Robert Downey Jr. Is Glad He Didn’t Win 1993 Best Actor Oscar: Here’s Why

Actor Robert Downey Jr. admitted it was probably better that he did not win the Oscar when he was nominated for the best actor award three decades ago — for his performance in the 1993 biopic “Chaplin.” The “Iron Man” star made the revelation on ABC’s “The View” last week‚ just after the news broke that he had been nominated in the best supporting actor category for his turn as Admiral Lewis Strauss in the Christopher Nolan-directed “Oppenheimer” (2023). WATCH: “You lost to Al Pacino for ‘Scent of a Woman‚'” Joy Behar pointed out. “Now you say it actually would have been the worst thing for you to have won that year.” Downey Jr. laughed‚ saying‚ “Ah‚ because I was young and crazy and it would have put me under the impression that I was on the right track. Whoopi remembers.” “We were all on those tracks together‚” Whoopi Goldberg — who co-starred with Downey Jr. in the 1991 film “Soapdish” — just laughed in response. The “Tropic Thunder” star was not exaggerating when he said his early career was “crazy” — in 1996‚ he was arrested on drug and weapons charges. After violating the terms of his parole‚ he was arrested again and sentenced in 1999 to three years in prison — but ultimately served 15 months. He was pardoned in 2015 by then Governor Jerry Brown (D-CA). His entrance into the Marvel Cinematic Universe — as Tony Stark/Iron Man in 2004’s “Iron Man” — marked his comeback in Hollywood after an early career that he described as “30 years of dependency‚ depravity and despair.” In addition to “Oppenheimer” and the best actor nod for “Chaplin‚ Downey Jr. was also nominated in the best supporting actor category for his role in 2009’s “Tropic Thunder.”

Ocasio-Cortez: Biden The ‘Strongest’ Democrat Option To Face Trump In 2024

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) said that she believes that President Joe Biden is the Democratic Party’s best option against former President Donald Trump in the upcoming 2024 presidential election. AOC made the remarks during a Sunday interview with Kristen Welker on NBC News’ “Meet The Press” when asked about why Biden is struggling in the polls against Trump despite Trump facing numerous legal issues. “I think what we have right now‚ what we’ve seen in New Hampshire‚ he is virtually the nominee of the party. His turnout in New Hampshire is actually not something to ignore‚” she said. “We saw‚ from a write-in campaign‚ remember‚ President Biden wasn’t even on the ballot in New Hampshire‚ he won overwhelmingly with turnout that even exceeded Obama 2012 turnout when Obama was on the ballot. And so‚ there are quite a few indicators in his strength in New Hampshire. We will see what happens in South Carolina and‚ of course‚ when we get to important primaries like Michigan.” When asked directly if Biden was the party’s best option‚ AOC said‚ “Yes” that Biden was “the strongest nominee” the party could put forward. “I think we can certainly do more to be advancing our vision‚” AOC said. “And I believe that we have a strong vision that we can run on. You know I think – and – and for what it’s worth‚ the president has said‚ ‘If you give me the House‚ and if you give me the Senate and reelect me to the presidency‚ we will codify abortion rights and the right to choose in this country. We’ll codify reproductive rights.’ I think we can do more.” “I think we – I think we need to be talking more about health care‚” she continued. “Of course‚ me as a progressive‚ I want to see the age of Medicare drop‚ whether it’s to 50‚ as the president has discussed earlier‚ or to zero‚ as is my preference‚ to extend Medicare to all people in the United States of America. But I believe that we can be doing more. We can talk even more about the fact that public colleges and universities should be tuition free or reduced.”

ABC's Martha Raddatz Tries‚ FAILS To Bait Gen. Brown into Attacking Trump

ABC News This Week host Martha Raddatz had a sit-down with the new Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff‚ Gen. C.Q. Brown. What was a biographical get-to-know-you interview mixed with talk about current events in the Middle East was marred by an unnecessary dive into politics. Watch as Brown steers away from Raddatz’ attempt to get him to attack former President Donald Trump: MARTHA RADDATZ: Before taking the chairmanship (of the Joint Chiefs)‚ Brown served as Chief of Staff of the Air Force‚ a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He served under former Chairman General Mark Milley‚ and former President Donald Trump.  General Milley had a very rough go with Donald Trump‚ starting with that photo opportunity that he said was a huge mistake. The former president has since called him a traitor saying‚ in the past the punishment would have been death. When you hear things like that‚ what do you think?  GEN. C.Q. BROWN: I don't listen to it. I'm focused on doing my job‚ and when I focus on the aspect of doing my job‚ it's ensuring that we have a ready joint force.  RADDATZ: What did you learn from General Milley about working under Donald Trump that would be of value if he is elected again?  BROWN: What I’ll tell you is‚ I’ve had a chance to talk to each one of my successors(sic). I’ve taken all that information to make myself a better leader in how I provide advice. And I’m going to learn from my predecessors and the experiences they’ve had‚ from all of them‚ and then be able to operate in support of whoever the president may be.  RADDATZ: So you wouldn't have concerns about working under a president who thinks the election was stolen? BROWN: I’m going to work for the- whatever president gets elected. As Raddatz noted earlier in the interview‚ Brown walks into the chairmanship with the Middle East on fire‚ between the ongoing Israel-Hamas war in Gaza‚ Iranian proxy attacks against both shipping in the Red Sea and against U.S. forces stationed in Iraq and Syria. It was wholly appropriate to discuss these things with Brown‚ given that they are within his purview as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs. And it is then that Raddatz tries to bait Gen. Brown into some “defense of democracy” denunciation of Trump. It bears noting that about two hours after the interview aired‚ we learned the news of the Iranian proxy drone attack on a U.S. forward base in the Middle East‚ which killed 3 servicemembers and left dozens more injured.  The question comes at a time when we desperately need to depoliticize our armed forces and restore readiness. Whole branches are missing recruitment goals because of the myriad of problems affecting our armed forces. In fact‚ the Navy recently issued a directive waiving the requirement of a high school diploma or G.E.D. so long as potential recruits can score a 50 or better on the Armed Forces Qualification Test.  Gen. Brown wisely resists Raddatz’ two passes at criticism of Trump‚ his once and perhaps future Commander in Chief.  The interview goes back to biography‚ specifically‚ his personal handling of the aftermath of the death of George Floyd‚ and ends with a hopeful quote: GEN. BROWN: I- I think everybody wants to have a fair shot. I don't want to be disadvantaged or advantaged based on my background. You know‚ I want to be judged based on my own accomplishments‚ based on my merits‚ and given an opportunity. That's all I've asked for throughout my- you know‚ growing up. That's what I've asked for throughout my Air Force career‚ and hopefully‚ you know‚ I'm sitting in this chair as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs because- not because I'm African American‚ because I'm a quality officer‚ and that's what I want to be judged on.  Refreshing words in the wake of the woke mind virus spreading throughout our armed forces- the idea of merit trumping identity. For readiness’ sake‚ we hope they ring true.

Toddler dies at the home of a former police lieutenant who is in jail for child rape: Report

A two-year-old in Massachusetts has died after a medical emergency took place in the home of a disgraced police lieutenant and foster father. The former police officer is currently in jail facing child rape charges‚ according to the New York Post. The young girl's mother called the police on Friday after discovering the child was unresponsive in Winthrop — about 20 minutes from Boston. There was no ambulance immediately available to field the call‚ so Fire Chief Scott Wiley put the toddler in the back of his SUV and rushed her to the Massachusetts General Hospital. EMTs provided the toddler aid‚ according to a second report. Kathy Curran‚ an investigative journalist‚ took to X to provide details on the situation‚ writing: "A 2 year old child has died in Winthrop. Sources tell us the child was in medical distress &; an ambulance was unavailable to respond. The incident unfolded at the home of a @Winthroppolice lieutenant who is in jail &; charged with child rape in a separate case. @NBC10Boston." — (@) However‚ the young girl eventually passed away in the hospital. The initial investigation into the incident does not appear to indicate any foul play or physical trauma‚ according to a statement from Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden's office. The toddler was found in former Winthrop Police Lieutenant James Feeley's home. Feeley was arrested in December‚ facing charges of child rape. The toddler's identity has not been revealed‚ and the authorities have not made a statement regarding the relationship between the toddler and Feeley.Feeley was previously a foster parent with the Department of Children and Families. Still‚ he was recently charged with indecent assault‚ battery of a child younger than 12 years old‚ and rape. Though he confessed to the charges‚ he pleaded not guilty when he appeared for arraignment on December 27‚ per reports. Winthrop Police Chief Terence M. Delehanty said "[a]ny event like this is extremely tragic for the family‚ as well as for the first responders.""The fire department has done a heroic job today and made decisive decisions under emergency conditions to get this child the medical treatment necessary as soon as possible‚ and we thank them for their service‚” Delehanty added.Feeley was previously put on administrative leave after the charges were revealed‚ but Delehanty said he is no longer employed by the department.Like Blaze News? Chinese woman leaves $2.8 inheritance with her pets instead of her three children

An elderly woman who died has left her $2.8 million fortune to her pet cats and dogs. The woman said the decision was made after her children chose not to visit her when she was ill‚ according to the New York Post. The woman — only identified as Liu — was from Shanghai and decided to scratch her three children from her will. She said she decided to leave the money for her pets because they were the only things that offered her comfort in her old age. While she made an initial will some years ago‚ which included her three children‚ she decided to change who would be receiving her fortune after realizing that her children had no interest in visiting or caring for her. A report from the South China Morning Post noted that her children rarely even contacted her to see how she was doing. Now‚ she has given all her money to pets and their offspring. A local veterinary clinic has been tasked with being the administrator of her inheritance and trusted with taking care of the animals. Liu had planned to leave the money directly with her pets‚ but she was not allowed to under Chinese law.“However‚ there are alternatives to solve this issue‚” Chen Kai said‚ according to the South China Morning Post.“Liu’s current will is one way and we would have advised her to appoint a person she trusts to supervise the vet clinic to ensure the pets are properly cared for.”An official from the Will Registration Centre headquarters in Beijing said they had warned Liu of the risks of putting all of her money into the possession of a veterinary clinic.“We told Auntie Liu that if her children change their attitude towards her‚ she could always alter her will again‚” the official said. The development has caused a stir online‚ with one online user ruminating over how "disappointed and heartbroken she must have been to make the decision not to leave anything to her children."Another user wrote: "Well done. If my daughter treats me poorly in the future‚ I will also leave my house to others."The report did not mention if there was a dispute between Liu and her children that caused the familial divide.Like Blaze News?
