NASA Tests its Next-Generation Mars Helicopter Blades

While NASA’s Ingenuity Mars Helicopter continues to break records for both airspeed and altitude while it explores Jezero Crater on the Red Planet‚ NASA engineers back on Earth are hard at work testing carbon fiber blades for next-generation Mars helicopters that could exceed the performance of Ingenuity on future missions to Mars‚ specifically with the planned Mars Sample Return mission that NASA hopes to accomplish sometime in the 2030s. “Our next-generation Mars helicopter testing has literally had the best of both worlds‚” Teddy Tzanetos‚ who is the project manager for Ingenuity and manager for the Mars Sample Recovery Helicopters‚ said in an official NASA statement. “Here on Earth‚ you have all the instrumentation and hands-on immediacy you could hope for while testing new aircraft components. On Mars‚ you have the real off-world conditions you could never truly re-create here on Earth.” These off-world conditions on Mars include surface atmospheric pressure and surface gravity that is less than one percent and one-third of Earth’s surface‚ respectively. It is because of this significantly reduced surface pressure that Ingenuity’s rotations per minute (rpm) are between 2‚400 to 2‚900 rpm to achieve flight on the Red Planet. This is significantly higher than on Earth‚ as helicopters typically only need 500 to 600 rpm to achieve flight. The Ingenuity Mars Helicopter incorporates four carbon fiber blades organized into two counter-rotating rotors‚ meaning that rotate opposite to each other‚ spanning 1.2-meters (4-feet) across with the aforementioned rotating speed of between 2‚400 to 2‚900 rpm (rotations per minute). Additionally‚ Ingenuity also weighs in at approximately 1.8 kilograms (4 pounds) on Earth‚ but with Mars having approximately one-third the gravity Ingenuity weighs only 0.68 kilograms (1.5 pounds) on the surface of the Red Planet. April 2021 video discussing the design and development of Ingenuity. For the next-generation Mars helicopters‚ NASA engineers at Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena are constructing blades that are slightly more than 10 centimeters (4 inches) longer than Ingenuity’s blades‚ along with exhibiting a separate design and increased strength‚ as well. “We spun our blades up to 3‚500 rpm‚ which is 750 revolutions per minute faster than the Ingenuity blades have gone‚” Tyler Del Sesto‚ who is the Sample Recovery Helicopter deputy test conductor at JPL‚ said in an official NASA statement. “These more efficient blades are now more than a hypothetical exercise. They are ready to fly.” One goal of these next-generation Mars helicopters could be on the joint NASA-ESA Mars Sample Return mission slated to occur sometime in the 2030s. This mission will encompass three parts: sample collection‚ sample retrieval‚ and a return mission. It is the sample retrieval mission that will involve the most equipment‚ including two Ingenuity-class helicopters tasked with collecting samples with a robotic arm that are currently being placed on the surface of Mars in Jezero Crater by NASA’s Perseverance rover. These sample retrieval helicopters will vary in design from Ingenuity in that they are planned to have a set of four wheels used to drive to the sample upon landing a few meters from them. Upon retrieval‚ the helicopters will fly to the Sample Retrieval Lander (SRL)‚ which will then load the samples into the Mars Ascent Vehicle (MAV)‚ which will launch the samples to low Martian orbit where they will return to Earth for analysis. Currently‚ Perseverance has collected a total of 23 samples with the goal of collecting 38 samples in the end. These components include NASA’s Perseverance rover (lower left‚ and currently on Mars)‚ Sample Retrieval Lander (far right)‚ two Ingenuity-class helicopters‚ Mars Ascent Vehicle‚ and the Earth Return Orbiter. (Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech) As noted‚ Ingenuity continues to break records for both altitude and speed as it has completed a total of 66 flights as of this writing‚ which far exceeds the original plan of five flights over the course of a 30-day mission that began on April 19‚ 2021. Thus far‚ Ingenuity has achieved a maximum horizontal distance of 704 meters (2‚309.71 feet)‚ which it achieved on its 25th flight on April 3‚ 2022‚ and a maximum altitude of 24 meters (78.7 feet)‚ which it achieved on its 61st flight on October 5‚ 2023. How will these next-generation Mars helicopters help improve the science and engineering performed on the Red Planet in the coming years and decades? Only time will tell‚ and this is why we science! As always‚ keep doing science &; keep looking up! The post NASA Tests its Next-Generation Mars Helicopter Blades appeared first on Universe Today.

California Will Require Students Learn ‘Media Literacy Skills’ To Spot ‘Misinformation’

California has passed legislation requiring K-12 students to learn ‘media literacy skills’ to identify ‘misinformation’ and ‘fake news.’ In other words‚ the state wants to take additional steps to indoctrinate students and prevent independent thought away from mainstream narratives. “California passed a new law that will mandate K-12 students to learn media literacy as part of their modules plan. The bill is designed to help students develop skills in identifying false information online amid a worrying rise in distrust in the media‚” ABC News writes. Gavin Newsom in October‚ Bill No. 873 requires media literary content to be incorporated into the mathematics‚ science and history-social science curriculum frameworks. The bill‚ which will commence in January 2024‚ was introduced by Assemblymember Marc Berman‚ a Democrat representing San Mateo County in Northern California. In a statement via his website‚ Berman highlighted the importance of integrating the course into the school syllabus‚ saying‚ “Teaching media literacy is a key strategy to support our children‚ their families‚ and our society that are inundated with misinformation and disinformation on social media networks and digital platforms.” “As we’ve seen too often in the last decade‚ what happens online can have the most terrifying of real-world impacts. From climate denial to vaccine conspiracy theories to the January 6 attack on our nation’s Capital‚ the spread of online misinformation has had global and deadly consequences‚” Berman’s statement continued. “NY AND California Dems just made ‘media literacy’ a priority for all public schools. This is not organic. The reason for this has nothing to do with the media. This is what they did in Cuba. Communists took over the schools‚ then they used the trust paradigm in schools to fool young people into only trusting them‚” Robby Starbuck wrote. “Everyone who opposed communists was framed as liars or dangerous‚ even parents. We’re absolute fools if we let this happen here. Get your kids out of these places before it’s too late‚” he continued. A 2022 Pew Research study found that U.S. adults under 30 typically trust news they see on social media instead of stories from national news outlets. According to a Gallup poll conducted last year‚ only 7% of adults have “a great deal” of trust in the media. AB 873 passed nearly unanimously in the California Legislature. Texas‚ New Jersey and Delaware have also passed media literacy laws. In related news‚ New York Gov. Kathy Hochul announced ‘media literacy tools‘ for K-12 students to spot ‘hate speech and ‘conspiracy theories.’ New York Governor Kathy Hochul Announces “Media Literacy Tools” For K-12 Students To Spot ‘Hate Speech’ And ‘Conspiracy Theories’ New York Governor Kathy Hochul on Tuesday announced “$3 million would be allocated to expand the Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services’ Domestic Terrorism Prevention Unit’s Threat Assessment and Management training to all colleges and universities in New York State‚” a press release stated. “The Governor also directed the Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services to develop and distribute a media literacy toolkit to help public school educators teach their students how to spot misinformation/disinformation/malinformation (“MDM”) online‚ sent a letter to major social media companies calling for increased monitoring of content that could incite violence‚ and released an informational guide for parents to help start conversations around the destructive impacts of hate and hate speech with young adults upon their returns home during the holiday season‚” the press release added. “Today‚ I’m directing the Director of Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services to develop media literacy tools for K-12 in our public schools‚” Hochul said during a press conference. “This will teach students‚ and even teachers‚ to help understand how to spot conspiracy theories and misinformation‚ disinformation and online hate‚” she continued. Research Finds Overturning Roe V. Wade Led To Over 30‚000 Increased Births

Research Finds Overturning Roe V. Wade Led To Over 30‚000 Increased Births

According to research published this month‚ the U.S. Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade has led to over 30‚000 additional births. Fox News reports that the study found a 2.3 percent increase in births post-Roe v. Wade. Overturning of Roe v. Wade led to 32‚000 additional births‚ study finds https://t.co/mZTJFZDr6y — Fox News (@FoxNews) November 25‚ 2023 From Fox News: The 32‚000 babies were born in states that enacted some form of abortion restriction‚ according to the study conducted by the Institute of Labor Economics that looked at the effects of the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization‚ which returned the issue of abortion to the states. “Our primary analysis indicates that in the first six months of 2023‚ births rose by an average of 2.3 percent in states enforcing total abortion bans compared to a control group of states where abortion rights remained protected‚ amounting to approximately 32‚000 additional annual births resulting from abortion bans‚” according to the study. The trio of researchers who conducted the study said the shift represented the “most profound transformation of the landscape of U.S. abortion access in 50 years‚” based on preliminary births data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). “As of November 1‚ 2023‚ 14 states are enforcing bans on abortion in nearly all circumstances‚ and 23 percent of U.S. women of reproductive age have experienced an increase in driving distance to the nearest abortion facility‚ from an average of 43 miles one-way before Dobbs to 330 miles at present‚” the study found. But‚ Kristan Hawkins‚ the president of Students for Life of America‚ told the New York Times that the research indicated a “triumph that pro-life policies result in lives saved.” “How much of a difference did abortion bans make in the number of babies born compared to states where abortion remains widely available?” NPR’s Ari Shapiro asked Caitlin Myers of Middlebury College‚ one of the study’s co-authors. “Well‚ it increased the number of births in states enforcing total bans. Our research shows that near-total bans on abortions resulted in about a 2.3% increase in births‚ relative to what we would have expected if those states weren’t enforcing bans. That is about 30‚000 additional births on an annual basis as a result of abortion bans that were enforced in the first months after the Dobbs ruling‚” Myers answered. “And so you’re noting here that some states have partial bans. Your research looked into states with total bans. That 30‚000 births number – can you put it into perspective for us? Is it higher or lower than you would have anticipated?” Shapiro asked. “Yeah‚ it’s really quite a large number. It reflects about a fifth to perhaps a fourth of people in those states who are seeking abortions and who otherwise would have obtained abortions‚ who aren’t accessing abortion services as a result of the ban. So it’s a significant number of people in those states. And based on what we learned from the decade prior to Dobbs‚ I had predicted what the effect of the first set of bans on births might be. And the prediction was about 30‚000 fewer births. So when we came through and measured that‚ it was perhaps‚ in some ways‚ not surprising at all‚” Myers said. Cont. from NPR: SHAPIRO: We know that some people cross state borders in order to terminate a pregnancy. Can you describe the difference between those who did and those who carried out the pregnancy‚ those who didn’t travel? MYERS: Yeah. So what we can see in the data available so far is that people have been flooding out of banned states to states where abortions remain legal‚ seeking abortion services. We also know that requests have been increasing to organizations that will mail-order medication abortion into banned states. What we know‚ though‚ is that not everybody finds one of these avenues to access services‚ and the people who are the most likely not to find a way to access abortion services are people who are young and women of color. We see much larger effects for Black women and Hispanic women. The other interesting dimension of inequality created by bans is how far away people live from the states that haven’t banned abortion. So the other interesting thing that we can see in the data is that all bans aren’t created equal. SHAPIRO: Like‚ Texas is a very big state. And so if you live in Texas‚ you might have a much harder time traveling to end a pregnancy than if you are just over the state line from Illinois‚ for example. MYERS: Exactly. And so if you look at our estimates‚ the effect of Missouri’s near-total ban is very close to zero. We observed very little increase in births in Missouri. Compare that to Texas‚ where we estimate more than a 5% increase in births. Overturning of Roe v. Wade led to 32‚000 additional births‚ study finds https://t.co/YVevo7l957 pic.twitter.com/P4NM5dnniw — New York Post (@nypost) November 26‚ 2023 Read the full study from the Institute of Labor Economics HERE.
