I know a little bit about the kinds of speech that generally are welcomed on campus. I’ve been banned from a few campuses‚ including DePaul University. I’ve spoken at more than a few campuses at which violence broke out over my speeches‚ including California State University at Los Angeles‚ Penn State‚ and University of California at Berkeley. I also know that were I a student at any of these universities—and if I said‚ as a student‚ what I routinely say as a speaker—I’d undoubtedly be dragged before the administration and hit with sanctions. I’d be responsible for “microaggressions” by saying things like “Western culture is superior” and “men are not women.” I’d be responsible for “harmful language” for stating that human beings ought to be judged not based on race‚ but on merit. But apparently‚ at the top universities in America‚ all of those sensitivities disappear for one specific group: Jews. This week‚ House Republicans held a hearing at which the heads of major universities were grilled regarding the rise of antisemitism on their campuses. That increase ranges from threats of violence to near-riots‚ from tearing down hostage posters to open Jew-hating slurs. Now‚ imagine that instead of antisemitism‚ there had been a radical increase in anti-black racism on campus: calls for genocide‚ celebration of terror attacks against black Americans‚ physical threats. Does anyone think the respective university presidents would have sat there grinning at the lawmakers who were quizzing them on their actions? But that’s precisely what happened. Here was Rep. Elise Stefanik‚ R-N.Y.‚ questioning the presidents of the University of Pennsylvania‚ Harvard University‚ and MIT about genocidal language chanted on campus. None of the three was willing to say directly that calls for genocide against Jews violated university policy. All three said that context was required to answer the question. One can make the case for free speech on campus—I can and I do—but one cannot pretend that universities protect students against harassment and then soft-pedal Holocaust-level rhetoric. It is difficult to imagine that these icons of sensitivity and of diversity‚ equity‚ and inclusion would be nearly so sanguine about slurs against any other racial or ethnic minority in America. Simply put‚ they wouldn’t. So‚ why are they so sanguine? There are two reasons. First‚ the Left—and university presidents are almost the Platonic ideal of intellectual leftists—believes that Jews are not part of the intersectional coalition of the oppressed. By leftist logic‚ Jews are part of the superstructure of power‚ since all success is merely a reflection of hierarchies of power‚ and Jews are disproportionately successful. Thus Jews cannot be victims. Then there’s the second reason: The hard Left hates Israel. The Left hates Israel because‚ like American Jews‚ Israel is too successful in the region in which it is located. Israel‚ according to the Left‚ is a colonialist outpost of the West‚ and the West is evil because it too is successful—which means that it is exploitative and oppressive. Hence the Left’s rabid attachment to the idea that calls for Israel’s destruction are somehow not antisemitic‚ but actually a reflection of a more universalistic humanitarian creed. Sure‚ that creed would actually materialize in the death of millions of Jews and the dominance of radical Muslim terrorism. But that doesn’t matter. After all‚ Israel is the real problem‚ because the West is the real problem—and we know that’s true because the West and Israel are successful. According to the Left‚ radical Muslim regimes that impoverish their citizens aren’t worth one bit of attention. Israel‚ by contrast‚ ought to be destroyed. So‚ what ought to be done? First‚ donors ought to pull their money from such universities. Second‚ businesses ought to start hiring directly out of high school and stop treating the bizarre credentialing process of major universities as worthwhile. It isn’t. Chances are better that you’ll get a great employee by selecting a high school graduate with 1500 SAT and a 4.0 GPA than by selecting a Harvard graduate with the same statistics. Finally‚ parents ought to stop subsidizing this nonsense with their own children. The universities are corrupt through and through. Their endorsement of DEI has been a curse to reason and decency. Their politics are vile‚ and those politics also make the universities corrupt factories of moral depravity. It’s time to end the system. The Heritage Foundation’s grassroots advocacy arm called Thursday for congressional lawmakers to reject the proposed National Defense Authorization Act‚ which includes funding for abortion and sex changes as well as to promote diversity‚ equity‚ and inclusion in the military. “Americans agree that maintaining a strong national defense involves having a mission-driven military that prioritizes restoring strength at home and ensuring peace abroad‚” Ryan Walker‚ executive vice president of Heritage Action for America‚ said in a formal statement. (The Daily Signal is Heritage’s news outlet.) “Instead‚ the Biden administration continues to weaken the integrity of our military by prioritizing abortion services‚ promoting CRT and DEI initiatives‚ and enabling sex reassignment surgeries within U.S. armed forces‚” Walker said‚ using the acronyms for critical race theory and so-called diversity‚ equity‚ and inclusion programs. The National Defense Authorization Act‚ which funds the Department of Defense for fiscal year 2024‚ “offers an opportunity to fight back‚ but this final version missed the mark‚” he said. Earlier this year‚ the Republican-led House passed a version of the NDAA that included provisions prohibiting taxpayer funding of abortion or sex-reassignment surgeries and procedures for service members and their dependents. The watered-down #NDAA should NOT be passed by the @HouseGOP. The bill also continues to include promotion of critical race theory and diversity‚ equity‚ and inclusion initiatives in the military.  Heritage Action labeled the revised NDAA as a key vote for lawmakers.  The conference report also scrapped provisions to sanction fentanyl traffickers and protect U.S. agricultural land from China. It did away with Senate-passed language to stop U.S. pension funds from investing in China.  “In addition to enabling Biden’s politicization of the military‚ this agreement willfully rejects efforts to deter the growing influence of Chinese military capabilities‚” Walker said. “Lawmakers who inexplicably opposed efforts to combat the Chinese Communist Party—despite their frequent campaign promises—missed a meaningful opportunity to scrutinize problematic investments into China.” The House-Senate conference verson includes a short-term extension of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act‚ or FISA‚ but without reforms proposed by many Republican lawmakers after its abuse in recent years by the FBI and the Justice Department.  “The Biden administration’s radical social policies at nearly every federal agency cannot stand‚” Walker said‚ adding: Public confidence in the U.S. military is at one of its lowest levels ever‚ as demonstrated by a persistent and historic recruitment crisis during a period of increased politicization at the Pentagon. The American people deserve a strong response from our elected leaders when foreign aggressors threaten our interests‚ but the FY24 NDAA conference report falls short of fulfilling this responsibility. A deputy U.S. Marshal is accused of getting drunk and sexually assaulting a woman during a transatlantic flight. Citing four law enforcement officials‚ NBC News reported that the U.S. Marshal was allegedly inappropriately touching a female passenger on the flight from John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City to Heathrow Airport in London‚ England. A spokesperson for Delta Air Lines also confirmed the incident. "Due to unruly passenger behavior while in flight‚ Delta Flight 1‚ JFK to London-Heathrow‚ was met by local law enforcement upon landing‚ and Delta is cooperating with their investigation‚" the spokesperson told Business Insider. The marshal is reportedly 39 years old.The federal marshal — who had not yet been named — was reportedly traveling to London with a colleague to extradite a suspect facing federal fraud-related charges back to Brooklyn‚ New York. During the Delta Air Lines flight‚ the marshal allegedly inappropriately touched a female passenger. The U.S. Marshals Service said in a statement that the officer had "engaged in serious alleged misconduct while intoxicated on an inbound flight from New York City (JFK) on December 5‚ 2023."A spokesperson for the U.S. Marshals Service said that the deputy allegedly “exhibited inappropriate behavior while intoxicated” aboard the flight.“The U.S. Marshals Service takes seriously any allegations of misconduct by its employees. The alleged actions of the employees do not reflect the professionalism of the thousands of employees of the USMS or its core values‚” the statement said. London's Metropolitan Police said it received a report at 6:30 a.m.‚ and the marshal had been disruptive and "sexually assaulted other passengers and crew."The suspect was reportedly arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and is still in custody. While fleeing law enforcement‚ Ian Cramer‚ 42‚ crashed into a parked patrol vehicle on Wednesday‚ killing Mercer County Deputy Paul Martin‚ 53‚ who had been outside of the vehicle‚ according to a North Dakota Highway Patrol press release. Cramer‚ who is one of Sen. Kevin Cramer's (R-N.D.) children‚ faces various charges of manslaughter and more‚ according to court records. The lawmaker said in a statement that "Ian suffers from serious mental disorders which manifest in severe paranoia and hallucinations" and that he had "insisted on going to his brother Ike‚" who actually passed away in 2018.The senator's wife‚ Kris‚ "took Ian to the Sanford Health emergency room in Bismarck. When she got out of our vehicle‚ Ian jumped into the driver's seat and fled. Our daughter was able to track the car through Kris' cell phone and lead officers to him‚" his statement notes. The NDHP press release says that Ian Cramer fled from law enforcement‚ resulting in a chase."When law enforcement approached Cramer‚ he fled in the vehicle and a pursuit ensued. During the pursuit‚ the vehicle Cramer was driving veered and crashed head-on into an unoccupied Mercer County Sheriff's Office patrol vehicle that was parked on a roadside approach. The Sheriff's Office vehicle was displaying its emergency lights at the time‚" the press release states. "A Mercer County Deputy was standing outside and behind the patrol vehicle when it was struck. The impact of the crash pushed the patrol vehicle into the deputy‚ killing him."The Associated Press reported that Ian Cramer had been going more than 100 mph with two flat tires when he hit the vehicle‚ shoving it "directly into Martin’s person and launching him for about 100 feet‚" according to charging documents.Martin "is survived by his wife and three children‚" according to the NDHP press release. The Mercer County Sheriff's Office also described Martin as a "grandpa." "We grieve especially for the family of the hero who tried to help Ian‚ and we pray for our gracious God to show up as He always does in tragedy. We ask the public for prayers for the lost officer's family and colleagues who serve us every day and are grateful for all they do for us‚" Sen. Cramer said in his statement. The University of Pennsylvania will lose out on a massive donation worth $100 million after the university's president made a bizarre defense of anti-Semitic speech on campus before Congress. University of Pennsylvania President Elizabeth Magill testified in Congress on Tuesday about what college officials were doing about calls for violence against Jews. She was widely criticized for defending the hate speech on free speech grounds‚ but she later walked back her comments in a video posted to social media. Ross Stevens‚ founder and CEO of Stone Ridge Asset Management‚ told the university in a letter Thursday that he was pulling his massive donation and specifically cited the testimony about anti-Semitism. "Mr. Stevens and Stone Ridge are appalled by the University's stance on antisemitism on campus‚" the letter said. "Its permissive approach to hate speech calling for violence against Jews and laissez faire attitude toward harassment and discrimination against Jewish students would violate any policies of rules that prohibit harassment and discrimination based on religion‚ including those of Stone Ridge‚" the statement continued. Magill tried to explain her comments in the video on social media. "There was a moment at yesterday's hearing on anti-Semitism when I was asked if the call for the genocide of Jewish people on our campus would violate our policies‚" she said. "In that moment‚ I was focused on our university's long-standing policies aligned with the U.S. Constitution‚ which say that speech alone is not punishable‚" Magill continued. "I was not focused on what I should have been‚ the irrefutable fact that a call for genocide of Jewish people is a call for some of the most terrible violence human beings can perpetrate. It's evil‚ plain and simple." The university defended Magill when it was criticized for students calling for an intifada‚ a violent uprising against Israel. "The University is taking clear and comprehensive action to prevent‚ address‚ and respond to antisemitism‚ with an action plan anchored in the National Strategy to Counter Antisemitism‚" read a statement from a college spokesperson on Monday. "President Magill has made clear antisemitism is vile and pernicious and has no place at Penn; the University will continue to vigilantly combat antisemitism and all forms of hate‚" the college added.
