A Nebraska couple is walking through a grove near their home one late Fall evening when they encounter a tall‚ dark grayish-colored humanoid that smiles and waves at them.I received the following account:"My wife and I were taking a late-night stroll through a wooded area near our home in Omaha‚ Nebraska. This was back in the late Fall of 2018. We know the area well and have frequented the grove many times. As we approached the wooded area we could see lights from the houses beyond the grove shining through the trees. As we approached we noticed there appeared to be shadows darting through the trees. We immediately thought there were children playing around down there. We decided to go and check it out and possibly to scare the kids for fun.We got close to the trees and realized there were no children in the grove of trees‚ no one could be seen at all. We took a side entrance into the grove and walked into the trees‚ wondering if the shadows we saw simply came from the light from the houses in the distance‚ like maybe our eyes were playing tricks on us.The grove was well-lighted as there was a lot of moonlight and virtually no leaves left on the trees. It was fairly cold; it happened before the first snowfall and dead leaves littered the ground.As we walked holding hands into the grove we abruptly heard a footfall in the leaves; at that time the unknown entity crossed our path. It moved in glimpses as if under a strobe light‚ only no light was given off. As it crossed our path it was visible one moment and then gone the next. This alternated as it strode in front of us.It smiled at us and appeared to be waving. I wasn't prepared for this and seeing it froze me in fear. The entity was a biped that stood taller than me at 5'10". It was completely naked‚ though no genitalia could be seen. Where human genitals should have been there appeared to be nothing there‚ as you would imagine a doll would look. Its skin was a dark greyish color. It had very small black eyes which reflected the moonlight. Its ears were tight against its head‚ the ears came to a point.The jaw was bigger than any human's. The jawline went all the way up the sides of its head as if its smile stared behind its ears. Rows of sharp white teeth were visible as it smiled at us. It had slits for a nose that were slightly flared at the top. I can't remember how many fingers it had but it definitely had digits that it held up as it waved. The encounter lasted all but a few minutes. The instant I was able I twisted my wife's arm and I grabbed hold of her wrist. I'm twice my wife's size with a very athletic build. I ran at top speed literally dragging her in the dirt through the leaves out of the grove up the grass hill through the soccer field and into the street.As we reached the street I noticed my wife was yelling and screaming at me to stop‚ and go back‚ go back she said. As she badly wanted to make contact with the entity. But my fear overpowered me and I dragged us both into the house. From our doorstep we could see the grove of trees. I immediately said don't say anything! As I didn't want our testimonials to become tainted with any kind of suggestion from one another. I separated us into different rooms and had us write down our testimonials of what we saw. To no surprise‚ we both described the same entity with the same features.This event has affected my life very negatively‚ as my family thinks my wife and I made it up or are just plain lying to get attention or something. Not knowing what this entity was keeping me up many nights. I must have thought about every possibility. I thought could it have been a spirit‚ a human in Hollywood-style movie makeup‚ maybe a Scooby Doo-type hologram projector‚ or even an alien. To this day not knowing eats at the back of my mind.I fully know aliens exist. With the vastness of space and the countless stars in the universe‚ it becomes clear that we can not possibly be the only life. Even now I can feel my heart racing as I recall the event. Did I miss out on a one-in-a-billion chance to possibly communicate with another intelligent life form? I only have one regret in my life‚ and that regret is not going back to find out for sure what it was. If we are ever going to communicate with beings like this (if indeed it was one) we need to have love at the center of our awareness‚ so we don't flee in fear for no reason.For a long time I never told anyone but my closest friends and my immediate family for fear that people would think we were crazy. But it's come to a point that this itch in the back of my brain has gotten so bad I feel it necessary to tell others of what we saw. I've become so obsessed with searching the web for possible information on the existence of alien life that I often spend hours of my time sifting through garbage on the internet just trying to find someone somewhere who has seen an entity like the one we saw. I am not crazy." The next semi-historical semi-mythological epic may be on its way. Variety reports that filmmaker Brent Ryan Green has picked up the film and television rights to Stephen R. Lawhead’s King Raven trilogy—three books that invent “a historically plausible origin story for Robin Hood‚” setting the outlaw’s story in Wales in the 11th century. The King Raven series (not to be confused with Maggie Stiefvater’s The Raven King) consists of three books‚ each of which has a different point-of-view character. Hood is about the path Bran ap Brychan takes after his father’s kingdom is taken over by Norman invaders; Scarlet follows Will Scarlet‚ who becomes a follower of King Raven; and Tuck‚ naturally‚ turns to Friar Tuck‚ as the rebellion against the Normans intensifies. Variety quotes Green’s statement on the series: “It’s been more than 15 years since I first read Hood [the first instalment of the King Raven trilogy] and the desire to adapt this incredible work for the screen has always been with me. This series impacted me in a way few books have. It’s ‘Lord of the Rings’ meets ‘Game of Thrones’ with the heart of C.S. Lewis. I’m looking forward to finally building out the team that can bring this epic story to life.” (One may wonder if he means Game of Thrones‚ the TV series‚ or A Song of Ice and Fire‚ the book series. One does not know the answer.) Green’s most recent directorial outing was the TV horror movie College Professor Obsession‚ which followed two episodes of The Encounter‚ a series in which Jesus appears to change people’s lives. He was also an associate producer on Martin Scorsese’s Silence.

Every morning‚ many humans wake up to the soothing sound of songbirds amidst verdant forests‚ confident that another sixteen hours of Earthly paradise await before returning to perfect‚ untroubled sleep. But what if that weren’t true? What if something unpleasant‚ perhaps even catastrophic‚ were waiting? Terrible news for the people about to have a very bad day. Excellent news for readers… as these five books prove.   The Andromeda Strain by Michael Crichton (1969) Piedmont‚ Arizona barely has enough residents to justify being a named location. The rural community is a rustic backwater‚ a peaceful town far from the mainstream of history. All this changes when the SCOOP capsule lands nearby. Finally‚ Piedmont will be important… as ground zero for what may be humanity’s doom. Curious about the capsule’s contents‚ Dr Alan Benedict cracked open the satellite. Minutes later‚ almost every Piedmont resident was dead‚ a few lingering long enough to go mad. The only survivors are a fussy baby and an alcoholic old man. If scientists cannot discover what common element the two survivors share before winds carry the pathogen across North America‚ the entire human race may fall victim to the Andromeda Strain. On the one hand‚ Dr. Benedict was an idiot. Even if SCOOP had not contained a lethal extraterrestrial pathogen‚ opening it would have contaminated the contents‚ potentially ruining the research. On the other hand‚ the proper authorities might have taken it to a considerably more populated region before popping it open to discover the highly unorthodox life-form that laughs at conventional containment methods. In the long run‚ the doctor may have saved millions of lives. Still an idiot‚ though.   A Wizard’s Henchman by Matthew Hughes (2016) Erm Kaslo has made a very nice living for himself as an all-round troubleshooter for rich men. As long as Kaslo gets paid—and it is a very foolish person who tries to short Kaslo on wages owed—Kaslo is not overly particular about the nature of his employers or the peculiar beliefs said employers might hold. Diomedo Obron believes the age of science will end‚ replaced by a new age of magic. Kaslo believes Obron can afford Kaslo’s steep fees. That other stuff is not Kaslo’s business. At least‚ not until Obron’s prediction comes true‚ leaving Kaslo the challenging task of surviving in a universe whose very laws have been transformed beyond recognition. How well does galactic society deal with the end of the science on which so many lives depend? Not well at all. The galaxy becomes much emptier over a very short period of time. However‚ Kaslo is nothing if not adaptable.   The Deep Sky by Yume Kitasei (2023) Refusing to be distracted by climate change-related disasters‚ oligarch Linda Trembling orchestrated the global effort to pour precious resources into the starship Phoenix. While Earth sleepwalks towards global war‚ Phoenix will convey its elite crew to the vaguely named Planet X.  Who knows? Perhaps the colony will survive. A decade into the voyage‚ crewpersons Asuka and Kat venture onto the hull to investigate a mysterious object. One bomb detonation later‚ Kat and two crewmembers inside Phoenix are dead. Asuka is drawn into an investigation to uncover the saboteur. If only there were not so many suspects. If only Asuka were as hypercompetent as her crewmates‚ rather than having obtained her position through a loophole…. Sabotage aside‚ various details in the novel suggest that the ship has been designed without much redundancy in vital systems. Perhaps to be expected in a project at the cutting edge of technology‚ helmed by an oligarch more concerned with ego than practicality. As yet‚ this is a standalone novel. Sequels could very well illustrate how not to colonize alien worlds.   These Lifeless Things by Premee Mohamed (2021) Fifty years after the Setback‚ researchers like Emerson find themselves frustratingly poorly informed about the calamity. The demographic consequences are obvious. Something caused the human population to swiftly decline from eight billion people to forty million. What that something was is curiously undocumented…until now‚ when Eve’s journal is uncovered. Fifty years earlier‚ Eve survived the initial stages of human contact with Them. The intruder’s origin is unknown. Their nature is unclear. Their hostility and overwhelming superiority are evidenced by the carnage left in Their wake. Having lost almost everything‚ Eve cannot turn down a chance to strike back at the invaders‚ even if this amounts to suicide. Humanity reduced to forty million people sounds bad‚ I know. However‚ that’s as many people as were around during Sumer’s heyday. It is far more humans than have been alive at any given time during most of the species’ existence. Forty million people is lots! …Unless you’re one of the eight billion who didn’t make it.   A Paradise Built in Hell by Rebecca Solnit (2009) Speculative fiction being so very fond of catastrophe and enamored of certain specific plot-enabling tropes‚ it might be useful to step back and look at actual reality. In this non-fiction text‚ Solnit examines a sequence of catastrophes and their aftermath. What she discovers is that human nature under pressure is starkly different from that predicted by disaster fiction: Disaster does not produce Hobbesian war of all against all‚ but its opposite. This raises the question of why so many words have been devoted to convincing people that society is one minor setback away from mass chaos and death. The text casts some light on that question as well. Readers might do well to consider who benefits from promoting those worldviews. ***   Rapid-onset calamity being the handy plot-enabler that it is‚ it appears in a myriad of works. However‚ with the newest release‚ we need to know if crossplay will be enabled or if multiplayer will be featured at all in Dragons Dogma 2. Will there be crossplay in Dragons Dogma 2? There won’t be any crossplay in Dragons Dogma 2 because there won’t be any need for it. Dragons Dogma 2 won’t feature any multiplayer capabilities at all.
