Comedian and HBO host Bill Maher triggered “The View” co-host Sunny Hostin during Tuesday’s broadcast of the ABC midday talk show, sparring with her over his use of the term “woke” and the Left’s rapid descent into anti-Semitism. Maher appeared on the show in part to promote his new book — titled “What This Comedian Said Will Shock You” — and he also joined the co-hosts in their conversation about current events and politics. Maher mentioned issues like schools helping students with social gender transitions without the permission or knowledge of their parents and pointed out that in cases like that, the “woke” far Left was doing the heavy lifting when it came to driving moderates toward voting for former President Donald Trump in November. Hostin pushed back then, not to refute his point but to complain that he had used the term “woke” to mean something she didn’t like. “I just — the term ‘woke’ has been, in my view, co-opted by the Right and weaponized and bastardized,” Hostin began. “So I was surprised to hear you use the term because historically as you know, because I think you’re quite brilliant, that woke is a word used by the black community to note that we must be aware of social injustices — why is that a bad thing?” “But words migrate,” Maher pushed back, noting that the term has taken on a very different meaning over time, but added that it certainly was not a bad thing to be “alert to injustice.” He went on to say that he would use a different word if that one was “triggering,” but reinforced his point about words changing meaning over time: “I think we agree about the danger of the super far Right, and I can’t say it enough, I think they’re the bigger threat, but don’t tell me that the Left hasn’t changed. I mean, I’m old enough to remember when it was the conservatives who hated the Jews … that was a joke.” He said then that if he’d had any doubt that the Left had changed, seeing the recent campus protests would have been enough to convince him as students marched and chanted the slogans of the terrorist organization Hamas. Trust me, you would go running and screaming and begging to live in Tel Aviv.” Maher explained that under Hamas rule in Gaza, women had no rights, referring to the government as a “gender apartheid.” Hostin objected then, asking, “Are you at all concerned about the innocent civilians that have been collectively punished and murdered? Largely children and women? Aren’t you at all concerned about the fact that the International Criminal Court just today issued a subpoena for Bibi Netanyahu?” “Well, that’s — that’s ridiculous, but it’s a war,” Maher said. “Because it’s a war. And they were attacked, and they’re defending themselves. Now, this is a war. Do you think Hamas needs to be destroyed? This is the question.” “Yes,” Hostin agreed. They’ve started five wars since they were given that land back,” Maher said. “They could have chosen to turn that place into any place they wanted to. And they took a lot of money that they took from the international community, and they spent it on bombs and guns and building tunnels. So, if they need to be destroyed, how do we do that? It’s a war. I don’t know how to do that, and you don’t know how to do that. A fact-checker‘s assessment of a claim about noncitizens registering to vote has prompted blowback from Republican lawmakers who are pushing election integrity legislation. The spat took off on Tuesday after PolitiFact gave House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) a “False” rating for saying that migrants released on parole can register to vote at their local welfare office or the DMV. “It’s illegal for noncitizens to vote. If parolees register, election officials would vet their applications,” the fact-checker said in a post to X summarizing the review. Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX), whose version of the legislation may be considered by a committee later this week, fired back at PolitiFact on X while taking a shot at the Biden administration for its handling of the migrant crisis. “Whether it’s at the DMV or welfare offices, non-citizens have myriad opportunities to register to vote, as non-citizens are obviously eligible for government benefits under current federal and state policies,” Roy said in a thread on X. “Biden’s mass release of millions of illegal aliens into the U.S. – including over 1 million via parole – will only make this worse,” he added. “But even if the ideological operatives at Politi-‘fact’ want to torture the statistics to say that this somehow isn’t a problem, then nobody should mind if we put safeguards in place to prevent it from becoming one — that is, unless you actually want noncitizens voting in federal elections,” Roy concluded. Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT), who introduced the Senate version of the SAVE Act, also took a crack at PolitiFact. “Politifact rates a true claim false, yet again, simply because the writer doesn’t like it,” his verified senator account said on X. The senator also responded through his “BasedMikeLee” personal account. “States are prohibited, under [the Supreme Court’s] interpretation of the [National Voter Registration Act], from requiring proof of citizenship to register to vote in federal elections,” he said. “So yes, while it is in fact ‘illegal for noncitizens to vote’ in federal elections, that’s not the end of the matter,” Lee added. “#PassTheSAVEAct.”

Illegal immigrants are rushing to cross the U.S. southern border ahead of the November presidential election to take advantage of President Joe Biden’s policies while fearing another term of Donald Trump in the White House. After illegally crossing the Arizona border last week, two migrants from Colombia told New York Post reporter Jennie Taer that they were concerned about the outcome of the upcoming 2024 presidential election. “We think with the elections, it will be harder,” 20-year-old Ricardo said, according to the Post. Ricardo’s brother Sebastian, 18, added, “We don’t want Trump.” The Colombian brothers claimed asylum after illegally crossing the border and were sheltered at the Yuma Regional Center for Border Health. Ricardo and Sebastian then reportedly were bused to the Phoenix airport, where they caught a flight to New Jersey to join their mother. According to the Post, Customs and Border Protection agents gave the illegal immigrants a court date for an asylum hearing in October. Under Biden’s leadership, illegal crossings at the southern border have skyrocketed compared to the numbers under Trump. Last month alone, Border Patrol agents reported nearly 180 million encounters at the southern border. There have been nearly 10 million nationwide border encounters throughout Biden’s first term in office, which include a record number at the U.S. northern border. Biden has repeatedly called on Congress to take action to address the border crisis and claimed he does not have the authority to stop the influx of illegal immigrants. Earlier this month, however, the Post reported that the president was preparing to issue an executive order that would shut down the southern border if encounters passed 4,000 per day. Trump, who won the 2016 election on the back of a campaign that focused on fixing the border crisis and building a wall, is once again promising to take strong action to stop illegal immigration. The former president has also said that, if elected, he would conduct the “largest deportation” of illegal immigrants in U.S. history. Trump also said he would be willing to use the National Guard to deport illegal immigrants, adding, “These are people that aren’t legally in our country. This is an invasion of our country.”
