Trust God to Finish What He Began – Senior Living – November 23

Trust God to Finish What He Began I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you‚ I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now‚ being confident of this‚ that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. – Philippians 1:3-6 A man was touring a paper factory in England that many said made the finest paper in the world. On the tour‚ he was shown a huge pile of old rags that were one of the elements used to make the paper. The tour guide told him that the old rags were what made the paper so sturdy and of such high quality. Before he left‚ he ordered a package of stationery to be sent to him. A few weeks later‚ he received from the company a package of paper with his initials embossed on it. On the top piece were written the words‚ "Dirty Rags Transformed.” The same is true of the Christian life. Only Jesus can transform our lives from what we were‚ into something new and wonderful. And that's exactly what He promises to whomever comes to Him. Maybe today‚ you feel like you're early on in the process of being transformed into something new. Don't be discouraged. Jesus started the work in you the moment you came to faith. And you can be confident He'll finish it! Prayer Challenge: Ask God to give you the assurance that He's working in your life – and will finish what He started! Questions for Thought: Why do you believe God usually makes transformation a process rather than a moment in time? What are your "dirty rags" today that God is making clean? A Prayer for Thanksgiving – Your Daily Prayer – November 23

A Prayer for ThanksgivingBy Emma Danzey 1 Thessalonians 5:18 says‚ "Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus." Thanksgiving is a wonderful time of the year. As the United States celebrates this holiday of God's provisions‚ many of us will be cooking casseroles‚ watching the Macy's parade‚ playing football in the backyard‚ and visiting with loved ones. This is not just a gathering‚ this is an opportunity to live out giving thanks in all circumstances. This is not just God's will for one day a year‚ but for every day of our lives. As we pray for Thanksgiving may it remind us to be thankful always. Let’s Pray: Dear Lord‚Thank You for holidays. Thank you for times when we can gather with loved ones and celebrate all of Your blessings. We pray that this Thanksgiving is a time of great gratitude and love for those around us. Whether relationships are strong or rocky‚ we are grateful for the opportunity to invest in them and nurture them. Thank You for the witnessing opportunities that many of us will have with family or friends. Help us not to live in a spirit of fear‚ but of power and confidence in You. May our words of the gospel be pleasing like honey to them. Would you open their eyes to see the truth and that it will set them free? Jesus‚ would you please help us to live out the fruits of the Spirit and not to live by our flesh? We pray that we would be a light even in situations that arise which are uncomfortable or hurtful towards our Christian faith in You. We pray for those who are grieving this Thanksgiving and the table does not feel the same without a certain loved one. Would you hold them near this holiday? Give them strength to make new memories and to be at peace with missing their loved one. Help them not to feel guilty or ashamed of their deep love. We pray that they would not sit in the grief‚ but that they would be able to find gratitude even in just one thing. Would You open our eyes to anyone in the community or in our neighborhood who we should invite to our Thanksgiving table? We see so many times that You Jesus welcomed people to the table and ate with a variety of people. May we not forget the powerful witness that this is to You. Help us to let go of selfish traditions and exchange them for new gospel focused opportunities. You say in Philippians 2:3‚ "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or conceit‚ but in humility consider others as more important than yourselves." Help us to remember to consider others before ourselves. Please go before the food that we prepare. Thank You for the opportunity to have such an amazing meal. Please protect homes from fires and burnt turkeys. Please protect little ones from getting burned. Protect those making dishes from any mishaps with knives. We pray protection over every aspect of the meal preparation. Help those who have cooked and worked hard for the meal feel greatly appreciated and valued. It is often an under-appreciated job to do. Give us fresh ways to say thank you to others in the ways that they step in. Help us to remember the most important thing to be thankful for is You and Your gift of salvation Jesus. The holiday and the food are temporary‚ but Your forgiveness lasts forever to those who accept You as Savior. Remind us of ways in which You have saved us from the pit and restored us to the Father. Help us to be starters of spiritual gratitude during our conversations and as we eat. Reveal any ways that we try to put You outside of this holiday and focus on lesser things. You are the most important part of Thanksgiving. We pray that faith in Christ‚ prayer‚ and edifying Christian community would be visual examples to the next generation about what we are truly more grateful for even though some years are more challenging than others. We praise You Lord for so many blessings that You have provided for us. Amen. The Blessing of Leftovers –  Encouragement for Today – November 23‚ 2023

November 23‚ 2023 The Blessing of LeftoversSHALA W. GRAHAM Lee en español "After everyone was full‚ Jesus told his disciples‚ ‘Now gather the leftovers‚ so that nothing is wasted.'" John 6:12 (NLT) The notification on my phone said I had a new message in my "bestie" group chat. The text read‚ "Shala‚ this cake is gonna be big. I may need you to come pick up some leftovers!" This SOS message required only one reply from me: a GIF that said‚ "I'm in!" Thank God for leftovers‚ right? It's common knowledge among my friends that my sweet tooth stays ready‚ so it doesn't have to get ready! The timing couldn't have been more perfect as I had just left the grocery store with four tubs of ice cream to weather the storm of hosting people in my home over several days. It was like God knew I needed a cake topped with an explosion of unicorn sprinkles to complete my pending sugar coma. My friend had been making a three-layer cake for her daughter‚ but the recipe made four layers. Still frantic that she wouldn't have enough‚ she prepared a little extra of everything. The leftovers made a whole cake that would let me live my best sprinkle-covered life‚ and I have pictures to prove it! We stood in her kitchen‚ laughing about the "miracle" leftover cake‚ as she gave me ample warning to be careful with the giant‚ round sprinkles that might crack my teeth. It might seem like a small thing‚ but it brought us together that day and brought joy to both of our lives. Leftover cake served as a sweet reminder that God is a God of abundance - He delights in taking care of us and giving us good gifts. God took my friend's fear of not having enough cake and used it to provide leftovers‚ for which we gave thanks and ensured we did not waste it! This cake even reminded me of how Jesus miraculously fed 5‚000 people in John 6‚ when His disciples also experienced the fear of not having enough. The Scriptures tell us that Jesus was sitting down on a hill with His disciples when a vast crowd came looking for Him because they had seen His miracles. Testing His disciple Philip‚ Jesus turned to him and asked‚ "Where can we buy bread to feed all these people?" (John 6:5‚ NLT). Having no viable solution to this gigantic problem‚ another disciple‚ Andrew‚ pointed out that a young boy nearby had five barley loaves and two fish (John 6:8-9). Jesus‚ already knowing what He was going to do‚ told everyone to sit down on the grassy slopes. "Then Jesus took the loaves‚ gave thanks to God‚ and distributed them to the people. Afterward he did the same with the fish. And they all ate as much as they wanted. After everyone was full‚ Jesus told his disciples‚ ‘Now gather the leftovers‚ so that nothing is wasted.' So they picked up the pieces and filled twelve baskets with scraps left by the people who had eaten from the five barley loaves" (John 6:11-13‚ NLT). Today‚ in the United States‚ many families gather to give thanks for all the ways God has blessed and provided for them. Maybe you can recount episodes in your life when you feared you didn't have enough for your 5‚000-people-sized problem (or your three-layer cake)‚ but somehow God provided so well that you had leftovers. Or maybe you are one of the people whose favorite part of the holiday weekend is Thanksgiving leftovers! We say "hallelujah" to no more striving in the kitchen or waiting hours to eat! For days after the big meal‚ if you're blessed with some leftovers‚ let them remind you we serve a more-than-enough God who invites you to trust Him with all your worries. Dear reader‚ can I challenge you to have the eyes of Andrew to look around you for the loaves and fishes in your life? What you have may seem scarce‚ but we serve a God who excels in the leftover business! Father‚ we give You thanks. Whether we gather around a big table or sit with a small bowl‚ we carry in our hearts the everyday miracles only You could accomplish‚ from the sun rising to the breath filling our lungs. We offer You the modest loaves and fishes of our lives‚ wanting You to multiply us for the benefit of our communities. May our lives always be filled with thanksgiving. In Jesus' Name‚ Amen. OUR FAVORITE THINGS How can we bring our best selves into the relationships we care about? You honor me by anointing my head with oil. My cup overflows with blessings" (NLT). We are surrounded by God's miracles (with leftovers) every day. Take time to reflect and journal or share with someone how God has solved a seemingly impossible problem for you. Let's give God thanks! We'd love to hear from you! Dean Phillips Tries To Backtrack On Harris Comments Amid Backlash

On Tuesday‚ Democratic presidential candidate Rep. Dean Phillips (Minn.) tried to clarify his recent remarks about Vice President Harris. The Congressman drew criticism for comments he made to The Atlantic in which he said he has been told by others that Harris is not right for the job of being president. He claimed he was simply recounting what others have told him rather than voicing his own opinion. From The Hill: “I hear from others who know her a lot better than I do that many think she’s not well positioned‚” Phillips said of Harris. “She is not well prepared‚ doesn’t have the right disposition and the right competencies to execute that office.” He later added that in his personal experience‚ he has “not seen those deficiencies” and that he’s enjoyed his interactions with Harris. Asked Tuesday if he agrees with that sentiment on “CNN NewsNight‚” Phillips said‚ “No‚ in fact what I said in that report‚ I hope you just articulated‚ is that that’s what people have told me.” CNN anchor Abby Phillip then asked the Minnesota Democrat why he would repeat what others have said if he has firsthand experience with the vice president. This interview by Abby Phillip with Dean Phillips is interesting for a few reasons… • He shifts blame but also doubles down that OTHER “people have been saying” to him that VP Harris isn’t well positioned‚ doesn’t have the right disposition &; competencies to execute the office… pic.twitter.com/Fb7CZs5MXM — Christopher Webb (@cwebbonline) November 22‚ 2023 “I did not articulate that distinctly. That was asked of me. Others have said that to the reporter in question‚” Phillips responded. “What I’ve said is when I’ve been around her‚ I’ve been impressed. She’s been kind; she’s been thoughtful and decent.” “But what I’m trying to explain to Americans‚ whether it’s relative to the president’s age or the standing of Vice President Harris amongst Americans‚ if Democrats wish to beat Donald Trump … this is not about protecting people‚ it’s about protecting the principle of democracy‚” Phillips continued‚ adding the Biden-Harris administration approval ratings show Americans “do not want this ticket” in 2024. Phillips went on to say he does “not recall saying those words.” Congressman Dean Phillips‚ after getting dragged within an inch of his life‚ now says he “doesn’t recall” making those comments about @KamalaHarris pic.twitter.com/PhmCbmsKLT — chris evans (@notcapnamerica) November 22‚ 2023 “I recall those words being shared with me and saying that’s what people have been saying‚” Phillips said. “… I am defending the vice president because I think she’s a good person; I think she is well-prepared‚ but I’m telling you the country has a different opinion‚ and that’s exactly what I said there.” He added that he believes President Biden is also a “good person” but that the country does not want him as the next president.
