A healthcare scandal of a more serious kind is now unfolding in Sundsvall. Elderly care has for several years attracted numerous reports of malpractice, many of which deal with serious deficiencies in taking care of patients' hygiene. A demented old man had to lie with dried feces and urine up to his shoulders.
The staff in the care for the elderly in Sundsvall have been caught not doing their job, especially that which is related to keeping old and demented care recipients clean. About 80 reports of neglect have been received and in many cases it is about the elderly being forced to lie with dried feces or in beds and clothes soaked in urine.
Annika Eriksson, who is the chief of staff in care in the municipality of Sundsvall, has no explanation for how things could have gone so wrong, but admits that they failed, while at the same time she points out that taking care of patients' hygiene is a basic task and that the elderly have the right to feel good and feel safe in the accommodation.

The fact that the bad conditions were able to last for so long - for several years - is considered to be due to the fact that those responsible for elderly care in the municipality covered up how bad things had been. Of all the reports on serious misconduct that have been drawn up, only one case has been forwarded as a report to the Inspectorate for Care and Care (Ivo).
Several of the mistreated patients are demented and may not be fully aware of what they have been exposed to. But there are also others who are clear-headed but disabled and therefore unable to take care of their own hygiene, who in the reports stated it as deeply offensive to be left lying in faeces and urine.
Do something other than work during working hours
In addition to the residents, similar neglect has also occurred among the elderly cared for in the home under the auspices of Home Services. The reports now compiled cover the years 2019-2022. More cases may exist both earlier and later.
The reports also contain information about widespread and more general cheating with patients' hygiene. They don't wash, don't get their teeth brushed and so on, have to live with untreated fungal infections in the vagina, patient alarms at night are ignored until the next day and more.
Understaffing and personnel without skills
The more responsible members of the staff who reported the neglect also write that other employees do other things during working hours than take care of the patients. The municipality blames understaffing and being forced to employ people who do not have the right skills.
There has long been criticism of elderly care being used as a dumping ground for migrants who are not employable elsewhere, who do not speak Swedish and have no education. When they are placed in care for the elderly, they end up outside the unemployment statistics for those born abroad and also keep down the figure for understaffing in care and social care.
