton’s Justice Department owed the nation the full truth about the bombing. Instead, it spun a cover story that both distorted the past and endangered the future, leaving the American people exposed to new threats.Among the most striking but forgotten facts surrounding the Oklahoma City bombing is the mystery of “John Doe 2,” a man 24 eyewitnesses claimed to have seen in the Ryder truck with Timothy McVeigh. The FBI now insists he never existed. After the bombing, the media abandoned its role as a watchdog and became, in too many cases, an enabler of the official narrative of lone-wolf terror. It professed that the FBI acted swiftly and heroically, the Justice Department delivered justice, and President Clinton led the country through its pain with grace and resolve.Fortunately, not everyone gave up on the truth. Today’s most relentless truth-seekers are anonymous digital investigators and citizen journalists, armed with Freedom of Information Act filings, archived footage, and a hunger to uncover what the gatekeepers tried to hide.I’ve been part of one such effort for almost two decades. Working alongside attorney Jesse Trentadue, I’ve investigated the likely connection between the Oklahoma City bombing and the horrific 1995 death of Jesse’s brother, Kenneth, in federal custody. Jesse’s FOIA lawsuits unearthed shocking documents about the FBI’s concealed activities — clues that led us deeper into the bureau’s involvement than we could have imagined. Then, a former FBI undercover operative came forward. What he revealed gave us a key piece of the puzzle. And yet for all we’ve uncovered, the vaults of secrecy remain shut.Which brings us to a critical moment. On March 26, Trentadue submitted a letter to U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi, urging the release of a decade-old sealed deposition from that very whistleblower. The contents of that deposition could expose the true scope of PATCON — the FBI’s sweeping 1990s operation to infiltrate alleged right-wing extremist groups — and potentially tie it directly to the Oklahoma City bombing. This is a test of whether the Trump administration will honor its promises of transparency. Very few are aware that the Oklahoma City bombing was caught on camera. We know this not just from speculative claims but from on-the-record sources — contemporaneous media reports, corroborating federal files, and sworn FBI testimony. The footage exists. It’s a documented fact. Yet the tapes remain hidden. Authorities only released video of the aftermath. For over a decade, the FBI fought Trentadue in court to keep the video out of public view. The footage may prove conclusively that McVeigh was not acting alone. If made public, the tapes could shatter the myth of lone-wolf domestic terror. They could implicate associates of McVeigh who were never charged.Further, the videos could show that 168 Americans were murdered not just by a madman but by a preventable failure of federal surveillance — or worse, by a deliberate cover-up. This cover story has allowed neo-Nazi terrorists to slip through the cracks, denied justice to the victims, and kept the American public in the dark for far too long. That’s why the Justice Department must act. Release the tapes. Unseal the deposition. Let the American people decide for themselves what really happened. We stand at the threshold of a new era in open-source journalism. If the Trump Justice Department delivers on its promise to unmask secrets, it could mark the rebirth of investigative integrity in America. As Senator John Kennedy (R-La.) wryly observed earlier this year, “Sounds to me like we need to get some new conspiracy theories, because all the old ones turned out to be true.”It’s time to test another.

Glenn Beck predicts JAIL TIME is coming for Democrats — including COVID liars

After years of unceasing Democrat lawfare, the Trump administration is setting its sights on potentially illegal activity that occurred under the Biden administration — and there's a lot of it.Top officials within the Democrat fundraising platform ActBlue are in danger of being subpoenaed if they refuse to interviews with House committees investigating allegations that the platform accepted fraudulent and foreign donations during the 2024 presidential campaign."Democrats are just, I mean, they are really floundering," Blaze Media co-founder Glenn Beck says on "The Glenn Beck Program." "And maybe we're going to see some more justice here. ActBlue officials, they have been asked to come testify in front of Congress because Congress is doing a foreign donations probe."“Foreign donations, that would be like if Trump was being funded by the Russians. That’s a pretty big deal," Glenn continues. "Now, the ActBlue people are refusing to testify, and Congress is like, 'That's fine, we'll subpoena you.' So there might be some people going to jail there."And Glenn believes this is only the beginning.“I’m telling you, handcuffs are coming. Handcuffs are coming over the next couple of months. I think we’re going to see lots of handcuffs coming out. We’re going to see handcuffs on the people of COVID, the COVID fraud, the cover-up,” Glenn says.“It’s going to be the people that knew that there were really dangerous side effects and then tried to cover that up and keep that out of the press and keep people from knowing about those side effects,” he continues.“Those people, you’re going to see them in handcuffs, I think, very soon,” he adds.Want more from Glenn Beck?To enjoy more of Glenn’s masterful storytelling, thought-provoking analysis, and uncanny ability to make sense of the chaos, subscribe to BlazeTV — the largest multi-platform network of voices who love America, defend the Constitution, and live the American dream.

New Star Wars The Old Republic update reinvigorates the classic MMORPG's planets

Back before FF14 won my heart, it was Star Wars: The Old Republic, not World of Warcraft, that first sold me on the idea of MMORPGs. I already had a lot of love for the galaxy far, far away, and while it’s not explicitly Knights of The Old Republic 3, SWTOR does have the storytelling chops to follow in the footsteps of the iconic Bioware and Obsidian RPGs. Add in the ability to experience those tales in co-op with your friends, and its availability as a free Steam game, and it’s certainly worth trying. To give you one more reason, it’s just had a fresh injection of life.
