Star Trek: Enterprise Rewatch: “These are the Voyages…”

“These are the Voyages…” Written by Rick Berman &; Brannon Braga Directed by Allan Kroeker Season 4‚ Episode 22 Production episode 098 Original air date: May 13‚ 2005 Date: Stardate 47457.1 Captain’s star log. We have jumped ahead six years to 2161. After ten years in service‚ Enterprise is going home to be decommissioned—and also to be present for the signing of the charter that will make the United Federation of Planets a thing. Archer is still struggling with his speech‚ while Mayweather and Sato are speculating about what they’ll do next. Then we pan over to a side console‚ where William Riker is sitting in an NX-01 uniform. He orders the holodeck to freeze and save the program then end it. We revert to the Enterprise-D holodeck‚ and Riker’s holographic Enterprise uniform is replaced by his Starfleet uniform. According to Riker’s personal log‚ Admiral Pressman has just come on board‚ and he’s agonizing over whether or not to confide in Picard about the real reasons for Pressman’s presence. Troi is the one who suggested re-creating the NX-01’s final mission on the holodeck to aid him in making the decision. Troi also‚ over dinner in Ten-Forward‚ suggests he skip ahead to when they’re contacted by the Andorian. She also suggests Riker take on the role of the ship’s chef‚ who was the closest they had to a ship’s counselor. Back on the holodeck‚ Enterprise is hailed by Shran‚ which comes as something of a shock‚ as they believed that Shran died three years previous. Shran admits to having faked his death because‚ after he left the Imperial Guard‚ he got involved with some unsavory characters‚ who have kidnapped his daughter‚ Talla. He needs Archer’s help to get her back‚ and Archer owes him. T’Pol advises against acceding to Shran’s request‚ as they can’t risk being late for the charter signing (and Archer not being present to give his speech)‚ but Archer does owe Shran… They head to Rigel X. Chef was planning a final meal with everyone getting their favorite dish. Riker poses as Chef preparing those meals discussing life‚ the universe‚ and everything with the crew. Later Riker brings Troi on board the holodeck to show off the ship. They observe a conversation between Tucker and Reed‚ with the latter teasing the former about his continuing to perform routine maintenance on a ship that’s about to be mothballed. But Tucker unconvincingly claims that he practically built the engine singlehandedly‚ and will care for her to the end. Troi then indulges in some foreshadowing by saying how sad it is that Tucker won’t be coming home from this mission. Troi goes off to have a session with Barclay‚ and Riker now cosplays as a MACO who goes on the mission to Rigel X. Archer comments on how appropriate it is that the last planet they’ll visit is also the first one they visited… Image: CBS Shran and T’Pol meet with the bad guys‚ T’Pol having fabricated a fake of the jewel the kidnappers think Shran has stolen (he hasn’t‚ but they don’t believe him). Once they get Talla back‚ all hell breaks loose‚ as the fake jewel flashes some lights and the rest of the away team‚ who has been lying in ambush‚ fires on the bad guys. Tucker almost falls to his death‚ but Archer saves him. They all get back to the ship and head off. Shran is happy to accept a lift to get them far away from the kidnappers‚ who can only go warp two. Riker-as-Chef has more conversations with the crew‚ then Riker watches Archer and Tucker talk about the impending charter signing and what it means. Then T’Pol reports an intruder alert. The aliens have caught up to Enterprise and boarded her‚ er‚ somehow‚ and demand Shran and Talla. Tucker throws himself into the notion of enabling them to signal Shran with an elaborate rewiring of things that is utterly unconvincing‚ but the aliens fall for it anyhow‚ and one big-ass explosion later‚ all the aliens and Tucker are all mortally wounded. Phlox tries to save Tucker’s life (no such effort is made to save the aliens)‚ but he dies on the table. Riker then breaks the chronological sequence by going back to before the intruder alert‚ when Tucker visited Chef to discuss the final meal. T’Pol and Phlox are present backstage to wish Archer well on his speech (T’Pol having to adjust his neckline). Archer impulsively gives T’Pol a hug before going out and giving his speech. Riker and Troi are seen in the back of the arena‚ talking about the historic speech and the charter signing that would lead to the Federation. Riker says he’s ready to talk to Picard about the Pegasus‚ and they exit the holodeck. Image: CBS Thank you‚ Counselor Obvious. Troi is the one who suggests that Riker visit the holodeck to help him with the decision he’s agonizing over. If I only had a brain… Data briefly speaks with Troi over the intercom about finishing a discussion they started‚ but Troi asks for a rain check‚ an idiom that Data struggles with. The gazelle speech. Archer‚ typically‚ leaves writing his speech until the last minute and refuses to take credit for anything during it. I’ve been trained to tolerate offensive situations. T’Pol admits to Tucker that she will miss him after they’re no longer assigned to the same ship. Florida Man. Florida Man Dies Hilariously Unconvincing Death! Optimism‚ Captain! Phlox is unable to save Tucker after he’s in the middle of an explosion‚ and later is one of the last people to wish Archer well before his speech. Blue meanies. Shran has left the Imperial Guard and faked his own death over the prior six years. He has mated with Jhamel and had a daughter‚ and apparently Archer hasn’t repaid all the favors he owes Shran… No sex‚ please‚ we’re Starfleet. T’Pol and Tucker’s relationship ended not long after it began‚ apparently‚ though they’re both mature enough adults to continue to serve on the same ship for the next six years. Image: CBS I’ve got faith… “Space‚ the final frontier. These are the voyages of the Starship Enterprise. Its continuing mission: to explore strange new worlds‚ to seek out new life and new civilizations‚ to boldly go where no man has gone before.” –The final lines of the episode‚ spoken first by Picard‚ then by Kirk‚ and finally by Archer. Welcome aboard. Recurring regular Jeffrey Combs is back as Shran‚ while Jonathan Schmook plays the alien kidnapper. While this is Combs’s last appearance as Shran‚ he will return on Lower Decks as AGIMUS in “Where Pleasant Fountains Lie.” And‚ of course‚ the big guests are Jonathan Frakes‚ Marina Sirtis‚ and an uncredited Brent Spiner as‚ respectively‚ Riker‚ Troi‚ and Data. The former two will next be seen in Picard’s “Nepenthe‚” while the latter will next be seen in Picard’s “Remembrance.” Trivial matters: The episode takes place simultaneously with the TNG episode “The Pegasus.” While Jhamel is not seen‚ she is mentioned‚ and its made clear that the relationship with Shran hinted at in her appearance in “The Aenar” came to fruition. This is the third straight Trek series finale‚ following DS9’s “What You Leave Behind” and Voyager’s “Endgame‚” that is directed by Allan Kroeker. Having written the lion’s share of the episodes from the first three seasons‚ this is the first (and‚ obviously‚ last) writing credit for Rick Berman and Brannon Braga in the fourth season. After having one or two Trek TV shows in production consistently since 1987‚ there will be a gap of twelve years before the next one‚ when Discovery debuts in 2017. It will be four years before there is any kind of Trek screen production‚ the 2009 movie. The novels Last Full Measure and The Good that Men Do‚ both by Andy Mangels &; Michael A. Martin‚ establish that the holodeck program Riker was utilizing was not an accurate portrayal of history‚ with most of what was depicted therein actually taking place in 2155‚ not long after “Terra Prime.” This is uncovered by Nog and Jake Sisko after some Section 31 files are declassified in the early 25th century. In the novels‚ the characters point out several inconsistencies in the program that indicated that it was fake‚ all of which were complaints made by fans after the episode aired. They also established that Tucker’s death was a fake as well‚ a cover-up for him to engage in a long-term deep-cover mission. Aside from Riker‚ Troi‚ and Data‚ this is the final appearance of everyone in it to date. Image:CBS It’s been a long road… “I’m sure you’ll make the right choice.” I have often stated that the idea is far less important than the execution‚ and this is a prime example of that‚ because the idea here actually isn’t all that bad a one. It’s a nice idea‚ knowing that this was closing off the then-current era of Trek television‚ to tie it back to the show that started the era in question eighteen years earlier. But holy crap‚ is the execution an unmitigated disaster. I remember back in 2005 when they were talking about how Jonathan Frakes and Marina Sirtis would be appearing in the Enterprise finale‚ my first thought was how cool it would be to have a framing sequence on the U.S.S. Titan with Captain Riker and his wife Commander Troi consulting the historical documents about Enterprise’s final mission. So imagine my shock that they were instead appearing as Commander Riker and Counselor Troi on the U.S.S. Enterprise-D. A lot of pixels have been lit on the subject of how terrible this is as the Enterprise finale (both Rick Berman and Brannon Braga have spent a lot of time at conventions and in interviews apologizing for it since 2005)‚ and while I’m happy to add to it here‚ I do want to take a moment to say how this is also a complete and total failure as a parallel story to “The Pegasus‚” which was one of the highlights of a very uneven final season of TNG. We’ll leave aside the fact that Frakes and Sirtis are very obviously ten years older than they were when they filmed “The Pegasus” (this is why I figured it would be a story of them on Titan)‚ there is absolutely nowhere in the episode where any of this fits. There is simply no opportunity for Riker to go haring off to the holodeck for hours at a time to agonize over this decision. And then at the end‚ he resolutely decides to confide in Picard—which is something he does not do at any point. Well‚ at least not willingly—he only comes clean to Picard when he doesn’t have a choice at the episode’s climax. And that’s only the start of what a dreadful finale this is. Just as Frakes and Sirtis very much look ten years older‚ the rest of the crew looks not at all to be six years older. No changes in hairstyle (well‚ okay‚ Jolene Blalock’s wig is a bit froofier‚ but that’s it)‚ and neither Reed nor Mayweather nor Sato have been promoted after a decade of service‚ which is completely unconvincing. After finally having Tucker and T’Pol come together as a couple bonding over their unexpected kid in “Demons” and “Terra Prime‚” we’re told that their relationship apparently didn’t live out the year‚ as they’ve been broken up for six years. To call that disappointing is a major understatement‚ though it’s as nothing compared to the disappointment of Tucker’s “heroic” death‚ which is so clumsily constructed you can see the strings‚ and is one of the most ineptly written death scenes in television history. Connor Trinneer stops short of actually saying‚ “I have to have my death scene now!” but that’s the only saving grace of this ridiculous scene. It is fitting that Enterprise has proven itself once again to be completely incapable of repelling boarders despite having Space Marines on board‚ as the aliens have free rein on the ship before Tucker blows them up. Watching it again for the first time in nineteen years‚ the thing that annoyed me the most was‚ bizarrely‚ the scenes of Riker-as-Chef talking to the various crew. Not that the scenes themselves were bad—quite the opposite‚ they’re charming as hell‚ and easily the best parts of the episode—but this is something we should’ve been seeing all along. To find out now in the 97th and final episode that people talk to Chef about their troubles is leaving it way late. I’ve never been fond of the often-discussed-never-seen character trope in television‚ and the use of Chef in this episode is so much more interesting than the way he’d been used in the 96 previous episodes. Berman and Braga spent their three years as show-runners making the early days of space exploration as bland and uninteresting as possible‚ and their final episode lives down to that standard in pretty much every way. EXCLUSIVE: Chicago‚ Host to Democrats’ Convention‚ Considers Border a Crisis Even If Biden Doesn’t

President Joe Biden has said he wouldn’t call the situation at the southern border a crisis‚ but officials in Chicago—host to this summer’s Democratic National Convention—appear to differ.  Chicago city officials‚ as well as Cabinet secretaries and senior staffers for Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker‚ a Democrat‚ routinely refer to a “crisis” in emails and other communications related to the border‚ according to more than 1‚200 pages of documents obtained by The Daily Signal. One example is an October 2022 email from a member of the Democrat-run Chicago City Council to Grace Hou‚ secretary of the Illinois Department of Human Services‚ as revealed by documents released by the governor’s office through a public records request.  “Thank you for reaching out today to discuss the situation with migrants and refugees in the city and state‚” Chicago Alderman Byron Sigcho-Lopez wrote Hou. “This is a humanitarian crisis that must be addressed in collaboration and putting all our resources and energy to find ways to mitigate this crisis.” In the email‚ Sigcho-Lopez‚ one of 47 Democrats on the 50-member council‚ criticized the administration of then-Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot‚ a fellow Democrat‚ for a lack of transparency.  “For months the city‚ state and federal representatives have not heard‚ intentionally or not‚ the 25th ward stakeholders’ urgent calls for long term shelters and the creation of more housing units and safety nets for Chicagoans and refugees‚” wrote Sigcho-Lopez‚ who has represented that ward since 2019. “In fact‚ the city and state have privatized many services and allowed special interest groups to dictate funding towards politically connected delegate agencies and nonprofits that do not provide reports of their work in the community and therefore are unaccountable‚” the Democrat said‚ adding: On repeated occasions‚ I have asked the mayor’s office‚ who is taking the lead on these efforts in the city‚ to consider repurposing empty public buildings and empty churches to provide shelter to vulnerable residents‚ independently of their immigration status. …  We also think it is our responsibility as public officials to identify other alternatives and partnerships given the magnitude of the humanitarian crisis‚ which projects [to be] between 10-15‚000 refugees in the next months. In the email‚ Sigcho-Lopez told the city’s human services secretary that Chicago has a “white supremacist” problem.  “I am also concerned about the constant harassment by white supremacist groups‚ paid political consultants and politically connected nonprofits who have found it uncomfortable that our office asks questions and demands accountability from all our elected officials and publicly funded institutions‚” Sigcho-Lopez  wrote. The documents obtained by The Daily Signal span August 2022 through October 2023. Paul W. Goodrich‚ the city’s chief operating officer under Lightfoot‚ sent an email to Deputy Gov. Sal Flores on Oct. 11‚ 2022‚ linking to an El Paso city government landing page about the “migrant crisis.”  Flores‚ a top Pritzker aide who founded the nonprofit La Casa Norte in 2002 to fight homelessness‚ wrote back with this reply to Goodrich and Hou: “Holy CRAP == we are on their dashboard!!” At least one federal official also counted the southern border as a crisis in correspondence with the Illinois governor’s office.  “The video intent was to be utilized showing the combined efforts by all during this humanitarian crisis and a show of solidarity and understanding between the U.S. Border Patrol and not only the city of Chicago but the state of Illinois as we are all being impacted by this crisis‚” Eric Salazar‚ special operations supervisor in Del Rio strategic communications for U.S. Customs and Border Protection‚ wrote in a November 2022 email to Isabella Hurtado‚ an aide to Pritzker on health and human services issues.  After taking office Jan. 20‚ 2021‚ Biden scrapped most of the Trump administration’s border security measures‚ sparking a surge of illegal immigrants.  In 2023‚ U.S. Customs and Border Protection reported 2.4 million encounters with illegal aliens at the U.S.-Mexico border‚ up from 1.7 million in 2021. A reporter asked Biden Jan. 13 whether what is happening on the southern border is a crisis. The president responded “No‚” and blamed Republicans in Congress for the situation there.  “No‚ but I wish they would react‚” Biden said. “I’ve been pushing them—my Republican colleagues— since I got into office. I think we have to make major changes at the border. I’ve been pushing it. I’m prepared to make significant alterations at the border. And there are negotiations going on for the last five weeks‚ so I’m hopeful we’ll get there.” The emails obtained by The Daily Signal included those of interest groups and private companies that communicated with Chicago and Illinois officials. Allison Arwady‚ then Chicago’s public health commissioner‚  sent an email last Aug. 10 to Mayor Brandon Johnson’s deputy chief of staff‚ Cristina Pacione-Zayas‚ and other officials about buses of illegal aliens heading to Chicago. In the email‚ Arwady refers to the Illinois Department of Public Health.  “Partners at IDPH will also make contact with Indiana health department‚ given destination of family‚ to ensure awareness‚” Arwady wrote about the influx of migrants. “Child’s family (as closest contacts‚ they would be at highest risk of any communicable disease) had obvious mental health crisis and a medical evaluation in that context‚ but no reports of physical illness‚ based on info currently available. This is reassuring.” In an email exchange Sept. 16‚ Giulio Bruni‚ owner of the GBIT Solutions information technology consulting company‚ told Brandie Knazze‚ commissioner of the Chicago Department of Family and Support Services‚ that his company could be effective in the crisis. Bruni referenced its partnership with Nebraska-based Lockwood Development. “I have spoken to the partners at Lockwood Development and they are willing to delay redevelopment plans in order to assist with the current crisis and use redevelopment funds to make necessary building improvements if a fair lease agreement with the state/city were negotiated‚” Bruni wrote to Knazze.  Bruni added: “The initial assessment of the property happened last October. As we are coming up on a year since then‚ it seems Chicago and the state still have not found enough suitable locations to house the incoming displaced migrant population.” Todd Schulte‚ president of FWD.us‚ which Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg helped launch in 2013 to advocate immigration and prison reform‚ sent a detailed proposal Oct. 10 to Flores‚ deputy governor under Pritzker.  “Nicaraguans and Cubans crossing between ports of entry [at the southern border] has plummeted by over 90%‚ these pathways do not exist for other countries to discourage unauthorized crossings and are not sufficient given the scope of the refugee crisis of 7.3 million Venezuelans having fled their country in recent years‚” Schulte told Flores. Schulte went on to blame Republicans for the problem.  “While it remains disappointing that Republicans in Congress continue to block immigration reform and Republican attorneys general are suing in court to eliminate the administration’s legal pathways approach‚ the Biden administration can take additional action to address the challenges created by the refugee crisis in Venezuela‚ the increasing number of displaced people in the Western Hemisphere coming to our southern border‚ and the related challenges facing cities trying to resettle large numbers of asylum-seekers‚” Schulte wrote.  In an email Oct. 18‚ Josh Dembowitz‚ the Chicago-based project leader for Boston Consulting Group‚ wrote Knazze and numerous other Chicago officials.  “All‚ Thank you again for meeting today in the midst of last-minute budget prep and the broader crisis‚” Dembowitz wrote. “We appreciate your partnership on this work‚ and your commitment to expediting the data requests to unlock insights we believe will benefit the state‚ the city‚ and our new arrival population.” Although several state and city officials adopted the term “crisis” to describe the surge of illegal aliens‚ they pushed policies for “welcoming” and effectively subsidizing what became a staggering problem.  A year earlier‚ on Aug. 31‚ 2022‚ Hou‚ the state’s human services secretary‚ wrote of incoming illegal immigrants: “IDHS staff are at currently at the reception center and have engaged state-funded Welcoming Centers staff to be present for interpretation and other support services.” On Sept. 2‚ 2022‚ Erendira Rendon‚ vice president of immigrant justice for the Resurrection Project‚ wrote to Lightfoot’s chief of staff‚  Sybil Madison‚ saying: “we ask that after the city’s rapid response‚ that the new arrivals be connected with the state Welcoming Centers who can continue case management and who can assist immigrants with vouchers to hotels.”  Kirstin Chernawsky‚ Illinois’ associate secretary of early childhood‚ family‚ and community for the Department of Human Services‚ wrote to Chicago city officials on May 4‚ 2023. Among other things‚ Chernawsky sought to inform them that the “Asylum Seeker Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ASERAP)‚ which provides six months emergency rental assistance (and is separate from resettlement case management)‚ has been confirmed for asylum seekers in city shelter Aug. 31st-April 1st.” After state and city officials touted welcoming centers‚ rental assistance‚ and hotel vouchers for Chicago’s growing population of illegal immigrants‚ however‚ the homelessness problem wasn’t improving.  The documents include Johnson’s announcement Oct. 3 of a chief homelessness officer for Chicago. A press release said the new mayor had “signed an executive order to establish a Chief Homelessness Officer for the City of Chicago to address the current homelessness crisis in Chicago.” The release included a quote from Johnson.  “It’s long overdue to provide solutions for stable‚ permanent and affordable housing for more than 68‚000 of our unhoused neighbors‚” the mayor said. Ken McIntyre contributed to this report. Have an opinion about this article? Tom Friedman on PBS: Why Won't Press Confront Hamas Leader Sinwar on Rape‚ Killing?

The PBS current affairs program Amanpour &; Co. hosted the invariably self-assured long-time New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman on Thursday‚ a journalist who fancies himself an expert on foreign policy. He has dispensed advice to presidents and more recently opined on the Israel-Hamas war with dubious suggestions‚ like giving Hamas a “free pass” to escape to the Hamas-stronghold of Qatar after releasing the hostages. Reporter Walter Isaacson spoke to Friedman about the Israel-Hamas was and Friedman unleashed some harsh criticism of Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. But then things took a surprising and welcome turn‚ as Friedman criticized journalists’ double standards in its war coverage. Isaacson: One metric in a situation like this is‚ are you creating more terrorists than you're killing? Do you think the response by Israel is proportionate‚ or do you think it is actually going to cause Israel harm? Friedman started his reply with a typical one-sided journalistic take‚ putting the onus on Israel‚ before making a surprise turn and jabbing his fellow journalists in the process for their biased treatment of Israeli leaders vs the leaders of the Hamas terrorist group that have run Gaza for years. Friedman: I very much worry that the amount of civilian casualties in Gaza‚ that the long run implications of that‚ it will be very serious and troubling and problematic for Israel. That said‚ we have to remember one thing‚ Walter‚ we can ask the Israeli government any question we want‚ any day‚ and you'll get an answer‚ from the military spokesman or the prime minister spokesman‚ you may not like the answer‚ it may not be full or complete‚ it may not even be straight‚ but you'll get an answer. Then he compared Israel’s government favorably with the terrorist thugs of Hamas that run Gaza. That sounds like a low bar to clear‚ but it’s sad how few mainstream journalists manage it‚ instead laying all the moral responsibility at the feet of Israel for a war it did not start. Friedman called them out. Friedman: No one has asked one question to Yahya Sinwar‚ the Hamas leader. He hasn't had to answer one question. Why did your men -- they actually raped people. This is -- we have independent reports of this. They shot parents in front of their kids. They shot kids in front of their parents. They abducted infants and grandparents. Was that on your orders? What was that about? And so‚ man‚ I have -- I'm deeply disturbed by the amount of civilian casualties in this war. I repeat‚ it will be‚ I think‚ a real stain on Israel in the long run. But let's remember that Hamas basically built its military infrastructure underneath and alongside civilians‚ launched this war knowing what the Israeli response would be and that they bear enormous culpability in this as well. And so‚ I think we have to ask‚ what's going to be the reaction for Hamas in the long run from that as well. However‚ the exchange does beg the question‚ has veteran journalist Friedman himself asked Sinwar anything?

The Trick That Dropped Atlanta Crime

You have undoubtedly heard that crime is down in a lot of places. One trick often employed in places like San Francisco is not to report crimes. Shoplifting is no longer pursued‚ and employees of businesses can be fired for preventing shoplifting. So property theft crimes drop not because theft is no longer happening but because it is no longer treated as a crime. Atlanta‚ Georgia‚ has seen a 21% drop in year-over-year crime. The Mayor of Atlanta‚ Andre Dickens‚ faced with a secession effort in the northern wards of his city due to crime and violent protests from the far left over a police training facility‚ has deployed a novel trick in The City Too Busy to Hate. He actually pushed law enforcement to enforce the law. Under Dickens and Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum‚ the city began aggressively cracking down on gun crimes and gang violence. Buckhead‚ the financial center of the South and Atlanta’s northern ward‚ began agitating for secession after crime spiked during COVID lockdowns. Random suburbanites were shot while jogging‚ home break-ins increased‚ carjackings increased‚ violence was on the rise after the former Mayor‚ Keisha Lance Bottoms‚ decided to side with rioters against the police. Then-Mayor Bottoms and the former Fulton County District Attorney‚ in a series of high-profile cases‚ prosecuted police officers for policing. They targeted one officer for shooting a man who had attacked an officer‚ fled and attempted to tase the pursuing officer. That officer shot and killed the man and got prosecuted. After Dickens’ election‚ the charges were dropped. Other officers were disciplined for trying to get college students to stop their car during a riot. The result was a collapse of police morale‚ police leaving the force and difficulty recruiting. Dickens‚ upon taking office‚ had to do two things. First‚ he needed to calm Buckhead’s nerves. Its departure would have dramatically cut tax revenue for the city. Second‚ he needed to ameliorate police morale. He did both by letting the police actually police. The results speak for themselves. Hotels in Buckhead no longer warn visitors not to go out past dark. It feels safe to go out‚ and the mass of people in Buckhead after dark suggests the feeling is reality. People are returning to malls and restaurants. Businesses are no longer loudly screaming for change‚ and much of the Buckhead secession movement has dissipated. That’s not to say there are no problems. Drug problems remain. Homelessness and related crime are a problem. But the violence the city had seen has diminished as police have cracked down on unlawful gun possessions‚ gun crimes and gang violence. Buckhead has breathed a sigh of relief. People are more prone to walk down Peachtree Street after dark. People have returned to Piedmont Park. The police are visible. Atlanta stands in stark contrast to cities like Washington‚ D.C.‚ where the Mayor and City Council have hindered the police and sent mixed signals about crime control. In New York‚ Mayor Eric Adams has sent police back into the streets deploying variations of "stop and frisk." It has both cut crime and inspired progressives‚ including the local district attorney‚ to campaign against the efforts to reduce crime. Progressive prosecutors in New York‚ not the Mayor or police‚ are causing the problems. In West Coast cities‚ law enforcement has largely given up‚ and crime reductions are often because police and victims have given up reporting the crimes. Walk into a CVS in New York City or San Francisco and you will find most of the products behind glass. You will have to wait for an attendant with a key to unlock the windows. Walk into the CVS in Midtown Atlanta and few products are locked behind glass. Go up to Buckhead and even fewer are locked up. Atlanta has had both leadership at the top and community buy-in from residents who feel safer and trust the police. The police have been engaged in the community and are both visible and available to residents. It has worked‚ and the results speak for themselves. Learning should not be amazing‚ but getting tough on crime reduces crime. Other metropolitan areas could learn from Atlanta’s Mayor Dickens.
