An elderly man in Kiruna was found dead in his home with pneumonia. An investigation shows that the man was living in an acute state of starvation and, despite home visits, the doctor in charge chose not to decide on compulsory care but to let the elderly man make his own decisions.
It is Region Norbotten, a doctor and Kiruna municipality that are now receiving criticism from the Care Inspectorate (IVO) after an elderly person starved to death in his home.
The man had refused care and food assistance for ten months when home care and care staff visited him. In connection with a home visit by a doctor, severe malnutrition was found.

But instead of deciding on compulsory care for the elderly man who was in an acute state of starvation, the doctor believed that the man himself could make his own decisions.
The elderly man was taken to hospital by ambulance on several occasions, but there was no help to be had there. The doctor in charge referred to his previous home visit and decision in the case. This is reported by SVT .
Furthermore, it appears from a relative's report that the 180-centimeter-tall man weighed 36 kilograms at the time of his death.
