Ever since the movie was released in 1997‚ viewers have argued over whether there was enough room for both Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Rose (Kate Winslet) to fit onto the door‚ using it as a makeshift raft until they could be rescued from the frigid sea. Many movie fans claim that the door may not have been buoyant enough to support two adults‚ even if there was sufficient physical space. In the film‚ Rose survived‚ and Jack died from hypothermia. The prop piece of balsa wood‚ which the auction listing says came from part of the door frame above the ship’s first-class lounge entrance‚ was one of several movie props sold at the Heritage Auctions Treasures from Planet Hollywood event‚ per The Guardian.  Other significant items included Winslet’s dress in “Titanic‚” which fetched $125‚000‚ and Indiana Jones’s bullwhip from “The Temple of Doom‚” which went for more than half a million. In a decision that may affect the swing state of Pennsylvania and possibly other swing states‚ the U.S. 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals reversed on Wednesday the order of a federal district court and handed the Republican National Committee (RNC) a victory regarding signature verification for mail voting in Pennsylvania. The case centered around whether mail-in ballots that were mailed in time but either possessed an incorrect date or no date at all under the voter’s signature should be counted‚ NPR noted. Democrats argued that the Materiality Provision established in Section 10101(a)(2)(B) of the Civil Rights Act of 1964‚ applies in this case and that the ballots could therefore be counted. The Materiality Provision prohibits denial of the right to vote because of an “error or omission” on paperwork “related to any application‚ registration‚ or other act requisite to voting‚” if the mistake is “not material in determining whether [an] individual is qualified” to vote. The RNC countered that enforcement of the date requirement for a ballot “does not impinge on the right to vote” because the Materiality Provision “only prohibits immaterial requirements affecting the qualification and registration of a voter‚” not additional requirements for casting a ballot. One stage‚ voter qualification‚ deals with who votes. To register and thus be authorized to vote‚ applicants must follow prescribed steps and meet certain requirements. It’s like obtaining a license to drive. Another stage deals with how ballots are cast by those previously authorized to vote‚ which is governed by a different set of rules. To cast a ballot that is valid and will be counted‚ all qualified voters must abide by certain requirements‚ just like those authorized to drive must obey the State’s traffic laws like everyone else. The Materiality Provision is an important federal overlay on state election requirements during the “who” stage: voter qualification. It prohibits States from denying an applicant the right to vote based on an error or omission in paperwork involving his application if that mistake is immaterial in determining whether he is qualified to vote. That is‚ it is triggered when conduct or laws restrict who may vote. But it leaves it to the States to decide how qualified voters must cast a valid ballot. Pennsylvania has made one such rule—the date requirement—mandatory. The federal Materiality Provision‚ in our view‚ does not interfere. Sacramento’s city council unanimously approved a resolution on Tuesday declaring it a “sanctuary city” for trans-identifying people. The resolution declares the city a “place of safety” for trans-identifying people and says Sacramento will not cooperate with states seeking to enforce laws relating to transgender medical services. “California has been a leader in protecting the rights of transgender individuals to access care‚ but many states across the nation are moving in the opposite direction‚” the resolution reads. “In preparation of future legislation that may criminalize those providing or seeking gender-affirming care and given the Council’s stated values of equity and inclusion‚ it is important for the City of Sacramento to be proactive in reiterating our commitment to transgender rights and equal protections for transgender people by declaring ourselves a sanctuary city and a place of safety for transgender people.” The resolution states that “no city resources — including staff time — would be used to detain individuals seeking care‚ or otherwise to cooperate with jurisdictions seeking to enforce laws criminalizing gender affirming care in other jurisdictions.” “The City of Sacramento is already a sanctuary city for immigrants; this proposed resolution would enact the same protections for transgender individuals‚” the resolution notes. The Illinois Supreme Court will hear Jussie Smollett’s appeal after an appeals court in December upheld his conviction for disorderly conduct. The conviction stems from Smollett’s 2019 claim that he was the victim of a hate crime – an allegation that proved to be false. The Illinois Supreme Court on Wednesday released a list of cases that it would allow to appeal‚ and Smollett’s case is included. In December‚ a state appeals court upheld Smollett’s conviction in a 2-1 vote‚ WLS reported. Smollett then took his appeal to the state Supreme Court. A hearing date for the appeal has not been set. In January 2019‚ Smollett claimed he was walking alone at night in Chicago during a polar vortex when two supporters of former President Donald Trump — allegedly carrying rope and bleach — recognized him from his role on “Empire” and brutally attacked him while yelling racial and homophobic slurs. Smollett returned to a friend’s home and called the police‚ still wearing the noose that he said was placed around his neck by his attackers. It was later reported that Smollett hired two Nigerian brothers he had previously worked with to stage the attack to raise his profile and hopefully get him a raise on “Empire” and further his acting career. The brothers alleged that Smollett paid them to buy plain red hats that he later claimed were “Make American Great Again” (MAGA) hats‚ signaling the attackers’ support of Trump. In September 2020‚ Smollett insisted he was “set up” and continued to claim that he was attacked by two white men wearing MAGA hats. The brothers who said they were paid to stage the attack are black. The Daily Wire reported at the time that Smollett suddenly started claiming he had two witnesses who could prove he did not fake the attack. After Chicago police investigated Smollett’s original claims for two weeks‚ they suspected he had staged the attack. Smollett was charged with 16 counts of lying to police‚ but those charges were dropped as part of a sweetheart plea deal made with the Cook County State’s Attorney’s office. Former billionaire entrepreneur and FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried was sentenced to 25 years in federal prison on Thursday after he was found guilty in November of seven counts‚ including wire fraud and conspiracy to commit wire fraud‚ crimes that cost customers and lenders billions of dollars. New York Judge Lewis Kaplan slapped Bankman-Fried‚ also known as SBF‚ with 25 years after prosecutors said the 32-year-old should face a sentence between 40-50 years‚ CNN reported. The judge found that following the collapse of the former billionaire’s cryptocurrency empire‚ investors‚ lenders‚ and customers lost more than $10 billion. “He did it because he wanted to be a hugely‚ hugely political influential person in this country‚” Kaplan said‚ according to The New York Post‚ adding‚ “He knew it was wrong‚ he knew it was criminal‚ he regrets that he made a very bad bet about the likelihood of being caught.” Judge Kaplan also said in the sentencing hearing that SBF committed witness tampering and perjury during his monthslong trial when he communicated with the former FTX general counsel while in custody and falsely testified that he did not know that FTX’s sister hedge fund Alameda Research spent his customers’ deposits before the fall of 2022. Mississippi sent a cease-and-desist letter to BlackRock on Tuesday accusing the financial asset manager of misleading investors about its environmental‚ social‚ and governance policies and threatening to level a steep fine on the firm.  The letter‚ from Mississippi Secretary of State Michael Watson‚ says that BlackRock may face a multimillion-dollar financial penalty if it does not comply with the state’s demands. BlackRock‚ which manages over $10 trillion in assets‚ has faced increasing scrutiny from Republican officials over its investing policies‚ especially in relation to its links to climate activist groups.  “BlackRock has made and continues to make untrue statements of material fact‚ and to omit material facts to make its statements not misleading‚ to investors and potential investors in Mississippi‚” a copy of the letter obtained by The Daily Wire says. “These misrepresentations pertain to BlackRock’s provision of investment services‚ especially its involvement in pushing Environmental‚ Social‚ and Governance (‘ESG’) factors on portfolio companies. Additionally‚ many of BlackRock’s acts‚ practices‚ and courses of business operate or would operate as a fraud or deceit upon investors and potential investors in Mississippi.” Watson said that the letter and notice of intent to impose administrative penalty was part of Mississippi’s efforts to go after politicized investment companies.  “Investment companies will not push their political agenda on Mississippians‚ especially through fraudulent and deceptive means‚” Watson said. “All citizens should have the opportunity to make informed and educated decisions when investing their hard-earned money. If not‚ our office will hold these bad actors accountable.” The letter alleges that there are two categories of false and misleading statements made by BlackRock to investors. The first claims that while BlackRock says it doesn’t use all funds for ESG purposes it has already committed “to use all assets under management to advance the environmental agenda of reducing carbon emissions to ‘net zero.’” The second category includes statements from BlackRock indicating that ESG-related investing brings positive financial results.
