Molecule Found In Beef And Dairy Can Kill Cancer Cells‚ Study Suggests

According to a new study‚ a molecule found in beef and dairy improves the immune response to cancer. “Scientists at UChicago discover that trans-vaccenic acid (TVA)‚ a fatty acid found in beef‚ lamb‚ and dairy products‚ improves the ability of immune cells to fight tumors‚” The University of Chicago Biological Sciences Division wrote Wednesday. The researchers determined that “cancer patients with higher levels of the compound in their blood responded better to treatment‚ suggesting that it could have major benefits as a nutritional supplement‚” Daily Mail reports. But if we focus on just the nutrients and metabolites derived from food‚ we begin to see how they influence physiology and pathology‚” said Jing Chen‚ PhD‚ the Janet Davison Rowley Distinguished Service Professor of Medicine at UChicago and one of the senior authors of the new study. “By focusing on nutrients that can activate T cell responses‚ we found one that actually enhances anti-tumor immunity by activating an important immune pathway‚” Chen added. From The University of Chicago Biological Sciences Division: Chen’s lab focuses on understanding how metabolites‚ nutrients and other molecules circulating in the blood influence the development of cancer and response to cancer treatments. For the new study‚ two postdoctoral fellows‚ Hao Fan‚ PhD and Siyuan Xia‚ PhD‚ both co-first authors‚ assembled a “blood nutrient” compound library consisting of 255 bioactive molecules derived from nutrients. They screened the compounds in this new library for their ability to influence anti-tumor immunity by activating CD8+ T cells‚ a group of immune cells critical for killing cancerous or virally infected cells. After the scientists evaluated the top six candidates in both human and mouse cells‚ they saw that TVA performed the best. TVA is the most abundant trans fatty acid present in human milk‚ but the body cannot produce it on its own. Only about 20% of TVA is broken down into other byproducts‚ leaving 80% circulating in the blood. “That means there must be something else it does‚ so we started working on it more‚” Chen said. The researchers then conducted a series of experiments with cells and mouse models of diverse tumor types. Feeding mice a diet enriched with TVA significantly reduced the tumor growth potential of melanoma and colon cancer cells compared to mice fed a control diet. The TVA diet also enhanced the ability of CD8+ T cells to infiltrate tumors. The team also performed a series of molecular and genetic analyses to understand how TVA was affecting the T cells. These included a new technique for monitoring transcription of single-stranded DNA called kethoxal-assisted single-stranded DNA sequencing‚ or KAS-seq‚ developed by Chuan He‚ PhD‚ the John T. Wilson Distinguished Service Professor of Chemistry at UChicago and another senior author of the study. These additional assays‚ done by both the Chen and He labs‚ showed that TVA inactivates a receptor on the cell surface called GPR43 which is usually activated by short-chain fatty acids often produced by gut microbiota. TVA overpowers these short-chain fatty acids and activates a cellular signaling process known as the CREB pathway‚ which is involved in a variety of functions including cellular growth‚ survival‚ and differentiation. The team also showed that mouse models where the GPR43 receptor was exclusively removed from CD8+ T cells also lacked their improved tumor fighting ability. Eating beef staves off cancer!! pic.twitter.com/QeeliWuiWX — Dr Shawn Baker (@SBakerMD) November 22‚ 2023 Daily Mail reports: Fatty cuts of beef and lamb are more likely to have higher levels of TVA compared to lean cuts‚ as are whole milk and full-fat dairy products compared to low-fat and skim. The anti-cancer power of the dairy-derived fatty acid comes from its ability to turbocharge certain immune cells known as T cells‚ which recognize foreign invaders and prompt the immune system to kill them. Researchers said that eating foods rich in this compound or giving it to cancer patients as a supplement could have measurable benefits in decreasing the size of tumors. Dr Jing Chen‚ senior author of the study‚ said: ‘By focusing on nutrients that can activate T cell responses‚ we found one that actually enhances anti-tumor immunity by activating an important immune pathway.’ Her team identified the nutrient after combing through a database of around 700 different metabolites – substances produced when the body breaks down food – all of which came from food. Read the abstract for the study‚ titled “Trans-vaccenic acid reprograms CD8+ T cells and anti-tumour immunity‚” at Nature: Diet-derived nutrients are inextricably linked to human physiology by providing energy and biosynthetic building blocks and by functioning as regulatory molecules. However‚ the mechanisms by which circulating nutrients in the human body influence specific physiological processes remain largely unknown. Here we use a blood nutrient compound library-based screening approach to demonstrate that dietary trans-vaccenic acid (TVA) directly promotes effector CD8+ T cell function and anti-tumour immunity in vivo. TVA is the predominant form of trans-fatty acids enriched in human milk‚ but the human body cannot produce TVA endogenously1. Circulating TVA in humans is mainly from ruminant-derived foods including beef‚ lamb and dairy products such as milk and butter2‚3‚ but only around 19% or 12% of dietary TVA is converted to rumenic acid by humans or mice‚ respectively4‚5. Mechanistically‚ TVA inactivates the cell-surface receptor GPR43‚ an immunomodulatory G protein-coupled receptor activated by its short-chain fatty acid ligands6‚7‚8. TVA thus antagonizes the short-chain fatty acid agonists of GPR43‚ leading to activation of the cAMP–PKA–CREB axis for enhanced CD8+ T cell function. These findings reveal that diet-derived TVA represents a mechanism for host-extrinsic reprogramming of CD8+ T cells as opposed to the intrahost gut microbiota-derived short-chain fatty acids. TVA thus has translational potential for the treatment of tumours.

Exposure To Previously Banned Insecticide Positively Associated To Erectile Dysfunction‚ Study Suggests

According to research published in the Journal of Endocrinological Investigation‚ exposure to organophosphate (OP) insecticides‚ such as chlorpyrifos‚ may contribute to erectile dysfunction (ED) in men. “Among environmental contaminants‚ organophosphate (OP) insecticides represent one of the largest chemical classes‚ and chlorpyrifos is the most commonly used OP in the U.S. OP exposure has been implicated in driving biological processes‚ including inflammation‚ reactive oxygen species production‚ and endocrine and metabolism disruption‚ which have been demonstrated to adversely affect the hypothalamus and testes and may contribute to ED. Currently‚ studies evaluating the association between OPs and ED within the U.S. general population are sparse‚” a study published in August 2023 read. “The results of our study suggest a potential role for chlorpyrifos and other OPs the pathogenesis of ED. Future studies are warranted to validate these findings‚ determine clinical significance‚ and to investigate potential mechanisms underlying these associations‚” the study’s conclusion stated. Exposure to the insecticide chlorpyrifos + other organophosphates is associated with the development of erectile dysfunction‚ according to a recent study. LEARN MORE https://t.co/cgq4a2e8oE — Children’s Health Defense (@ChildrensHD) November 24‚ 2023 According to Beyond Pesticides‚ ED is increasing among men on a global scale. Beyond Pesticides writes: Globally‚ ED is increasing‚ with over 300 million men expected to have ED by 2025. Although age and comorbid conditions (e.g.‚ obesity‚ diabetes‚ and hypertension) play a role in ED prognosis‚ studies‚ including this one‚ suggest environmental contaminant exposure can also explain the increasing trend in ED. The study notes‚ “Future studies are warranted to corroborate these findings‚ determine clinical significance‚ and to investigate biological mechanisms underlying these associations.” Using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES)‚ researchers investigated urinary levels of 3‚5‚6-trichloro-2-pyridinol (TCPy)‚ a metabolite of the most common OP insecticide chlorpyrifos. Researchers compared urinary levels to patients who experienced ED‚ responding to a questionnaire indicating if the individuals were “sometimes able” or “never able” to achieve an erection. A linear and logistic regression compared sociodemographic variables between chlorpyrifos exposure to identify risk factors for exposure and ED and analyze the relationship between TCPy and ED. Of the 671 male patients in the study‚ about 37 percent have ED‚ with smoking‚ diabetes‚ aging‚ identifying as Mexican–American‚ and physical inactivity having the highest association with ED prevalence. However‚ the study highlights the increased odds of ED among individuals exposed to chlorpyrifos‚ with the risk of ED rising with increased exposure to the chemical. The presence of pesticides in the body has implications for human health‚ especially during vulnerable life stages‚ such as childhood‚ puberty‚ pregnancy‚ and old age. For instance‚ prepubescent exposure to pesticides can impair male reproduction through the interruption of testicular homeostasis and the development of reproductive Leydig cells and can have multigenerational effects. Furthermore‚ pesticide pollutants in groundwater‚ soils‚ household products‚ and chemical manufacturing by-products are on a growing list of culprits causing developmental abnormalities such as impaired sperm quality and impotence. Reproductive health can be compromised if males are exposed at various times in life‚ spanning from in utero up to adulthood. Erectile dysfunction is reported in one-third of the U.S. male population and has links to chemicals in the environment. Vinclozolin‚ a fungicide commonly used in agriculture‚ can contaminate food and water supplies‚ and laboratory tests found that some male offspring of animals exposed to vinclozolin during pregnancy displayed a complete lack of interest in females. The research cited in the Journal of Endocrinological Investigation is reportedly one of the first studies to analyze the relationship between specific OPs and ED. This study primarily focused on chlorpyrifos exposure. “Despite the findings of this study and many other related to health effects from chlorpyrifos exposure‚ the 8th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals vacated the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) 2021 decision to cancel all food tolerances for chlorpyrifos‚” Beyond Pesticides noted. This week‚ the 8th Circuit vacated the EPA's rule that effectively banned the use of chlorpyrifos on foods we eat. Generations have been unnecessarily exposed to this toxic pesticide for decades. EPA protected our health in 2021‚ but industry doesn't care. https://t.co/FgUz5s5Uix — Earthjustice (@Earthjustice) November 5‚ 2023 The pesticide industry‚ chemical farmers‚ and their government allies can go back to poisoning all of us with #chlorpyrifos (a neurotoxin) in 2024. Accordingly‚ EPA is revoking all tolerances for chlorpyrifos‚” it added. The tolerances for all commodities expired on February 28‚ 2022. Over 1.3 Million Chickens Will Be Killed at an Ohio Egg Farm

What is going on with America’s food supply? An egg farm in Ohio announced that it is about to kill 1.3 million chickens. Why? Because avian flu was detected. Keep in mind that not all 1.3 million chickens have the flu. It was just detected. But out of an abundance of precaution‚ 1.3 million chickens will be slaughtered. This is set to disrupt the food supply and could potentially trigger higher egg prices in the coming weeks and months. More than 1.3 million chickens are being slaughtered on an Ohio egg farm as the bird flu continues to take a toll on the industry. https://t.co/NowvUGo3BW — ABC News (@ABC) November 25‚ 2023 1.3 million chickens to be culled after bird flu detected at Ohio farm https://t.co/yuxWPe2BUm — USA TODAY (@USATODAY) November 25‚ 2023 Bird flu leads to killing of 1.35 million chickens on Ohio egg farm https://t.co/DEoTtCEhd4 — The Boston Globe (@BostonGlobe) November 25‚ 2023 This news comes after a year of farms being set on fire across the nation. It appears that all of the fires were unrelated. But it still had an impact on food prices. ABC News confirms: More than 1.3 million chickens are being slaughtered on an Ohio egg farm as the bird flu continues to take a toll on the industry. The U.S. Department of Agriculture said all 1.35 million chickens on the farm in Ohio’s Union County will be slaughtered to help limit the spread of the highly contagious virus after a case was confirmed in the flock this week. The outbreak that began in early 2022 has been much less severe this year as fewer cases of the virus are being found among the wild birds that spread it. But there have still been 8.1 million birds killed this year to help control the spread of the disease and 5.8 million of those have come just this month as several large egg farms have been struck. That includes 1.2 million birds at one Iowa egg farm and another 940‚000 chickens at one Minnesota egg farm that had to be killed. Did you catch that? “A case was confirmed.” This suggests that it was only one. We understand the need for caution. But how was avian flu able to get into the farm? Why don’t we have better measures to prevent and detect this? And why is the only solution to kill so many innocent lives? This is a piece of emergency management that doesn’t get talked about enough. 1.3 million chickens to be killed at Union County Ohio farm after #birdflu detected. https://t.co/RZGBu9unrI — Thad Hicks‚ CEM (@olehicks) November 25‚ 2023 Bird flu still taking toll on industry as 1.35 million chickens are being killed on an Ohio egg farm https://t.co/ehKlEWwuLj — WPMT FOX43 (@fox43) November 24‚ 2023 The U.S. Department of Agriculture says 1.35 million chickens are being slaughtered on an Ohio egg farm as the bird flu continues to take a toll on the industry. Consumers are paying more than ever before. Many Americans have to work multiple jobs in order to make ends meet. Nerd Wallet suggests that egg prices are likely to rise again: Eggs became so expensive because of a widespread outbreak of H5N1‚ a highly transmissible and fatal strain of avian influenza‚ or bird flu. This outbreak started in early 2022 and grew into the largest bird flu outbreak in U.S. history. So the outbreak lowered egg supply‚ while demand remained consistent. That’ll naturally raise prices. In recent months‚ the number of cases has largely been declining‚ helping to ease egg prices. Still‚ poultry experts are holding their breath amid the current fall migration season (during which wild birds can spark another outbreak among poultry)‚ hoping there isn’t a spike in cases. Even though COVID is over‚ we’re still not back to pre-pandemic prices. Eggs are more expensive. Dairy is more expensive. Everything is more expensive. And the slaughter of 1.3 million chickens will only make things worse.

Joe Biden: “I Cannot Prove This‚ But” Hamas Attacked Israel Because I Was Going to Bring Peace to the Middle East

Joe Biden just claimed that Hamas attacked Israel because he was about to bring peace to the Middle East. Really? Does he think we’re that stupid? During President Trump’s term‚ he wiped out ISIS. And after that‚ there was peace in the Middle East. You didn’t hear about war. You didn’t hear about attacks. In fact‚ it was peaceful until Joe Biden’s terrible withdrawal from Afghanistan. And yet‚ he has the audacity to try to brag on himself over the dead bodies of 1‚300 Israelis? Despicable! Biden: “I cannot prove what I’m about to say‚” but Hamas attacked Israel because I was very close to bringing peace to the region. pic.twitter.com/m8IfJvlivL — Tom Elliott (@tomselliott) November 24‚ 2023 President Joe Biden is said to have brokered the deal for the hostages with Israel and Hamas and somehow no Americans were included. This man is senile. pic.twitter.com/diKbTNw8jQ — Carmine Sabia (@CarmineSabia) November 24‚ 2023 Biden: "I cannot prove what I'm about to say. But I believe one of the reasons why Hamas struck when they did‚ was they knew that I was working very closely with the Saudis … to bring peace to the region by having recognition of Israel and Israel's right to exist." pic.twitter.com/5UDvLLk949 — The Post Millennial (@TPostMillennial) November 24‚ 2023 Folks‚ just think for yourselves. Forget about what Joe Biden said. Do you think the world is safer and more peaceful today than it was under President Trump? I think most people would say no! The Daily Wire confirms Biden’s delusional remarks: President Joe Biden claimed during a press conference on Friday that the reason Hamas terrorists murdered 1‚200 Israelis on October 7 was because he was getting ready to bring peace to the Middle East. The claim by Biden comes as chaos and war have broken out in many parts of the world under his administration as those who would seek to harm the West sense weakness from the administration. A reporter asked Biden what cooperation he was hoping to get from Arab leaders and what he was hearing from them when he talked to them. “I’m hearing a lot‚ but I’m not going to speak to it right now‚” Biden said. “There’s an overwhelming desire on the part of the region to — let me back up. I cannot prove what I’m about to say‚ but I believe one of the reasons why Hamas struck when they did was they knew that I was working very closely with the Saudis and others in the region to bring peace to the region by having recognition of Israel and Israel’s right to exist.” “You may recall when we did the G-20 a little while ago‚ I was able to get a resolution — a statement passed through there saying we’re going to build a railroad from Riyadh all the way through the Middle East into Saudi Arabia‚ Israel‚ et cetera‚ and all the way up to Europe‚ not the railroad‚ but it would be an underground pipeline and then railroad‚” he continued. “The whole idea is there’s overwhelming interest and I think most Arab nations know in coordinating with one another to change the dynamic in their region for a longer term peace. And that is what I’m going to continue to work on.” Biden’s regime has brought destabilization to the world. Think about what’s happening with Ukraine and Russia. China and Tawain. And now Hamas and Israel. Under President Trump‚ we had world peace! We are less safe because of Joe Biden. He pressured Israel to release prisoners convicted of brutal crimes in exchange for innocent hostages. What do you think the Hamas leaders learn from this exchange? — Richard Grenell (@RichardGrenell) November 24‚ 2023 Joe Biden is now claiming that the reason Hamas brutally attacked Israel is because he was close to ushering in peace in the Middle East. We can’t blame them. But this is how media bias works. And this is why so many people are ill-informed when it comes to politics and current events. Fortunately‚ The Hill confirms: President Biden said he believes Hamas’s Oct. 7 attack on Israel was inspired by progressing diplomacy in the region‚ especially with Saudi Arabia‚ spurred on by his administration. In a press conference Friday falling on the beginning of a four-day truce in the conflict to release 50 hostages held by Hamas‚ Biden remarked on one of his theories for why Hamas began the conflict. “I cannot prove what I’m about to say‚” Biden said. “But I believe one of the reasons why Hamas struck when they did was they knew that I was working very closely with the Saudis and others in the region to bring peace to the region by having recognition of Israel and Israel’s right to exist.” To make matters worse‚ not a single American was released by Hamas. How’s that for presidential leadership? If President Trump were in charge‚ I guarantee all of the Americans would have been released. Heck‚ if his track record is any indication‚ this probably wouldn’t have happened at all.
