Click to Skip Ahead IBS vs. IBD What Is IBD Signs to Look For Diagnosis Treatment Options Prognosis For Cats With IBD Irritable bowel syndrome—the name alone is enough to make you feel uncomfortable. Even if you’ve been fortunate enough to never experience the pain‚ discomfort‚ and embarrassment of this fairly common condition‚ you probably know someone who has. But did you know that cats can also suffer from a similar condition? In cats‚ we refer to it as inflammatory bowel disease or IBD‚ but it may also be categorized as gastritis‚ enteritis‚ gastroenteritis‚ or chronic diarrhea‚ all of which can form part of feline IBD but are not the whole story. Let’s look closer at IBD in cats‚ from what causes it to how to manage it. IBS vs. IBD You might be wondering what the difference between these two terms actually is‚ and it is largely to do with the species involved. Humans can suffer from both IBS and IBD‚ whereas cats and other animals can only be described as having IBD. IBS‚ as the name suggests‚ describes a syndrome‚ or a set of symptoms that typically occur together‚ enabling the condition to be more accurately described and categorized. It is not itself a specific diagnosis‚ however‚ IBD can be a cause of IBS. Symptoms describe how an illness or problem “feels‚” and only humans can communicate that.  A clinician can listen to those symptoms and combine them with the patient’s clinical signs to make an objective assessment. When it comes to cats and other pets‚ they cannot describe their own symptoms‚ which is why veterinarians rely on the history provided by the pet’s owner‚ combined with the animal’s clinical signs‚ to make a diagnosis. For example: Symptom Clinical Sign Sore leg Limping‚ lameness Earache Head tilt‚ rubbing ear Nausea Drooling‚ vomiting‚ inappetence Now that we’ve got the semantics out of the way‚ let’s move on to the condition itself. Image Credit: Jenni Ferreira‚ Shutterstock What Is Feline Inflammatory Bowel Disease? IBD in cats occurs when the walls of the digestive tract become thickened and inflamed‚ reducing its ability to function properly. Although there are many conditions that can produce the same or similar signs‚ IBD is not due to an infection‚ food reaction‚ or parasite‚ although these must be ruled out in order to make a diagnosis. It can affect cats of all ages but is more common among middle-aged and older cats. There are specific cell types that are usually involved in IBD which strongly suggest that it is an immune-mediated condition. It may be triggered by certain foods‚ infections‚ or stress. It can occur as part of a complex condition referred to as triaditis1‚ which involves inflammation of the liver‚ pancreas‚ and small intestine. IBD can also be characterized as idiopathic‚ which means that no inciting cause can be identified. What Are the Signs of Feline Inflammatory Bowel Disease? IBD can affect different parts of the digestive tract‚ so the clinical signs will depend on what area is involved. Gastritis (inflammation of the stomach) Enteritis (inflammation of the small intestine) Colitis (inflammation of the large intestine or colon) The inflammation might occur in just one area or could affect all three. Although colitis often produces more noticeable signs‚ like frequent‚ bloody diarrhea‚ it is usually the least severe in terms of illness. Gastritis Enteritis Colitis Frequency of feces Normal to reduced Normal to reduced Increased Diarrhea Mild or none Large amount‚ watery Small to large amounts of mucoid‚ may be bloody Vomiting Frequent‚ shortly after eating Occasional‚ 4–6 hours after eating None Appetite Reduced or absent Normal to increased Normal Weight loss Moderate Moderate to severe Mild to none Energy levels Normal to slightly reduced Reduced Normal Gastritis: When the stomach is inflamed‚ it can result in vomiting‚ but it won’t affect the digestion and absorption of nutrients from food that is kept down. Enteritis: The majority of nutrient absorption takes place in the small intestine‚ so when this is inflamed‚ the body can become severely malnourished‚ particularly if a large amount of the intestine is involved‚ or if the cat is suffering from gastroenteritis (inflammation of both the stomach and intestines). The appetite may be increased to try to compensate for the nutrient loss. Colitis: The main function of the large intestine is the reabsorption of fluid from the waste material. Inflammation in this area doesn’t usually have a significant impact on nutrition but can lead to dehydration if not addressed. How Is Feline IBD Diagnosed? A large part of diagnosing IBD in cats is ruling out any other causes of the clinical signs. This can be a frustrating process‚ but a necessary one. There is no specific test for IBD‚ so the most important part of the diagnostic process is ruling out all the things that it isn’t. Patient history is an important component of this process‚ so if your cat’s clinical signs have been going on for a while‚ try to keep a detailed record of what they eat‚ any changes (however minor) in their habits‚ any possible exposure to toxins‚ unusual foods‚ etc. Photographs of their vomit and feces‚ although pretty gross‚ can also be really helpful. Depending on your cat’s clinical signs‚ your vet may perform the following tests: Physical exam: Focusing particularly on hydration‚ body condition‚ and abdominal palpation. Blood tests: These can indicate the presence of systemic inflammation or infection‚ assess organ function and protein levels‚ as well as identify any viral infections‚ such as Feline Leukemia or Panleukopenia‚ and rule out other illnesses like diabetes and hyperthyroidism. Fecal exam: To check for parasites. Sometimes vets will trial some treatments before making a diagnosis‚ such as giving anti-parasitic or anti-inflammatory medications. A diet trial is also a common and important step‚ not just in terms of diagnosis but in formulating a treatment plan. Image Credit: thirawatana phaisalratana‚ Shutterstock Definitive Diagnosis The only way to definitively diagnose feline IBD is through intestinal biopsies; however‚ they are not always completely accurate. Biopsies are performed under general anesthesia and may be done endoscopically (least invasive) or surgically (most accurate). Once all other diseases have been excluded‚ there are two conditions that can only be differentiated with a biopsy: IBD and intestinal lymphoma. Biopsies will only give a specific diagnosis if the sample is taken from an area of the digestive tract that is affected by the disease‚ so false negatives do occur. The treatment of both IBD and intestinal lymphoma are often very similar‚ and it is not uncommon for treatment to commence without biopsies. There are two main types of feline intestinal lymphoma: Small cell lymphoma – A more diffuse form that affects a larger area of the intestine but is more responsive to treatment‚ with a mean survival of 2–4 years following diagnosis. Large cell lymphoma – Tends to form localized masses and has a much poorer prognosis. Surgery can be attempted‚ but survival times tend to be around 2–4 months. How Is Feline IBD Treated? In the majority of cases‚ the aim of treatment is management rather than cure. Some cats may experience a complete remission of all clinical signs after prolonged treatment‚ while others will need to be managed for the rest of their lives. Again‚ the specifics will depend on the location of the inflammation and the severity of clinical signs‚ but common IBD treatments include: Diet management: Using a hypoallergenic‚ highly digestible food to reduce the amount of inflammation in the digestive tract and maximize nutrient absorption. There are a number of veterinary-based diets that have been developed for the management of feline IBD‚ and there have also been some reported successes using raw diets‚ although care must be taken to ensure adequate taurine levels are provided. Corticosteroids: Steroids (e.g.‚ prednisone) are a commonly used medication to treat immune-mediated‚ inflammatory conditions. At higher doses‚ steroids cause immunosuppression‚ which can help reduce any autoimmune component‚ while also reducing inflammation. Due to the problematic side effects that high doses of steroids produce‚ the aim is to reduce dosing to the lowest therapeutic level once the clinical signs have improved. Cobalamin: AKA vitamin B12‚ this is essential for healthy immunity‚ nervous system‚ and digestive function. In cats with small intestinal IBD‚ cobalamin is poorly absorbed‚ leading to further deterioration of the condition and creating a very vicious cycle. By supplementing Cobalamin‚ with injections initially and later with oral supplements‚ the overall health of the cat is improved‚ as is their intestinal function. Chemotherapy: An oral medication called Chlorambucil can be used in conjunction with the above therapies to treat autoimmune conditions‚ as well as reduce the accumulation of thickened and abnormal tissue in the digestive tract. This is the treatment of choice for feline intestinal lymphoma but is also effective against severe IBD. Antiemetics: Medications to reduce vomiting and nausea are often used in the early stages of treatment if gastritis or gastroenteritis are involved. Image Credit: Jaromir Chalabala‚ Shutterstock What Is the Prognosis for Cats With IBD? In most cases‚ once a suitable treatment regime has been found‚ cats do quite well. In some cases‚ treatment can be gradually reduced over time‚ but most of the time‚ management is lifelong. Prognosis is linked with how extensive and severe the inflammatory changes in the gut wall are‚ suggesting that cases that are diagnosed and treated earlier in the disease process will have a better outcome than cats that have extensive changes in their gastrointestinal tract. Cats that spend a lot of time outdoors can be more difficult to manage as it is impossible to completely control what they are eating. The success of treatment in these cases comes down to how severe the cat’s condition is‚ and how much “off-plan” eating they do. In cases where lymphoma has not been excluded‚ the outcome will largely depend on whether we are treating IBD‚ small cell lymphoma‚ or large cell lymphoma. Summing Up Feline inflammatory bowel disease is a relatively common condition‚ mostly affecting cats that are middle-aged or older. It can masquerade as many gastrointestinal disorders‚ all of which must be ruled out before a diagnosis of IBD can be reached. Early treatment and management of this condition can result in fewer significant changes to the gastrointestinal wall‚ thus improving prognosis. Although occasional vomiting and diarrhea are not uncommon in cats‚ if they have been showing these signs for more than 48 hours‚ and particularly if you notice weight loss or lethargy‚ you should book them in for a checkup with your vet ASAP. Biden Admin Would Rather Align With Marxists Than Pro-Western Leaders in Latin America

Juan Gonzalez‚ who led the Biden administration’s curious policy of embracing anti-U.S. Marxist leaders in Latin America while making enemies of their pro-Western counterparts‚ has resigned his post as the National Security Council’s top hemispheric adviser. Gonzalez (no relation) will depart President Joe Biden’s National Security Council in March to spend more time with his children‚ an anonymous official told Bloomberg on Tuesday. The resignation came a day after Argentina’s new president‚ Javier Milei‚ sent to the U.S. a seized Venezuelan cargo plane that has ties to Iran. The action underscored the folly of stiff-arming genuinely pro-American leaders while supporting those who may be leftist ideological allies of this White House but are archenemies of America’s national interests. As the National Security Council’s senior director for the Western Hemisphere‚ Gonzalez personified that approach. “Gonzalez is the architect of the administration’s failed Venezuela policy as well as most of the politicized aspects of our current regional engagement‚” Andres Martinez-Fernandez‚ The Heritage Foundation’s top Latin American expert‚ emailed me Tuesday night. “Friends of the U.S. in the region will be glad to see him go.” [The Daily Signal is Heritage’s news outlet.] Gonzalez has wooed Venezuela’s Marxist strongman‚ Nicolas Maduro; Colombian President Gustavo Petro‚ a former member of the M19 armed terrorist-guerrilla movement; and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva‚ another Marxist leader with an anti-American animus. On a trip just this month to South America‚ Gonzalez again tried to sell the baffling idea that Colombia’s Petro would not only be the ideal intermediary between Maduro and the opposition he regularly crushes but also between Maduro and Washington. “Colombia can serve as an important bridge‚ not just at building dialogue between the opposition and Chavismo‚ but also frankly between us and Venezuela‚” Gonzalez was quoted by Bloomberg as saying Feb. 5 from Bogota. The idea isn’t just baffling but dangerous. Petro would not be a good-faith arbitrator‚ given that he is much closer ideologically to Maduro‚ a fellow Marxist. That would put Venezuela’s vulnerable opposition in an even more hazardous position than Gonzalez had already put them in. It was Gonzalez‚ after all‚ who led the disastrous policy of ending the Trump administration’s sanctions on Maduro in exchange for empty promises by the Venezuelan dictator of “free and fair elections” this year. Sen. Chuck Grassley‚ R-Iowa‚ excoriated Gonzalez in a Nov. 3 letter for easing the sanctions on Venezuela. Grassley noted what happened a mere week after the Biden administration lifted the sanctions: “Venezuela’s high court suspended the opposition’s entire primary elections process‚ ratified Maduro’s ban on three candidates running for office‚ and ordered the organizers to turn over documents identifying registered voters. Now‚ Nicolas Maduro—a man known for arbitrarily detaining and torturing his dissenters—has a list identifying his opponents by name.” Gonzalez also worked on the U.S. release of Alex Saab‚ an emissary between Iran and Venezuela who was behind bars in Miami for two years but now lives free in Caracas. On the other hand‚ the White House allowed associates of Gonzalez to work to prevent the election of Argentina’s Milei‚ a Trumpy libertarian who took office in December. Milei stands for conservative principles that the people around Biden despise. (He’s speaking at CPAC next weekend‚ for example.) Milei sent the Venezuelan-Iranian cargo plane to the U.S. after a two-year stay in Argentina. The aircraft had been sold to Venezuela’s state airline Emtrasur by Iran’s Mahan Air‚ which the U.S. Justice Department calls a sanctioned “Iranian airline affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corp-Quds Force (IRGC-QF)‚ a designated Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO).” “The United States’ forfeiture of the Boeing 747 cargo plane culminates over 18 months of planning‚ coordination‚ and execution by the United States government and our Argentine counterparts‚” the Justice Department’s written statement quotes Assistant Secretary of Export Enforcement Matthew Axelrod as saying. Milei solved this problem because‚ as he has stated from the start‚ he wants an “international geopolitical agenda aligned with the West and [its] defense of the values of freedom.” That is why Iran‚ China‚ and Russia opposed Milei. But being pro-West is problematic for the Biden team‚ so it also opposed Argentina’s new president.  Biden had to have signed off on lending to Milei’s opponent in last year’s Argentine election‚ Peronist Sergio Massa‚ the services of two former Obama campaign aides‚ Robert Gibbs and Dan Restrepo‚ as well as Democratic pollster Jessica Reis. Restrepo is a personal friend of Gonzalez. Gonzalez‚ meanwhile‚ had built what the La Politica Online newspaper called “a relationship of trust” with Massa. “Why would the Biden administration have wanted someone‚ Massa‚ who is dedicated to opposing U.S. unilateral action‚ rather than someone who supports U.S. global predominance‚ like Milei?” asked an analyst writing for AMAC Online. The answer‚ wrote the analyst‚ “is that the members of Biden’s foreign policy teams themselves oppose U.S. unilateral action.” Gonzalez led this abject policy. Whether he is leaving Biden’s National Security Council to spend more time with his children or because the bankruptcy of this policy is all too obvious is immaterial. Good riddance. Confrontational Willis Fends Off Disqualification From Trump Case in Georgia Hearing

Nathan Wade‚ the special prosecutor in the Georgia racketeering case against former President Donald Trump‚ testified Thursday that he was reimbursed with cash for vacations he took with his boss‚ Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis—with whom he admitted having an affair.  “It was cash‚” Wade said. “She didn’t give me any checks.” In a surprise‚ Willis herself took the stand to assert that she keeps large amounts of cash in her home. The district attorney didn’t identify the source‚ testifying at one point: “When I took out a large amount of money on my first campaign‚ I kept some of the cash of that.” Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee heard arguments about whether Willis should be disqualified from the Trump case because of a conflict of interest. The Willis-Wade romantic relationship isn’t in doubt‚ as both now have admitted it. But McAfee’s task is to determine whether Willis hired Wade for personal gain.  Key to answering that question is when that relationship began‚ before or after Willis hired Wade as special prosecutor in November 2021. (She took office as Fulton County’s elected district attorney on Jan. 1‚ 2021.) Wade testified that the romantic relationship began around March 2022. However‚ a former Willis friend who used to work in the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office‚ Robin Yeartie‚ said under oath in video testimony that there was “no doubt” the Wade-Willis relationship began in 2019‚ before Willis was elected district attorney.  To the surprise of many observers‚ Willis took the stand to testify Thursday after fighting a subpoena to do so‚ asserting that she wanted to correct “lies.” Willis‚ a confrontational witness while on the stand‚ testified that Yeartie had “betrayed our friendship.”  The drama‚ with both Wade and Willis testifying about details of their personal lives‚ came a little over a month after a legal motion from Michael Roman‚ one of Trump’s co-defendants in the racketeering case‚ exposed the affair. Roman‚ a former Trump White House aide who directed Election Day operations for Trump’s 2020 reelection campaign‚ was among the 19 persons indicted Aug. 15‚ 2023‚ by a Fulton County grand jury for conspiracy to attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential race in Georgia. Willis‚ Wade‚ and their prosecution team brought the criminal case to the grand jury. Roman’s lawyer‚ Ashleigh Merchant‚ filed the motion to disqualify Willis from the Trump case because of a conflict of interest.  Merchant pressed the district attorney on the stand on the source of the cash she paid to Wade‚ and whether it came from Fulton County funds.  “Cash is fungible. I can’t tell you the source of where it came from‚” Willis said‚ adding‚ “I have cash in my house. I don’t have as much today as I would normally have‚ but I’m building back up now.” “The money you paid Mr. Wade in cash in October 2022‚ do you not know where that money came from?” Merchant asked.  “I do know where that money came from. It came from my work‚ sweat‚ and tears‚” Willis answered.  “Do you know which job it came from? Did it come from the county or from a private job?” Merchant asked.  “It could have come from a private job because before I was DA‚ I was in private practice‚” Willis answered.  Merchant: “You don’t know where that cash came from?” Willis: “I am not going to allow you to mischaracterize my testimony. The amount of money I gave to Mr. Wade‚ it was never that serious. I don’t think I ever handed him more than $2‚500 for a reimbursement.” On the stand‚ Willis also said Merchant’s “interests are contrary to democracy” by trying to disqualify her from prosecuting Trump and the others.  “I am not a hostile witness‚” Willis said. “I very much want to be here. Ms. Merchant’s interests are contrary to democracy‚ Your Honor‚ not to mine.” Willis recounted the couple’s trips abroad to Aruba and Belize‚ as well as to South Carolina‚ Miami‚ Tennessee‚ and California‚ specifically Napa Valley.  Her first trip with Wade was to Tennessee in April 2022 for his 49th birthday‚ and she paid for it‚ Willis testified. The district attorney said she didn’t remember who paid for the flight to Miami‚ where the couple caught a cruise ship together. She covered the cost of their travel for his next birthday as well‚ Willis testified.  “For his 50th birthday‚ I took him to Belize‚” Willis said. “I did 50 big.” During his earlier testimony Thursday‚ Wade said he used a business credit card to book the vacations with Willis‚ but that she reimbursed him with cash.  “You’re saying she reimbursed you?” asked Merchant‚ Roman’s lawyer.  Wade responded‚ “She did.” “Where did you deposit the money she reimbursed you?” Merchant asked.  “It was cash‚” Wade said. “She didn’t give me any checks.” Merchant later followed up by asking: “And you purchased all of these vacations on your business credit card‚ correct?” “Yes‚ ma’am‚” Wade answered.  Asked later where Willis got the cash to pay him back‚ he said‚ “I didn’t ask her.” Asked whether he ever talked to others about his romantic relationship with Willis‚ Wade replied: “Our relationship wasn’t a secret‚ it was just private.” At one point‚ Wade testified that his relationship with the district attorney began in “early 2022.” Merchant asked: “So you were appointed in November 2021‚ and your relationship started early. What’s early?” He replied‚ “Around March.” However‚ when Merchant asked whether the two took vacations together in 2021‚ Wade said he couldn’t remember.  “And you traveled with her in 2021‚ correct?” Merchant said.  Wade at first replied‚ “No.”  But as Merchant continued to follow up‚ he slightly altered his answer‚ saying‚ “I’m not recalling any traveling in 2021.” Earlier‚ Merchant had asked Yeartie‚ Willis’ old friend‚ about Wade and Willis: “Do you understand that their relationship began in 2019 and continued until the last time you spoke with her? “Yes‚” Yeartie answered.  In her sworn testimony by video‚ Yeartie said that she and Willis were friends until a falling out that‚ by 2022‚ led Yeartie to resign from the DA’s office because she didn’t want to be fired first. The two haven’t spoken since‚ she said.  “You have no doubt their romantic relationship was in effect from 2019 until the last time you talked to her?” Merchant asked Yeartie. “No doubt‚” Yeartie replied. Terrence Bradley‚ a former law partner of Wade’s who also has represented him‚ declined to answer questions and cited attorney-client privilege. He said the State Bar of Georgia advised him against answering questions.  “I’m not here to misrepresent to the court or to say anything inappropriate or anything; I am here because I also have a law license and I’m not trying to lose that‚” Bradley said. Eventually‚ McAfee said of Bradley: “He’s taking the position that he’s not willing to share any information that Mr. Wade ever told him. That’s a broader representation of attorney-client privilege than I’d ever heard.” Have an opinion about this article? How to Set Up a Chick Brooder: Temperature Chart and Supplies

Are you raising baby chicks for the first time‚ or simply looking for some fresh brooder ideas and tips? This article will explore everything you need to know to set up a chick brooder‚ including the supplies needed‚ heater options‚ a chick brooder temperature chart by week‚ easy DIY brooder box ideas‚ size requirements‚ and more. With these tips‚ your chicks will be happy‚ healthy and safe in your care! What is a Chick Brooder? A chick brooder‚ also known as a brooder box‚ offers baby chicks a safe warm space to live during their first most vulnerable weeks of life. A brooder is essential for chicks to survive without a mother hen‚ who would normally tuck the chicks under her body for warmth. The brooder contains their food‚ water‚ and a source of heat. It also keeps them safe from predators‚ including wildlife or pets. Where to Set Up a Brooder You can set up a chick brooder inside your house in a spare room‚ laundry room or bathroom – which will make it easy to maintain the right temperature and watch over the chicks. However‚ keep in mind that chicks create a lot of dander and dust‚ so it’s best to keep the brooder away from the kitchen‚ bedrooms‚ or main living quarters. We always run an air purifier in our brooder room to help keep the dust down. You can also set up a brooder in a garage or other protected outdoor location (such as a shed or chicken coop) as long as it’s warm enough and shielded from the elements or temperature swings. If you set up a brooder inside a chicken coop‚ it’s important that the adult chickens do not have access to the chicks. Plan to set up the brooder in advance‚ so everything is ready and waiting as soon as your chicks arrive. See a complete list of supplies and DIY brooder box ideas to follow. To learn more about raising baby chicks‚ including food‚ water‚ and important health needs‚ please see: Raising Baby Chicks 101: The Best Beginner’s Guide. We usually set up our chick brooder in a spare room in our house‚ with the door closed to keep the kitties out. (This was before the chicks arrived – the cats were making sure the temperature was just right.) Brooder Supplies The following supplies are needed to set up a chick brooder: A brooder box‚ made from a sturdy structure or container. See DIY brooder box ideas below‚ along with size guidelines for how much brooder space to provide per chick. A lid or cover for the brooder‚ to keep the baby chicks IN and unwanted visitors (like cats or dogs) out. Chicks will be able to jump out of the brooder or on top of the walls within a couple weeks! The brooder cover must be breathable and secure. Wire fencing like hardware cloth or chicken wire is a great option. A heat source‚ such as a traditional red heat lamp (outfitted in a lamp fixture with a bulb guard)‚ or a radiant heat plate. The pros and cons of both brooder heater options are explored more below. Bedding: A chick brooder needs absorbent non-slip bedding on the floor. Popular brooder bedding options include pine or aspen shavings‚ hemp bedding‚ coarse sand‚ or chopped straw. Never use cedar products (which is toxic to chickens) or cat litter (which they’ll likely eat and could lead to intestinal blockage). Newspaper also isn’t recommended as it’s slippery and can cause a condition called splay leg. Weigh the pros and cons of various brooder bedding options here. Food and water containers‚ like this simple set. Use small containers designed for chicks‚ which are most safe and take up the least room in their brooder. See our Raising Baby Chicks guide for more information about chick starter feed‚ adding electrolytes to water‚ and more. A thermometer‚ placed at chick (floor) level in the brooder. A short sturdy roost‚ such as the example shown below. This gives the chicks something to play on‚ as well as practice sleeping on a roost. Flat wide roosts are easier and more comfortable for chickens to perch on compared to round dowels. Optional: other entertainment‚ like a small mirror. Yes‚ chicks enjoy looking at themselves! Some folks also put a small container of sand or dirt as a chick dust bath (doubling as a source of grit) but baby chicks don’t need grit when they’re indoors and eating their specialized chick feed only. DIY Chick Brooder Box Ideas You can make a DIY brooder out of a variety of materials such as a large plastic storage tote‚ metal tub or stock tank‚ thick cardboard‚ or a homemade plywood box. I’ve even seen folks use portable cribs (like a Pack N Play)‚ old aquarium tanks‚ wire dog crates lined with cardboard‚ or a dog playpen to make a brooder. Any sturdy structure with a lid that meets the size requirements (explained below) will work!  See this post for 8 Easy DIY Chick Brooder Box Ideas including more photos‚ inspo‚ and details. DIY stock tank chick brooders (Images via Pinterest 1‚ 2‚ and 3) In the past‚ we used plastic storage tote for 1-3 week old chicks‚ then upgraded to a large homemade plywood box. We’re getting 14 new chicks soon‚ and plan to use this portable dog playpen as a brooder (one when they’re 1-3 weeks old‚ then connect two together as they get older). It’s generous size‚ enclosed zipper top‚ and waterproof bottom (removable) make it the perfect easy and convenient brooder! Size Requirements FAQ: How much brooder space per chick? When chicks are one to four weeks old‚ provide a minimum of ½ square foot of brooder space per chick. As they get larger (4 weeks and older) it’s best to upgrade to 1 or 2 square feet per chick. We typically start our chicks out in a smaller brooder (which is easier to keep warm and maintain) and then move them to a larger one at week 3 or 4.  These four chicks had a pretty generously-sized brooder. We built a 4×4 foot plywood box‚ but added a temporary wall in the middle to keep them contained to only half of the brooder (a 2×4 foot space) for the first few weeks. Once they got larger‚ we removed the middle wall. Heater Options The two most common chick brooder heater options include a classic heat lamp or a radiant heat plate. There are a number of pros and cons to both‚ explored below. Heat Lamps Heat lamps are inexpensive and effective‚ but must be used with extreme caution since they can be a fire hazard. It is crucial to hang them in a very secure manner so they can’t tip over or touch anything around them. It’s also important to be able to easily adjust the height of the light to increase or decrease the temperature in the brooder as needed – monitored with a thermometer on the floor of the brooder. It’s best to use a RED heat lamp bulb for your brooder. Chicks need to sleep and rest often; clear or white heat lamps are too obnoxiously bright to have on 24/7. We use a sturdy drum cymbal stand to hang our light. A red heat lamp hung over a small DIY brooder made from a plastic storage tub. (Chicks will outgrow this within a few weeks.) Radiant Heat Plates Modern radiant heat plates are generally regarded as the safest brooder heater option‚ with virtually no risk of fire. They closely mimic the natural heat of a mother hen‚ where chicks can choose to duck under the heater when they’re feeling cold or go out to play once they’re warm enough. If you use a radiant heat plate‚ you must also keep a light on nearby all times so chicks can find their food and water. They cannot see in the dark! A dim lamp is fine for overnight.  While radiant heat plates cost more than heat lamps upfront‚ they are more efficient and require less energy to use. However‚ since the heat is concentrated around the plate (rather than warming the entire brooder) these may not be the best option if your brooder is located in a very cold location‚ like an uninsulated shed or garage in winter. TIP: Choose a brooder heat plate that has a domed lid on top‚ which prevents the chicks from roosting (and pooping) on top. Though radiant heat plates are “safer” (for fire)‚ be sure to double and triple check they’re on and working! I’ve heard horror stories about one breaking‚ and the person didn’t realize it in time and lost all their chicks. Chick brooder temperature chart by week The temperature in a chick brooder starts out very warm (90-95°F degrees the first week) and then slowly decreases week-by-week as chicks become older and their feathers fill in. Check the thermometer inside the brooder (at chick/floor level) regularly and adjust the heat lamp height and temperature as needed. The chick’s behavior will also tell you if they’re too hot or too cold‚ discussed more below. Week 1: 90-95°F (32-35°C) Week 2: 85-90°F (30-32°C) Week 3: 80-85°F (27-30°C). Start short trips outside on warm sunny days. Week 4: 75-80°F (24-37°C). Gradually increase short trips outside. Week 5: 70-75°F (21-24°C). We may start turning off the brooder heater during the day at this time‚ depending on the temperature inside. Week 6: 65-70°F (18-21°C) Since our brooder is in the house‚ we often completely remove the brooder heater at this point. Week 7: 60-65°F (15-18°C) In our temperate climate‚ we usually move the chicks outside by week 7. Learn more about deciding exactly when to move chicks outside below. Week 8: 50-60°F (10-15°C) – Time to move outside! Chick behavior and temperature A comfortable chick will be a nice balance of active and sleepy. They should be able to get closer or further away from the light (or heat plate) freely. Maintain their food and water near the edge of their comfort zone‚ so they don’t need to be too heated or chilled to eat and drink. When they’re too cold‚ chicks may run around and chirp very loudly‚ or huddle together directly under the light.  When chicks are too hot‚ they will try to move as far away from the heat lamp as possible‚ staying around the perimeter of the brooder or sleeping away from the light. They also act more lethargic and sprawl out (though baby chicks take a lot of naps regardless). When very overheated‚ chicks may also pant.  When I saw this image on Pinterest‚ my first thought was: I think those chicks might be too hot. See how they’re all gathered in the farthest corners of the brooder‚ away from the heat lamp? How long do chicks stay in a brooder? Chicks usually stay in a brooder for 6 to 8 weeks‚ depending on the time of year and temperature outside. Most chicks are fully-feathered by 6 to 7 weeks old‚ and may be moved outdoors to a protected coop if the overnight lows are not below 50-55 degrees at this time (considering a draft-free coop with bedding will be several degrees warmer inside‚ and the chicks will also huddle together for warmth).  If overnight outdoor temperatures are around 45-50°F‚ wait until the chicks are 7 or 8 weeks old to move them outside. When overnight temperatures dip below 40-45°F‚ offer additional heat in the coop for a few more weeks. Related: Learn more about how to keep chickens warm in winter or cold weather in this detailed guide. Also visit our Beginner’s Guide on Raising Baby Chicks for more information about moving chicks outside‚ including how to introduce and add new chicks to an existing flock. Our girls the first night they moved outside to the coop (about 7 weeks here). Brooder Cleaning FAQ: How often to clean a chick brooder? It’s important to keep your chick brooder clean‚ especially to keep the chick’s food and water free of litter and poop. The number of chicks in the brooder will dictate just how often it needs to be cleaned. We pick out droppings daily‚ and then completely change the bedding once every week or two. Keeping the brooder clean will also help keep unpleasant odors to a minimum. Clean water containers at least daily. And that’s how to set up a chick brooder!
